The Braves announced that they have claimed right-hander Jesse Chavez off waivers from the Angels.
Chavez, 39, is no stranger to switching jerseys, having played for the Pirates, Braves, Royals, Blue Jays, Athletics, Dodgers, Angels, Rangers and Cubs in his career, having returned to many of those clubs for a second or even third stint. 2022 has been no exception, as the veteran hurler began the season with the Cubs, but has since been traded twice, going to the Braves and then the Angels. He was released by the Halos yesterday and now returns to Atlanta for the second time this season.
Between those three clubs, he’s thrown 54 2/3 innings with a 3.62 ERA, 25.6% strikeout rate, 6.8% walk rate and 37.2% ground ball rate. His best stretch of the year was definitely with Atlanta, though, as he has a 2.11 ERA as a Brave while registering marks of 6.35 with the Cubs and 7.59 with the Angels.
The club already had a vacancy on their 40-man roster, meaning a corresponding move won’t be necessary. Placing him on the activer roster should be smooth as well, since rosters expand from 26 to 28 on September 1. Players claimed off waivers generally have three days to report to their new club, meaning Chavez can just join the club on Thursday and take one of the fresh spots.
YaySports
Least surprising thing in Sports today. How long until he’s putting up All Star numbers in Atlanta again?
syndergaardshair
Braves are a cheating organization
YaySports
I can see how lesser organizations would believe that
drasco036
The Braves literally got in trouble cheating a few years ago for the shady amateur spending habits both on the international scale and their draftees
geauxbraves
Yes they did. However, that regime is gone now and the punishment has been served
bhambrave
And that leadership was fired and banned for life. Saying that a previous GM cheated and calling the Braves a cheating organization don’t quite equate.
YaySports
Oh the horror.. Atlanta overpaid their players years ago and lost every single one of them for it. How sad it must be for other teams to know the Braves lost roughly 5 years of international prospects out of that and are still out developing their competition.
ATLBraves21
Yeah that is the crazy thing MLB throws the book at the Braves for over paying international players but its a slap on the wrist at best for Houston cheating in games. Also if you go in look at most of those players the Braves over paid none are doing that great with the minor league teams they signed with so really wasn’t a sure thing they would become pros.
drasco036
And yet people still witch moan and complain about the Astros.
The Braves also didn’t loose every one of their players and who knows how many years that it went on.
Halo11Fan
There are cheaters, and there are teams that bring in cheaters.
If you don’t bring in cheaters, and you get rid of the cheaters, you’re ok in my book.
Imagine how much fun watching Judge would be right now without the cheating of McGwire, Bonds and Sosa. They “jerks” stole from everyone.
bhambrave
Coppolella was only there from 2015 to 2017, and he was fully busted. The Braves lost 13 prospects, and were essentially banned from international signings for several years. The Astros got away with a slap on the wrist, and no players were punished.
Braveslifer
@drasco …which is why Coppy is banned and the Braves hired AA.
Some people wish to point out past regimes as if they still exist.
Find something positive in life to focus on
dadofdonnydownvote
@atl. I was worried about Kevin Maitan the most but he appears to be a bust.
bhambrave
@Halo11Fan: Agree totally. Also, I wonder if Altuve gets the MVP over Judge if you take away all of the extra Runs and RBI he got because of his cheating teammates. That’s even assuming he didn’t cheat as well.
.
They definitely tainted the #’s, but the real fans know that Maris is still the single season HR champ. And *61* is still the # to break. Not concerned about the people who think he needs to hit 74 to break the record.
sjoranje111
Did they though? We were all immensely entertained. We only got made several years later.
sjoranje111
He would get that ring regardless of his place on the current roster…
Johnny Bravo
Kevin Maitan Is in the Angels AA farm system looks like he’s got his swing he’s starting to hit with power too
Also Soto heading for an average
ChuckyNJ
Those “real fans” populate tabloids and talk radio. No slugger will get attention beyond NYC until he can get close to Barry “US” Bonds’ record.
.
Stop defending juicers Chucky. Us “real fans” don’t give a flying hoot what the backers of cheaters like you think. NJ eh? You seem more of SF kinda guy 😉
Halo11Fan
I can’t get my kid interested in the Home Race. There is no hype for 62.
Stanton came close a few years ago, and didn’t even play the final day or two of the season. No one cares about 61.
Halo11Fan
sj. I wasn’t entertained.
When Brady Anderson can hit 50HRs, you knew the game wasn’t right.
.
If he does hit 62, it will be a monumental occasion celebrated and lauded by all relevant fans. And without an **asterisk***
bloodreddawgs
Don’t gaslight us
bloodreddawgs
You know who deserves an asterisk? Cal Ripken Jr. that guy willingly went on strike w/ the rest of the players’ union and sat out an entire season. His all time consecutive games played streak is a hoax. Lou Gehrig is still the king!
.
Haha I would NEVER even attempt to gaslight anyone….On the same page with the strikers…We could add Glavine as well because he was the true player shot caller. Still pissed at the NHL players for their lockout in fact. As for the Iron Man, he might be the best player ever so you’ll never hear me say anything remotely negative about him. Glad you are a fan of the old timers though. Gotta keep their memory and legend going.
.
If you know they cheated and “stole” from us why can’t you get into the chase for 62?? I know we aren’t talkin double-speak here..
.
This is why we gotta pull hard for the guys that are doing it right. Fans shouldnt be punished merely for not knowing what was going on behind the scenes. Not every fan knew. Some people like to believe the best in others until proven otherwise. Personally, I was too young/naive to understand it or see it back then. That’s why when I see scrawny little fellas like Mookie and Trey T. crush 400+ foot bombs I am perpetually impressed.
PaulR28
*Lose

Translation?
PaulR28
Entire season?
Paint chips. They’re not snacks, buddy.
.
I don’t think I am the one sniffing anything here. Why appear out of thin air with a negative/weirdo comment ya weirdo?
PaulR28
Someone above is yapping about Cal Ripken striking for an entire season. I think the threading is methed up.
Smacky
And when Eric Gagne started looking like He-Man. Look at see and see how he now compares to Kenley Jansen (who’s huge) –
dodgerblue.com/dodgers-news-eric-gagne-kenley-jans…
Gagne used to be Jansen’s size!
NashvilleJeff
Why is the troll Smacky still allowed to post on the site? All he does his vent his hatred for Americans who live in the southern portion of the country. What does his unrelenting bigotry have to do w/the discussion of baseball? Why do you capitalize “South” Smacky? Are you still fighting the Civil War?
Smacky
In general, lowercase north, south, northeast, northern, etc., when they indicate compass direction. Capitalize these words when they designate formal regions as defined by U.S. Census Bureau (Northeast, South, Midwest, West).
NashvilleJeff
Did you notice that the ugly troll rant you posted is gone now? That answer you just posted about capitalizing directions had nothing to do w/the racist attack you posted that I flagged. That’s a weak attempt at sidestepping what you said. Not going to let you get away w/your bigotry on here any more Smacky. Keep posting that garbage and risk getting banned. Try talking baseball w/civility for a change.
Smacky
I’ve no idea how you find anything on this site from anyone personally offensive. And as far as the race thing I have no idea what you’re upset about. I guess you could be saying I’m being racist to white people some how? OK… And fwiw, I’m very, very white – 23 & Me says I’m 99.8% Northern European.
Obviously something I said really ticked you off
Smacky
Just mute me. I won’t take it even the slightest bit personally. You’re the only person here that’s ever said they have a problem with what I’ve posted on here ever.
Smacky
And if you’re upset I said Kevin Maitan got fat because he ate a bunch of Southern fast food. You’re beef isn’t with me. There are receipts.
bravesjournal.us/2018/07/26/kevin-maitan-is-not-do…
NashvilleJeff
If you’re so innocent, then why did your bigoted comment get removed after it was flagged? That wasn’t the first time you’ve made those kinds of prejudicial remarks. You know d…n well it had nothing to do w/Maitan, so drop the “I’m being persecuted unfairly” act. Not going to mute you, but I will flag those comments that you’ll probably keep making.
NashvilleJeff
Btw, you should consider saying YOUR instead of you’re in that “you’re beef” comment. I’m not a cow. Even “ignorant Southerners” like me understand how to use contractions.
mj-2
We all pretending Scherzer hasn’t been cheating for years somehow to stay good?
Just because he hasn’t been caught doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
User 899214610
Dude ain’t even trying to hide his cheatin eye. it’s so obvious it’s a fake eye that helps him command his pitches
Tick Tock Clock
It should be illegal for a team to claim a player they just traded away.
sjoranje111
Why? With waiver priorities there were plenty of other teams that could have taken him. No one told the Angels to release him anyway.
Smacky
I’m sure the Players Union wouldn’t mind that rule at all.
NashvilleJeff
Braves have the 4th best record in baseball. 26 other teams had a chance to make a waiver claim on Chavez. Claims of this type happen frequently. Don’t hear anyone crying because the Jays just claimed Bradley Zimmer for the second time this season.
bhambrave
Syndergaardshair got four upvotes. I’m guessing Astros and Mets fans.
Appalachian_Outlaw
@bham- I’m guessing he up voted himself once.
bhambrave
At least once. Maybe more.
BravesNomad
So Lunch you’re still under that impression despite evidence to the contrary since Coppola was banned. Jealous much.
nmendoza7
Okay so basically they won the trade and the Angels absolutely accomplished nothing other than Davidson
dirkg
Google “Salary Dump”. The Angels would have traded for a 4 week old Snickers bar to get out of that Iglesias contract. Jesse was an obvious release and Davidson is icing on the cake. With Perry’s ATL ties, my guess this was all part of the plan.
ATLBraves21
Correct Angels got out of a long term deal with a closer that was clearly not going to pay off for them seeing they never compete. They did get Davidson who was ranked pretty high in Braves farms system and maybe a starter or guy out of pen one day. In 4 starts for Angels he is 1-2 with 5.21 era with 19 innings not great but for his career over 3 season has only 12 total starts.
CaptainJudge99
Chavez always pitches well with the Braves, a solid pick up for them. Nice move.
Dunedin020306
I tip my hat to those of you who accurately predicted this event after Chavez was released by the Angels earlier this week.
mlb1225
Career 3.40 ERA, 3.11 FIP, and 1.22 WHIP with the Braves. Third go around with ATL, but he’s done good for them.
41em
This will be Chavez’ fourth stint with the Braves. It’s time for the Braves to sign him to a “long-term” extension.
disadvantage
Nah, they’ll just continue to pluck him from the teams that do sign him.
braves2
he’s 39
bhambrave
Glad to see him return. They needed the space on the roster, but with September expansion there’s room again.
HalosHeavenJJ
Good for him. Gets to go back to a team he enjoys and gets another shot at a ring.
braves95 2
Dude just gets outs while wearing Braves jersey LMAO
bravesfan
Think we all saw this happening
getrealgone2
Woo Hoo!
Manfred’s playing with the balls
Imagine how happy players must be to leave the Angels. Going from a loser to a winner and back to the team he started the year with. Win-win trade, braves win and Chavez wins. Sorry Angel fans
logo69
Had a nice month long vacation in Southern California, but is now back for a chance to repeat. What a year for Mr. Chavez
Bright Side
Braves pen has been shaky lately. It got exposed by the Cardinals. In game two of the series, Kenley Jansen’s FB wasn’t generating swings and misses and he couldn’t find the plate with his offspeed stuff. I don’t care what his numbers are this year, whenever I see that kind of meltdown by a RP, red lights start flashing. Braves need more production from Acuna. Olsen is a fine player, but he’s still a downgrade from Freeman.
bloodreddawgs
1-game sample lol. Maybe he was hungover or dehydrated? Or maybe his back hurt. To disregard an entire season’s worth of performance because of one bad outing is hilarious process lol
bravesnation nc
I knew it. Come on back Jesse! Go Bravos
bravesnation nc
Remember folks who the Angels GM is and where he came from… PeachTree baby!
kellin
Arte Moreno?
Rsox
Congratulations to Jesse Chavez as he joins Rickey Henderson (Oakland) and Tony Fernandez (Toronto) as the only players to have 4 separate stints with the same team
kellin
And on another note, the Angels have Mayers starting tonight. Ugh. Sounds like a bullpen game coming right up…
Drew Waters Bat
So is he eligible for the post-season for the Braves? He played on their roster before the trade deadline. How does this work?
YaySports
As long as he’s in the organization prior to Sep 1 he’s eligible for the playoffs
bhambrave
If he’s in the org on 9/1, he’s eligible.
DS1
Jesse is a pro. He give the Braves whatever they ask of him.
DustinTNTwins
“Clark, he’s the gift that keeps on giving the whole year!”
“That he is, Edward!”

haha, YES!
