The Angels selected the contract of right-hander Mike Mayers, the team announced today. To make room for Mayers on their 40-man roster, the club transferred right-hander Michael Lorenzen to the 60-day IL. A spot on the active roster had been cleared last night, when the team optioned righty Janson Junk to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Though he’s had some success in an Angels uniform, 2022 has been a struggle for Mayers. The 30-year-old logged a 5.40 ERA (5.81 FIP) in 16 2/3 innings before accepting an assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake after he went unclaimed following a late-May designation. Things didn’t go much better for him in the minors, though he was stretched out as a starter. The righty notched a 6.27 ERA in 33 innings across 8 Triple-A appearances (all starts).
While he’ll be given another chance to establish himself in the majors, Mayers remains a strong non-tender candidate in the offseason, as he’d be in line for a raise from this year’s $2.15MM salary. Regardless, he should get an opportunity to latch on somewhere, as he’s pitched quite effectively in the fairly recent past, including a combined 105 innings of 3.34 ERA ball between 2020 and 2021. Across parts of seven seasons between the Cardinals and Angels, Mayers has struck out 24.5% and walked 8.4% of the batters he’s faced (both a tick better than league average) and owns a 4.98 ERA (4.30 FIP) in 202 1/3 innings.

Just a year ago this guy was suppose to be the Angels late inning RP specialist.
I still can’t believe anyone in the organization thought that was a good idea. This year it was not having a shortstop,
Well run organizations don’t make these obvious mistakes.

The owner seems to make decisions based on his gut or (old example) being loyal to Scioscia instead of embracing data analysis just a little bit.
In the non-data world with maybe more gut instincts and mythicism, the Arte’s Not LA Angels will suffer 1-2 decades of mediocrity due to his poor decision of getting rid of DiPoto.
This comment is at least 50 % facetious.

For Mayers…Based on 2020 results that was a reasonable expectation for 2021.
Btw the widely praised signings of guys that replaced Mayers (Loup/Tepera) as late inning specialists in 2022 have numbers similar or worse than Mayers in 2021.
Does this mean Loup and Tepera signings were obvious mistakes too??
TheOpener
Team is going nowhere especially without trading Ohtani and now they brought in Michael Myers from Haddonfield.

Except that Mike Mayers is a cheap knockoff, Jamie would take him out in the first scene.

I had this thought the other day about how bad the angels have been at developing/aquiring talent. I can’t think of a single player that fits the description of someone having good value other than Trout and Ohtani. They either are attached to a horrible contract (upton, pujols, Hamilton, rendon). Or they are not good enough to bring anything in return. They’ve never developed anyone it seems. I can name 3-5 players on almost every team since trout entered in 2011 that have had more value than any player on the angels other than trout and Ohtani.
Orioles -machado, Britton, Mullins, hoping Adley
Yankees – judge,
Red Sox – betts, Xander, devers
Rays – glasnow, wander, snell
Jays – Bautista, vladito, bo
Cle- lindor, Ramirez, Bieber
Chi Sox – Kopech, Robert, abreu
KC – hosmer, mous, looking like Witt
Twins – buxton, berrios
Tigers – (were competing during the 2011 era)
Rangers – ^
Angels -^^
Mariners – Rodriguez, Diaz, seager
Astros- Correa, Breg, spring, altuve
A’s – Olson, Chapman, Donaldson
Nats – soto, Harper, Turner, stras
Mets – Alonso,
Phillies – Nola ^^^
Braves – acuna, Riley, albies
Marlins – alcantara, Stanton, realmuto
Pirates – little too soon to count Cruz and Hayes
Brewers – burnes
Cubs – Bryant, Rizzo, arrieta
Reds – Castillo
Cards – ^^^^ but always have talented valuable players
Dodgers – belly, Urias, walker
D backs – goldy, marte, gallen
Giants – ^^^^^
Rockies – story, Nolan, chuck
Padres – tatis
The teams I couldn’t think of any players developed since 2011 were winning during that time. I’m sure this is easy to knit pick and talk about players I missed/ shouldn’t count, but at the end of the day almost every team except the angels has created. I could do another list of good signings. The angels would have a short list of that too. Very frustrating. Maybe CJ Wilson counts as a valuable player they had. That was the first to come to mind.
I would love a real deep dive on the contracts they’ve given out, players they’ve received from trades, players free agent contracts coming off of leaving the angels (ie Corey seager got a mega deal leaving the Dodgers, you don’t see any angels players hitting free agency getting a monster deal)
Yes I have no life.

I’d help you with this, what exactly is the goal of the research you wanna do?
Halo11Fan
I liked and appreciated the research. Few posters actually put effort in their posts. It’s a welcome change.
2012orioles
How many Angels players (compare to other teams) have acquired a top 100 prospect, or were “sought after” in free agency or the deadline. I feel like all of the players I listed above were hot commodities at the deadline and/or received (or will receive) a hefty contract once they hit free agency, or on another list which I did not make, were not traded because they were in good contracts with their team (ie scherzer on the nationals) I can’t think of any angels other than maybe cj Wilson and maybe Ian kinsler. All since trout entered they league
2012orioles
I guess long story short is most of the angels developed players never turn out and most of their acquisitions have no value. How true is that
tstats
So define value? Pujols technically had a positive WAR as an Angel but not as much as his contract should have commanded. This is an entire research paper I did for school last year. I wish I could find a way to link the paper. In the end I stipulate and devise a formula (based on another paper just edited slightly) that proves players over 32 are overpaid and thusly overused.
2012orioles
Idk numerically how to, but basically any angels developed player – are they being targeted by other teams either via free agency or trade. Or any players signed by the angels, are they living up to their contract. Seems like the answer is zero to both. Idk how you’d analytically want to break it down, but that would be my question
frank858
That’s because the Angels from 2011-2017 traded all of their prospects for older players like Pujols, Upton, Hamilton, Greinke,, Teixera. Although when Teixera left for the Yankees the year after the Angels compensation was Mike Trout amoung others. Since 2018, David Fletcher, Jared Walsh, Luis Rengifo,, Taylor Ward, Jo Adell, Reid Detmers, Taylor Ward, Brandon Marsh, Jose Suarez, Jaime Barria, Max Stassi and the signing of Shohei Ohtani.. a lot of home grown talent in the past four years but not enough consistency from the Leaders in the same season due to Season ending injuries.
pohle
walsh, ward detmers and suarez are probably the angels biggest home grown recent success stories

LMAO! Even a lowly Orioles troll?

I’m not trolling I want the angels to succeed. But it baffles me they can’t get anyone other than trout and Ohtani. Two absolute studs and best players in the game
User 2079935927
All of your trade scenarios under value Ohtani and Trout.

SIMMONS? Multiple seasons of WAR +3-4 Acquired from ATL
FLETCHER? He had a +4 WAR year, solid defender, contact high OB%
WALSH? AllStar 1B 2021, WAR +3-4 I believe

Who did the Angels trade for Pujols and Upton.?
They drafted talent who have shown flashes of effectiveness but they can’t produce solid, consistency good players.
Why?

Drive and Desire Imo

@halo
Wasn’t Kinsler the top name sent in the Upton deal? probably another player too. Can’t remember all of them.
Pujols was FA so just cost a draft pick, same for Hamilton signing.
Greinke cost us Segura, that was a terrible trade.

CORBIN to DBacks for Harden.
SKAGGS (RIP) was somewhat successful, then deceased.
G. RICHARDS somewhat successful then often injured. Ankle/knee then arm issues.

So if someone can’t pitch in the Majors out of the pen, then still sucks in the Minors, why waste the time ‘stretching him out’ as a starter and calling him up? What a huge waste of time and resources. I love my Angels, but the Moreno needs to sell the team, and we need a whole new top down house cleaning. smh

Halo 11 has more than one account…..what a weasel!
Troutahni
I feel strongly that Rengifo fits the bill when it comes to developing an established player.it looks like Detmers has arrived. The problem with the Angels besides the Owner is the Angel Coaching staff. I keep seeing Angel retreads popping up on other teams and they become decent ball players.
Nobody brings up the Greinke trade with the Brewers. The Angels traded Jean Segura for two months of Greinke and we than couldn’t resign him.
The Diamondbacks paid too much for Greinke during free agency. At the time I thought that trading away Segura was a big mistake.
Halo11Fan
Rengifo is one of 5he worst defenders in baseball. He’s virtually unplayable.
