The Angels announced a series of roster moves today, with lefty Aaron Loup, righty Ryan Tepera and outfielder Taylor Ward all being reinstated from the restricted list. All three were ineligible to cross the border into Canada for the team’s series against the Blue Jays. Infielder Matt Duffy was also reinstated from the injured list. Outfielder Ryan Aguilar and right-hander Gerardo Reyes, who were called up as COVID substitutes, were returned to the minors. Infielder Jose Rojas was optioned to Triple-A, while right-hander Jesse Chavez was released. Right-hander Jose Marte, recalled for the Toronto series, is sticking with the team.
Chavez, 39, is a veteran who made his debut back in 2008. In his career, he’s pitched at the big league level for the Pirates, Braves, Royals, Blue Jays, Athletics, Dodgers, Angels, Rangers and Cubs. This year started with the Cubs, though Chavez was flipped to Atlanta for Sean Newcomb just a couple of weeks into the season while sporting a 6.35 ERA. He pitched well over 38 1/3 innings in Atlanta, registering a 2.11 ERA in that time before getting sent to the Angels as part of the Raisel Iglesias deal. Since becoming an Angel, he has a 7.59 ERA in 10 2/3 innings.
Putting those three stints together, he has a 3.62 ERA for the season with a 25.6% strikeout rate, 6.8% walk rate and 37.2% ground ball rate. Chavez will now head back out to the open market in search of his next opportunity. If he signs with someone prior to 11:59pm ET on Aug. 31, he will be eligible for that club’s postseason roster.

Braves should pick him back up
FredMcGriff for the HOF
After the bullpen blowing the last couple of games I would welcome Chavez back to the Braves. Honestly I think Snitker needs to put Jensen in the 8th inning and give Iglesias the 9th inning. Snitker kept Minter in too long last night as well when he obviously didn’t have his best stuff.
NashvilleJeff
Three days in a row for Minter. Snit wasted him pitching w/a 7-1 lead Friday night.
GabrielJames
Snitker has always been terrible about making in game calls. Super talented team that covers up his deficiencies most of the time. There’s also no reason for Heredia to ever have a plate appearance, let alone start an entire game in a series against a division winner in the midst of a pennant race.

Couldn’t be traded after the deadline.
Halo11Fan
Of course he can be traded after the deadline, all he has to do is go through waivers, which I doubt would have been a problem. No one wanted him.
The bigger question is why did the Angels trade for him?
agentx
Nope, waiver trades no longer possible after the July/August trade deadline with any player who has spent even a moment before then on a major-league roster.
California Halo's
He was just a throw in by the Braves to clear a roster spot and pay roll to help off set Iglesias contract.
Halo11Fan
Thank you for the correction.
Under the new rules adopted this (2019) season, no player that has been on a Major League contract at any point in 2019 may be traded until after the World Series, meaning only players on Minor League deals who have not been promoted to the big leagues this year can be dealt.
———
I imagine they still could have put him on waivers.
Or has that changed as well?
chipper1965
I hope so. He’s thrives with the Braves
Zerbs63
He doesn’t have to be traded he was released he is a free agent. Just has to be on a roster by September to be allowed to play during postseason
nmendoza7
Back to Atlanta or Chicago
Steve Rogers
Not Chicago Cubs for they are auditioning minor league pitching prospects.
getrealgone2
C’mon on back to ATL, JC!
DS1
Does he go through waivers now?
FredMcGriff for the HOF
He was released. Free agent now. Can sign with any team.
chipper1965
No he’s a free agent
Halo11Fan
The Angels had to have put him on waivers last week.
That would have allowed the Angels to trade him or would have allowed the Angels to have saved 100,000 dollars when another team claimed him.
Lloyd Emerson
You can no longer trade people who have spent any service time on a Major League roster after the trade deadline.
Bauer? But I Hardly Know Her!
Why couldn’t the Angels have had the common decency to trade Chavez somewhere?
cookmeister 2
Because he was acquired literally at the deadline? The deal came out like 20 min after the deadline ended. Wasn’t any time to flip, plus he was probably released because he’s been terrible
i like al conin
He was probably released bc he wasn’t in the Angels 2023 plans and they are giving him an opportunity to join a contender. Now his recent performance is another issue as to whether that will happen.
stymeedone
Hope someone judges you after 10 innings.
cookmeister 2
Sorry Mrs. Chavez
But when you’re a month from free agency, older, given up almost a run an inning, and the team is out of contention, that’s what happens.
They could have waited a few days into September and really screwed him so I think this is a favor
socalbball
Stymeedone, Jesse Chavez was also terrible for the Angels in 138 innings in 2017. Putting on an Angels uniform seems to bring out the worst in Chavez.
Smacky
He got ump job’s by Laz Diaz

What an utterly horrendous call by an MLB umpire, that is straight down the pipe and he’s called it a ball, right in the centre of the plate. You have to ask how can he miss that?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
vaderzim
In all seriousness, he should go back to Atlanta, he does well with them.
NineChampionships
Maybe they should’ve picked up A-ball lotto ticket in that Iglesias trade instead Chávez. I know that trade a salary dump but at least you’d have a player coming back that could be decent 3yrs down the line.
Dan Rogers
They got tucker Davidson who would be like their third best starter right now
Halo11Fan
Tucker Davidson is the Angels third best starter? Is that what you meant?
If so, you’re crazy. The Angels are tied for the major league lead in shutouts. And Suarez, Ohtani, Detmers and Sandoval, They have all pitched very well over the last two months.
This year the Angels starting pitching is second in the AL in WAR. Their starting is not the problem.
Monkey’s Uncle
I feel like Jesse Chavez once gave up a homer to Reggie Jackson. Maybe even Shoeless Joe Jackson.
reayzrsharp@gmail.com 2
The way he pitched for us ,I think He could give up a home run to Janet Jackson
bravesnation nc
Braves Country reading my mind. This weekend was awful. Jansen for the past couple outings has struggled finding the zone. Minter appearance was a wash 2 bombs in one inning? Doesn’t happen need these guys saving bullets for the stretch. Say what you want but Jesse has gotten the club out of jams and he throws strikes.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Yep. It was awful Braves had a chance to close the gap to a 1 games Mets lead with 30 games left and didn’t capitalize. On the other hand Scherzer and deGrom have proven they can be be beat.
bravesfan
Go get’em Braves lol!
Angels & NL West
I’m guessing Duffy and Ford will platoon at 1B. Duffy will also fill in at 2B and 3B when Fletch and Rengifo need a rest or play elsewhere on the IF.
Jerry Cantrell
Serious question about Braves reliever Kenley Jansen and that windup of his – how is that not considered a balk, every single time he throws the ball? Isn’t the definition of a balk, the pitcher making a move(s) in an attempt to deceive the base runner?
Drew Waters Bat
Because it’s repetitive. He does it on every pitch. That’s his wind up not his move to throw. If he threw over in his hip movement then they would call a balk. You can move as much as you want as long as you do it on each pitch.
GareBear
I don’t even think it is necessarily the repeated portion. It just has to be a single non-stop windup. Cuetto has various deliveries with his “rocking chair” being the most infamous. He never “stopped” his motion though. But it is up to interpretation by umps on whether it was intended to be a deceptive more or a mix up to throw timing off.
dadofdonnydownvote
I have watched some Nestor Cortes highlights and they sure looked like balks to me. Honestly how can we expects umpires to get balks right when there are at least a handful that cannot even gets balls/strikes called right?
Benjamin101677
Nobody would want to try and change him as if your a runner you can start moving and steal a base. His movement is a major liability
.
Angels need to come up with a 3 or 4 year plan. No more pipe dreams and delusions of championship grandeur within a year or two. Set your sights at 3 years from now and don’t waver.

HalosHeavenJJ
The Iglesias trade was a salary dump by a guy trying to sell the team. Chavez just got caught up in its wake.
User 2079935927
Halo- He’s making 700G hardly going make a difference to prospective buyer lol
HalosHeavenJJ
Iglesias was due another $48 million. He was tte salary dump.
Chavez is just to guy who had to come here to make it happen.
Halo11Fan
It could have been a small salary dump by the braves, but 200 for the Braves, and if someone claimed Chavez that’s 100 dollars.
No one likes throwing away 100 thousand dollars.
Benjamin101677
Iglesias trade was also the Braves preparing for 2023 and 2024 with a closer
Benjamin101677
Jansen is still 85% save rate he is not that far off from his last couple years average.
I am a Braves fan but last night it wasn’t all the bullpens fault, Austin Riley made a big error in that inning. Had he got that runner out inning would been over with the back to back strike outs.
Cardinals are a play off team and play off teams can’t be given extra outs.
Researching the numbers I feel the Braves bullpen will be just fine. Saturday night some weak contact and control issues; Sunday some defense issues the bullpen couldn’t get past
Toms Changeup
The Braves bullpen will be fine! I’d rather any hiccups happen now instead of the playoffs, they can’t be perfect all year lol. I still wouldn’t mind them picking Chavez up he was solid for us.
Smacky
Heading back to Atlanta! Dude literally saved their season last year.

The Los Angeles Angels are a professional Major League Baseball team.

Must be something in the water in Atlanta…this guy is always great for them, awful for anyone else, lol. Come on back down, Jesse!
jaybest
he finally got a WS ring with the braves after a long career. he could retire now if he wants. He is 39. Unless the Braves pick him for another run on playoffs. Braves should go get him.
