Giancarlo Stanton is beginning a rehab assignment today, per Lindsey Adler of The Athletic (via Twitter). Before this latest injury, Stanton had been enjoying a run of sound health. For the season, Stanton has appeared in 80 games, slashing .228/.309/.498 with 24 home runs in 328 plate appearances. Stanton even started 38 games in the outfield grass, his most defensive action since 2018. Elsewhere around the Junior Circuit…
- Blue Jays southpaw Tim Mayza will begin a rehab assignment in Triple-A today, per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com (via Twitter). Mayza has been a key piece of Toronto’s bullpen for a number of years, no less so this season when he has pitched to a 2.88 ERA/3.94 FIP across 41 appearances totaling 34 1/3 innings. Mayza has been out of action since August 7th. The 30-year-old has held lefties to a .157/.218/.275 line this season.
- The Twins are cautiously optimistic that Kenta Maeda might be able to return late in the season to pitch out of the bullpen as he used to for the Dodgers. Maeda is throwing bullpens now, but President of Baseball Ops Derek Falvey was non-commital about Maeda’s ability to make a late-season appearance, per Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News (via Twitter). Maeda is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Boone is pretty close to being fired or what?
myaccount2
Doubt it. If you asked the Yankees in March how they would feel about being 73-47 and 8 games up on August 20th, I think they would take it.
Jaysfan1981
Everything is situational.
Yes your statement is technically correct, but if you put Conditions on it…. say would you be happy to be 73-47 but on a really bad losing streak after being on a historic pace vs 73-47 but have won 30 of 35 after hovering around 500. I’m sure they’d pick the latter.
This bad run could follow them through the playoffs.
myaccount2
I would take it considering nobody thought they would have *this* good of a record. Yes, I’d rather have the latter and be on a hot streak instead of a cold streak, but I’m sure they aren’t going to slump the entire rest of the season. The arms imploded for a bit, then as soon as they got it together, the bats went cold. I bet it’ll even out and they’ll still win the division.
dasit
it’s a baseball eternity until the playoffs. the yankees could blow the division, then get hot at the right time and still win it all. i think they get their bullpen and line-up sorted out by the playoffs. if so, it will come down to whether cole pitches like a true ace
BeforeMcCourt
Meh
It’s really, really hard to run a full season at a 115 win pace. Did i mention, really hard?
LAD had a similar swoon last year and “only” won 106 games. LA would have been fine if the pitching stayed healthy, but the significant injuries mounted. All that matters is October and being at full strength. That’s all the Yankees should be concerned about
Rick Pernell
How would they feel about being 3 games out and in 3rd place on 16 September?
BeforeMcCourt
So the Yankees are going to lose AT LEAST 11.5 games in the standings in a single month?
Biased much?
Rick Pernell
Boone is an idiot that is still waiting on the home run to bail him out. When you have a team batting average of .242, you are going to struggle. Without the home run, the Yankees struggle.
C Yards Jeff
Boone is safe. Looks like the glaring problem with Yankees is age of team. Ex #1 Stanton. Mets are old as well. Pretty sure league stats will prove this out.
As season progresses, younger teams that are in playoff hunt have an advantage here?
MuleorAstroMule
The Yankees lead the majors with 10.1% BB rate which makes them fourth in getting on base (.325 OBP). So they’re not just about the long ball.
Tiger_diesel92
Relies 52.4% on the HR which leads the majors so they do rely on it.
MuleorAstroMule
They lead the majors in home runs. Of course a lot of their runs will be scored that way. This is not a bad or problematic thing. Especially when they also lead the majors in walks.
It would be different if they were 15th in the league in HRs and that’s how they scored all their runs but that’s not the case. The only team that’s scored more runs this year is the Dodgers. The Yankees have a powerhouse offense, full stop, and this is coming from a Jays fan.
rct
“When you have a team batting average of .242, you are going to struggle”
Their team batting average is essentially league average. Their OPS, however, is 4th in the league and they’ve scored the second most runs in all of baseball. You have no idea what you’re talking about.

Boone is not even close to being fired. Cashman is the key.. If Hal ever had a clue, Cash, Boone, Coaching staff, and anayltical dept in that order…like a domino affect, but it won’t happen as Hal has no clue. He’s just a rich kid who inherited a basefall team which he has no clue how to run….he relies on Cashman.
TheDogDays
Typical response from people that can’t analyze properly.
Knee-jerk reaction: “blame management, blame rich owner”
Maybe we should actually blame the players, about 20 who arent producing close to their capabilities.
CaptainJudge99
That would be a dream come true.
Mickey777
REALLY need Stanton’s bat back! Wonder if he can close too?
BmoreBallistics
Their BP has gotten destroyed via injuries/ some regression. And the gm built this team poorly. Benny hasn’t worked yet.. montas not good. That cards cf still oin the dl. Stanton is per usual injuried. This is more cash man needs to go then Boone.
I’m sure someone who follows the Yankees closer could point out plenty of more roster building flaws cashman has made
Mickey777
Wonder who takes the fall of the Yankee fade continues? Cashman? Boone? Both?
When you approach the trade deadline and you need a left fielder, a center fielder, a closer, a SP, and bullpen reinforcements it says you lost the off season.
LordD99
Cashman’s contract is up, but he won’t take the fall. He’ll be renewed. The reason why is he’s doing exactly the job Hal wants. Keep the Yankees good and competitive, they’ve never had a losing season under his control, they make it to the postseason, the cash registers keep ringing. That’s what he wants. Hal’s goal isn’t to win the World Series, but simply be good enough to make it to the dance, or at worst be at the gymnasium door. Does he care about taking home the Prom Queen? I’m unconvinced.
sascoach2003
And, as a baseball fan and baseball historian, as well as quasi-Yankee fan, these are the things that frustrate. George would have fired the lot already, and figured out how to out-spend everyone. I also feel that is the bane of older Yankee fans. Unfortunately, this isn’t fantasy baseball where you can “stack the deck”. Soft caps, and changing analytical data in front offices now give teams that are willing to embrace it, learn from each, and, to me, the most important thing, develop their player development departments and organizational philosophy, are the franchises that consistent.
Mickey777
Agreed! Unfortunately as fans we can do little to change ownership.
Yankee Clipper
“ he’s doing exactly the job Hal wants. ”
Precisely. Moreover, Boone is paid for two more years, and unfortunately, Hal is the type of owner that says, “he’s getting paid to manage for two more years, so he’s going to manage for two more years.” Same as Hicks – they won’t cut bait because they’re paying him, which is counterintuitive and counterproductive.
Unfortunately, many of us had the Yanks finishing, at best, 3rd in the ALE, but thankfully they overachieved. I am contemplating if this is just the Yankees reverting back to their statistical normality for the year, given their roster.
I had very strong opinions coming into the year, which their current play aligns with, but I want to wait until all the data is in before I go down that road again. The most concerning aspect of their team performance to me is that they rid themselves of their weak links only to develop several more. I disagree with IKF getting blasted because he is what he always was, a weak offensive, strong defensive UTL player who can put the ball in play often.
Hicks is the worst veteran player in baseball, and I think the stats will support that this year. He hurts the team in so many ways that it’s difficult to quantify.
Chapman is not a closer anymore, particularly in must-win games. He’s been walked off for several seasons now, has had a ton of trouble locating, and his breaking balls are HR specials.
sascoach2003
I think you nailed the assessment. I especially agree with your overachiever hypothesis, and I suppose that’s what makes baseball the great game it is. On paper, some things look good, but numbers don’t lie, and especially trends in numbers over a certain period of time.
Mickey777
Clipper,
Yes, Chapman is no longer a closer. I believe his contract is up at the end of the season, good riddance. Hicks has really had a bad year, not sure he’s the worst veteran on all of baseball. I certainly understand your frustration with Hicks, however.

Yankees morale is down since Montgomery trade,,,Stanton wont solve the yankees hitting problem, Cash and Boone are not the problem,,,are the players dont hit
dadofdonnydownvote
That Montgomery trade is very puzzling.
rocky7
You have to view the Monty trade through the prism of the trade that didn’t happen…..Lopez of Miami……no doubt that Cash was trying to improve his up the middle defense not just for this year but for the foreseeable future with Bader…..the trade that didn’t happen post Monty was the Lopez trade that Kim Ngu nixed at the last minute….that’s the pitcher that Cash thought he upgraded his pitching staff that made Monty work for him….unfortunately it backfired.
Poster formerly known as . . .
People keep repeating this story about a trade for Lopez that was nixed at the last minute, but the source was a nonsensical claim by Craig Carton that the Marlins were on the verge of taking Hicks for Lopez.
More sensible rumor-mongers said it was a case of Cashman balking at the cost in prospects:
nj.com/yankees/2022/08/making-sense-of-yankees-mar…
In any case, it invites the question: why would you deal away a solid lefty starter on the hope of adding another pitcher whom you hadn’t yet acquired? That’s like paying the movers to empty your house and put all your belongings into a moving van before you’ve closed on your new house.

Watch Monty get pummeled in the playoffs
TheDogDays
Im not a fan of the Monty trade, but where is the evidence that move damaged morale?
Poster formerly known as . . .
Monty has only one postseason game to this credit. He pitched to a 2.25 ERA , giving up 3 hits and one run through four innings against the Rays before being replaced in the fifth by Chad Green, who got the win in a 5-1 Yankee victory. Why do you assume that Monty will get pummeled? Since joining the Cardinals he’s 3-0, having blanked the Yankees and Brewers and having given up one run to the Rockies.
jaysfansince1977
Jays could really use Mayza’s arm back in the BP
Dustyslambchops23
Him and Merryweather will be nice adds down the stretch.
Merryweather has looked phenomenal since coming back

Funny how unpredictable this sport is. The Yankees and Padres “won” the trade deadline and can’t buy a win now
MuleorAstroMule
And Gallo is raking.

I know it’s a small sample but I still have to laugh. Joey’s sporting the highest OPS+ of his career with the Dodgers.

How great could Stanton had been if not for missing over 500 games due to injury

Has anyone heard anything from Ducky Buckin Fent?
Yankee Clipper
It has been radio silence from DBF for months now. We hope he’s doing okay, but nobody has heard from him on here.
sascoach2003
Bob Tillman has been MIA, as well. Wishing both the best, good posters, realistic views even with their home teams.
brodie-bruce
same me and dbf have had a lot of good conversations about nyy and stl pbo/gm, hope there doing well and didn’t get ran off by the trolls. something tells me that dbf is just swamped with work right now construction is booming atm, at least in stl it is
Yankee Clipper
Great point Brodie. Hopefully he’s just gifted with a ton of work while it’s high season for him.
I hope you’re doing well, Brodie. Good to catch you in here too buddy.
brodie-bruce
@yc thanks you too man, i enjoy a lot of our convo’s on they nyy threads along with ybc, fink & dbf. you guys remind me that most fans of big market teams are not pompous mules saying there management is trash because they didn’t get soto or spend stupid money for a fa. unfortunately all fan bases have them idiots or trolls it’s also unfortunate because of ny size (like other big markets) more fans means more idiot fans, and sadly the idiots scream louder than sensible fans and they make every fan out to be a pompous ahole.
Yankee Clipper
Brodie, very true brother. I am excited to see Bader in pinstripes, man. I’ve enjoyed watching him run down balls for the Cards in CF. Speaking of, Goldie is on another level brother. I think he’s the clear NL MVP.
brodie-bruce
i would love to see goldy win an mvp he’s come close so many times that for a while his nickname was silverschmidt. imo i can see someone else winning the mvp because nolan and goldy are going to steal a lot of votes from each other that a player not named nolan or goldy has a pretty realistic chance to win
Yankee Clipper
Man, that makes a lot of sense, but I hope it doesn’t happen. Realistically, I just don’t see how one can vote for someone other than Goldy if he is being honest… Goldy has a really good glove and his offense is, quite literally, second to none this year. What a great player to see day-in and day-out.
alumofuf
I hate to say it because I like Boone. He’s also a Christian. But this season is slipping away and most likely it’s exit in our first round that we play. We have any chance of saving the season the Yankees have to fire Boone. They should do like George Steinbrenner and move him up in the team. The season is just slipping away.
itsmeheyhi
So if he was Jewish you would feel better about firing him?
TheDogDays
Lol that’s how the media works. Someone makes a comment about religion. And some pissed-off simpleton draws some ridiculous conclusion from it.
A microcosm of society.
itsmeheyhi
It was a question, not a conclusion. Talk about simpleton.
And I’m not in the media lol.
alumofuf
Also, it looks like the team has quit on Boone. This team cannot make a deep run at this time because it looks like they quit on him. How many shut outs has this team allowed during this stretch? That is embarrassing. Are they waiting for the fans to stop coming to the games?
whyhayzee
The Yankees didn’t let anything get in their way of winning 70 games, they never used a spot starter, they worked their rotation non stop. That’s expecting way too much of all of them except for Cole, but they’re making him throw 100+ pitches in quite a few starts. They did the same with their bullpen, only using “reliable” arms until they were worn out. They burned out their pitchers which made them need offense. But theirs is an injury prone roster of home run hitters who hit too many solo homers because their mates don’t get on base. The opposition in the AL East is very tough, and teams have figured out how to beat them. Yet, it’s still August, the month of slumps, apparently. It will be instructive to see what happens next.
TheDogDays
Lol @ opponents figured out how to beat them.
They’re simply playing terribly, doesn’t matter who the opponent is.
whyhayzee
Wow, that’s more than silly. Like the opponents have nothing to do with it? Watch baseball much? Follow baseball much? Play baseball much? Good lord, I’m speechless at the ignorance. Oh well, back to sitting on the porch. Hey, get off my lawn! Dang whippersnappers.
Poster formerly known as . . .
I’m lately seeing a lot of sportswriter sentences like this:
“New York’s right-hander shoved four no-hit innings, mowing the Blue Jays down while only allowing a few batters to reach.”
I don’t know who came up with “shoved,” but I look forward to the day when its shelf life expires and it’s retired to the graveyard of stupid buzzwords.
Okay, that’s my off-topic rant of the day. As for today’s Yankee news, I’ll just say I opted not to watch, anticipating another loss.
BTW, how many hits did Bader get today?
I fully acknowledge that I spoke too soon when the Yankees were cruising and I said I’d be been wrong previously about Cashman. As with the Gallo trade last year, he managed to find a way to screw up the season at the trade deadline.
Jordan Montgomery’s ERA with the Cardinals through 3 games: 0.54.
Fg-3
It’s true colors that show in the dog days of August. This team has no heart except for Judge and DJ Donaldson still has fire but no skills left. We will be lucky to hold the division
Mickey777
Have you seen the Sunday lineup? With a team that can barely score a run, Boone has both Marwin Gonzalez and Aaron Hicks in the starting lineup. Hope they both hit 2 homers, but realistically no one would play both of them when the team and the offense are in such desperate straights!!!! This decision by Boone is indefensible,
Yankee Clipper
I do agree with you about putting the weak bats in the lineup on the same day. It’s not a good move. But, I’m not quite sure this is all on Boone, honestly. I didn’t believe he should’ve been renewed to begin with, and he does have his issues; but to go from the most dominant team in MLB to a below average performer in the same season can’t be on the manager alone. Hicks should just be benched. & never see a batter’s box again.
Cashman’s roster construction, his historically failed FA attempts (for example, we could’ve had Machado at 3B), and questionable trades. He does knock some trades out of the park (Trevino), he’s usually very good with pitching (particularly relief), but some of his decisions are crippling the team and have for several seasons; they are/were: Gallo, Sanchez, Gleyber, *Hicks*, Marwin, etc. Defense has substantially improved but the offense is still struggling, except Judge, of course.
Poster formerly known as . . .
I wish Hicks would retire from baseball and become a professional golfer.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Florial gets a hit and an RBI yesterday, and what’s his reward? Hicks takes his spot in the lineup.
Mickey777
@Fink. They won today, but Gonzalez and Hicks 0-6. We just can’t afford that. I know Florial hasn’t been great, but that’s in VERY limited at bats. With Hicks I know what I’m getting with Florial I at least have hope.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Exactly, Mick. They’ve never given Florial a real shot. Look at how long it took Benintendi to get going in pinstripes, and he’s a veteran.
Yankee Clipper
Arguably more perplexing is the lengths to which they’ll go to continue putting Hicks out there. Florial can’t do any worse, and will likely do better simply because he’s younger and can play a more adept CF at this point.
I’m not sure anyone understands it. However, I am glad to see Boone’s demonstrative presser post-game last night. Perhaps that will get the players in gear. Either way, he’s right, players can’t continue fouling off pitching in the strike zone and expect to win.
