Despite rival teams’ interest in Zac Gallen, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale writes that the Diamondbacks right-hander is “not going anywhere.” This isn’t the first time Gallen’s name has surfaced in trade rumors, and after an injury-marred 2021 season, Gallen has re-established himself with some very solid numbers this season. Beyond just his ability, Gallen is also arbitration-controlled through the 2025 season, making it obvious both why other teams would want to acquire him, and why the D’Backs would want to keep him. Though it is increasingly looking like the D’Backs will be sellers again at the deadline, the club has been resistant to moving cornerstone players and going into rebuild mode — Ketel Marte (another popular trade candidate) was even signed to an extension back in March.
One player the D’Backs “would love to move” is Madison Bumgarner, Nightengale notes, but that is a tougher sell to suitors. After signing a five-year, $85MM deal with the Diamondbacks in December 2019, Bumgarner endured two rough seasons before bouncing back to more decent form thus far in 2022. However, it will take more than just decent numbers for Arizona to entice another team into taking on even a decent-sized chunk of the approximately $48.4MM still owed to Bumgarner through the 2024 season. Also, Bumgarner has a five-team no-trade clause, though the five teams on his current list aren’t known.
More trade buzz from around the league…
- Also from Nightengale, Robinson Cano has been some getting some attention, as the veteran slugger tries to revive his career with the Padres’ Triple-A team. Cano was suspended for the entire 2021 season and has posted only a .371 OPS over 77 plate appearances with the Padres and Mets this season, though he has been hitting well in the (batter-friendly) environment of Triple-A El Paso. Since either the Padres or a new team would owe Cano only the prorated portion of a minimum salary if he made a big league roster, Cano could be an interesting trade chip for any team that wants to take a flier on the former All-Star. From San Diego’s perspective, they probably wouldn’t expect much for Cano in return, or they could hypothetically include him as a part of a larger trade package.
- Martin Perez makes some sense as a sell-high trade candidate for the Rangers, though both Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News and ESPN.com’s Buster Olney feel it might be more likely that Texas keeps the veteran lefty and even looks to extend him into at least the 2023 season. Perez is enjoying a career year, with a 2.34 ERA over an even 100 innings, and a generally positive set of advanced metrics indicating that his performance isn’t a fluke. Perez has helped keep the Rangers on the outskirts of the wild card race, so if Texas can string together some wins in July, the team might not be selling at the deadline whatsoever.

Trade Bumgarner and cash to SF for Anthony DeSclafani, Tommy La Stella, Darin Ruf, & Jake McGee.
crazybaseballgal
Do that in a heartbeat depending on how much salary Giants would have to eat.
Clampdown420-69
Make bumgarner Corbin Carroll and you have yourself a deal!

Bumgarner and marte for juan Soto and Strasburg

I wonder if Bumgarner would wanna try some AL fare? Boston has starter issues, the luxury tax threshold doesn’t seem to intimidate them plus the contract ends in 2/24. Would the Sox trade for him?
deweybelongsinthehall
Not looking through my eyes. Boston is counting on Sales coming back soon and then Eovaldi, Whitlock and even eventually Paxton. The move the team will make us for a first baseman assuming Dalbec doesn’t get hot in the next month.
TradeAcuna
I’ll do Bumgarner/Ozuna contract swap any day of the week.
Smoltzy16
Bumgarner for Ozuna makes a lot of sense for Braves. Rosario is coming back, and Anderson is struggling in the rotation right now. Morton comes off the books after this yr and Bumgarner could step into that vet role for the rotation.
As for the Dbacks, don’t see why they’d want Ozuna. Braves would prob have to throw in a mid level pitching prospect to get it done.
Angels & NL West
D-backs need pitching. Thomas has already arrived and they have high upside OFs on the cusp – Carroll, Robinson and Fletcher. I suspect they may be trading OFs before they acquire one.
DarkSide830
How much would MadBum for Duvall do for your psyche?
Robertq50
Why – because of that domestic violence charge – no way would do it based on potential
joefleury
Bumgartner and a top prospect might entice for someone to take on that contract

Steve Cohen, are you listening?

Could have multiple players if either they add a tip prospect or pay down part of the cost like what Boston did with Price years ago.
Dogbone
How about Bumgarner for Heyward and Bote. Money is about the same.
Murphy NFLD
Apparently MadBums era+ is 114 this year 14% better then average adjusted by park??? He’s only going at about 6 k/9. he’s really having a tough time sense he went there I can believe he is only 33
Rsox
I would sort of hope that teams are smart enough to not give up anything of real value for Perez as he is bound to come back down to earth sooner or later.
Bumgarner back to the Giants does make sense if the price is right. I do not see Bloom biting on the $48 million dollar remaining price tag to bring him to Boston
gmenfan
Completely agree. Bumgarner + pieces to SF makes a ton of sense on paper. Giants certainly have the cash and need. Although, the fact that the new regime didn’t even approach Bumgarner about a new deal when he became a free agent makes me skeptical about their interest.
TonyGwynnSD19
Geez, unplug already. Bumgarner ain’t going back to Frisco . That ship has sailed. Giants fans are notoriously obsessed with nostalgia but the notion of Bumgarner returning to San Fran is just madness
Furthermore, the Giants are DONE. They’ve quite predictably played themselves out of contention the last 2 weeks. They ain’t Adding at the deadline
deweybelongsinthehall
Teams will listen to AZ and see what is offered. AZ will probably have to pay 50% of the cost AND add a decent prospect.
Chipsss
It’s not madness. I know I shouldn’t bother responding to a troll, but it makes sense to buy a prospect or two by paying off a bad contract. That’s a good way for the giants to get out of this awful mess they put themselves in by being cheap in the first place. And if that bad contract is a franchise icon it makes it easier
all in the suit that you wear
What is Martin Perez doing differently this year??
Rsox
Not pitching in the AL East
ButchAdams
I love Martin Perez, but if rangers can’t extend him AND get into wildcard spot, both, then trade him for best offer of pitching and outfield prospects. No need to keep somebody and get nothing in winter to not make playoffs.

Had a buddy of mine tell me the Cards were interested in MadBum, never heard who the source was that he got it from. Unless he’s coming in at a bargain price or package deal they need to stay away from the remaining money.

the bum is living up to his name
DonOsbourne
If Arizona agreed to take DeJong and eat a portion of his ’24 salary, the Cards might listen.
vincent k. mcmahon
Don I definitely think it would get there attention.

Cardinals pitching staff needs all the help it can get. Not much on the horizon either.
Deadguy
Yeah the Cardinals need pitching pretty bad, but Mozeliak is going to be unwilling to move any prospects. A trade for madbum does make sense for them. I have a feeling he might have no traded STL though

this year, the bum is nowhere near the praise heaped on him by writer mark
SanDiegoSuperDissapointingPadres
You got two offers from the Padres:
1. A new Tatis signed City Connect jersey (with his good hand) and 5 sticks of Mark Grant’s 30yr old baseball gum.
2. Robinson Cano.

You’ll see a hold here Imo- He’ll be owed around 10 mill for 2023 after the break and only 14 mill for all of 24

Trade rumors? Holy crap!
Cano? Not many potential landing spots for a dh that can’t hit… Maybe brewers take a chance?
Bum? There are a bunch of potential landing spots. Yankees, cards, braves, twins, Astros… He would be a 5th starter, but his post season success could be of interest.
Chipsss
The Giants love to employ DHs who can’t hit. They have 4 or 5 on their 26 man right now
mlb1225
It doesn’t take a statistician to know that Bumgarner’s ERA is empty. He is putting up career worsts in nearl every other stat. Low K-rate, mediocre walk and home run rate, career worst exit velo and hard hit rate, sub-40% ground ball rate. Moving Mad-Bum with his salary is a hard sell.
RunDMC
Bumgarner has a 5-team no-trade clause – who are the lucky 5 teams?
Holy Cow!
In SF, his no-trade teams were contenders. He ended up not being traded.
nottinghamforest13
An aged batter who can no longer hit and offers nothing in the field is an interesting trade candidate?
C Yards Jeff
@nottinghamforest13: agreed, and I’m thinking every GM in the league sees this is Cano. The only way I see a contender taking him is if a passionate owner with probably minimal baseball wherewithal steps in and tells the GM to take him.
highheat
Any RS fans see anything of value on the DBacks roster? A buddy of mine thinks that Walker would be a good pickup for Boston; also, I guess if Davies comes back healthy and picks up where he left off he could help hold what’s left of their rotation together.
For potential returns, I’m personally interested in Ceddanne Rafaela (a 5’8″, 152 lb, 21 yo in AA that’s R5 eligible; he has played 3B, SS, 2B, CF, LF, and RF and was the RS MiLB DPotY in his first CF forays).
Not a very high ceiling, but between R5 eligibility and his warts he may be attainable with an expiring contract (particularly one with low Luxury Tax implications).
Bruin1012
Yea you might want to take a closer look at Rafaela. He is absolutely breaking out this year. His defense has always been outstanding he is a plus defender at several positions including potentially an outstanding defensive centerfielder. His floor is a defensive 4th outfielder but he is breaking out offensively this year in a big way. He is rocketing up a very deep Red Sox prospects list he was promoted to AA and still maintaining his upward trajectory. I’m not saying that he won’t be traded but he will definitely be on the 40 man after this year and if you want Rafaela it’s going to cost quite a bit.
highheat
I’m very aware of the numbers, which is why I was asking if there was anything Sox fans see that was intriguing on the DBacks roster. Did you think anybody would be interested in a 5’8″ ballplayer if they weren’t breaking out? Lol. I’m very fond of the profile BECAUSE of the break out (profiles something similar to what Blaze Alexander would be doing on the roster longterm, but he’s also a RHB in the OF).
That’s why I brought up whether Walker would be interesting or not. He’s someone you might want to look closer at the numbers for (as you so kindly requested I do). He’s been far and away the best defensive 1B in the NL, his BB/K% have been better than career averages, and even with his .181 BABIP he has a 115 wRC+ (so positive regression can almost be expected, especially if he’s banging line drives off the Monster). Oh, he’s still controlled two more seasons after this one.
Last season Eduardo Escobar (an average player for his position with expiring team control) went for Hummel (a 40+ FV R5 eligible player) and Ciprian (a teenage lottery ticket).
Not saying that a deal like that will happen, just that there’s historical precedent. I’m a DBacks fan, at least let me have my dreams lol.
Bruin1012
Highheat didn’t mean to dismiss I just wanted to point out Rafaela’s ceiling is much higher then when the season started. If he hits with his defensive prowess then he can be a solid major leaguer. The Red Sox have need at first until Casas arrives don’t know if they have interest in Walker they may want to move toolsy outfielder Jimenez before Rafaela. Interesting idea but the snakes seem to have a lot of outfield types so not sure why the would want Rafaela. You guys are lucky you have Corbin Carroll really like that guy he’s going to be a star.
Fred McGriff HR
Your team should trade for Duvall. Apparently, he is a good hitter.14 hours ago
I’ll do Bumgarner/Ozuna contract swap any day of the week.
================================
Any team in the NL should trade for Bumgarner, because according to a poster on here, “Bumgarner equals NLCS and World Series.”
SupremeZeus
Snakes aren’t going to give up prospect capital to move bad Ks. Madbum is a shell of his former self with a boat anchor K. Maybe they can move him after the 2023 season. They will move Peralta. Probably see if there is any interest in Weaver, Pavin Smith and other 4th OF types that are the odd men out when the of prospects graduate. Certainly listen on Davies and Merrill Kelly and move either or both if they can get a substantial overpay. I doubt the snakes do much.
Angels & NL West
Hazen likes to walk the fine line between buyer and seller which I’m guessing he will do again this year. Peralta, Davies (if healthy) and Walker look like trade candidates. Hazen will field plenty of calls on Gallen and Marte, but I doubt he will trade either unless overwhelmed by an offer. Having watched MadBum, I can’t imagine anyone being interested in him. It’s a grind to get him thru 5 innings due to constant traffic on the bases and elevated pitch count.
Poster formerly known as . . .
I guess Hazen had best keep a close watch on that heart of his and keep his eyes wide open all the time.

Rangers just got swept by the freaking Orioles! When are they going to get rid of this idiot manager???? He’s a joke. Fire his ass now and get someone the players can relate to and they can still save this season. Woodward has to go!!!!
