Yesterday’s acquisition of Drew Waters gives the Royals a potential near-term option to evaluate in the outfield, and general manager J.J. Picollo spoke highly of Waters’ future when chatting with the Kansas City beat in the wake of the trade (link via Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star). Picollo called Waters a “plus defender” and a “true center fielder,” praising the switch-hitter’s speed and overall upside — even with Waters “still refining some skills” at the plate.
That’s a rather favorable characterization of a player who’s whiffed in 27.1% of his plate appearances during his third season at the Triple-A level, although to Waters’ credit, that strikeout rate is down considerably from his 36.1% mark in Triple-A in 2019 and from last year’s 30.9% pace. Struggles in the upper minors notwithstanding, Waters is still just 23 years old, has long been graded as a plus runner and potential asset in the outfield grass, and isn’t too far removed from a monster 2019 showing in Double-A. There’s plenty of reason to be optimistic about Waters as a player, even if his prospect star has dimmed in recent years.
The broader-reaching question for Royals fans — and for fans of teams seeking outfield upgrades around the league — is just what this trade will mean for the Royals’ outfield moving forward. The Waters acquisition isn’t likely to have much of a bearing on Andrew Benintendi’s future; as a productive and affordable free-agent-to-be on a last-place team, Benintendi was one of the likeliest trade candidates in all of baseball with or without Waters around. (We ranked him No. 2 on last week’s Top 50 trade candidate list.)
As MLBTR’s Darragh McDonald explored last month, however, Benintendi isn’t the only trade candidate in the Royals’ outfield. Center fielder Michael A. Taylor is having the finest season of his big league career, and he’s playing on an affordable two-year, $9MM contract. That makes it tempting for the Royals to keep him around into 2023, but Taylor’s greatest asset is his glove in center, and Picollo made clear the Royals view Waters as a plus option in center as well. There’s plenty of room for both Waters and Taylor to slot into the same outfield — especially assuming an eventual Benintendi deal — but it’s still of some note that the Royals would seemingly feel confident that Waters could step into Taylor’s shoes in the event of a trade, at least from a defensive standpoint.
Taylor has indeed drawn interest from other clubs, with MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweeting last night that the Yankees are among those who’ve considered him in their search for outfield upgrades. Taylor, hitting .264/.340/.385 and once again playing Gold Glove-caliber defense in center, would immediately become the best defensive outfielder on the Yankees’ roster (or on the roster of the majority of MLB teams). New York has been playing Aaron Judge in center field more than ever before, but Taylor could conceivably push Judge back to right field if and when the Yankees inevitably move on from Joey Gallo.
The Yankees are also known to be interested in Benintendi, and Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reported Sunday evening that the two sides have had “ongoing” talks regarding Benintendi for the past couple weeks. The asking price is believed to be high at present, Ackert adds. While the Yankees have now been linked to a pair of Kansas City outfielders, the Royals will surely receive interest in both Benintendi and Taylor from other clubs, just as New York will explore outfield options with other teams.
Further trades from the Royals aren’t necessarily a given. Picollo suggested that the team does not “feel the extreme need that we have to move any players,” though it’d be surprising if Benintendi, at the very least, didn’t change hands over the next three weeks. However, even if the Royals stand completely pat the rest of the way, Waters should get an earnest look in the big leagues before long, particularly with Kyle Isbel struggling and Edward Olivares only playing a limited role this year.

Don’t really see Michael A. Taylor as a good fit for the Yankees. Great center fielder but right handed and despite his good numbers this year he really is not a good offensive player. If the Yanks want a really good defensive CF, they can simply call up Florial. He would cost them nothing and is left handed. Benintendi and Peralta are much better matches.
kcmark
The Brewers would be a better fit for Taylor.
Rsox
Brewers, Phillies, or Astros all make sense for Taylor

If they’re going to keep ignoring Florial and make a trade, I think Ian Happ might be a better bet than Benintendi. His OPS+ is the highest of the three (him, Benintendi and Peralta) and he’s versatile enough to play infield and outfield. He’s got a +1 OAA and 1 DRS in center field this year, whereas Beni hasn’t played center since 2019.
The main thing against Peralta is his age (34). He wouldn’t be a long-term solution at center if they’re giving up on Florial. He hasn’t played center since 2016, but he’s a plus defender in left field. And he’s at the age when bat speed starts to decline for a lot of hitters.
Florial should be a valuable trade piece with his numbers this year in Triple-A and his comparative youth (24 years old). I’d rather they just brought him up and used their trade capital for pitching. That’s what they need most.
Mickey777
Fink,
Peralta would almost certainly be a rental, so his age isn’t really a major factor. Happ is quite versatile as you suggest, but which Happ are you getting? This year’s version or the one from the past few years? I keep going back and forth on bring up Florial or trade for Benintendi as the best choice. Peralta is not a bad fall back position at all.
Rsox
Peralta has all of 23 games in CF at the MLB level and none since 2016, he is not an option in CF period. If the Yankees pull the trigger on a Peralta trade odds are Judge becomes the regular in CF (which honestly doesn’t seem like a great idea either), same if they trade for Benintendi. If the Yankees want a CF option if not Taylor than Ian Happ, Tyler Naquin, Ramon Laureano, or Jonathan Daza might be better options
Mickey777
Rsox,
Hicks/Florial is the CF. Peralta strictly plays left. Absolutely not an option in CF. The Yankees have better options in CF than Michael A.Taylor. My guess is Taylor might be overwhelmed in NY.

Agreed Mick. If only cashman would stop prospect hugging. Now is the time to go all in

I hope AA trades for Joey Gallo. He needs the scenery change and not all the booing.
drasco036
Gallo has one destination (next year) written all over him… Colorado.
Rangy defender, plus for colorados huge outfield, less movement on breaking pitches would be a key for a guy as strike out prone as Gallo is.
Atlanta is the last place you want Gallo with all that humidity.
CNichols
I have a feeling AJ Preller is going to be all over him on his mission to collect all former Rangers top prospects. He’s theoretically a good fit for San Diego in that their biggest needs are OF help and LH power, I’m just really skeptical based on his current output that he’s actually going to be productive.
drasco036
Preller is an awful president of baseball operations so you’re probably right.

What’s left to trade?
Appalachian_Outlaw
I hope AA doesn’t even have a momentary daydream about trading for Gallo. I’d argue he isn’t a good hitter, and that ain’t just because he’s hearing some boos. If you want to point to his two forty homer seasons in Texas almost 5 years ago, I’d like to point out that even then he barely broke a .200 batting average. Now batting average isn’t everything, but it’s something.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
They just need to put Gallo in the 7 slot. He’s batting .268 there.
drasco036
Taylor is a potential fit for the Rays if they choose to be buyers at the deadline. Rays favor rub prevention above anything else when it comes to their outfield alignment.
I think wil Myers is a potential fit for the rays of a team such as the Cubs would be willing to eat his contract for a prospect and then flip him over to Tampa.
Sideline Redwine
If KK is out the rest of the year, indeed the Rays need to do something. Or maybe they shift Lowe to center? If they truly want to compete, they need to do something. I don’t know about Wil Myers at this point, but something.
drasco036
IMO, the rays cannot go all in nor can they punt the season. Taylor and (in the situation I described) Myers would make sense. You have to play the “maybe if I get lucky” card.
The Yankees on the other hand should be in overkill mode, Castillo, Happ, Robertson type guys and not Benintendi. Is Benintendi enough? Probably but making the playoffs isn’t. Yankees, Padres, Mets are in World Series or bust mode. You’re all in or your seasons a failure. Yankees are the best team in baseball and need to put their boot on the throat of the rest of the league. Not only do you get that much better but you prevent teams from getting their biggest needs.
RoyalsFanAmongWolves
And don’t forget people may not realize this but Michael A Taylor has a World Series ring with the nationals so he has playoff experience
Edp007
Isbel just Isnot mlb caliber.

Gallo will eventually be traded for virtually nothing, and return to being an above average player for his new team. But I don’t understand the Yankees burning need to give away prospect talent when, if it’s just a glove, they could call up Florial. The only economic reason against it would be starting his clock
oneiblnd
Chapman for Benintendi straight up. Chapman is a train wreck right now. Throw in Gallo for a bag of chips.

Why do the Royals need to rent an expensive closer? They’re going nowhere.

Michael A. Taylor is dealing with right shoulder soreness, likely due to pitching in a blowout. Mike Matheny should be fired immediately!

I wonder who originated the euphemism “tightness” for pain.

It’s overhaul time in KC (Finally!). They will play like they don’t need to move anything – but – they will move anything that isn’t nailed down. Santana is gone. Benintendi and Taylor will be out. If they can trade Dozier’s contract away – they will. Anticipate both Maikel Garcia and Nick Loftin to jump from AA to the majors.
RoyalsFanAmongWolves
No I don’t think they will jump both of those guys. plus we have bobby Witt at shortstop and Nicky Lopez can move over to third base if Emmanuel Rivera is not there. If anything, Michael Massey would make his debut before those AA guys. Plus only one of those guys you mentioned, Garcia, is on the 40 man. And I’m not sure if they would even promote BOTH Garcia and Loftin anyway because you can’t just do that and have immediate replacements available off the bench (for AA) not all the time anyway. Remember there have to be at bats available. Even if you move Hunter Dozier I think they would probably be playing Ryan O’Hearn more and not very many Royals fans want that. He’s still hitting under 200 Despite his 2 run single the other day.
Mickey777
According to Jon Heyman, due to Benintendi’s vaccination status the Yankees are probably out on trading for him. Since Michael A.Taylor is also unvaccinated, if they were in on him they’re out now.
Anyone know the vaccination status of David Peralta?
