The Tigers have signed right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez and assigned him to Triple-A, per Emily Waldon of Baseball America (via Twitter). Gonzalez has twice opted out of minor league opportunities this season, first with the Twins, and more recently with the Brewers. He did appear in the Majors with both clubs, tossing 11 1/3 innings over four outings (two starts) with Milwaukee and making two starts spanning seven innings with Minnesota. Overall, Gonzalez has registered a 6.87 ERA/6.01 FIP across 18 1/3 innings this season. In other recent news…
- Taylor Williams has signed with the Mariners and been assigned to Triple-A Tacoma, per Paul Braverman of the Tacoma Rainiers (via Twitter). The 31-year-old right-hander was a member of the Mariners in 2020, but he was dealt to the Padres in what turned out to be a beneficial deal for Seattle, who acquired Matt Brash, a breakout minor leaguer for Seattle in 2021.
- There is always a fair amount of turnover at the edges of Major League rosters at this time of year, but teams looking for relief help should have plenty of options on the trade market should they be willing to engage that route. As of right now, the relief market appears more “robust” than over positional trade markets, so says Mets GM Billy Eppler, per Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports (via Twitter). Just about every contender could use another relief arm or two.

Also maybe it’s just me but I see teams that might contend next year like the Orioles, Rangers, Pirates, etc. trying to add controllable relievers and controllable players in general. Should make for an exciting trade market over the next 10 days. I mean if Pittsburgh can get Colin Holderman out of a trade of Daniel Vogelbach that should signal good things for selling teams.

Agree with you Redsfan. I think its going to be a very unique trade deadline

Or just a sign that the Mets made a horrendous trade.

Billy Eppler is an idiot in general. He suggests that a .213 career hitter is an “impact” bat. Sad. Just sad. I’m sure teams are quaking in their boots now that Voglebach is on board.

Barrel Man #! is what he is! My Brewers still have barrel man #2 Rowdy! They both look like Barrell Man mascot of the Brewers. DV will hit right handers for home runs, and he walks a lot! He has a lot of enthusiasm and is a lot of fun!

Vogelbach will mash righties but has no business being in the lineup against lefties.

Agreed re: Eppler

Let’s not get carried away either though. A few months ago nobody knew who Holderman was lol. Just because he had a few appearances doesn’t mean he is the next Mariano. People get too carried away with this.

You build a team one piece at a time! The Pirates are about 2 years away from contending.

Holy Christ URASuperidiot77, please stop commenting such pure stupidity.
User 401527550
That’s great but that doesn’t mean you trade him for a guy that will have a heart attack going to first base.
mookiesboy
most relievers are year to year propositions
Mets tradded a guy having a good year and now they need to trade for two of them
cadagan
Pirates contending for what in 2 years? I don’t see how one could predict 6+ A ball players success translating into mlb success in 2 years.
They’ve been said to be 2-3 years away forever now. Because so many of their minor leaguers stall out.
If there were star new players in the pirates now that just came up. I might agree. I dont trust pirates development or assessment. There is very little track record. Is there anything they can hang their hat on? Not starters. Not position players. They have an average 3b and a cf currently.
yankeemanuno23
Pirates are usually following the same pattern over the last decade +, build up close to contend in Div and then they trade & cut $, to start all over. Sad. It’s gotta be the owners! Think how many ex-very good players left & on other MLB teams. Hope they break the pattern- btw How bout them Yankees!

Seems to be a new hope for small market team owners (and large market team owners who watch their “pennies”) What is it? The Houston Astros business model. First thing they did? Bring in new execs. There job? Gut the team. Go cheap. Slow rebuild to create a young controllable foundation of players. Once there, then (and this is the key), the exec tells the owner it’s time to exponentially expand payroll with FAs and veteran org players with little or no control leverage.
When execs like Williams and Elias go to Nutting and Angelos, will these owners pony up like Crane did and still does in Houston?
O’s fan here. Skeptical when Owner John Angelos hired Elias in late 2018. Skeptical no longer.
So Mr Angelos. When Mr Elias comes to you and says time to spend, will you do it?

tigers had the next 3 HOF pitchers on the way and Cabrera clone at !st ! One pitcher is good to AVE, one is having TJ surgery , and the other has the dreaded “shoulder issues”! Cabrera’s clone Hit .195 with 5 homers in 300 AB . he is demoted to AAA. They may all come around in a few year OR be out of baseball. Its hard to predict the future success of prospect.
so all you fan that are counting on your team contending in a year or so may be setting yourself up for a HUGE disappointment. AS I have been!!

@Panic in Detroit:I hear ya. Very true, a lot of variables determine both current and future outcomes/success in this game. Grateful that John Angelos has a plan in place. And from what it looks like, it resembles Mr. Crane’s in Houston. Translation. There’s hope here in Baltimore. I’ll take it. Cheers!
Oh, Os fan since 65. Bleed black and orange. I have seen a lot of highs and lows with this team. Eventually, hopefully sooner than later, it’ll get good again.
My favorite Tiger. That Baltimore boy, Kaline.

Boog powell , frank Robinson and the almost5 20 game winners of 1970 (?) my ex tiger Pat Dobson…….Denny McLain was and is my favorite tiger. The most victories for a pitcher in 90 years and nobody knows who he is!!! ……..as a young teenager, me and my friends sat at Tiger Stadium and watched as he won his 30th game.. ……..140 wins by the time he was 25 years old..

Denny McClain. What a beast!
Brooks was the man in Bmore back then and still my hero today.
Same era, different ballparks. For me and the fellas, we lived out in the right field bleachers at Memorial Stadium. Great times.
To better times for both franchises in the here and now … and hopefully sooner than later!

The Tigers won’t compete. The owner thinks someone is dumb enough to buy the team. If you see that all decisions are made from the perspective that the owner wants to sell the team, all the moves make sense.
panic in detroit
I don’t think the family is looking to sell’ They have built a financial gold mine in the sport area in Detroit and the Tigers and Red Wings are the centerpiece of that empire!
stymeedone
Signing ERod and Baez were not moves one does if preparing to sell. Injuries hit hard this year. Its going to make assembling next years team more difficult, as they won’t know health until next year. Schoop will not be opting out after the year that he had. Which Candelario will they see moving forward? They won’t be offering Barnhart the extension they hoped he would deserve. Will Rogers be ready to C? Avila will get one last year to get it right.

Camilario was pd $5.8 mill this year. Without a MAJOR turnaround he will be non-tendered and leave or resign for a more deserving salary
