The Padres placed left-hander MacKenzie Gore on the 15-day injured list this afternoon, announcing he’s dealing with elbow inflammation. Righty Dinelson Lamet has been recalled from Triple-A El Paso to take his spot on the active roster.
San Diego received a scare when Gore departed last night’s outing due to elbow soreness. The prized young hurler told reporters today he feels alright, but the club won’t know much about his long-term status until he heads for further testing (link via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com). In any event, at least a brief IL stint seemed an inevitability after yesterday’s premature exit, even if just as a precaution.
Gore made his major league debut earlier in the year and has had a generally impressive rookie season. The 23-year-old posted a 4.27 ERA through 13 starts, but he’s kicked to the bullpen recently as the club keeps an eye on his innings. He’ll now miss at least the next two weeks, opening up a spot for Lamet. The right-hander has been tagged for 13 runs in 10 2/3 innings of relief this season, bouncing between San Diego and El Paso on options and recalls. The Friars sought a trade partner for Lamet — who’s making $4.775MM — earlier in the year, and it stands to reason the front office will continue trying to move him before next Tuesday’s deadline.
While the Gore news is certainly worrisome for the Friars, they have gotten positive updates on a few other players. The most notable is that star shortstop Fernando Tatís Jr. progressed to taking live batting practice this afternoon (video provided by Dennis Lin of the Athletic). It’s the latest notable step in the recovery for Tatís, who has missed the entire season due to a fracture in his wrist. The timetable for his return to major league action is still uncertain, but he’s on track to impact the club’s hopeful playoff push at some point down the stretch.
That’s also true of a pair of potential high-leverage relievers. Left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who has been out for almost a full calendar year after undergoing surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon, has been throwing to hitters of late. Manager Bob Melvin indicated he could soon head out on a minor league rehab assignment (as relayed by Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune). Meanwhile, offseason signee Robert Suarez is embarking on a rehab stint of his own today, per Acee. The hard-throwing righty has been on the shelf since June 7 due to a right knee issue, but it seems he’s on track to return around when first eligible early next month.

So what biannual move do the Padres pull this deadline that will cement them as the team that looks great on paper but the on the field results are not to expectation…but if the Dodgers got this guy(s), they would be an MVPs and Cy-Youngs?

Corey Dickerson: Game Changer.

When Tatis gets back into the game, he’ll have as much rust as the sunken Titanic. I hope he adheres to the basic rules because BB is better with him than without him.

Curly was the Smart Stooge:
So what do you base the fact Tatis will be so rusty on exactly?
He has missed large chunks of time 3 times before and not only didn’t come back rusty he homered in his first game back each time and never looked back.
He has had one 3-4 week “slump” in his 3 year career and it wasn’t due to “rust”.
Much more likely this kid comes back guns a blazin just as he’s always done.
Shrutefarm
What impact, if any, does Gore;s recent injury have on their odds to get Soto?
Brew’88
The give up Morejon instead, which would not be desirable.
globalform
Giving up Morejon would be a huge mistake. He’ll be a young salary controlled stud in the rotation next year. Gives them a lot more payroll flexibility. With Tatis coming back, and Gore out-I do NOT give up Morejon in any deal. 99.5 on the gun more then once a couple nights ago. And if you hear Jarlin Susana’s name mentioned in any trade talk-get scared, because that kid is the next big thing for the Pads. We cannot trade him, either!
Brew88
Completely agree. Among Morejon, Gore, and Patino, I always felt Morejon was the more likely to have success in MLB. Susana is to me the pitching version of Wood on the Pads’ farm. Too much upside to trade, especially when their trade value is low (still very young).
Pads Fans
None.
Look at the trade for Sale as the precedent for the Soto trade.
Crunchtime1969
Padres haters are like fleas on dogs.
They’re ten games over .500. Might make the playoffs. Exciting pitching staff. Got relievers and Tatis coming back. Might pick someone up via trade. Things are looking up.
CKinSTL
They were just a super hyped team.. the message boards blew up declaring them WS Champs in the offseason.
They’re not a bad club, they just haven’t come anywhere close to reaching their potential. I think they’ll be fine but Pads fans might not be too comfortable.. they had almost the exact same record at this point last year but finished with a losing record for the year.
MyCommentIsBetter
The message boards also hyped up the Blue Jays like they were the best team in the league too (at least in the AL). They don’t get nearly as much hate for a team performing at the same rate. And I’m not a Padres fan, actually the opposite. I think their fans are obnoxious and not far off from Yankee fans who think their middling prospects are worth star players. Just saying that while the Padres get a lot of flack, they’re just as good as they should be, right around where they were ranked preseason.
fox471 Dave
Padres aren’t hated, Barely. Just get tired of the hype and the fact they muddy the water on every trade.
oldguyG
What about pierce Johnson He should be on his way back too.
Javia135
So the Padres will be adding a bat with a lifetime .965-OPS and 160-OPS+ in Tatis. That’s a HUGE add. The Padres are already adding a Soto quality bat at the deadline without having to trade away the farm. Maybe they should hold on to their prospects this year.

Preller downplaying Gore’s injury so he can pawn him off in a trade.Like he did with Paddack
Deleted Userr
When exactly did Preller downplay Paddack’s injury? Hell, the Mets chose not to trade for him BECAUSE of his injury. Stop trying to troll.
DLL 2
Sorry it’s not Trolling when someone calls Preller out. He’s falsified health reports in the past.Preller knew Paddack’s true health history but chose to scam the other GM.But Preller for played in the end because Rodgers always implodes as the season goes along.
Brew’88
Paddack sat out end of last year with the injury, tried to pitch this year but couldn’t. My 10 year old knew about his health issues, are you saying the Brewers (and you apparently) were the only ones who didn’t?
Deleted Userr
@DLL 2…
“He’s falsified health reports in the past.”
But is there any evidence that he falsified health reports in the individual case of Chris Paddack?
“Preller knew Paddack’s true health history but chose to scam the other GM.”
Ok and I’m sure you will provide the evidence of this.

@Brewer88 Twins*
Brew’88
Ah yes, thanks. late night thoughts….didn’t mean to pick on the Brewers.
Jung Like My Daddy
Yeah. He didn’t falsify health records. Prellers medical staff didn’t include giving players Tylenol IBprofin or whatever over the counter stuff it was at the time.
The Red Sox got a healthy Pomeranz while Padres got Espinoza who was damaged goods.
Colin Rea pitched 3+ innings for the Marlins before getting injured.
It was much to do about nothing.
Michael Macaulay-Birks
Sad Espinoza did not work out, he had a cannon for an arm
Deleted Userr
@DLL 2 Still waiting on that evidence broseidon.
TDR
Paddocks arm issue was in the injury report and was on the IL last year, not like they hid it the twins decided it was worth the risk. Also why don’t the Indians get heat for trading damaged goods? Just about every pitcher they’ve traded the last few years has gotten seriously hurt almost immediately (Clevinger, Kline r, carrasco)
DarkSide830
Good to see a Pomz update. Felt like the dude had fallen off the face of the Earth.
mlb1225
One of the many “good when healthy, just never healthy” guys.
Brew’88
Padres are desperate for RP help, Rogers is a mess right now, could be the worst pen in NL
CNichols
@Brew I totally understand why you think that because Rogers performance has fallen off a cliff and they need to do something about the 9th inning, but the pen as a whole actually isn’t that bad. It probably looks worse than it is because they’re always in close games since the offense isn’t producing like it should.
In terms of NL ranks they’re 3rd in FIP, 3rd in WHIP, and 6th in ERA. With a healthy Pom and Johnson I think it’s a playoff caliber pen.
Brew88
@ CNich. It’s not just Rogers I’m worried about, it’s Hill, Stammen, Garcia and the fact that most of the best performances from the pen have come from SPs (Martinez, Morejon, etc..) who have been thrust into RP due to how thin (or bad) the actual RPs are. I know they are supposedly getting healthy in a month or so, and it will be interesting if Pomz and PJ snap immediately back into form, but right now I have little trust in Garcia/Rogers as playoff caliber finishers and that’s based upon the last 2 months, not the first 2 months of season. Maybe I’ve grown spoiled by excellence of past Padre bullpens. Anyway, we’ll see!

Stammen ,Hill gotta go .Rogers and Garcia demoted to middle relief only until proven otherwise they aren’t getting high leverage situations done. Allow to many men on base via BB ,HB,hits . Morejon should be eased into more late inning reliever need to pick up a closer at deadline

An extra rub or two a game with Tatis would be huge
Deleted Userr
We could all do with an extra rub or two…
larry48
Gore looks bad as a starter and worse as a relief pitcher. Gore stayed in minor for several years because he pitched poorly.
jeffmaz
Gore was already pitching like he was injured. Hopefully he’ll be back this season. This is why you don’t trade away your pitchers.
DLL 2
It’s amusing to watch Preller get played by the other owners.Preller is the only one to trade the cream of their farm system to a player who will walk in two years.Padres need relievers and starters more the one hitter
bitterpadresfan
Tons of teams would do it. Soto will go down as one of the best players ever to be traded. Even with him and Tatis I question whether this team has enough but don’t act like Soto isn’t that type of talent. When he inevitably ends up on the Dodgers they might as well cancel the end of the year.
Billy Baroo
Soto’s situation is similar to Miguel Cabrera. Traded by Marlins to Tigers with two full years of control left. Detroit traded the cream of their farm to get Miggy. They also got Dontrelle WIllis, whose value had fallen sharply. None of the players Florida received did anything for them. Lots of GMs would absolutely do the same for Soto and never look back, regardless of how the prospects performed later. You don’t often get the chance to bring in a Top 5 player for 2+ years.
I don’t know if Soto’s the right move for the Padres. The rotation’s showing signs of cracks and includes three impending FAs, four if you count Martinez as a starter. The bullpen is on the verge of grotesque. Multiple weak spots in the lineup. But if there’s a player you empty the farm for, it’s a player like Soto.
outinleftfield
Gore has looked tired or injured his last 4 appearances. His velocity was down and he started walking people. Looks like he may be the next TJ recipient.
