The Orioles have reached an agreement Jackson Holliday, the first overall selection of the 2022 MLB draft, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Heyman reports that Holliday will get a bonus “just a touch” higher than the $8.185MM received by Druw Jones, the second overall pick. Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Sun reports that the bonus is $8.19MM.
The #1 overall pick came with an accompanying slot value of $8.84MM. It seems like the Orioles will save around $650K to spread around to some of their other draft picks.
The Orioles have a bonus pool of $16.933MM at their disposal, the largest amount for this year’s draft. Teams are allowed to outspend their pool by as much as 5% without losing future draft picks, although there is a 75% tax on the overage. That means the Orioles can spend around $17.78MM in bonuses, though it seems Holliday will take close to half of that.
Holliday, 18, is a second generation baseball talent, as he’s the son of long-time big leaguer Matt Holliday. The left-handed hitting shortstop was ranked the #3 player in the draft class by Baseball America, ESPN and MLB Pipeline, #2 by FanGraphs and #6 by The Athletic. BA compliments all aspects of his game, giving him at least 55 on the 20-80 scouting scale in the five categories for position players (60 hit, 55 power, 60 run, 55 field and 60 arm).
Holliday had committed to Oklahoma State but will seemingly forgo that commitment to join an Orioles organization that keeps swelling with talent. Adley Rutschman recently graduated out of prospect status but was considered by many to be the top prospect in the game prior to that. Even without Rutschman, the O’s have four players on the top 100 list at BA, with pitchers Grayson Rodriguez (#4) and DL Hall (#51) slotted in along with shortstops Gunnar Henderson (#7) and Jordan Westburg (#97).

Oh, I thought they didn’t get a living wage.
lerdky
MOST minor leaguers do not earn a living wage, and receive a small bonus (if any at all) when they are drafted or signed.

Imagine you are a tenth round pick who muddles around in low level minors for a few seasons. You get 150k when you sign, then 5000 a month. That money won’t last you that long, and eventually you are broke with no college diploma, which is a pretty awful spot to be in.
flamingbagofpoop
Who’s fault is it that they have no college degree and chose a career with the potential you outline?

I am sure a lot of people on here would leave their job for a 150k signing bonus and 5 grand a month. They even provide housing for you now. And if you get hurt you will get the best medical care available.

It’s not hard to imagine, my nephew went in the 14th round and got $125K and the promise to pay for college. Five years later, he’s had two TJ surgeries and a third nerve surgery. Two minor league innings five years ago and he can start throwing again in September. He’s taken college courses, coached at his alma mater, and worked for the local training facility. It’s a long road but if he makes it, I’ll go anywhere to watch him pitch in the majors.
gr81t2
That may be a fact, but so what. They volunteered for the job, no one forced them. They want to play a game as a profession? Well, that’s the risk and that’s the pay.

Why do so many people on here honestly think that just because these are baseball players the owners should just give them everything. Always make it sound like they are treated so horrible. These guys don’t have to be baseball players. Nobody twisted their arms.
GriffeyJrFan
Are you going to pay to see the owners in their box seats with no players. The owners are the least important part of the equation.
User 3595123227
What a stupid way to look at it.
BeansforJesus
Actually it’s not a stupid way to look at it. The players are the product.
Why do people only consider player salaries in a vacuum without considering total MLB revenue? The owners aren’t going to sleep with you guys no matter how many times you defend them.
User 3595123227
Actually it is a stupid way to look at it. Game or not this is a business. The players are the employees. I’ve read before “people don’t pay to see the owners sitting in their luxury suites.” You only thinking about what you see on the surface? I’m sorry but the owners have every right to make the money they do and they also treat these players really well. I’m not defending anyone. The business of baseball is no different than any other business. It’s about making money and I’m sure they all do well in this business.
BeansforJesus
“I’m not defending anyone”, he says in sincerity, as he defends the owners.

I really didn’t think it would be this difficult to comprehend but I was wrong. Go to work today and be sure to tell your boss what you are going to do today and how and when you are going to do it. I know you won’t understand what I’m saying here but your kind can’t be helped. Intelligence and ability to think beyond what you see on the surface doesn’t seem to have a place with you.
User 401527550
Minor leaguers aren’t contributing to mlb revenue but are drawing off of it. The players won’t sleep with you either.

The days of a college degree being important are coming to an end. 30 years ago, no one was going to college, so having a degree set you apart.
As an employer myself – I used to require college degrees for my new hires, but I found I was much better off hiring people that were willing to work hard, put their time in and learn their skill.
I went to college, and if you did too, ask yourself – what did you learn in college that you are applying in your job today? I can’t think of anything. I would have been much better off investing 4 years in my career, but I was led to believe a degree was necessary.
Don’t get me wrong – there are some professions where college is important – law, accounting, medicine, but why does my orthopedic surgeon need to be taking an Elements of Weather class when he could be spending more hours either studying in his field or getting more hands-on experience.
Influencing ppl to get college degrees is one of the smartest and most profitable things the government ever did. Who backs a lot of those college loans? The government. Who makes the interest? The government. If you don’t pay your loans, they’ll take your tax return $.

Why can’t they get a degree with that 150k?
lucas0622
Jackson Holliday and any other first round pick are one-in-a-million players based on their talent. He doesn’t represent the other 1000s of players getting drafted, signing for the minimum of $5000, and then making even less per month as they live their dream after working for the first 15+ years of their life
pinstripes17
They make like 11k a year

When I played baseball in my 30’s, I had a number of highly talented teammates. Some were drafted, some were not. A number of them passed on being professional players or were only for a short period of time. Most of them eventually had college degrees and were gainfully employed. It’s not like every player who gets drafted goes pro. Of course, this was when there were a lot more rounds and a lot more minor league teams. Heck, my team was considered the equivalent of the old D league for those of us ancient enough to remember. One former coworker was teammates with Piazza at AA level. He had broken the D3 home run record, which has since been broken. He walked away when he was sent back to A. He’s since had a wonderful productive career in education. People move on, sure they had a dream, but they realize how incredibly talented you have to be and injury-free and in the right place at the right time. It’s a bit of a crap shoot for all but the sure fire can’t miss talent and even then there’s no guarantees. There are lots of fields where you can thrive without the risk.

He’s gonna end up making more than the old man lol like Vladdy jr et al

Wow…. Thought they took him over Jones because of money, but I guess they just really didn’t want a CF
sufferforsnakes
Don’t they already have a good one?
deron867
They supposedly have a glut of young outfielders already. But they also have a couple of good SS on the way as well. One of them will undoubtedly have to move to 3rd or 2nd
misterb71
Starting shortstops are usually the best athletes on their teams and frequently move off the position as they move up the rungs of the baseball ladder. I’m not doubting Jones’ abilities — I’m just suggesting that drafting a highly-ranked shortstop likely gives the O’s greater flexibility in developing Holliday and finding the best path for him to get to the Majors and be as impactful as possible.
Edp007
Gonna be the last number one pick for the orioles for a while now

Must be surreal. Also no offense to Jackson Holliday, but he looks 12 years old and he looks kinda small still. Obviously he had the skillsets, not just the family pedigree and name, to be drafted number one overall.
Also yeah if Druw Jones got $8.185M at number 2, one would hope Jackson got significantly more- I do mean significant, not a lot, just enough to symbolize that he went no. 1 in the draft.
I wonder if they were close to a deal, then Druw Jones got his money and that was too close or right around where Holliday’s number was at, so it forced them to add enough for it to feel like the number one pick money.
I am guessing $8.685M or something like that. An extra $500k is symbolically enough more given that he’s number one. Any less would be a slight insult and much more wouldn’t really be necessary.
flamingbagofpoop
What the number 2 pick got doesn’t matter. Saying it’s insulting is laughable. Last year davis got less than leiter, for example.
YourDreamGM
I would assume they had it worked out before the draft. If a kid told me I need more than the 8 and a half million or whatever agreed too I would tell them to enjoy college.
Flaming is correct and Baltimore has even used this strategy.

So many things to comment to…. first of all, as baseball fans, be happy for this kid. He could be a bust or boom… we shall see. Second, doesn’t matter what he looks like… he isn’t walking down a runway he is hitting baseballs on the biggest stage in the world and I guarantee you looks don’t matter! My 3rd point… stop giving your opinion like it matters… news flash.. owners, managers, players or the rest of the MLB does not care what you think, what your family thinks, or how good your managerial skills are from your moms basement…. if you don’t like what happens in baseball then it’s real simple… stop reading websites and posts about it and just hit the power button on your TV. Problem solved… to you other peeps that are rock solid, keep on keeping on!!!
