Although it’s a few weeks late due to the lingering schedule effects of the COVID pandemic, the NHL free-agent period kicks off today at 11 AM CT. Pro Hockey Rumors (@prohockeyrumors on Twitter) has all-day coverage of the busiest and most exciting day in hockey.
Some teams were busy yesterday keeping their star players from hitting the open market. The Pittsburgh Penguins came in at the eleventh hour to re-sign franchise cornerstone Evgeni Malkin to a four-year deal, while the Edmonton Oilers were able to retain left wing Evander Kane, who led the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs in goals, on a four-year deal as well.
There’s still plenty of drama left to unfold today, however. After a 115-point season, former Calgary Flame Johnny Gaudreau is hitting the open market and is undoubtedly the top free agent available. Likely to earn eight figures on his next deal, does he head to the Eastern Conference as expected? After winning the Stanley Cup this season with the Colorado Avalanche, where do center Nazem Kadri and goalie Darcy Kuemper land?
To keep up with what’s sure to be a chaotic news day, make sure to keep up with Pro Hockey Rumors’ coverage of breaking news.

Coincidentally, it was Malkin who broke his leg with the shot.

“Who cares about hockey!!! TOO much movement and action!!!”
“I like to watch guys with OCD step in and out of a painted box to adjust their gloves all night!”
“Why is the puck in play so often? Boo!”
BobGibsonFan
I wish they brought back that glow around the puck… I lose it because it goes so fast and the camera is moving all over the place.

Fair.
Best advice I can give to new fans is to not worry about following the puck and learn to identify who has the puck, which is different.
The player with two hands on his stick with the stick on the ice either has the puck and anticipates a pass from whoever has the puck. The defenders will usually face whoever has the puck.
Players without the puck will often “pitch hay” where the stick is carried parellel to the ice, not ready to handle the puck or with one hand on the stick.

Hockey is hard to follow on TV bc the camera is so far away from the action most of the time. If you aren’t someone that knows the players, it’s hard to know one player from another.
I enjoy watching it in person, but I’ve tried to watch it many times on TV, and I just don’t enjoy it.
I’m sure some people say the same about baseball, but when I’ve watched baseball with people that are fans, but not super into it, and I start explaining the “chess-type” strategy to everything, they appreciate it more – like where a pitch is likely going to be thrown, what kind of pitch, why it’s being thrown.. or just like how one pitch will be a high fastball to change eye levels – and there’s no intention to get him to swing, but it’s to setup the next pitch in the dirt.
However, if you just look at the game as people standing around until the ball is hit, yea.. there’s not much to enjoy.

I think the problem with televised hockey is the main game action camera…instead of the view from center ice, the main cameras should be above and behind the goalies so you can follow the puck/action as the goalie sees it…

It always amazes me when the TradeRumors site promotes their coverage for other sports and you always get the people who go “I didn’t come to this site to read about this sport”. Like it literally takes you more time to type out that comment than it does to just skip the post lol. It’s not like their promoting some random other company’s site…it’s their sister site that covers a different sport. Don’t care about hockey? Skip the post. No one is making you read it.
semut
You seem more upset about people saying “NHL?” than the actual posters themselves. To use your own advice, don’t like the comment? Keep scrolling haha

Upset? Not at all. In fact I appreciate Trade Rumors and all their sub sites mentioning that another sport’s free agency or trade deadline coverage is starting. I enjoy all four sports but it can be easy to lose track of one or the other during their respective offseasons. At the end of the day, Trade Rumors is a largely free site that thousands of people use as like a gathering site of recent sports news. Trade Rumors putting out an article supporting one of their sister sites is hardly a thing people should be upset about.

What the puck! I guess for MLB Rumors we need to head over to the NHL Rumors page.

No it’s not. It’s just that this is a baseball board where people come to read baseball news. If I wanted NHL news I would go to ESPN or Foxsports

I’m still waiting for soccer rumors – tired of going to few dozen sites trying to catch all the transfer rumor from the Premier League. I would even pay to join.
