Why are there so many blue jays fans at the game today? Where do you guys come from? You live in Vancouver but root for the Jays?
Today was a circus. Definitely a fun game to go to! But I feel as though 75% of those Jay fans were not there for a ballgame; they were there solely to troll.
Pedro 4 Delino
Blue Jays are Canada’s team
NWMarinerHawk
But, but…
Toronto is on the complete opposite end of Canada. Shouldn’t they be Mariners fans, if they are MLB fans that actually live close to here, and nowhere near Toronto?
Nationalism. Regionalism. Whatevs
Fred Park
NWMarinerHawk, there’s no logic to it.
Fred Park
It’s always been that way, even back in the days of Dave Niehaus and Rick Rizzs, people wondering where all the Jays fans come from.
Jays trolls and Yankee trolls.
There are a lot of Canadians in Seattle, and even Portland.
KamKid
They have national TV coverage. Access really. Geographically, I should be a Twins fan, but I don’t have the same access (or history). I even align more with Minnesotan culture than I do Torontonian. Streaming might start to change that as long as regional blackouts don’t extend across the border.

No way would the Cubs turn down Hassell and Myers for Happ.
Jean Matrac
I agree. Even with Myer’s negative trade value, he and Hassell still have a higher trade value than Happ. The team that turns down that trade proposal is the Padres.
drasco036
I wouldn’t be so sure that Myers has negative trade value just in terms of player.
Just saying in the situation above, cubs trading for hassell and Myers, the cubs could absorb most if not all Myers contract and trade him to a team like the Rays
Jean Matrac
Well, I went to the trade simulator to look at those three. Myers MTV was -7.5. And I agree with that, since Myers hasn’t played much, still isn’t back yet, is overpaid, and will only provide a couple months of service if he does play. If that isn’t negative trade value I don’t know what is.
I forget the exact numbers for the other 2, but even subtracting Myers’ number, it still left the Cubs some 10-15 points shy. Happ has surprisingly good trade value, but Hassell’s high MTV surprised me even more.
drasco036
I think that is heavily bias due to his contract and value. From the Cubs perspective, if you’re eating his contract anyway, eating that contract and flipping him would get them something in return. Joc pederson had a negative WAR when the Cubs sent him to Atlanta and they managed to get Bryce Ball in return. Myer isn’t getting anything thst resembles a top prospect but a “here is a 17 year old kid we signed out of the dr for 250k with a projectable body” is a possibility.
petersdylan36
I thought that too. Myers will be a free agent after this year. No way the padres do that.

Re: trading coaches – Marlins did this when they dealt Trevor Williams to PIT to get one of their pitching gurus.
NWMarinerHawk
Ms traded Sweet Lou Pinella to the Rays for Randy Winn back in ‘03. I want to say it was a straight up deal but I think there might have been a no name throw in as well. It was pretty shocking for me as a middle schooler. Lou was a big part of my childhood, lol

Yet another chat with no White Sox questions answered…
Sid Bream Speed Demon
No fan base that is less secure than the White Sox.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
And doesn’t Cease still play for them? Literally the 2nd question.
DarkSide830
Goldy being 3rd in WAR since Trout’s rookie season shows just how underrated this dude is. He’s a perrenial All-Star who has such a unique skillset for 1B. He hits for power and average, plays a great 1B, and is a keen base-stealer. I feel like, since his great 2013 season, he’s been overlooked.
VonPurpleHayes
I think less so since he’s been a Cardinal, but I still agree. The guy is a stud.
VonPurpleHayes
Less underrated I mean. Not less talented.
VonPurpleHayes
I don’t think that Bryce Harper is the second best player of our generation as the commenter asks, but I also don’t think WAR is the best stat to evaluate that (as Mark responded with WAR), particularly when it comes to catchers.
DarkSide830
WAR hates Bryce’s defense for some unknown reason. In fact over the years Bryce has been in Philly, I have not once thought that he was below average in RF and usually looked at him as slightly above. But the algorithm said it’s bad so I guess it’s doctrine…
Mark Polishuk
This is a fair point, since WAR (either it’s the Fangraphs or Baseball Reference versions) isn’t a catch-all statistic. I just found it interesting and a little surprising that Posey was second….not that he wasn’t a great player, but I wouldn’t have thought he was that high up given all his time missed.
drasco036
I would say Harper is probably top five but trout and betts stand alone. Guys like Soto and acuna jr. Could jump into the conversation also.

Best mid-season acquisition so far is my man Jerry snagging Carlos Santana from the Royals. Has hit 3 homeruns in two games, helped us sweep the hapless Blue Jays. Seattle on upward trajectory. Jays writers saying Santana sure would have fit nicely on their side.
DonOsbourne
I like the idea of Dejong for MadBum a little more all the time. The D-Backs would probably have to cover a pretty good chunk of the ’24 salary. But the Cards could make it worth their while by adding a prospect(s) to make the money work. I realize he’s declining, but he might find the Cardinals defense to be a fountain of youth. Taking on a bad contract is the only way the Cards are getting DeJong off the books. They are more likely to find surplus value in a pitcher than a struggling position player. Jeff Albert couldn’t fix a sandwich.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Send DeJong to the Yankees, did you see what they did to your old pal Carpenter?
DonOsbourne
I like it. I really like DeJong. I hope someone can turn him back into a ML hitter. As I posted earlier, Jeff Albert is not going fix anyone.
Angels & NL West
Where would DeJong play on the D-backs? The D-backs aren’t competing this year and have Marte, Rojas, Perdomo, Lawler and Ahmed to cover 2B, 3B and SS for the foreseeable future.
Ahmed is injured for the remainder of this year, but offers the same glove first skill set as DeJong. Im guessing the D-backs young guys continue to get ABs for the remainder of ’22.

I doubt AJP trades Hassell for less than 3yrs of control type (Reynolds (need to add more than just Hassell)/ Hays (need to add a bit)/Laureano probably don’t need to add much
All CF options (Happ is nice but COF).. I know attaching Myers etc..etc.. but Myers is only owed like $8mil by the deadline (including the $1mil buyout) so Pads aren’t going to attach a spec to move him..
drasco036
I love Happ and even I wouldn’t make that move (from padres pov).
Now if the if there are some additional pieces in play then maybe… but as the trade that was purposed, the cubs would jump all over it but the padres would be foolish to make it
Henry Silvestre
Could a Contreras + Happ + Efross(normally indiv return is greater but AJP is creative) for Myers + Campusano + Hassell III + Lamet for example work??? Hmmm I’d be tempted (as Padre fan) if I believed I had a shot at resigning Contreras in the offseason..
drasco036
If I’m jed hoyer I would make that trade in a heart beat. If I’m aj preller I’m updating my resume because if I make that trade and do not make it to the World Series I’m out of a job.
