Per these chats and rumors, I don’t see the Cubs moving Happ for anything less than a near ml ready top prospect. He’s playing great defense and seems to have figured out both sides of the plate. Finally playing like the player they thought he was going to be and he’s still young. I could see the Cubs attempting to extend vs trade.
I also do not see the Cubs making a serious push for a top short stop…. Not giving how things are currently going (although Thompson and Steele look good) Davis’s injury is a set back (as is his k rate) and breaking news Hoerner has been the best defensive short stop In baseball.
VonPurpleHayes
Sorry my friend. Happ is getting moved for a lot less.
drasco036
No. He wont. Happ has another year of control and is having his best season of his career. The Cubs are not dealing him for anything less than a top prospect.
VonPurpleHayes
We’ll see in a bit. I mean it’s smart for the Cubs to sell high, and I think they’ll get a decent return. But I also think it’s just 1 season.
drasco036
Happ has shown flashes of being an mvp candidate in the past, it’s just been short lived and his numbers against south paws has always drug him down.
This season, his splits from the left side are pretty much on par with his career numbers, a slight decrease in slugging but he is absolutely murdering it from the right… I actually think this bodes well for his future vs this season being a one year fluke. Contrarily I think Happ continues to progress into that 25 home run 80 rbi bat the Cubs thought he would be.
JeffreyChungus
The Cubs would move Happ for a barbecue bacon burger
Gwynning
Ha-Seong Kim would like a word… half as many Es as Hoerner. (6 & 3)
Jean Matrac
Number of E’s is not a good determinant of better defense. Statcast says Hoerner is best so far this season, with 9 OAA. Kim is ranked 9th with 4 OAA. Fangraphs likes Hoerner’s D better as well, and rates him at 8 DRS, with Kim at 2 DRS.
Granted 2022 is still a small sample for defensive metrics, but so far Hoerner is way ahead. Second place is 4 guys tied with 5 OAA each.
drasco036
And a quarter of the DRS….
Holy Cow!
What would a Happ extension look like? He’s being paid $6.875 million, is having an All-Star caliber year, and has one more year thru the arb process. How does 4 years, $50 million sound?
drasco036
Extensions wise, I would think 4/60 on top of his last arbitration year at maybe 10 million. Given his high upside but inconsistent performance until this point I think that would be fair for both sides

Joe Musgrove and Wil Myers to the Mets for Matthew Allan and Alex Ramirez who hangs up first?
DarkSide830
Bro, SD isn’t trading Musgrove.
Deleted Userr
That you A. J. ?
DarkSide830
Do you think I need to be AJ to know that? SD isn’t selling, and if they are, they probably aren’t packaging Myers as a salary dump in a deadline deal.
Deleted Userr
Trading Musgrove doesn’t exactly mean they are selling.
VonPurpleHayes
They’re a legit contender. Why in the world would they trade Musgrove?
Deleted Userr
@VonPurpleHayes For the same reason the Guardians traded Trevor Bauer, Corey Kluber and Mike Clevinger despite being a “legit contender.”
Henry Silvestre
Right …the guy has a SDP tattoo..(since he was 18) he aint being traded and he is resigning
Deleted Userr
Trading him doesn’t mean they can’t re-sign him. See Chapman, A. and Familia, J. If he wants to play for the Padres so bad then that should be easy for them…
myaccount2
Why would they trade their best pitcher in a season they’re trying to win a World Series to one of two teams who are their biggest competition? Makes zero sense.
VonPurpleHayes
@myaccount2 I literally thought I was going insane until you stated this. In what world would a WS contender trade their best pitcher? How is this even a suggestion?
Gwynning
Harambe marches to the beat of his own low Savannah grassland drum. He’s been getting eviscerated for this proposal on Padre boards so maybe he was looking for validation amongst other team’s fans? Whatever the case, nobody is proposing this trade irl.
Deleted Userr
@myaccount2 For the same reason the Guardians traded Trevor Bauer in the middle of a season where they were trying to win a WS and then Mike Clevinger a year after that.
Deleted Userr
@Gwynning Actually I’m making a point here.
Deleted Userr
@VonPurpleHayes You don’t seem to get all bent out of shape when people suggest the Yankees trading Aaron Judge and say that the Yankees “Can’t just lose him for nothing.” And the Yankees are way more likely to win a title this year than the Padres…
jimthegoat
@harambe the Yankees aren’t trading Judge.
VonPurpleHayes
I would respond the same way. It would be insane for the Yanks to trade Judge when they’re competing.
myaccount2
@harambe- That’s apples to oranges.
Francona was fed up with Bauer and deemed him a negative clubhouse presence, plus they desperately needed an impact bat, getting Puig in return. Bieber and Clevinger were outperforming him and Plesac had a nearly identical ERA at the time of the move.
With regards to Clevinger, he had been suspended most of the season for a COVID violation. Cleveland saw Bieber, Plesac, Carrasco, and McKenzie have absolutely stellar seasons in his absence, making Clevinger expendable, as well. He was their 4th or 5th best pitcher that season, not their ace.
Musgrove is far and away SD’s best pitcher and possibly the Cy Young frontrunner. It makes way more sense to trade Snell (underperformance), N. Martinez (lesser track record) or Clevinger (injury risk) than Musgrove, Darvish, or even Manaea.
Henry Silvestre
I can see Padres selling SNELL… especially if as rumored they are in on Luis Castillo..as well as a bat or 2..Snell has value on his own and allows us breathing room on CBT to make 2 or 3 adds… and it also saves us $$ towards 2023 to help with resignings of Musgrove and others…
Snell and Lamet I would say most likely to move .. for CBT purposes.. if we want to add Bats/P without going over CBT
Deleted Userr
Why would they trade Snell just to trade for another starter? That just sounds like a weird lateral move that doesn’t actually make the team better.
drasco036
Because Snell is rocking an ERA over 5 (FIP suggest he’s pitched much better). Given AJs long list of successful trades, he will probably trade Snell and he will go on to have an epic 2015 Jake Arrieta second half run while whoever he trades for blows out his elbow during his first start in San Diego.
Deleted Userr
You answered your own question. His peripherals say he’s pitched better.
myaccount2
Okay, Harambe. Yet you think they’d trade Musgrove. Lol
Deleted Userr
I don’t think it will happen, just a stupid trade proposal I threw out there because I knew both teams’ fans would hate it. And I didn’t suggest they turn around and trade for a different rental starter after trading Musgrove, which is basically what Henry just did as Snell and Castillo have the same club control remaining.
Samuel
LOL
Snell is owed a prorated $12m this year, and $16.6M in 2023….and he’s pitching poorly…and Scott Boras is his agent…….
Don’t see a big demand out there for him short of the Padres forking out $14-16m to get another team to take him.
drasco036
Snells FIP is pretty solid so there is a chance some team would be interested in him… Padres wouldn’t get much in return outside of salary relief however.
If the Padres were to DFA Snell, he wouldn’t make it out of the division unclaimed.
VonPurpleHayes
Snells FIP is meaningless. The guy cannot touch the strikezone this year.
Henry Silvestre
He is striking out 11.2/9 innings.. one or 2 starts like his last 2 (Sans inning following Harper hbp) and he would be up there with any SP available at the deadline..the fact that he is controlled at a very reasonable $16mil for 2023 is even more valuable… if I am Pads I make a trade to Toronto for Ricky Tiedemann + Luiz Meza… 2 teen lotto tickets (non 40/26 so it helps SDP with roster flex soon needed)..
Then can go get Castillo (making a lot less in 2023) and a BAT .. with added specs and $$ Flex AJP can put together a monster package for Reynolds (headliner by Hassell III + Campusano)…or pivot to rental Contreras /Mancini/Bell types at lower spec cost
Deleted Userr
@drasco The Padres can’t trade Snell unless they get Luis Patiño and Cole Wilcox back (or something similar)
Deleted Userr
@Henry Rather just keep Snell
Samuel
“…. if I am Pads I make a trade to Toronto for Ricky Tiedemann + Luiz Meza… 2 teen lotto tickets (non 40/26 so it helps SDP with roster flex soon needed)..
Then can go get Castillo (making a lot less in 2023)”
Henry;
By your logic, it I’m the Jays I call the Reds about taking “Ricky Tiedemann + Luiz Meza… 2 teen lotto tickets” for “Castillo (making a lot less in 2023)”…..although “[Snell] is controlled at a very reasonable $16mil for 2023”.
Why don’t the Jays just get Castillo – who you think is a better pitcher making a lower salary and under control for the same amount of time?
LOL
LouWhitakerHOF
ROS value on a guy like Jon Berti? (Fantasy baseball).
Thanks
