The Marlins made a number of roster moves today, including moving All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the 60-day injured list. Anthony Bender and Cody Poteet were also moved to the 60-day injured list. Those moves cleared 40-man roster spots for Willians Astudillo, Jeff Brigham, and Huascar Brazoban, who were all added to the active roster. To create those spots on the active roster, Brian Anderson was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain, while Max Meyer and Tommy Nance were both placed on the 15-day injured list, per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald (via Twitter).
The Chisolm move is the most noteworthy (if expected) move of the bunch. The All-Star was recently diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back. The Marlins hope he can return by the end of the season, though that’s definitely in doubt.
It’s equally disappointing to see Meyer make a quick trip to the injured list after just two big league starts. The 23-year-old surrendered five earned runs in seven innings while striking out six and walking two.
Nance, a 31-year-old reliever, joins Meyer on the injured list. The former Cub has a 5.76 ERA/3.28 FIP in 19 outings covering 25 innings this season for the Marlins. The power righty misses a fair amount of bats, but struggled at times with his command. For the year, he has struck out a robust 29.9 percent of opponents, but he has also walked 11.1 percent of opposing hitters, a number that needs to come down in order for him to become an effective late-inning arm.
Brazoban made his Major League debut today, throwing an arsenal based around a sinker that neared 98 mph on average. The 32-year-old Dominican was playing in the independent league last season. Brigham, 30, has made 37 appearances for the Marlins over the past three seasons, posting a 5.01 ERA/5.32 FIP across 55 2/3 innings. Astudillo has stepped to the plate 38 times for the Marlins this season, slashing .270/.289/.351.
LATORTUGA
Did a great job out of the bullpen tonight. Should be our Closer now.
Fingers crossed that Meyers does not need Tommy John surgery!
Did they move him thru the system too quickly? True, valuable now, but more so for the future?
No, his call up was merited months ago. His arm has just been giving him issues for a month now
@BigSmoke; makes sense. If management thinks he’s, he’s ready. I asked because it looks like he’s had only about 1.5 yrs of minor league action. Os fan here. We’ve had Hall and Rodriguez in the system since 17/18 and they still haven’t gotten the call.
Latortuga gonna bring energy to the Clubhouse
lol Marlins, what a sad franchise
@You Can Put It In The Books (formerly known as @MetsFan22)
lol, What a sad poster.
I’d rather have Leblanc, Lewin, and Encarnacion supply that energy tbh
Brazoban getting ready to make that MLB debut at age 32, nice.
Usually I say that you can’t build a winner through free agency but this is a team, if there ever was one, that should be big buyers this off season. And no, I don’t mean one or two ill advised mega deals, I mean a large amount of smart spending, spread out where it’s needed.
That’s the dream for most teams, but executing that plan is very difficult.
I agree. They have so much pitching its unbelievable. Might need to trade some of that pitching for some bats (Soler and Garcia was a mistake). If they had any offense they would be pretty good.
@Cosmo2
You’re right. Sadly though, somehow the Marlins thought signing 2 corner OFs when we only needed 1, not acquiring a legit Closer when we needed one, not addressing the CF situation, etc. seemed to be the Front Office’s plan last offseason to become a playoff team. That and, of course, Jeter thinking that Castellanos was going to fill all of our holes. At least some of the leadership pieces are gone, so now it’s all on Kim Ng to make the decisions this offseason. We’ll see how it turns out because her time has had mixed results, but we know Jeter’s regime was doing things as a committee instead of allowing Ng to have free reign to make the moves she believes in with only needing ownership approval instead of having to get the committee votes from Jeter and Denbo (both now gone) and others for pre-approval before checking with ownership.
If she doesn’t correct the roster this offseason, it’s safe to say that she won’t make it to the 23-24 offseason.
Ng has been on the job under two years. And as you said, she’s just now getting the chance to make moves on her own. If they fire her before the end of the ’23 season, that’s ownership’s mistake.
Agreed. I think if the ownership lets her go, it’ll be after the 2023 season after giving her the chance to correct everything that was handled wrong the last two offseasons. If she goes into 2023 without acquiring a Closer, she has zero excuse after these two seasons of the inability to hold leads. Obviously whether she can correct the offense will also be a key factor as well.
With the Marlins SPs, they are very close to making a major leap in standings results if they correct the offense and the bullpen with a tweak in both areas. They’ll need to redistribute or go big in signing because a proven Closer isn’t exactly cheap and a legit middle-of-order bat isn’t cheap either. These are needed to bring it all together with what they already have.
SPs – Good. Just need to keep developing and stay healthy as a whole.
Bullpen – a bunch of middle relievers and a couple of potential set-up men, but need a Closer.
Lineup – They can be OK with Jazz, Sanchez, De La Cruz, and Fortes as the young pieces. Jury is out at the moment for Bleday since he just came up. We’re stuck with Garcia. We’ll see if Cooper makes it past the deadline and offseason. Decisions need to be made on Aguilar, Soler, Wendle, Berti, and Rojas. Need to give Lewin Diaz the opportunity again. Need to look for another 3B at this point because Anderson can’t stay healthy.
LMAO! Huascar Brazoban’s BR photo looks like he can see the catchers sign at home and the batters eye in center at the same time.
Deer in the headlights
Who cares ya suck
Free Lewin Diaz
Marlins need to move some of these veterans clogging up spots and move over to Lewin Diaz Jerar Encarnacion, and others. As bad as the vets have played, this is a year we actually want them traded so we can play the young guys.
The sad part in all this is that it was predictable. All these guys throughout their careers have been replacement level players. I’m not sure what they were hoping for, but Aguilar, Cooper, Sanchez, Garcia, Stallings all need to be cast aside to give the other guys opportunities. I’m OK with Soler because at least he still hits some dingers and his defense hasn’t been overly terrible as usual in left.
Time for a big trade! I want Lopez for the Twins so bad lol ain’t gonna happen
As a Marlins fan I would make that deal in a second. Marlins need to dangle him for a potential center fielder.
White Sox could use him too.
How about Pablo + Aguilar (can be useful for you guys) for Celestino + Wallner + low prospect (Festa)?
Who says no: Marlins or Twins?
Marlins say no…assuming they waste the time to before hanging up.
FYI…Mike Hill has not been the Marlins GM for a couple of years. Not so easy to bend the Marlins over the table like it was when Hill was here.
I actually think the Marlins consider a deal if Wallner is involved, but other pieces would have to be included, as Celestino has looked like nothing more than a fourth outfieder to this point. Aguilar can be traded for a bag of chips so he’s a none factor in the trade proposal one way or another.
