The Marlins have stumbled out of the All-Star Break, dropping three of their first five contests against below-.500 teams in the Rangers, Pirates and Reds. Paired with a three-game sweep at the hands of the division-rival Phillies to close out the season’s unofficial first half, Miami has dropped six of eight before tonight’s contest with Cincinnati.
Sitting 45-51 and 5 1/2 games out of the National League’s final Wild Card spot, the Marlins look increasingly unlikely to compete for a postseason berth. That’s particularly true with the news that the club’s best position player, Jazz Chisholm Jr., won’t return until September at the earliest due to a stress fracture in his back. In the face of those mounting odds, general manager Kim Ng and her staff are apparently willing to consider dealing notable players from the major league roster.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post tweeted this afternoon that the Fish are willing to listen to offers on everyone other than ace Sandy Alcantara. It’s hard to imagine Miami trading Chisholm since he’s controllable through 2026 and currently on the injured list, but it seems the bulk of the team could be available. Aside from Alcantara and Chisholm, perhaps no one else on the roster would draw more interest than starter Pablo López. While Miami hasn’t previously shown much appetite for dealing López, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report that the Marlins are now willing to hear offers on the 26-year-old righty. According to Jackson and Mish, the Fish aren’t actively shopping López, but they’re “no longer dismissing calls” from interested teams.
Assuming Ng and her staff are willing to seriously consider offers on López, he’d be one of the top options available for rotation-needy clubs. After missing most of the second half of last season due to a shoulder injury, he’s stayed healthy this year to take 20 starts. López owns a 3.03 ERA with an above-average 25.5% strikeout rate, a stingy 7.6% walk percentage and a solid 47.4% ground-ball rate. It’s the continuation of a few excellent years for the Venezuelan-born hurler, who has posted a sub-4.00 ERA with better than average strikeout and walk rates in each of the past three seasons.
López is only in his first season of arbitration-eligibility. He’s making an affordable $2.45MM salary, around $974K of which is still to be paid before the end of the season. That’s affordable enough for every club, and López comes with an additional two seasons of control before he can hit free agency after the 2024 campaign. He’s both cheaper and under a longer window of control than any of Luis Castillo, Tyler Mahle or Frankie Montas — the three hurlers who have generally been viewed as the top rotation trade candidates on the market.
There’s no need for Ng and her front office to force a deal given that extended window of club control, but they could view this as an opportunity to move him at the peak of his trade value. The Herald writes that the Marlins have not engaged López’s representatives at Excel Sports Management about a possible extension. Miami also has a fair bit of rotation depth and is looking for opportunities to invigorate an offense that carried a meager .238/.302/.376 line into play tonight.
Jackson and Mish write that the Marlins would like to add a left-handed power hitter for the 2023 lineup. Whether that’d come directly in a López deal is unclear — it’s rare for contenders to trade off their big league roster to address another area — but an openness to dealing away one of their top arms while searching for ways to add a controllable hitter suggests Ng and her staff aren’t approaching the deadline as a strict “buyer” or “seller.” Rather, it seems they’ll be one of a handful of teams — the Red Sox, Rangers, Angels and Orioles could be others — approaching the deadline more flexibly, recognizing that competing in 2022 is a longshot while still searching for ways to preemptively add to next year’s roster.
Of course, the rotation depth that could make the Marlins more amenable to parting with López has also been hit hard by injuries. Former top prospect Sixto Sánchez hasn’t thrown a major league pitch in two years. Jesús Luzardo and Edward Cabrera have been on the injured list for months, and rookie Max Meyer joined them over the weekend after leaving the second start of his MLB career with elbow discomfort.
In a worrisome development, Jackson and Mish report that Tommy John surgery could be on the table for Meyer. The team is still awaiting the results of a recent MRI before determining whether surgery will be required, but a UCL reconstruction would likely cost him all of the 2023 season. Miami is certainly hoping the electric 23-year-old will be able to avoid that fate; the club figures to provide an update on the righty’s status in the coming days.
Whether Meyer eventually goes under the knife or not, the injury serves as a reminder that even teams with a seeming surplus of starting pitching can see that depth thinned out rather quickly. Indeed, Miami’s rotation has largely been propelled by excellent seasons from Alcantara and López. 2021 breakout southpaw Trevor Rogers has had a disappointing follow-up campaign, and the back of the rotation has been hit by the aforementioned injuries along with a woeful showing from Elieser Hernández, who found himself demoted to the bullpen.
If Miami follows through on dealing some veterans, López wouldn’t be the only player on the roster to attract interest. MLBTR examined a few of the club’s other possible trade candidates last week. First baseman/designated hitter Garrett Cooper has a season and a half of remaining control and is hitting .279/.347/.426 on the year. He landed on the 10-day injured list due to a right wrist contusion this afternoon, but he indicated he expects to return when first eligible on August 3 (link via Christina De Nicola of MLB.com). He won’t play again before next Tuesday’s trade deadline, but injured players are able to be dealt, and it stands to reason other clubs will look past the injury if Cooper’s likely to return next week.
Brian Anderson and Jon Berti each looked like potential trade candidates, but they’re on the IL themselves. Anderson suffered a shoulder injury over the weekend, while Berti has yet to begin a rehab assignment after hurting his groin a little less than two weeks ago. They seem less likely than Cooper to be dealt given their longer-term recovery timelines.
Miami also has a handful of veteran relievers who could change hands. Right-hander Anthony Bass is controllable next season via $3MM club option, but he should draw interest with a 1.51 ERA through 41 2/3 innings on the year. Southpaws Steven Okert and Tanner Scott have missed plenty of bats and are controllable for multiple seasons beyond 2022, although each has struggled with his control. Richard Bleier is a more stable ground-ball specialist from the left side, while Dylan Floro is a righty with a broadly similar profile as Bleier.

No, he means he plays for the Cubs franchise. Have you noticed during the MLB draft that the newly drafted players ceremoniously don the jersey and cap of the major league team that drafted them, even though all of them are bound for the minor league system?

I would be tempted to do that as Lopez is the real deal and for the future. The problem is he has never pitched more than 111IP in a season and is over that already so is he gonna hold up down the stretch or in the playoffs? Lotta unknown territory for him…..I would much prefer Luis Castillo

Miguel Vargas or Michael Busch, Bobby Miller, and Andy Pages for Pablo Lopez.
Or if the Dodgers really want to get crazy…Gavin Lux straight up.

drtymike0509
Pablo Lopez the 2nd coming of Nolan Ryan, it seems if those are the offers. Trolley Dodgers aren’t trading Vargas if Turner has to hit the IL and Muncy is hurting/not hitting as well.
Shrutefarm
He’s numbers and peripherals are very similar to a “right handed” Julio Urias. That’s not going to come cheap. I’d hate to lose Lux or Vargas, but with Gonsolin coming back to earth and Buehler questionable, it’s nice to have another solid front line starter penciled in every 5th day and for the playoffs……for 2 1/2 more years.

Any competent offer is too much for the Marlins. They’ll insist on sending over as much value as possible for as little as possible, so I could see them maybe getting 1 guy, and that’s probably it. You have to remember the trade market works completely differently with them

The Yankees don’t need starting pitching.
They don’t even need depth at the position, they are a lock for the playoffs and only need four starters in the postseason why would they trade for an SP?
The only position the Yankees can improve at is catcher and/or DH (Soto) – or add a bullpen arm.
YourDreamGM
Do they have 4 starters better than Lopez? Would they rather have Lopez over giving Taillon a contract?

Yes, the Yankees do need starting pitching. The majority of the rotation will run up against innings limits before the season is over, and Severino is hurt.
They don’t need a catcher or a DH.
What team do you root for, Mr. Miller?
Mystery Team
He’s stuck in the off season thinking they need a catcher. The Yankees need bullpen help and an outfielder.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Seems that way. A starter, a reliever or two, and an outfielder, and their work is done. They could bring up Florial, who’s raking in Triple-A, but for some reason they seem not to believe in him, so adding an outfielder seems like very good idea.

Dbacks and Marlins hooked up on a similar type of deal Miami is looking for now, three years ago—Jazz Chisholm for Zac Gallen. It worked out for both teams. The garbage others are proposing here are no where near what the Fish want. None of those are feasible. Here is another Dbacks-Marlins trade scenario that does satisfy both team’s wants/needs.
Pablo Lopez for Seth Beer (left handed power hitter) and Jake McCarthy (two way CF Marlins want). Dbacks want pitching and have excess CF to trade.
Mjm117
Just like the 1st trade the Dbacks send Corbin Carroll for Lopez in a 1 for 1 deal.
Win/win for both squads

MLB Top 100 Commenter
Fish would laugh at Beer and McCarthy for Lopez. Not even close. Dbacks would laugh at giving up Carroll for Lopez. These two teams do not match well for a trade this time. Lopez for Jassoon Dominguez would worrk for both teams. Lopez for Brett Baty and Mark Vientos. Michael Busch and Miguel Vargas for Lopez and Brian Anderson. Nolan Gorman for Pablo Lopez. Or Jordan Walker for Pablo Lopez.
Mystery Team
Carroll is one of the best hitters in baseball never mind just AAA I think Arizona is gonna want him in their lineup at some point. Why move him for a pitcher when they’re not even close to contending yet?
MLB Top 100 Commenter
I agree that Arizona would not make that deal because they are not in contention either way. But Carroll is unproven against MLB pitching. I think he will be great. But there are other top prospects with great AA and AAA stats that I thought would be great and they flopped.

Dumb move by the Marlins, unless they get a haul. Not a dumpster fire haul like they got for Yelich. Just pony up and sign some decent F/A hitters. Move the damn fences in too. Like to 200 feet when Alcantra pitches.

Agree. Just spend SOME money. Maybe somebody who doesn’t want to get vaxxed. Florida will welcome them. lol
MarlinsFanBase
I agree. We’ve moved up too close to being in the range of potentially grabbing a playoff spot next year. No reason to trade Lopez. We need to move other pieces though to clear roster space for upgrades.
Appalachian_Outlaw
I can’t understand trading away a SP like Lopez, either. That sounds like they’re trying to rush their window, and there’s zero reason too. Short of Soto, who they’re not getting, I’m not sure which bat out there dramatically changes their odds this season?
As has already been said, keep Lopez unless you’re blown away and just spend some actual money this off-season on a bat.
cwsOverhaul
WSox have a lot of DH types to break that roster up a bit and aid Marlins offense. Eloy heading out and Lopez coming back as main pieces (replacement for Giolito FA after ’23)would be nice.

Would welcome people’s thoughts on this trade idea:
Mariners receive: Pablo Lopez and Garrett Cooper
Marlins receive: Noelvi Marte, Matt Brash, Levi Stoudt, Alberto Rodriguez, and Starlin Aguilar.
Prospect rankings are subjective of course, but this would be the M’s #1 (Marte), #5 (Stoudt), #6 (Rodriguez), and #13 (Aguilar), and a recent #3 who graduated in Brash.
I’m guessing people will say to include another in the top 4 so Ford, Hancock, or Arroyo and I’m guessing Miami would want Ford. I would try to go Hancock instead, although not sure who would be taken out. Maybe add another 20-30 ranked prospect since Cooper also has value.
Thoughts?
MarlinsFanBase
I doubt it. The Marlins are too close to playoff contention to just throw Lopez away for prospects. Most likely they’ll hold out for a young bat that is ready to put numbers now. Otherwise, it makes no sense to trade Lopez for parts that are more in line with a team rebuilding.
Chemo850
Close to playoff contention? Bruh, I get being a fan, but what world do you live in? They need like six hitters and at least two relievers.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
You may only need a 0.490 record to make the expanded playoffs.
myaccount2
@Marlins- That makes a lot of sense. I assume you don’t think Marte could be impactful next season then? I respect that opinion and understand it, but disagree. He has been on fire over the past month and a half and is knocking on the door for a promotion to AA. This is the exact same timeline Julio was on last season, and while not every prospect is of the same caliber as Julio or ready to make the jump as quickly, of course, Marte has long been thought to be a potential superstar in the making. I don’t think he would crack the opening day roster, but I think he could make his debut around a year from now.
I’m wondering if the Marlins could accept this, then flip guys like Stoudt and Rodriguez among other prospects for Laureano? Then they walk away with a potential franchise 3B/SS and get a win-now outfielder they’ve been connected to.
¡Killer Klowns From Outer Space!
MFB!
As a diehard Marlins fan myself I have to ask how you come to the conclusion that Noelvi Marte is “some prospect!”
He’s one of the top Prospects in the game and the Marlins pitching depth from Sandy, Rogers (looks terrible this season), Braxton, Meyer, Edward, Luzardo, Eury, Sixto, Eder, McCambley, Fulton, etc., they have what it takes to trade some of their depth to make them contenders as soon as next year.
My point being is if Seattle actually offered Marte AND Brash + other prospects for Pablo and Coops (who is always injured and also has horrible luck w injuries) you sign the paperwork and run.
Would be one of the wisest decisions the new Marlins front office has made other these Ozuna for Sandy + Gallen to Jazz.
BUT knowing the Marlins they’d take a too 500 prospects and 3 others guys who don’t get past ROK ball for Pablo and Aguilar or Coops lol.
And the Marlins have 25 year olds in the Minors ready so if they’re close to contending but their current lineup isn’t winning let along cannot hit, then they’re not close to contending if those prospects are sitting in the minors. I rather have .230 from a top prospect like Burdick and give him the chance than having Avisail going 1-4 only hitting when nobody is on base and GIDP every other AB and leaving 10 players on base the other 3 to 4 AB per game.
Done ranting, but as much as I absolutely Love Pablo, he and Rogers could get a huge haul. HUGE haul. They got to do something because aside from being atrocious and a cursed organization, they have bad luck. Meyer 5.2 IP into his high anticipated call up and now he’s probably out for 16 months. EC same thing, Luzardo same thing, Jazz finally brings some punch to Miami then we lose him to a fractured back and seems injury prone as the Marlins can’t have nice things. , etc. etc. etc.
myaccount2
@KillerKlowns- Sounds like a mutually beneficial trade to me then! I would prefer not to give up Marte but understand it would probably take Marte.
I’m a big fan of Cooper and love his statcast numbers. He could spell France occasionally, play LF or RF once in awhile, or DH. He wouldn’t have to play everyday and is a nice addition to the grand prize– Lopez. I’m bullish on Pablo and think he’s a top 15 SP in the MLB.
KamKid
That’s a good package though. Call Ben Cherington and send those prospects to the Pirates if Miami doesn’t want them and then get Bryan Reynolds in Miami. Sometimes it’s hard to line up on major league help for major league help but a rebuilding team could be a third party broker. I wonder if we might see more 3 team trades with a more blurred buyer/seller line.
YourDreamGM
Sounds like it could work. They might prefer their 2 or 3 instead of Marte. They could care less that Brash was formerly their 3rd best prospect, only what he is now. Same with Kelenic. Teams will only be interested in what they used to be if they believe they can unlock or fix something the Mariners couldn’t.
myaccount2
@DreamGM- I don’t think any of the prospect rankings matter, for what it’s worth. They very well could value Adam Macko the most of any pitching prospect, etc. That being said, Brash has been quite good since moving to the pen. Of course Kim Ng would want to believe the Marlins can make him a starter otherwise I think their interest in him would be minimal.

LOL not happening the package you are talking about is also the one being talked for soto and i think it is an overpay . marte had a rough start this year dragging him down but he is a legit top 10 prospect. if you take. ,marte out of your trade it still is too much. cooper is always hurt and mariners don’t need him he actually brings the value down for the mariners. they have france. sounds like you should go back to the drawing board
myaccount2
@Dmerr- Disagree big time, as you’re incorrect– that’s not even close to the package mentioned for Soto, which has been repeated by several industry people as likely along the lines of Kirby, Marte, Ford, Kelenic, and Hancock. Not only is this a lesser package than that but it’s also for a controllable pitcher and a controllable batter.
Now that I read your whole comment, I disagree with the whole thing. It’s fine if that’s your opinion but if you’re going to go at my opinion in such a way I’ll fight back. Not only are you wrong in your premise, your wrong in your evaluation. Cooper is in no way, shape, or form a net negative by any metric or statcast measurement and it’s an asinine thing to suggest. He’s not pigeon-holed to 1B like you’re suggesting either. He can rotate into DH or play corner OF spots here and there as he has his entire career. Santana has been clutch with the M’s (below average in every other situation) and Cooper is a significant upgrade over him offensively and defensively. Your conclusion that this offer without Marte is too much tells me that you don’t understand Lopez’s value, cannot evaluate prospect value, or likely both.
myaccount2

Between here and Reddit, you’re the only person to suggest it’s off in value; the others who disagree with my proposal simply think the Marlins will want an MLB-ready player(s) instead. So maybe you need to do some homework on all the players I suggested be involved.
marinersblue96
Seattle has no need for Cooper, Ty France is one of the best 1b in baseball under team control until 2026.. And they are not giving up that haul for Lopez. Marte top 20 talent(#11 by K Law), Lopez while a very good starting pitcher, slots in as maybe a #3/4 in the M’s rotation.
myaccount2
He would not slot in as a 4 in our rotation lol he has outperformed everyone in our rotation except Gilbert and has been more consistent over his career than Ray. Marco is toast with his 5 K/9 and should not be in the playoff rotation. Kirby is on an innings limit and not really tested. So you’re rolling with Ray, Gilbert, and Flexen come playoff time? Because I don’t want to see us do that. Lopez is a sub-3.75 pitcher who is pitching like a borderline ace this season and has more control than Castillo and Montas.
As for Cooper, no one is suggesting he supplant France. Teams win World Series titles with depth. Cooper can play 1B, DH, LF or RF to keep up with the rotation and let guys rest— especially KLew and Haniger as they come back from injury. He is much better than Santana (who has been very clutch but is hitting just .194 since being acquired). If the M’s have title aspirations they can’t roll with the offense as currently constructed and Santana should play 3 times or less a week and be a clutch bat off the bench. Cooper historically hits both LHP and RHP well.
marinersblue96
What are you talking about? Pablo would not be slated over Ray and probably not over Gonzo. Ray for the month prior to the All Star break was a putting up CY caliber numbers. You are not going to trade at top 15 overall prospect for for Lopez much less that package you suggested. The entire scenario you depicted is completely ridiculous.
Cooper is just as fragile as either Haniger or Lewis. Why would you want to trade for a player who has played a total of 70 games in the OF the last 3 years. He gives you no depth at the OF, would rather platoon MH and KL at DH and OF.
The last two weeks slash lines:
Cooper .085/.170/.234
Santana. 176/.283/.490
Santana also has 5 HR vs 3HR/ 11RBI vs 4
Your assumption that he is much better is completely wrong. And the fact Santana is a switch hitter as opposed to another RH bat, he is much more valuable than Cooper. I wouldn’t trade Santana straight up for Cooper.
myaccount2
That’s ridiculous. Not over Marco? It’s not even debatable—he would slot in over Marco. Do you not follow the league at large or are you just being a homer? Lopez has pitched like a solid 2 the prior two seasons and is pitching like a borderline ace with metrics to back that up this season. Marco is a 4 ERA, 5 K/9 pitcher who belongs as a number 4. He has been aided by good defense. Look at his xERA, FIP, and xFIP. As for Ray, Lopez’s career has been much more consistent than Ray’s but if you want to put Ray in over him because of his pure stuff, fine, I won’t argue it too strongly.
I don’t care about Cooper’s small sample size when he’s been good as a whole on the year and over the past few years. Santana on the other hand hasn’t been good in like 3 seasons so his small sample size is indicative of a bigger picture.
Cooper’s career splits are nearly identical against RHP and LHP, so that’s wrong. He doesn’t need to be platooned or pinch hit for against RHP. It’s clear you did no research into these players before making these conclusions. Also, big LOL for saying you won’t trade a bad offensive player who should be a DH only for a player who was an all star this season.
marinersblue96
What’s ridiculous is your idea of an Ace, which Lopez does not come close to resembling. He’s a solid #3. The trade package you laid out for him and the “ALL STAR” injury riddled 1B/DH is absolutely preposterous. Jim Bowden said today M’s could likely land Lopez for Kelenic straight up. Keep your day job because prognosticating baseball trades is not your thing.
Chemo850
I dont think he’s an ace either, but you’re nuts if you agree with Jim on that assessment. There’s a reason he’s no longer in baseball making these dumb trades in real life. Kelenic can be had for a bucket of balls if we’re being honest.
myaccount2
Gotta agree with chemo on this one. If that’s what Bowden said, that’s absurd. I mean, they have no reason to deal him. Why would they settle for a single player who is badly underperforming?
Also, I really wasn’t far off on my prediction for what it would take to land Castillo (Marte, Alberto Rodriguez, Adam Macko, and a lotto ticket) and we actually gave up more than my prediction, so I think I’ll keep prognosticating, especially since you seem to be one of two out of 20 or so replies between here and Reddit that thought this was entirely unreasonable. Sure, some said it’s an overpay–which you have to do to get a borderline ace/solid #2 (I’m ignoring you calling him a 3, that’s just disrespectful) and some Marlins fans said it would take MLB-ready talent, but on the whole, nobody criticized this as much as you.
Also, Carlos Santana is absolutely atrocious. I can’t believe you suggested just five days ago that you wouldn’t trade a .177/.299/.367 hitter, -0.4 WAA, 0.0 WAR (literally replacement level) for literally anyone else even if that player is “injury-riddled.”
If prognostication isn’t my day job, player evaluation certainly isn’t yours. Lol
marinersblue96
Don’t know where you are getting your numbers from but over the last 30 days:
Santana .7 WAR overall
AB97 R13 H19 HR6 RBI16 BB15 SO18 .196 /.304/.412
Cooper .9 WAR overall
AB105 R7 H23 HR3 RBI12 BB9 SO34 .219 /282/.362
Cooper has a slightly better batting average with nearly double the strikeouts and Santana has better power numbers and walks. Also Santana is a much better 1b.
Perez is a #3 it is not disrespectful it is a fact.
marinersblue96
*Lopez- damn auto correct
myaccount2
I think we have to agree to disagree on all of this. That’s the thing about sports: there are no concretes and no one way of interpreting numbers, metrics, etc. so opinions can differ. I think this is a case where we would approach roster construction differently if we were GMs.
One thing I think we can agree on: Go Mariners. It should be a fun rest of the summer with this team, especially when Julio, Ty, and Mitch rejoin the lineup.

…to clarify, the Marlins should be looking to trade Aguilar, any bullpen arm with any actual value, anything they can possibly do to move Garcia and/or Soler who shouldnt have ever been signed, Elieser Hernandez a year later than they should have traded him, Stallings who should have never been traded for, and unfortunately even consider moving on from Miguel Rojas, and potentially even Joey Wendle, and they should look for potential bullpen arms for next year, and/or 1-2 corner bats, preferably on the infield
Otherwise, just stand pat for now so they dont do any more stupid things that put them more in a hole. If by the offseason there is slightly more clarity on certain arms, then maybe consider it with Lopez, although it makes more sense to try to extend him for a couple of years, and deal someone else in that scenario
They should bring up multiple players that should have been up earlier, and let them play/pitch out of the bullpen. They’ve finally started to do that the last few days, but there are several others as well

Wonder if there is a way to dump joey gallo in this trade ????
YourDreamGM
On the Marlins? The team that didn’t want to pay Marte half of what the Mets did.

Here’s an idea

Finally a matchup for angels and jo adell? Lol
CHS O'sFan
Marlins fans what do you think; Cedric Mullins for Pablo Lopez as the baseline of a deal? Mullins is a LHH and has one more year of control than Lopez and has good ability to hit 1/2 in a lineup. Os deal from OF depth to acquire a strong SP w/ control. O’s could add one of Norby/Vavra/Prieto to package if Mullins isn’t enough.
jim stem
Mullens or Bleday? League minimum wage for talented players for a team not competing financially, making token free agent moves to satisfy the media and fan base.
¡Killer Klowns From Outer Space!
I’d do Pablo for Mullins straight up but as a Marlins fan and based of their history they never get that good of value for anyone. That’s trading a bit piece for a big need. They don’t do that. I hope they prove me wrong.

What are the chances the marlins trade Soler and Lopez to the Braves? They always ask for insane prospects from us. Can remember who it was, but a few years ago they demanded Acuna for I believe JT, that was ultimately traded for pennies for what the Braves could have offered at the time.
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Jorge Soler for to Atlanta Ball Club for both Tyler Collins and Justin Dean.
bravesfan
I mean, that seems fair, if not too much for Soler considering his current performance. But not like Dean and collins are awesome or considered huge prospects. It’s Lopez id like more than Soler as Ian anderson has been pretty rough this year. I’m not sure we have the prospects to get him… idk. Collins, Dean, and Davidson for Lopez? Too little?

I truly believe that if the Marlins ever want to contend consistently, they need to rethink that stadium. It’s such a cavernous black hole to hitters that there is zero home field advantage.
Sure, pitcher numbers look great, but wins versus losses at home? What free agent hitter will ever want to sign there? How’s the Garcia productivity looking from Milwaukee to Miami?
It’s a shame because the Marlins system has talent, but you still have to outscore your opponent.

The main issue is they refuse to play with the roof open. The ball carries with the roof open and windows closed. They’ve done it slightly more since we finally got rid of Loria, but still not as much as it should be for the extra $250 million and several years trying to get a retractable roof over a dome

Cardinals get Pablo Lopez
Marlins get Juan Yepez, Micheal McGreevey and Moises Gomez
mils100
I dont like this logic at all. I mean, trade Lopez for a bat and then next year trade a bat for pitching and just keep circling 75 wins. This is just not a playoff team this year. Miami just needs to actually spend some money. Honestly, a couple of league average hitters would help this team so much. I know they dont draw well but Miami is no small market, they need to spend a buck.
n2thecards
@tbone, I think the Cards line up with the Marlins on this one also. Nolan Gorman could slide back to 3rd in Miami and then maybe Moises Gomez or similar prospect in the Memphis outfield. Not that I want to see Gorman leave but I know he’s a good hitter with years of team control.
aTouchOfSarcasm
Or he’s the next Patrick WIsdom. Which is also one of the reasons I have no problem trading him. St. Louis fans are pretty bad about over hyping our prospects, and it’s been that way for a while. Growing up I though I’d see Jim Lindeman and Mike Laga blasting HR all over Busch. (Incidentally, Laga is the only guy to hit a ball out of old Busch. Granted it was foul….) Point is, Cards need pitching a lot more than they need Gorman’s part time power. Soto of course is a different case.
n2thecards
Agreed. I think Donovan or Sosa could be at 2B if Edman is comfortable with SS. If not, flip them around. The point is that Gorman and Yepez or Gomez would be dealt from abundance to address the SP need.
aTouchOfSarcasm
DeJong isn’t having a terrible run at AAA either. He’s still only 28, maybe he’ll figure it out still.

To the Twins for Max Kepler
Bravesfan309
have no idea why marlins would want to deal him. the most sought after commodity in baseball is SP. would love the braves to get him tho.

Super curious name, twins, Red Sox, Yankees

Hope one of my rival teams trades for him:
2018-09-01 placed on 60-day DL with strained right shoulder (out for season)
2019-06-19 placed on 10-day IL with strained right shoulder
2021-07-17 placed on 10-day IL with strained rotator cuff in right shoulder
2021-09-17 transferred to 60-day IL with strained rotator cuff in right shoulder

@georgebell
I imagine the FO conversation with Pablo’s representatives was along the lines of, if Pablo can pitch the whole season, we’ll talk extension.
This is Pablo’s season to prove he can stay healthy. So far so good, but we’ve a long way to go.
titanic struggle
If his last name was Cruz and he could sing…I’d be all in..
Habeto
Even though I’d think about that trade with the Mariners, the whole point is:
If the Marlins really want to contend next year, they MUST keep Pablo. There is no other reliable arm in that rotation to go a whole season… Talented arms, yes. More than 20 starts per season? None.
Keep Pablo and get rid of Aguilar and find someone to trade Soler. The Fish have Lewin Díaz as that LH bat they say they need.
MarlinsFan702
Pablo for Soto tomorrow then have Soto play 4 games flip him to the Dodgers or Yanks for half their teams
ohyeadam
Larnach(producing rookie), Steer, Wallner(both tearing up AAA), and SWR(Twins best pitching prospect) all guys that can break the roster after camp next year. Twins have a roster full of controllable offense and the Marlins have a roster full of controllable pitching. They’re natural partners
WrongM
Absolutely – if the Marlins are looking for a left-handed bat, Larnach plus secondary pieces makes a ton of sense.
Even Kirilloff would work too, although I imagine that of the two, the Twins would prioritize holding on to him more than Larnach – but if Kirilloff is what gets the deal done and López’ health is clean, I would do it.
joefleury
You heard it here first. Twins trading Max Kepler, Josh Winder, Jose Miranda, and Austin Martin for Lopez.
Winder would give the Marlins depth with upside. Kepler is a great defender with some pop on a team friendly contract. Miranda also has high upside and team control with versatility. Austin Marin is a high upside hitting prospect.
Twins get an ace they need to hold down the rotation and make space for Sano at 1st or keep All Star Arraez in the lineup while moving Kiriloff to right field.
J to the G
Whoa. This would be an offer for Alcantra, not Lopez. I’d think they’d try Larnach, Winder, and Martin for Lopez. If they add a guy like Bass, I’d even throw in Wallner.
Jay B.
Blue Jays should go after Lopez and Bass and start with adding Biggio a catcher and one of there higher ranked infield prospects and pitcher prospect.
DocBB
Pablo Lopez is very good but he is already over his highest IP of his career. I’d be careful with him as he could break down towards the end of the year and in the playoffs. I would stick to plan A and Luis Casstillo.
hiflew
This is the type of guy I’d like to see the Rockies trade CJ Cron for. I could see some type of package deal there with a couple of odds and ends added to both sides. Maybe one of the Rockies young OFs and maybe a reliever from the Marlins.
It would also enable the Rockies to trade Chad Kuhl to a contender for a prospect or two before everyone realizes he kind of sucks.
GarryHarris
After the Tigers front office, is the Marlins’ front office the most ideal trade partner? I’m confident that neither front office will ever get value from a trade much less win one.
slider32
Although there are some good pitcihers available none are a sure thing like Scherzer was last year. Interested to see if the Marlins D-Backs, and Guardians move anybody before the deadline, or are they just seeing their true value.
Yankee Mike
The Yankees should offer Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar and Estevan Florial for Lopez
