Yankees righty Luis Severino left tonight’s start against the Reds early. After allowing four runs through two innings, he came out for his warm-up pitchers heading into the top of the third. After a few tosses, Severino departed the game. The team later announced he’s dealing with tightness in his throwing shoulder.
Severino will head for an MRI tomorrow, at which point the club will surely provide more information. It’s at least a moderately alarming scenario for New York, as he’d been working with slightly diminished velocity through the first couple frames. Severino has averaged 96.1 MPH on his four-seam this season, but Jack Curry of the YES Network was among those to note (on Twitter) he’d been sitting in the 93-94 MPH range early in his start. Severino did top 96 on a couple occasions tonight, but he was clearly hampered physically to some extent.
The 28-year-old is shouldering a significant workload, having tossed 86 innings through 16 starts. That’s on the heels of three straight injury-limited campaigns, as he combined for just 18 MLB frames between 2019-21. After his 2019 season was cut short by lat and shoulder troubles, he underwent Tommy John surgery in February 2020. The rehab and subsequent setbacks due to groin and shoulder problems kept him off the Yankee Stadium mound until last September.
There’s not yet indication Severino’s dealing with anything serious this time around, but the Yankees figure to be cautious with his workload in any event given his year-over-year buildup. New York has had remarkably good rotation health, with the top five of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jameson Taillon, Jordan Montgomery and Severino starting 84 of the team’s 88 games. They’ve virtually never needed to dip into their depth options, one of myriad reasons they own MLB’s best record at 61-26 entering play tonight.

Whoa!!! This is bad/really bad news.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I’m not too worried until the MRI results come back. It’s not unexpected after such a long layoff from TJ surgery. I’d say let him use the AS break to take a breather. The team still has ginormous lead in rhe AL East. Severino on an innings count anyway.

He looked like he had a case of getting-hit-itis
josiahdd
Good one. Because injuries never lead to decreased velocity and poor pitch movement, which never lead to getting hit.
Way more likely Severino thought: “I gave up a HR. I’ll just start throwing slower with horrible movement and location so I can get out of here early.”
positively_broad_st
Gave up 3 HRs in a row today…

How much did the Reds want for Castillo again?
jbryant0693
Price went up again, inflation.

They will take Volpe.
Captain Judge99
@Javia135- it doesn’t really matter what the Reds want. Castillo isn’t coming to the Yankees regardless.
Javia135
Mr. Cashman? Is that you? What are you doing here?
Captain Judge99
@Javia135- no Ca$hman is sleeping again, so are your’re Friars going to trade a 15-30 prospect for Mr. Gallo? Is he even worth that at this point? Lol

Duck duck duck this last week has been awful. This is the true yankee team our pitchers were pitchers were having carrer years unfortunately they are back to normal. Now Severino hurt will be ducked up and season over.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Remind me to never invite you to any of my parties.
josiahdd
The true team? Cole owned 8 of 9 batters and Yankees lost a lead. Next 2 losses the starters also left with leads and lost those late as well. It’s hardly an implosion, and certainly not the pitching just disappearing. No one will have a sub 0.50 ERA for a season.

It’s Waldichuk time!
Captain Judge99
@top jimmy- I’m sure that Waldichuk, Sears, Pereira, Vargas, and Vasquez have already been offered to Cincinnati for Castillo already.
Wrian Washman
Taillon also hasn’t looked like himself lately and I wonder if he’s next on the I.L. Cortes might have been best suited for the bullpen after all and Monty while solid is a #3 at best. It’s been a great run but the pitching has been playing as expected pre-season. The Yankees are doing too well at this point to plug the holes with Keller and Quintana. Expect Waldichuck and Wes to head to Cincy because if there’s ever a year to go for it seriously it’s now while they’re still considered the best team since ’98.

There are just not enough articles or comment sections on mlbtr to complain about Al Avila and Chris Illich.
Tiger fans need a minimum number of article each and everyday.and that minimum should be the.maximum.
Get with it guys.
Ronk325
Luis Castillo is currently sitting in the opposing dugout. Get on the phone with the Reds and don’t let him leave New York
Captain Judge99
@Ronk325- just talking about that with a friend today. It would be funny for Castillo to pitch against the Yankees tomorrow, and then be traded during the game, and then walk over to the Yankee dugout to join his new team. It’s possible. Lol
Ronk325
That would be a wild scenario. I was mostly joking about the last part, especially because he’s unlikely to be traded this early
Captain Judge99
@Ronk325- my guess is Castillo is going to La-La Land unfortunately, not to the Bronx. If he comes to the Yankees he’s going to have to get a haircut and get a shave. It’s possible he will need his own stylist here in NY.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Yes. But it’s more likely he’ll get pulled from starting if there is an imminent trade. At least give the guy a chance to say his goodbyes and hang out one last time.
Captain Judge99
@YankeesBleacherCreature- No I doubt that though. It will definitely be a showcase for the Reds to get the biggest package possible. Yes, apparently that’s what’s truly important to them. It’s always about the size of the return.
titanic struggle
As s Reds fan, I can tell you that with Castillo, it’s more about quality than quantity…
Mookie Mantle
Uh oh.Better call SD and ask about Snell or Darvish.Cant get too complacent here because…..the Orioles are coming!
yankees2016rebuild
Exactly we can add their payroll at this point we need an innings eater and snell might get that magic back he had with the Ray’s.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
I hate to say it, but the Yankees could be coming back down to earth. Regression to the mean. Nestor and Taillon looking tired. Now Sevvy. The lineup as well, without Judge’s humongous year, would they be where they are? That winning percentage was not sustainable…what if they are .500 the rest of the way ???
jbryant0693
.500 wins the division and loses to the Stros. Actually, every scenario ends that way.
yankees2016rebuild
Yes until we get a second ace every scenario in my head we lose to the Astros. They humiliated us at home
Poster formerly known as . . .
Humiliated? You mean the 4-game set at Yankee Stadium that the Yankees and Astros split 2-2 with the total scoring separated by a single run?
Captain Judge99
@Fink Ployed- oh my god, what are you an Stro’s fan now? How could anyone actually root for such a loser organization? The Astros should change they’re name to Ashamed.

The real Aaron Judge would’ve understood that I was saying the Yankees weren’t humiliated in a split in which the Astros scored only one more run.
For shame.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Way to hit the panic button. True to your namesake. A .500 record going forward still means 98 wins or a playoffs berth.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Well 99 wins bc they’ve just won AGAIN.

With Stanton and Rizzo.. judge is not hitting for 3 weeks.. and we’re still 14 games up
Mookie Mantle
Yanks will need to start making calls now.Im not super high on Castillo because he’s never pitched in AL.Frankie Montas,Snell or someone else who has arm attached I suppose.
Wrian Washman
I trust Castillo more than Montas, he’s faced enough DHs and I don’t see the ERA jumping drastically even in the AL East. Montas’ injury concerns me a little more.
Poster formerly known as . . .
The Oakland Coliseum has the most foul ground in baseball, which helps the pitcher when fouled-off pop-ups end up in gloves. Great American in Cincy is a launchpad. I’m tempted to think that Yankee Stadium might therefore be less daunting to Castillo. But, at the end of the day, I guess what it really comes down to is: who’s the better pitcher, and is he available? Castillo missed 36 days early this season with a shoulder injury.
Captain Judge99
@Fink Ployed- I think you might have something there. I was thinking the same thing in regards to the stadium’s. Montas throws harder then Castillo. But I feel Castillo is definitely the better pitcher. The real question is: who would win in a dog fight? Then that’s the pitcher to acquire.
tstats
Never pitching in the AL might give him the unfamiliarity boost for a few weeks
Poster formerly known as . . .
Yep. Advantage goes to the pitcher in that case.
AHH-Rox
Snell for Gallo and a marginal prospect? And separately Yanks trade for Benintendi?
jbryant0693
Gallo has negative trade value, guess (hope) that was a joke? If so, hahahahaha. Good one.
Wrian Washman
A bag of Frito Lays with a diet coke would be an overpay for Joey Gallo. An optimistic angle would be that SD accepts a top 20-30 in exchange for the entirety of Snell’s contract. I’m not sure if salary dumping is the Padres biggest priority right now though.
yankees2016rebuild
What would the Padres say to a CJ Abrahams snell and there pick of bad contract for gallo and a couple 10-20 range yankees prospects we eat all the money in all contracts.
Fg-3
Castillo needs to be a Yankee… no cost is too high now. It’s a necessity… it’s been proven that we still struggle with the big boys
Bright Side
Disagree, especially if Judge signs elsewhere. If that happens, the team will need to squeeze every bit of talent from the farm system.
Captain Judge99
@Fg-3- what are you crazy? Castillo needs the Yankees more than they need him. The Reds need God.
Bright Side
Sevy most likely pitched his last game as a Yankee. Shoulder injuries are career killers. He’ll be a FA at the end of the season. I don’t see the team picking up his option. That said it could have been worse. He wisely signed an extension when it was first brought to him, unlike Didi and Dellin.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Bright The Yankees hold a $15M team option on him for ’23 with a $2.75M buyout. So it’s a $12.25M decision. If he makes another 5+ starts with no regression, it’s an easy no-brainer. In the worst case scenario where he needs to be shut down this year, I’m leaning towards the Yankees picking up the option anyway. Last season, they took an $11M chance on Kluber who had far more question marks.
kc38
This is so unsurprisingly comical to me lol. Every single fan saw this coming from a mile away EXCEPT Yankees fans and their front office. They’ve run their starting pitchers ragged when they know how injury prone they are. Cortes showing signs of drop off, tailion showing signs of drop off, severino already hurt, Holmes begging his decline. The Yankees were once unbeatable this season… but now they are not a scary team to face whatsoever. Rays have the most players on the IL by far and will only get healthier and healthier. Going to be a wild finish
DionJameskilledmyparakeet
A very classy post finding Severino’s injury comical and calling out the Yankees organization and fans. Try not being a jackass next time.
kc38
Oh my gosh stop with your sympathy bull crap, you didn’t cry for him when they pulled him from the game. Yeah it’s sucks for him getting him but it’s comical that the team is that oblivious that they didn’t take measures ahead of time to try and prevent it. Notice the rays starting to pull their aces earlier and earlier in the game to try and prevent injuries and save them for the latter part of the year. The Yankees have just been absolutely wearing out their starting pitchers this year and yeah it’s been concerning for their guys because of the huge injury risk. So yes I do feel bad for sevy but it’s comical at the same time because the Yankees are run horribly when it comes to injury
Captain Judge99
@kc38- the Yankees and they’re fans are fine. Not so sure about you though? Getting hurt is comical now? Smh

His velocity clearly dipped. Looked like he couldn’t get his full extension after pitches. It was interesting that Boone was clearly concerned and Severino convinced him he was OK. Next inning he decided to pull himself. You always hope these guys are honest. You just wonder if he might have made things worse pitching that last inning.
whyhayzee
I hate what teams like the Yankees do to their pitchers. Their culture is so obsessed with winning during the regular season that they burn out their most effective pitchers. There’s absolutely no planning for the postseason. Hoping that Severino is not badly injured. But this is going to happen with Taillon and Cortes as well. They are being burned at both ends. Cole is throwing over 100 pitches in some of his starts. Yes, he’s a horse, but they’re doing to him what the Red Sox used to do with Clemens. It won’t work. Teams that win championships often don’t have their aces lead the way, it’s their second and third guys and their bullpen that steps up. There are too many damn postseason games in modern baseball. It becomes last man standing. And that last man standing is not often the team with the best regular season record. I don’t really like it that way but that’s where we are now. No wonder pitchers are dropping. It’s a sad state of affairs no matter who it happens to anymore.
Wrian Washman
What exactly would you have them do different? Would you pull guys earlier when they’re pitching great and tax the bullpen even more? Do my eyes deceive me or did you just imply that a winning culture is problematic? It should actually be applauded that the Yankees have kept the staff this healthy halfway through the year.
whyhayzee
My philosophy is that a great team loses 60 games in a season. The less your effective pitchers throw in those games the better. I am NOT saying to lose on purpose! But use those games to give lesser pitchers opportunities to throw innings. Maybe some of those guys will turn out to be effective. In other words, manage your losses with the same skill that you manage your wins.

I think Sevy will be fine, Yanks hold him out until after the break. The back to back to back killed him mentally yesterday, he was done!
