The Angels have been without Mike Trout for a couple weeks. The three-time MVP went on the injured list on July 18 with rib cage inflammation, and while he’s technically now eligible to return, his timetable to get back on the field remains uncertain.
Yesterday, the team’s head trainer Mike Frostad addressed Trout’s injury with reporters (including Sam Blum of the Athletic and Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register). Frostad said Trout had been diagnosed with “a costovertebral dysfunction” in his back, which he called “a pretty rare condition.” The trainer added the situation was something the club “(has) to look at as — he has to manage it, not just through the rest of this season, but also through the rest of his career probably.”
Frostad’s note about the necessity to monitor the condition throughout Trout’s career was an impetus for understandable concern among the Angels fanbase, but the future Hall of Famer quickly reassured he’s not worried about the issue long-term. “I appreciate all the prayer requests, but my career isn’t over,” Trout half-jokingly told reporters about the public response to Frostad’s comments. Trout added he feels he’s made progress in his recovery over the past few days, and replied “of course, that’s my goal” when asked whether he expected to return to the field in 2022. He conceded he’ll need to “stay on top of the routine I do on a daily basis to prevent it from coming back,” to Frostad’s point about managing the condition, but expressed optimism it won’t be particularly problematic.
Trout’s hopefulness is certainly welcome news for Halos fans and the organization at large, but it seems he’s still set to be out of action for the near future. He’s yet to begin baseball activities after receiving a cortisone injection last week. Trout will see a back specialist this weekend, he told reporters, and hopes to receive clearance to ramp up his work beyond the cardio and core stability training he’s been doing.
The Angels lost Trout for the majority of last season. He played in 36 games before suffering a calf strain in May. While the club initially hoped he could return within two months, the injury lingered long enough they eventually shut him down for the season. Trout has returned to get into 79 games thus far in 2022, and he’s had a typically stellar year. Through 326 plate appearances, the ten-time All-Star is hitting .270/.368/.599 with 24 home runs. Among hitters with 300+ trips to the plate, only Yordan Álvarez, Paul Goldschmidt, Aaron Judge and Rafael Devers have a wRC+ higher than Trout’s 167 — a mark that indicates he’s been 67 percentage points better than the league average batter.
In a script all too familiar, Trout’s excellence hasn’t been enough to overcome the roster’s other flaws. The Halos enter play Thursday with a 42-56 record that’ll almost certainly lead to an eighth consecutive year without reaching the postseason. The club’s place in the standings figures to increase their caution in bringing Trout back, as it did last year.

Trade Ohtani so Trout doesn’t have to play the outfield every single day.
TheOpener
That issue is probably going to be forced at this point. Or maybe Angry Arte is so incompetent as an owner that he will just hold onto Ohtani and let him walk away for nothing (other than the Qualifying Offer compensation draft pick) after next season. Either way, difficult to imagine Anaheim making a serious attempt to keep Ohtani beyond his current contract, given the new Trout situation. And Ohtani in all likelihood has already left Anaheim mentally- so even if they wanted to keep him, it would be shocking if he re-signed with them.
BrianBrian
There might not even be a QO pick that year LMAO
TheOpener
Hahaha
prov356
Wow. That’s a lot of conjecture.
Michaelchavez22
I thought they got rid of that pick for declined QO?
TheOpener
Didn’t know that- even more comical if they truly got absolutely nothing when (not if, but when- assuming he isn’t traded first) Ohtani leaves after next season.

Don’t forget about Rendon needing test from the field too.

If they trade the only other good player they have why would trout wanna stay?
TheOpener
At this point, Trout it’s basically impossible to trade Trout- with the broken down body and the 31 years old age and the $37 million per year through 2030 and him not producing more than 4 WAR in a season since 2019 (including only playing at a 4-5 WAR pace in 2020, so the shorter season doesn’t matter). The only GM who might be stupid enough to take on the remainder of his contract is Cashman. Even if Anaheim offered Trout in exchange for the lowest rated prospect of any given organization, only an idiot would take on that contract- couldn’t even give him away at this point.

More like Trade Trout! He’s fakes out injuries during the seond half of the season every year. Haven’t you figured that out yet?

Fakes out? Every year? LOL

True. I saw him climb out of a black helicopter at Disneyland in the middle of the night to play frisbee with some government agents when he was supposedly injured. The agents wore dark glasses and had strange lizard-like features

Thought you might go with fish like vs. lizard like for the pun.

What sport you watching? Trout always gives 100%. Just a pity he plays for such a crap team.
dirkg
That very well may have to be the outcome. At some point Angel fans are going to realize that Rendon is the player that caused a necessary Ohtani trade. The Angels basically have $36M in yearly salary gone from their roster with little to nothing to show for it. If Ohtani does indeed pull around $40M, rounding out numbers, you’re basically looking at $113M for 3 players. With a franchise that hovers around $190M total payroll, that’s basically impossible to run a winning team unless the farm system is stocked with MLB ready talent (which it’s not).
MagicOriole
Rendon didn’t cause anything. This mess is on the owner and front office 100%
dirkg
I agree that Arte is a terrible owner who hamstrings his FO. Terrible. He was the one who was talked into the Rendon contract by Scott Boras. Rendon certainly can’t be blamed for someone dumb enough to sign him for that contract.
That being said, Rendon owns some culpability for giving the Angels next to nothing. He occupies almost 20% of the payroll.

The Angels owner intervening multiple times signing/extending josh hamilton, Rendon, and others over the years while always in a competitive stance never pulling back to retool cost Trout his career. I hope he switches teams next year lets see him in the post season.
Yanks2
Trout will retire an Angel most likely. He knew how bad the Angels have been almost every year and he still signed a mega deal. I don’t think he cares about being in the playoffs at this juncture
mlb1225
I mean, he was offered what at the time was the largest contract in MLB history where he would make over $35 million a year for 12 years straight. That’s enough money to keep his grandchildren’s grandchildren wealthy. Look at where he is now. He has a rare chronic back condition and hasn’t played more than 150 games since 2016. Life isn’t guarenteed, but baseball contracts are. Everyone who isn’t Scott Boras would have taken that deal, regardless of the team.
smd
I doubt that last sentence very much. When all is said and done, not making the playoffs and going to a WS will weigh heavily in his retirement. These guys make a ton of money, but they still want to win.
Yanks2
Why would Trout waste his career earnings on fast food when he can afford exquisite meals whenever he wants

Just because his wife dresses like trash, doesn’t mean he’s humble. I remember him, the day he was drafted as the only player in the studio. He’s not the same. This back condition is probably karma for how he treated his son when he hit a hallway homerun and bat flipped on him!

@anthony next time you report on rare injuries or conditions like costovertebral dysfunction, could you please let us readers know what the condition is in “layman” terms the majority of us here are not in the medical profession and most likely never heard of costovertebral dysfunction. other than that you do do a pretty good job on your articles and keep up the good work.

You may not have heard yet, but there’s this thing out there called google.
Give it a try.

If he’s not giving punctuation a try, he’s definitely not using google.

@bucsfan004 sorry if my post are not grammatically correct, i make my living building stuff not writing books, but you know what i’ll stop caring about my trade and making sure all the commercial buildings i work don’t pass codes just so i can work on my english skills and we’ll be unemployed, because in my trade no one give a (bleep) if you can write a textbook correct sentence
Play the Game
Spot on!
stymeedone
I didn’t think it would be so difficult to learn punctuation that you would have to quit your day job.
brodie-bruce
@stymeedone for someone that couldn’t grasp the rules of english when i was kid in school, what bleeping chance am i going to figure it out at 36. at this point in my life i’m worried about remembering building codes and learning things related to my trade to improve myself as a carpenter. last thing on my bleeping mind is if i used the right punctuation or if what i wrote was grammatically correct, because those things don’t keep me employed. what keeps me employed is knowing fire ratings, building codes, how to read a commercial blueprint, ect. so to answer your question yes it would be difficult to learn punctuation without quitting my day job because punctuation & grammar doesn’t mean bleep in my word what matters is quality and speed. i’ve yet to see a carpenter get fired because he didn’t use a comma in the right spot
Poster formerly known as . . .
First, brodie-bruce, thanks for the care you take to make your buildings safe. Like you said, that’s a hell of a lot more important than how you punctuate sentences on a message board.
Second, here’s a tip that I suspect a lot of web surfers might not be aware of. Depending on which browser you use, you can highlight any term on a page and right-click on the term and a menu box will open up giving you the option to search for the term.
If you use Google Chrome, the option reads: ‘search Google for “costovertebral dysfunction”‘ (or whatever term you highlight).
If you use Bing you get more options from the menu that opens up: ‘search the web for “costovertebral dysfunction”‘ or ‘search in sidebar for “costovertebral dysfunction.”‘ The latter is especially convenient because you can stay on the page you’re on and scroll through the search engine results in the sidebar that opens up in the right margin. If you click on one of the links, it’ll open that page in a new tab and the page you’re on will stay open with its own tab that you can return to when you’re finished checking out the other page.
BTW, I recommend a song by John Prine: “Grandpa Was a Carpenter.” I think you might dig it. Peace, bro.
P.S.
This website’s automatic punctuation can’t even do multiple quotation marks properly in a comment (it does some of them backasswards), so nobody’s perfect.
Bravesfan59
you ever heard of Google it’s real simple and easy to use takes less than 2 minutes to look it up
brodie-bruce
i know of google but why should i have to “google” the medical condition when i’m already here reading about why trout is injured. i’m not asking for the med book answers more of. this is condition x and it causes y and z. btw i’m not bashing the writer or anything just trying to give honest feedback.
Bill the Cat
I’m with you Brodie. Not sure why the previous comments were made about your post. Obviously they must just be jerks. Trolls. Whatever. They didn’t need to comment, I hope they feel better now lol.
brodie-bruce
@bill thanks i really wasn’t trying to be a d but offer constructive criticism, i know i can google costovertebral dysfunction but why should i have to a simple description of the condition in the article would of been fine. then again it seems like most are more concerned about my grammatical mistakes than context
Bill the Cat
bucsfan0004
If you spent less time replying to every snarky comment and looked up the medical condition, you’d have an extra few hours to play around with.

Yeah pretty ridiculous to have another article on Trout, list the condition but make readers stop reading, go to Google and look it up when he could put in the effort and summarize for the reader.
SWH*1972*
You should have capitalized “you” and included a question mark when you asked have you ever heard of Google? Try using Google it probably will show how to correctly write your reply. Maybe you can lookup costovertebral dysfunction while your online and let us know what it is.
bwmiller
I read about it, the T5 vertebrae is in the upper middle of your back between your shoulder blades. The nerves that are attached affect your lungs and heart, if there is damage to the vertabrae it can affect your cardiovascular system.
A costovertibral disfunction is related to the bone structure of the vertabrae and the ligaments that keep it stable around your spine. Your ribs are also attached to your thoracic vertabrae so when there is instability because of the bone itself or because of damage to the ligaments, the nerves can be irritated and inflamed. If you have ever felt sciatic nerve pain you know how disabilitating nerve pain can be.
No telling how badly the bone is degraded or how badly the ligaments in the vertabrae are damaged from the report, the term costovertibral disfunction is a broad term for any sort of malignment, I’ve had sciatic nerve pain in the past, spottedly but it went away for years and I walk five miles everyday. With Trout, likely best to really manage his diet and lose some weight, diet does wonders for inflammation. Hope he can play out his years. Get off the creatine and the junk food, eat vegetarian, eat more fish less beef and pork, but eat mostly vegetarian, cut out sugar, will reduce inflammation.
TheGoodsDude
Wow. That description doesnt sound like a baseball career is sustainable. But maybe its a cortisone shot the night before every game along with the lifestyle changes you mentioned.
bigstein09
Well a cortisone shot before every game would cause the bones in his back to die and collapse.

Bravesfan59
I said from the beginning when trout signed the contract, the Angels would never make the playoffs. just seems like teams like the angels and rangers and Padres will never learn and take lessons from the rays on how to make the playoffs year after year without paying someone 30 million a year. it’s a team sport not one player wins the games you can have ohtani, trout, and soto, and still not make playoffs. I rather have eight players making 5 million a year than one player making 40 whoever signs soto, won’t win the world series. whatever team gets hot at start of playoffs usually wins the world series look at my braves last year the playoffs are nothing but a crap shoot anyway everyone knows that
pinstripeblue
I generally agree with your point. I think I can see paying pitchers a lot (even though they’re more risky). For example, I’d pay a Bob Gibson, a Roger Clements, or a Steve Carlton in his prime $40M a year. Pitching controls the game. You keep your opponent from scoring more than two runs per game usually means your team wins.
Samuel
A starting pitcher goes once every 5 games.
Pitching 170-180 innings in a year is very good. 190-200 seldom happens.
A ML team pitches around 1,400 innings a year.
Do what the Rays, Guardians, Astros, and others with non-Dodgers / Yankees / Mets payroll budgets do – scout well in both drafting and acquiring pitchers, and work with them. Get 3 very good starters, 3 decent starters, along with a bullpen not built around a $16m a year closer, and you can assure your team will be in most games for a reasonable cost.
PhanaticDuck26
you act like the Rays approach is the norm, and other teams are just choosing not to follow it. In reality, it’s the exception to the rule. I wish the Phils could have done it the Rays way, too, instead of trying to spend their way to contention. But simply put, it’s just super difficult to do what they do each and every year, so I don’t think you can really throw 26 or so teams under the bus for not being able to accomplish a rare feat.
Appalachian_Outlaw
I know it’s trendy to point to the Rays as an example of cheap team building, but it’d be just as easy to point to the Pirates as a reason it doesn’t work. Paying 3 guys 40m doesn’t preclude you from winning, you just have to pay the correct 3 guys. That’s where it’s more about having a competent FO.
Chris Delgado
Sounds like what happened to David Wright at the tail end of his career.
brucenewton
He won’t be back this season is highly likely. All-timer status in jeopardy.
User 2976510776
The Angels communication sucks. Shouldn’t the GM or manager give the update and not trainer? The Dodgers or Yankees would never let a trainer give a major update and then the star player like a Mookie Betts or Judge then have to backtrack or downplay his comments.

I think they’re downplaying this. I think Trout is grateful he signed those two extensions on time for his body’s inevitable break down.
If he’s secretly done-ish his body broke down a few years before most guys’ do.
I do wonder if he resents not being on a club that was better assembled to compete for a world series or perennial post season appearances during his career.
Samuel
Having been raised in New Jersey and gone through winters there, I’d suggest Mr. Trout, his wife, and their child are happy living in a mansion in Southern California where he can drive to work in a reasonable period of time.
Am sure they have family and friends in the area, relationships with doctors, dentists, lawyers, schools, etc. and have no desire to pull up stakes and start a new life somewhere else.

Manfred will just change the rules so that
2 way players can dh for another position in the same game so in effect the angels would be allowed 2 dhs when ohtani pitches. Pitching and hitting for the second baseman shohei ohtani

This is what the two-way players do to other players. We once knew it but had forgotten over the years.
greatdaysports
Mickey Mantle had his bad knees. Trout will show class and live with this and do well.
Rsox
I have been saying for years that Trout was following the same path as Andruw Jones; come up at a young age and hit the ground running, Hall of Fame trajectory all through his 20’s and then the wheels come off at 30. The difference is the Braves lucked out and never paid him a big money deal for those great years, the Angels have a long way and a lot of money to go to hope that Trout miraculously turns back in to his former self. I do still think moving him to a corner would be beneficial to him in trying to stay healthy
TheOpener
The issue with the corner OF is that the best chance for him to stay in the lineup would be to limit ware and tare as much as possible- which means only being a DH. But then the issue there is that the most likely thing to cause aggravation of that injury in baseball is the motion of swinging a bat- so being a DH isn’t good either. They’re in a no win situation. And you probably won’t see him slide on the bases or in the field ever again- assuming he plays the field. And on top of that, he already stopped being a base stealer (he was a great one) years ago- trying to avoid re-injury definitely had to be a factor there. Total shell of 2012-2018. Expecting an average of 2-4 WAR of production going forward.
Rsox
Then you have the other elephant in the room in Shohei Ohtani. While the “two-way” tag sounds great on paper he has spent all of 8.1 innings in the OF (none this season) and has never started a game in the OF in the Major Leagues so DH isn’t really an option for Trout til at least 2024 assuming Ohtani leaves as a free agent or isn’t traded before then
TheOpener
True- and good point about Ohtani being a DH. As impressive as it is that he is both a pitcher and a hitter, it seems weak in a way that he doesn’t play a position. Not nearly as impressive as if he was a pitcher and an a position player (as long as he was at least average in the field). Another thing is that Ohtani has only had 2 good seasons as a pitcher and it’s unlikely he will be a long term (good) 2 way player. Wouldn’t want to sign him long term and just more reason he needs to be traded ASAP while his value/controllable time are at their highest- plus it’s obvious that he has no desire to stay in Anaheim anyway.
outinleftfield
Tell Trout to try awakenfloatlounge.com/. It will help his back tremendously.
SanDiegoSuperDissapointingPadres
As a Padres guy, I worry about this happening with Tatis. This season it’s his wrist. Last season it was his shoulder, which is a nagging injury and he choose not to get surgery. He will most definitely need to get surgery on that shoulder in the near future.
Bob Melvin in a no nonsense type guy, but Tatis is a zero F’a to give type and will do what he wants. I can see a stupid wrist type injury happening again.
I hope Tatis has growns up a bit through this Dominican MotorX BS! Finally steps up to to his paycheck and be the real damn deal!
User 2079935927
You know a lot of you think it’s easy to just deal a player like Trout or Ohtani. Given their skill set and contracts. Or in Octane’s case potential contract.
But let’s look at this logically Shall we?
First off
There’s only a handful of teams that could afford the aforementioned contracts.
So that takes it down from 30 clubs to about (Excluding the Angels) about a half dozen teams.
Dodgers
Red Sox
Mets
Yankees
Phillies
Of those which ones have the players on the major league roster and the minors to pull off a trade.?
And regarding Ohtani, which team has the players to trade for him and $$ to sign him long term contract.?
Because they’re not trading for him unless they can sign him first.
The only team I’m thinking is the Dodgers.
Unless he wants to go to the Big Apple. Then it’s a 3 team race. Dodgers,Mets and Yankees.
Regarding Trout. I think press has made big deal regarding his back issues. Trout say’s he’s not worried about it.
Trout is not going anywhere.
BTW I’m a Angels fan. I hope Ohtani stays with the Angels. But if he leaves, I can’t blame him to go for the money.
Thank_God_Im_Not_Tim_Dierkes
Teams who could and would trade for Trout and/or Ohtani, Philly, Mets, Marlins, Cubs, Padres, Giants, Twins, White Sox, Tigers, Yankees, Blue Jays, Orioles, Red Sox.
The Twins spent $35M/year on Correa. Certain players trigger different results and generational players get that result. Remember the Tigers are about to save $35M/year with Cabrera retiring.
17dizzy
The Cardinals have both the young major league players and prospects—— plus the Cash to get Ohtani THIS SEASON. The trade would highly benefit both teams both now and in the future.
Mystery Team
If Trout was still Trout he’d be easy to move. He’s still fairly young and he’s a serious draw the same for Ohtani. Teams will not hesitate to offer up an ungodly package for Ohtani he’s worth it as a draw alone never mind what he brings to the table in skills. My only problem with Ohtani would be future health. At some point he’s not going to be able to play both sides. Maybe he could close games but the toll his body will take will eventually take over. At some point he will have to choose and I gotta figure he’d stop pitching. All things being equal I’d take both guys over Juan “Base On Balls” Soto. Both those guys are killers looking to drive in runs while Soto will gladly take the walk with two outs and runners on.
Cody1981
He will end up being andruw jones but without a ring

Trout=loser
Mystery Team
I don’t know if I’d be that harsh. Yeah signing that deal to stay in that organization was silly but how was he supposed to know the Angels would forget that you need pitching as well in order to win? I feel like if the Angels had a real FO that knew what they were doing they could have won multiple titles. When your owner is a meddler who digs the long ball what are you supposed to do? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million more times the Angels should have gone all in on Cole not Rendon but at this point if you don’t know that you’re just as much of an idiot as Moreno.
phillyballers
You have Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle on the same team and can’t win.
Mystery Team
Neither guy is either of those two players not even close. Mickey Mantle sabotaged his own career I can only imagine how much better he would have been if he was 100% in 100% of the time and/or had access to the things Mike Trout does as far as training and conditioning. Ohtani has had a couple of great seasons but was also injury prone up until last year. He’s got a long way to go in order to start being referred to as Babe Ruth.

Well, since one of the consequences of HGH abuse consists in skeletal growth via somatomedin, here predominantly IGF-1, chronic inflammation of joints and connective tissue often constitutes one of the undesired side effects. Trout isn’t the first and won’t be the last juicer to suffer this fate.
cwsOverhaul
The rampant cheating (with mlb blind eye) in late ’90s taught fans moving forward to not blissfully gobble up unbelievable production of players as legit when the money is crazy……but other than Trout is great when healthy, how are you so sure in the final conclusion?
Not saying you are wrong. Lot of guys who used ped’s to get the big contract would get off the stuff and see their level of play drop to reality. He is still a mega star, and it seems reckless to risk the contract.
Mystery Team
I am constantly ribbing Trout but in all seriousness I wonder if missing 120 plus games due to a “strained calf” was actually more about his back? I find it hard to believe any ball player would miss that much time for a strain. I know the dude has definitely been softening up but that’s a lot of time for a strain.

There’s a lot of statistical evidence that most guys break down at around 32-35 years old, with most major names in the game showing a marked drop in productivity around 33-34 years old. Some guys have a bounce back or two in them but it’ll almost certainly still be nothing compared to their value through their roughly age 32 seasons.
The problem is there’s so so so much money in the game that should go to players and they don’t have access until free agency and so they’re openly underpaid from the jump off due to how large rosters are, how long and complicated the development process is for players to realize their potential, etc. And so tons of guys who consistently produce at their peak before they’re paid the big money want to get that money in free agency, but teams want to keep their annual budgets down and stretch that true value over extra years and by saving $20-40M a year pre arbitration and through the first couple years of arbitration, the players demand teams pay them later in their descent of free agent years- and all of them want to believe their body will be the same 5-10 years from now due to all the conditioning and training and health maintenance they do to stay sharp-but Father Time waits for no man and this issue shouldn’t be an excuse to not pay players their value.
I want to believe there’s a better way to accept done pnsyere are insanely gifted and pay them much earlier, even knowing that age 30-34 break down is coming no matter what.
More like NBA structure to contracts.

Most players are in significant decline before they even reach 32.

Trade him. This guy never plays in the 2nd half of the season especially when the Angels are out of the playoffs
