Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar has been diagnosed with a concussion and cervical neck strain, the club announced. He suffered the nasty injury in the fifth inning of last night’s win over the Giants. Tommy La Stella lofted a fly ball into shallow left-center field. Profar, playing left field, came in on the ball while shortstop C.J. Abrams tracked it over his shoulder.
The two players collided, and Abrams’ knee struck Profar underneath the chin. Trainers stabilized Profar’s neck and took him off the field on a cart. He was transferred to a local hospital for further evaluation. According to the team, he was released last night and has been recovering at home.
It’s a scary situation, one in which San Diego will no doubt prioritize Profar’s long-term health. The club hasn’t announced any sort of timetable for his return, though he seems likely to be placed on the seven-day concussion injured list shortly.
Profar has gotten the start in left field for 78 of the Friars’ 84 games. He’s playing at arguably a career-best level, carrying a .242/.343/.397 line with eight home runs across 361 plate appearances.

Looked bad. Hopefully it’s as minor as concussions go.
He started walking off the field and then collapsed again. Super scary.
talking baseball
How long did it take to get the cart out to the field ?
It should have been in the first 5 minutes and not 10 to 15.
dmp13
It took a long time. He tried and stopped once before he fell. He should never have been allowed to walk after that stop.
brat922
All the best wishes for his recovery. That was handled badly last night and I was appalled. It should never of taken 12 people that long to take care of business. A doctor should have known somebody should’ve been holding him, and he should’ve been on the golf cart much sooner!! There is no reason he should’ve had 1 to 2 more falls on the field with all those people around him to help. Ridiculous — Padres medical staff, get better!!
talking baseball
They should have never let him try and walk off by himself, at the very least have a guy on each side of him, with his arms around them.
It was a stupid idea to let him try and walk off in the first place. Should have been put in a collar and taken off by ambulance. Not a cart.
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
The Padres medical staff should be fired for the way they handled that. Several of them need to be replaced immediately.
elEddieG
Medical staff, no. Training staff, yes. It was the ATs that evaluated him & allowed him to walk. Once he collapsed the medical staff came onto the field & they were the ones who put him in a neck brace NOT the trainers like this post states. Trainers are the ones to blame here, not the medical staff. Only issue with medical staff is why they weren’t out there immediately.

Prayers that Profar heals up ok..In the meantime, time to bring up Esteury Ruiz, and give the kid a shot..
El Chupacabra
Trader AJ has reportedly expressed interest in Andrew Benintendi. Wonder if this accelerates the timeline at all.
Henry Silvestre
I think AJPs main target is a controllable Bryan Reynolds…not sure on availability but he has the trade chips to go hard for him..
Profar needs rest and good healing prayers from all of us… only ? Now is does Rooker come up (already on 40) or does Estury come up 40 move needed (maybe Wil Myers to 60IL retro )…stay tuned!
Longtimecoming
I was thinking the same – Myers is already on day 38 and not yet ready for a rehab, AS break on the horizon, I say that is best option today.
Also, Batten is on active list right now so why not give him 4-5 starts immediately. He has been playing Of at AAA.
CNichols
I saw someone from the SDUT tweet that Myers is almost ready to start a rehab assignment so I don’t think he’s going to the 60 day.
Rooker is already on the 40 man and slashing .279/.401/.596 right now with 14HR in AAA. They should give him a look and see if the bat plays. Padres desperately need SLG.
Brew’88
@CNic. You’re likely spot on about Rooker given he’s on the 40 roster, and he’s swinging hot bat. Add Beaty to Myers as guys nearing return. Though I’m not sure what they plan to do with Beaty.
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
Campusano, Wood, Rosario, and Knehr/2 lower level prospects for Reynolds seems about right..
Holy Cow!
You forgot to add Abrams.
Brew’88
Tippin. not a chance. Campy maybe but they won’t give up Wood (nor Abrams Donny). Besides, They won’t get Reynolds, price too steep.
Deleted Userr
@tippin Why would the Pirates trade for Campusano when they just drafted a catcher at 1/1 that’s the worst argument I’ve ever heard.
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
How long before he’s gonna be in the show Harambe? 3-4 years? You realize 1B and DH are options too..right? Love how you always bash trade ideas, but never put any out of your own..
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
Brewer..You say price is too steep, but adding Wood could very well get it done..We have several starting pitchers who are going into free agency, imploded in the second half last year, and frankly, are looking like it could happen again..AJ won’t let it happen without taking some serious chances..I’ll bet money that he goes all in
Brew88
@ tippin. I agree adding Wood would get it done, but that wasn’t my point. Wood has an outrageously high ceiling, which is why I said “not a chance”. Maybe I should have said slim to no chance. They need short-term OF help sure, but Reynolds will command a price they likely can’t pay, at least not in prospects. And Pitts. will only want prospects for Reynolds.
Hassell Jr, and Wood are eventual top 10 MLB prospects and would anchor the ML lineup (2023 Hassell? 2024 Wood?). Any prospect can be traded (ex Luis Patino) but those two are highly unlikely to be dealt.
I’m guessing they bring in a rest-of-season rental OF bat that will cost a lot less. With Myers and Beaty returning soon, and with Tatis possibly playing OF when he returns, and Profar not likely to be out long (dodged a bullet), they might not make a big splash in OF market.
AJ might go for it in some other way, but not likely with those two OF prospects as trade pieces.
I’m more concerned with RP to be honest, and general lack of bat control exhibited by most of the guys in their lineup.
Deleted Userr
@tippin What does it matter how long before he’s gonna be in the show? The Pirates aren’t going to make the playoffs this year or next year anyway (especially if they do trade Reynolds) and can get a catcher off the open market for something like $4m. Henry Davis should be making his way to the show right around the time the Pirates are returning to relevance. And putting Campy or Davis at 1B/DH reduces their value.
Davis is the Pirates’ catcher of the future. They aren’t trading for more catchers.
Deleted Userr
Reynolds likely doesn’t happen without Wood. He might have a high ceiling but at 19 and still in A-ball he basically has no floor.

Brew:
I somewhat agree, adding Wood might get it done. but Abrams would need to be added as well. According to the trade simulator, Reynolds has a median trade value of 83.5. Abrams (50.1), Campusano (10.4), Knehr (1.5). Rosario (2.5) and Wood (13.6) get close with a total of 80.0.
And I completely agree that the Padres aren’t going to spend that much prospect capital on Reynolds.
It’s reasonable to question the trade simulator, but I’ve been looking at past trades, and it seems to be fairly close on values. Even if it’s off off by 10-15%, Reynolds still looks far too expensive for the Padres.
Brew’88
@tad. Yeah I don’t question that it would cost the Pads a lot of prospects to get Reynolds. Just been saying they can’t afford him is all. It’s especially risky to assign trade value to a 19 year old with speed power and skill who is now skyrocketing up the charts. The Pads would be insane to trade him at his present value.
Even if the Pads had more other prospects to deal, I’m not of the opinion that Reynolds is the right guy, not when Hassell, Ruiz, Wood and Mears are knocking and Tatis is seriously being considered for CF/RF. A shorter term OF to bridge gap would be a better move I think.
Hard to watch my two favorite teams beat each other up this weekend! But fun too. Cheers my friend!
Jean Matrac
Henry Silvestre:
AJP may have the trade chips to acquire Reynolds, but doubt he’s willing to give up what it would take. The Padres system has been thinned out, and depleting it even more isn’t really an option, IMO.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Sorry folks, no bad feelings intended, but Profar is the epitome of a slightly below average player. Reynolds or Benintendi would be an answer to a profound upgrade.
Icarus.
Regardles, AJ sucks.
Hired Gun 23
Get better, JP…and yes, time for the next man up to try and get the job done.
Brew’88
Quick recovery to El Patron. Maybe NOW they call up Esteury Ruiz?
Crunchtime1969
Batten should get a shot now. Azocar can’t hit.
Somebody needs to slap CJ Abrams. That’s the second time he’s been picked off first base. Last night cost them a run, and Musgrove a much deserved W. Wake up youngster.
Jung Like My Daddy
Should call up Esteury Ruiz and see what he can do.
Grisham should be platooned with Azocar and Batten can platoon with Mazara against lefties.
Gonna have to piece it together till guys are healthy.
Once Tatis Jr is healthy it should be Tatis Jr. Grisham/platoon, and Mazara/platoon.
Profar should go to a super utility role once Tatis Jr is healthy.
Move cronenworth to ss and profar to 2B against righties.
Move Kim to ss and cronenworth to 2B against lefties.
Padres should get a cheap platoon RH 1B for Hosmer before the deadline.
SanDiegoTom
Nope
Scott_11
Hopefully he’s okay.
The Blue Jays and Padres should swap Teo Hernandez for Blake Snell.
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
Done. Where do we sign?
solaris602
Is it just me, or does it seem like we’re seeing players colliding under a fly ball in practically every game for just about every team?
Nevrfolow
was almost expecting the padres to be fined for their handling of the situation.
HalosHeavenJJ
Yikes. That is scary. Baseball is baseball but rattling around the brain can affect life.
lebowskiachiever
The Padres’ medical staff has pretty consistently made some very “interesting” judgement calls, and I’m wondering if perhaps there needs to be some reconsideration of procedures and staffing. There is a clear pattern of downplaying the severity of injuries and delaying treatment. Before this emergency situation, there was the Machado ankle injury in which the refusal to acknowledge the serious nature of the injury and not put him on the IL left the Padres short a player for 11 days (and even now he is still very clearly injured). Last year, it was Tatis and Lamet who were both in need of surgery that they did not get in a timely fashion, the year before it was Clevinger. Then, of course there was the infamous case of Colin Rea. The behavior of the staff sticks out like a sore thumb in the context of a very cautious atmosphere in baseball these past several years. I have no idea why, but every time there is a questionable medical judgement in baseball, it seems to involve the Padres.
Deleted Userr
What infamous case of Colin Rea? The one where the Marlins traded the Padres not one but TWO Tommy John pitchers?
jimmy ray hart
LaStella is getting so bad – he’s hurting other team’s chances of winning
Deleted Userr
They not IL’ing him too? Did they not learn after what happened with Machado?
Sadler
You forgot the part where the trainers weren’t paying any attention, Profar collapsed, and one of trainers almost knee’d him in the face.
Dennis Boyd
Has anyone here who thinks the medical staff should be fired ever seen (or played) any contact sports to see how injuries are handled…
Dennis Boyd
@harambe, what did they ‘learn’ from not Putting Machado on the IL? @Sadler, where in the video did you see a trainer knee him? The trainer was trimming to help him to the ground.
Sadler
I didn’t say he knee’d him, I said almost.
The trainer lost his balance and fell to the ground with him. None of that should have happened. Looked like amateur hour at the Improv.

Profar just put on concussion DL, so are all the armchair MD/GMs here happy now? I’m glad they did this so Rooker can get a decent look before he’s DFA’d and does better elsewhere
