4:46pm: Sale told reporters (including Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe) that he believes he’ll miss 4-6 weeks, but he will pitch again in 2022. A more specific timeline could be known once Sale visits a specialist, either later today or tomorrow.
2:20pm: The Red Sox announced to reporters, including Chris Cotillo of MassLive, that Sale’s pinky finger is broken. “Left fifth finger fracture” is the official diagnosis. There’s still no word on his expected absence.
1:45pm: Red Sox starter Chris Sale departed today’s game after recording just two outs, as an Aaron Hicks comebacker hit his hand and appeared to injure it. While the extent of the injury won’t be known until testing is done, the television broadcast showed obvious damage to the hand, with Sale immediately leaving the field without hesitation. (Twitter video link from Starting 9.)
Making this extra frustrating for the Red Sox, this was just Sale’s second start of the year. He missed the first few months of the season due to a stress fracture in his rib cage. After months of rehab and getting himself back into game shape, he’s now had the incredible bad luck to be struck on his pitching hand and suffering yet another injury. The lefty also underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, missing all of that season and most of the 2021 campaign. All told, he’s thrown less than 50 innings since the end of the 2019 campaign.
The timing of the injury is troublesome for the Red Sox, who have dealt with a number of rotation woes recently. Nathan Eovaldi just returned after missing over a month, but Rich Hill, Michael Wacha, Connor Seabold and Josh Winckowski have all landed on the IL in the past few weeks. The All-Star break begins tomorrow, giving the club a few days to figure things out. But if Sale has to miss time, they will be down to a rotation of Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta and Kutter Crawford.
After the break, the Red Sox are playing 17 straight days, meaning they will certainly need reinforcements. Hill and Wacha are making progress but won’t be ready after the break, reports Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe. Garrett Whitlock has made nine starts for the club this year but has been working out of the bullpen since returning from his own IL stint. The club could consider moving him back to the rotation, though he would need to build back up for such an assignment. Prospect Brayan Bello made two starts at the big league level recently but was rocked to a 10.13 ERA and optioned back down to the minors. There’s also James Paxton, who was signed in the offseason with the knowledge that he wouldn’t be available until the second half of the season due to undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. However, he’s yet to begin a rehab assignment and is likely still a few weeks away from returning.
Of course, Boston could also look to outside additions, as the August 2 trade deadline is now just over two weeks away. Despite the mounting injuries to the rotation, the club began today’s game 48-44, just one game behind the Blue Jays for playoff spot. (Though the Jays have since beat the Royals, moving a half game further ahead.) Some of the top starters thought to be available on the market are Luis Castillo, Tyler Mahle and Frankie Montas, among others. The Red Sox will have plenty of competition in those markets, however, as most contenders are looking for extra arms at this time of year.
cvcarson2
Broken pinkie. Very bad. Sucks because he just came back. Hopefully a speedy recovery.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Unfortunately, it looks like the type of injury that will require surgery to fix so he’s probably out for 6-8 weeks. The Sox season is over; they should be sellers at the deadline and retool over the winter. Biggest decisions to make are whether or not to re-sign Xander and Eovaldi. If Nate will sign for just two guaranteed years plus an option, they should pull the trigger. Xander is a tougher call to make. While I love Xander, I’m not sure I’d give him the 7-8 year contract he’s probably looking for. Save that money for a Devers extension; Raffy deserves a $300M deal and they would be foolish to trade him or let him leave via free agency after 2023.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dottie – With all due respect, I think you’re the only person I know who believes there’s still a decision to be made with Xander. That decision was already made long ago, before Story was signed and before last winter’s super shortstop free agent class raised Xander’s asking price substantially.
Remember John Henry’s last words … “painful decisions will be made”.
Expect one more lowball offer to Xander, then a shrug of Henry’s shoulders as he mutters “We tried”.
SonnySteele
We seem to be seeing a fair number of face-saving offers lately that teams are 90 percent sure the players will reject.
kingbum
FPG I agree….The signing of Trevor Story was the writing on the wall. Next season Jarren Duran will be the everyday CF and Keke will move back to his natural position 2B while Story moves to short. Honestly Devers has improved a bit defensively at third I’d try to re-sign JD and try to improve RF/1B. I’m also looking for an consistent innings eater for the rotation, doesn’t have to be flashy just gives ya 6 or 7 innings every start and doesn’t have injury issues.
dbdmack
Kiki’s deal up this season I believe. He hasn’t show any consistency enough to sign him.
Sox are very concerned with the lack of power from both X and JD. Hits are falling for them, but they are not driving the ball.
cvcarson2
I wouldn’t necessarily say season is over. If they could pick up two relievers and a 1B/OF at the deadline, I think they have a great chance at getting a wildcard.
Their starting pitching hasn’t been the issue in most games. They give up the game when the pen comes in. Luckily they got Whitlock back to help with the pen, but if they could get two more RP, they would be set IMO. Wishful thinking hahaha.

Samuel
Every Spring as I write my take on teams approaching seasons I include the caveat: “As long as they remain relatively healthy”.
The way MLB is being played today is out of hand. Doesn’t remotely resemble baseball that I saw played for over 50 years. It all has to do with the pitching and hitting. Throw it harder and harder, put more and more spin on it…..and if the ball’s a little slick because the seams are recessed…well those things happen. And now it’s pitchers getting hit by comebackers as we sit enthralled at the TV screen looking at how many MPH the pitch was thrown at and now many MPH it was hit at.
The wonderful thing about baseball was it’s balance. Hitting, fielding, base running, pitching, bunting, base stealing, hitting the ball to to the open area, deking the opposition, thinking 2 innings ahead, etc. All that’s out the window. The Yuppies that wanted to be baseball players but weren’t good enough went to gradate schools, crunched numbers on the computers, and got high paying jobs telling players, coaches and managers what to do and what not to do……
And we’re left with: “Throw it as hard as you can” along with: “Put a good swing on it and hit it as hard as you can……and if it goes into the oppositions glove then it’s not your fault….you’re “unlucky”…..and we’ve got stats for that so you still get the big bucks in arbitration or in your agents negotiations with team negotiators”. Got hit by a pitch or a batted ball? That’s what long-term contracts are for.
srechter
This reads as one, tired distillation of “get of my lawn” sentiment. You speak of throwing hard and hitting hard as some form of failure of the game—as though these haven’t been admirable traits since the days of Bob Feller and Babe Ruth. Those nostalgically pining for the old days of baseball are merely missing a version of the game that was more achievable, and less remarkable.
Samuel
srechter;
Feller and Ruth were exceptional players.
Today there are players that don’t last 2 years in MLB that throw the ball harder and hit it further.

The Yuppies that wanted to be baseball players but weren’t good enough went to gradate schools, crunched numbers on the computers,
===================================
As I like to say, there is nothing new out there except for the computer and the optical equipment. The computers only calculate the stuff we use to estimate by sight.
Further, baseball using computers is the same as any other business of sport. If the computer tells me we’ve ordered too much glass, I’m happy to know that. If the computer tells me to play 22 feet off the line, and 265 feet from the plate, I am happy to know that.
But more importantly, why wouldn’t you want to know it?
Dumpster Divin Theo
You yuppies there, “Crunching numbers on the computers”. Is this a bit?
Samuel
Joe;
Did the computer tell you that strikeouts and walks would go up by obscene amounts consistently for over 20 years?
Did the computer tell you that average game would go on for 70% longer?
Did the computer tell you that the percentage of batted balls being put in play would be down to such a low level that the Commissioners Office has spent over a decade attempting to reverse that and hasn’t?
Did the computer tell you that a blog would start that spends literally every day of the season detailing player injuries, and they miss many?
Did the computer tell you that a team has a 26 man roster and during the course of the year has over 2 times as many player that played for them?
Did the computer tell you that even a baseball fan that has other responsibilities during the season often tunes in after 3-4 days and wonders who’s on his/her team and where some of the players that were on the team are.
Did the computer tell you that starting pitchers routinely threw over 200 innings a year, some 300 innings, and now if they throw 170 that’s sensational.
Did the computer tell you that TJ surgery is no longer an epidemic, but a routine procedure?
Di the computer tell you that sports fans are switch from watching baseball to the other 3 professional team sports each year.
Did the computer tell you that the only thing saving the sport is rotisserie baseball – where participants assemble a team of players to compare their statistics to other participants teams? Meanwhile fans don’t understand the game so they can’t appreciate it.
Did they tell you that modern baseball parks are amusement parks with electronic games to play in the concourses, gourmet foods to eat , and bars to meet people in because the games are so boring? Like going to Disneyland or 6 Flags, but the center attraction is guys doing something on a field.
JoeBrady
In no particular order:
There are a lot of reasons why games go longer. One is that we use more RPs. This is related to some of your other points, but you wouldn’t need a computer to tell you that an average RP, for one inning, is probably better that 90% of the SPs after 6 innings.
TJS is more routine for the same reason why open-heart surgery is more routine. Doctors have gotten better at it. Same as knee surgery was before arthroscopic surgery.
IRT viewership, I was told BB was going to fall to soccer 40 years ago. Somehow, the networks are fighting for BB content.
IRT gourmet food, that makes you sound old. Like as “in the good old days, we’d happily wait 45 minutes for a cold hot dog”. Not me. I like an ice cold Heineken or Becks, with nachos rather than a warm Bud and a cold hot dog. I don’t see how it is honestly possible to prefer “some” aspects of the good old days.
Paleobros
Samuel, you know you typed this screed out on a computer too.

Cubs fans are too busy hating the Cards to bother with the ChiSox.
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
@DonnyElementary
That’s true. But that’s a two way street. There are just as many Cub fans who do the exact same thing.
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
@Fever Pitch Guy
Though it is true there’s plenty of contempt for the Cardinals amongst their fan base, I assure you there are also multitudes who “bother” with the White Sox as well.
Fever Pitch Guy
Kelly – I’ll take your word for it, as I’ve never been to Chicago.
Oldman58
Partially true. Sox fans hate the Cubs and some Cub fans hate the Sox while most Cubs fans don’t give a crap about the Sox. Unless they’re winning most of the White Sox “fans” don’t care about the Sox
Luke Nowak
Tbh at least in my circle way more cubs fans are hating on the Sox then the the Sox are on cubs.
SonnySteele
Since I have MLB.TV and can watch any team, the announcers are important to me when deciding what game to watch. So I watch the Mets and Yankees a lot because I like Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, Michael Kay and Carlos Beltran. (I love the way Beltran says “heeter” and “peecher” instead of hitter and pitcher.)
Luke Nowak
Yeah that’s my problem with cubs fans, so many cubs fans I meet are casual fans who can’t name more then a handful players and just go to the games to hang out and wear the gear to look cool.
Holy Cow!
Cubs fans hating the Cards makes sense. Sox fans hating the Cubs for more than four games that they play each other does not make sense.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yup. Lot of Cub fans just live here to troll other teams and fan bases, sort of like what happened to the baathists in Iraq- used to being in power, resorted to life as an insurgent. Lof of these fans, once widely mocked around baseball, have gone underground into the trollverse
Holy Cow!
You speak the truth, Oldman.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yeah Sox fans used to suffer from a deep inferiority complex but that largely went away after 2005. Lot of Sox fans just shook their heads in pity when the Cubs continued to scuffle then gave the Cubs their props when they won it all in 2016. For some reason, lot of Cub fans in the city won’t let it go. Baseball should be fun. Good natured ribbing is one thing. But some of the deep trolling has taken on a life of its own.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Gary Oldman is a man of many talents
Dumpster Divin Theo
One of my friends who’s a diehard Cub fan and has lived a few blocks from Wrigley most of his adult life went to the Fergie Jenkins statute unveiling. He said lot of the Cub fans on their way to get drinks were being noisy and disruptive as they tried to make their way past during the ceremony and didn’t know who Fergie was. “Who’s that old guy, did he used to work here?” someone said.
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
@Oldman58
That has certainly never been my experience. Sounds like quite a biased take to me. Pretty misleading and somewhat inaccurate statement honestly.
Holy Cow!
Nope, Oldman nailed it.
Luke Nowak
Maybe in your experience but for me the cubs fans I know constantly hate on the Sox nearly every game and it gets to be pretty insufferable. It’s probably on both sides though. Every fan base has some bad apples
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
@DonnyElementary
Nor really. That’s a facetious take to perpetuate your biased view. In reality there are every bit as many Cub fans who do the exact same thing. Just because you (and apparently Oldman58) want to paint this warped picture of reality doesn’t make it so.
Kelly Wunsch N' Munch
@Luke Nowak
That’s because you’re speaking of reality. Not every Cub fan is an insufferable jerk about the White Sox. Just like not every White Sox fan is obsessed with the Cubs. There are many on both sides of the aisle that absolutely are obsessed with what the team on the other side of town is doing. It isn’t this one-sided thing that some on this thread would have you believe.

I don’t care how rich you are. You can’t have a $30 million/yr pitcher who doesn’t pitch.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Dodgers would easily outbid us. Mookie was taking the highest bid. And honestly, he’s gonna decline in that contract. We should have traded him mid-season 2019 to get back more.
fred-3
They could’ve just gave him an extension to avoid free agency. Plus, he’s gonna decline more gracefully than a high velocity starting pitcher.
There’s also the fact that Mookie was the best African American Red Sox ever. Should’ve been more of an importance to keep him with the organization and the city’s checkered history towards blacks.
You Can Put It In The Books
Umm. What?
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Of course you’re all going to ask for sources, but rumors are he wasn’t signing here. Remember he asked until the off-season to sign a contract then signed with the Didgers in the off-season after the trade? Yeah, he had no indication of coming back.
Move on, it was two years ago. Sale at least is a gamer, team player and takes responsibility for his poor performance. He can’t stay healthy but he’s the kind of guy I would sign in a minute based on his ability and character.
JoeBrady
Should’ve been more of an importance to keep him with the organization and the city’s checkered history towards blacks.

Are there any cities in America, and likely the rest of the world, that doesn’t have a checkered history with African-Americans, or some other minority?

All the National League teams except the Phillies and Cardinals initially embraced integration. The Red Sox famously gave Jackie Robinson a tryout but had no intention of signing him

Your right, every city in America was racist, though.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – You’re 100% correct, it’s unfortunate so many don’t know (or care) about America’s history. Italians, for instance, were treated horribly back in the day.
loc.gov/classroom-materials/immigration/italian/un…
During the years of the great Italian immigration, they also had to confront a wave of virulent prejudice and nativist hostility.
As immigration from Europe and Asia neared its crest in the late 19th century, anti-immigrant sentiment soared along with it. The U.S. was in the grips of an economic depression, and immigrants were blamed for taking American jobs. At the same time, racialist theories circulated in the press, advancing pseudo scientific theories that alleged that “Mediterranean” types were inherently inferior to people of northern European heritage. Drawings and songs caricaturing the new immigrants as childlike, criminal, or subhuman became sadly commonplace. One 1891 cartoon claimed that “If immigration was properly restricted, you would never be troubled with anarchism, socialism, the Mafia and such kindred evils!”
Attacks on Italians were not limited to the printed page, however. From the late 1880s, anti-immigrant societies sprang up around the country, and the Ku Klux Klan saw a spike in membership. Catholic churches and charities were vandalized and burned, and Italians attacked by mobs. In the 1890s alone, more than 20 Italians were lynched.
One of the bloodiest episodes took place in New Orleans in 1891. When the chief of police was found shot to death on the street one night, the mayor blamed “Sicilian gangsters” and rounded up more than 100 Sicilian Americans. Eventually, 19 were put on trial and, as the nation’s Italian Americans watched nervously, were found not guilty for lack of evidence. Before they could be freed, however, a mob of 10,000 people, including many of New Orleans’ most prominent citizens, broke into the jail. They dragged 11 Sicilians from their cells and lynched them, including two men jailed on other offenses. Italians worldwide were outraged, but the U.S. press generally approved of the action. It was the largest single mass lynching in U.S. history.
rct
@JoeBrady: Pretty sure the ‘rest of the world’ doesn’t have that kind of history with ‘African-Americans’. I’m not sure why other countries around the world would be having a ‘checkered history’ with *Americans*.
JoeBrady
Fever Pitch Guy1 hour ago
Joe – You’re 100% correct, it’s unfortunate so many don’t know (or care) about America’s history.
==========================
It’s not America’s history; it’s everyone’s history. In the entire history of the world, you were either beating on someone, or someone was beating on you.
IRT to the Sicilians in New Orleans, but a lot of people don’t know that the Irish built a lot of the bridges in the South. Folks would ask why you would pay an Irishman to build a bridge, when you had slaves available, The reason was you’d have to reimburse the slave owner if something went wrong. An Irishman falls to his death from the top of the bridge? You go down to the docks and get another Irishman.
You know the only way we’ve made any progress? By burning schitt down. Europe and Japan are peaceful only because we burned the place to the ground.
GaryWarriorsRedSox
Um, Fred.., just to let you know.. it’s 2022. Why you bringing up stuff from two or three years ago? Might as well say the Red Sox are still World Series champions then if you have that mindset.

Mookie would’ve left as a free agent. LA overpaid him after the trade but he probably would’ve went out west as a free agent. Boston wanted to get something for him Vertigo and Jeter Downs isn’t exactly a huge haul. Probably got 1 other player. Not sure who it was.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Connor Wong was the third player in the deal, but keep in mind that Boston was also able to dump 1/2 of David Price’s contract in that deal so while that lessened the return, it allowed them to get under the CBT cap and reset. With that said, losing Mookie was a huge loss for this team. They’ll never find another player with his skills and power; he’s truly a 5 tool player. The only thing that will keep him out of the Hall of Fame is his hip. If it keeps degenerating then he could be all done by age 35 or 36. It would be a shame to see injuries derail his HOF trajectory. Mookie will forever be revered in Boston.
Fever Pitch Guy
Dottie – Well said. His size and ability to stay healthy was the biggest factor in Boston’s reluctance to go over $300M. It’s way too soon to determine if their concerns were justified.

Great Job Bloom!!! Depending on Sale who is as brittle as kindling wood. You needed a first baseman who could hit not named Dalbac who can’t! You had Schwarber whose 28 homeruns would look great now but you let him go.
You needed a closer and did not pick up one. Brassier was a one year wonder and is awful. But you knew this !
I don’t know if you did this or Henry told you to do it but this team stinks and cannot beat AL East Teams.
Bloom sell the parts off and then resign !!!
JoeBrady
Hey, AL34 has returned. I predicted that he’d return if Sale broke his finger on a line drive, and that he would blame Bloom for not anticipating a broken finger.
IRT Dalbec, he had a .792 OPS last year and might’ve been the best hitter in baseball in Aug-Sept with a 1.053 OPS and 14 HRs in 139 ABs.. Replacing him after that would’ve been extremely stupid.
And Brasier had an ERA+ of 136 from 2018-2021 (4 years). Do you know anything about the Red Sox?
GaryWarriorsRedSox
Yup, now just waiting for KD17 and 30parks. They should be pulling up soon after the Sox give up 63 runs in 2 games this weekend
AL34
Yeah I know the Red Sox a long time. I saw them trade away their good players like Carlton Fisk, Fred Lynn, Rick Burleson, Johnny Damon, Mookie Betts, and a lot of others. I’m tired of seeing them trade their top guys for cheaper alternatives.
This team beat up crap teams in June and cannot beat up good teams in the AL East. Dalbac is a big cheaper disappointment. Brassier had a good year in 2018 and has not been the same since. Needed a relief closer and did not get one. Wacha hurt, Hill 43 years old, the starting pitchers are not great and Seebokd looks awful Jin his starts. Pivetta is a 5th starter at best and was never that good with the Phillies. This team is done and they are going to trade Boggarts because they do not want to pay him.
This is all on Bloom
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I n a couple years though this team will be nasty with the talent we have. Bloom does take some responsibility for that.
Ham Fighter
I feel bad for sale even though he’s the biggest jerk in baseball. He can’t catch a break I think he stole jobu’s rum in the clubhouse.
YankeesBleacherCreature
There are far greater “jerks” in baseball than Sale if he even qualifies as one. I’d put Josh Donaldson several rungs on the jerk ladder above Sale. I don’t even understand how the TV incident is even a narrative if he owned up to it and compensated the loss(es).
darkstar61
In his owning up for the TV incident he attacked the fans for catching him doing it
So sure he owned up to it, but did so while indicating his frustration over the reason he felt he had to own up to it
In the interview he also fessed up to the fact he is a hot head, acts like a baby often and is not exactly a great role model. It’s refreshing to see him accept and admit his faults, but he still is all those issues
Ham Fighter
So even sale says he a jerk while some people on this board still defend him being a great guy
Fever Pitch Guy
As much as I appreciated him admitting he acted like an idiot, the fact he showed no remorse and dug a deeper hole with comments such as “sports involves lots of pressure, office jobs such as banking do not” didn’t exactly help his cause.
He did have a point though, players are told to “take it into the tunnel” when they need to vent so that it’s not in public view. Better to do it there with nobody around than let’s say smashing a phone with a bat while teammates are running for safety.
And the way Sale immediately left the field today and went into the clubhouse, I almost guarantee he blew a gasket and probably screamed a bunch of profanities and kicked a few things. At least he was away from public view.
LouWhitakerHOF
I wonder who the Red Sox add before the deadline to take his spot in the rotation. Baseball players get hurt more then any other sport. I need a lot more then 4 DL spots on my fantasy baseball team.
Oldman58
Broken finger? Will he still be able to do rock paper especially scissors in the locker room?
sufferforsnakes
Yeah, that little sucker was totally crooked. He’s done.
KyleT
Red Sox didnt have that good of a team to begin with this year, and with the rash of pitching injuries, I think its time to sell at the Deadline. Sorry, if your a season ticket holder or even if you have tickets to an upcoming game. But, this team has no luck. Better to move the short-term parts, and spend the rest of the year figuring out which kid can handle the spotlight.
They have some pieces that will bring good value in prospects, if youre not going to sign Martinez, Bogaerts, Vazquez, Eovaldi, its time to cash some of them in.
all in the suit that you wear

Ugh. That’s too bad. Terrible luck there. Get well soon Sale.

Nine pitchers used by Red Sox in what was a blow out by the bottom of the 4th. Don’t they have a pitcher or two who could soak up a few innings? Or maybe they don’t care with the break coming up.
Ham Fighter
It’s the all star break dummy
mike156
Did you bother reading “Or maybe they don’t care with the break coming up.” part, or, nah, much more fun to insult….
spitball
Sorry, the Red Sox situation is dire, but not because Sale injured himself again! It’s because 10 of the 26 guys on this team shouldn’t be playing above triple A! Bloom is responsible for this mess, and needs to be gone. His modus operandi will keep Boston from ever competing for Championships, and likely will keep them under 500 for the remainder of his tenure.
KyleT
So Chris Sale’s injury isn’t to blame, what about Matt Straham, Tyler Danish, Enrique Hernandez, Conor Seabold, Rich Hill, Josh Winckowiski, Michael Wacha, Matt Barnes, Triston Casas, Christian Arroyo, Trevor Story, Thad Ward, Josh Taylor and Garrett Whitlock. Are you saying that many injuries are typical for an MLB team?
Sometimes youre the Bowling Ball, sometimes youre the Pins. This just isnt the Red Sox season.
Yanks4life22
Honestly I used to say that type of IL list was a curse on a teams season but it’s pretty much the standard in 2022. Players don’t push through minor injuries anymore, too much money on the line to allow their statistical lines to suffer bc of nagging injuries. And it’s not like players are punished for being injury prone anymore either. Some of the biggest contracts in the game are linked to a lot of IL time. So 5-10 guys on the IL is pretty much standard for any team these days.
KyleT
“pretty much standard” As a Yankee fan you should know this: Yankees have best record in baseball, and they are one of the healtiest team in the league. Red Sox have had a lot of injuries to their pitching staff and are falling apart. Last year, Red Sox were one of the healthiest, at least until late August, Sept., and they went to ALCS — None of this is a coincidence.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Medical tech is better today to detect injuries. Pushing through injuries in the past meant shorter careers. Do you think Mattingly would’ve had a longer career playing today if he got better medical attention for his back?

It’s too bad the All Star Game isn’t in Toronto this year. Or Atlanta.

Ha, never thought about that … woulda been funny if Toronto was the scheduled host city.
So will Atlanta ever get the game back? Them winning it all last year was karma, baby. So glad they got “compensated” for being robbed of the ASG.

Kudos to Darragh McDonald for phrasing it properly: “Chris Sale Suffers Broken Finger” instead of “Chris Sale Breaks Finger,” the way it’s usually and inaccurately phrased. Sale didn’t break his finger, Aaron Hicks did, with a 106.7-mph line drive. Likewise, Mr. McDonald gets it right saying: “Rays’ Harold Ramirez Suffers Broken Thumb.” Harold didn’t break it; Jordan Lyles did with a 91-mph fastball.
Dr. Samuel Johnson would approve. Get the Pulitzer ready.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b

GaryWarriorsRedSox
I disagree and I say so because people point out others mistakes and then are wrong themselves are at fault.
Aaron Hicks did not break Chris Sale’s finger. The baseball did. Aaron Hicks was 60 ft away at the time of the break.
So if this poster is going to be technical and critical about the phrase “Chris Sale breaks his hand,” then he could at least be correct about the matter.
Goose
Praying Chris Sale was the savior of the season was a false hope. All this did was ruin the Red Sox marketing for the rest of the season. ‘Chris Sale will save us’. He didn’t last year. He wasn’t this year. He is too injured to be an ace.
The Red Sox are going to ride with what they have and do EXACTLY what they did last year. Shop at the bargain basement unless they can get a Schwarber situation to fall in their lap.
Now it is a question will they deal Bogaerts or not because they have ZERO intention of signing. Maybe they will really horrify the fans and move Bogaerts and Devers. Especially when they can get a boatload for Devers with another year on his contract.
Poster formerly known as . . .
How would you feel if the front office surprised you and reloaded with a trade of Bogaerts and Devers and then traded for Soto?
AL34
The demise of this team is all on Bloom. Sale is unfortunately injury prone and has not been the same pitcher since 2018 and he missed chunks of that season too. The trade of Renfro for Jackie Bradley Jr. was awful and I thought that it was political move. Who gives up 30 homeruns from Renfro for that atrocious JBJ contact? Letting Schwarber go when he wanted to stay was dumb and then appointing Dalbac the full time first baseman was incredibly stupid. He cannot hit period and does not produce near enough at that position. Not picking up a closer was bad as well. He picked up a 43 year old pitcher in Hill and a shakey starter in Wacha. I know they had injuries but this is on him and his military “Rube Goldberg” cheap fixes. He ownes this whether he did it on his own or under Henry’s guidance. They cannot compete with the AL East and you can see the writing on the wall with Boggarts and JD Martinez and maybe Devers. We are the Tampa Bay low budget Red Sox going forward!
KyleT
Demise? Wtf. A little extreme there. Red Sox are building a long-term contender. The 2022 Red Sox were never meant to be a full on contender. Maybe if things broke their way, like last season. But, the injury bug has decimated the pitching staff. Stuff happens, but the bigger picture is bright. They currently have 5 players in the top 100 prospects list, plus many more on the cusp. As well as, lots of money clearing, so they should be very active in FA this year.
Not sure how you figure the “Tampa Bay low budget Red Sox”. Red Sox spent 203M while TB spent 88M. Do you know how numbers works?
AL34
You think this is a successful season so far? You think spending the money on Michael Wacha and Hill was well spent? You think picking up Jackie Bradley Jr ridiculous contract was money well spent? You thinking trading Renfro for him was a good move when he was making less money. You lost 31 homeruns there. Was letting Schwarber go with his 28 homeruns this year a great move? Was anointing Dalbac the first baseman the right move the way he is playing now? Was not picking up a closer a Goff move and letting Hansel Robles and his 6 blown saves a good move? Was signing Matt Barnes with his streakiness a good move? Was signing Paxton a good move who is of no immediate help? Chris Sale has been hurt since 2018 and how would you depend on him like Bloom seems to think?
Yes, this team was hit by the injury bug, but it is a poorly constructed team and they spent good money on shakey players. This is on Bloom as the GM and the Buck stops with him. This might be okay in low budget Tampa where fans do not support the team but the press, media, and fans are not going to tolerate this team along with the prices they charge for tickets.
Bruin1012
So Al just a question the team got lucky last year and is just bad this year or did the team stay healthy last year thus performing well beyond expectations. Did the team get unlucky this year or due to injuries and at one point having 4 rookies in the starting staff cause predictable poor results?
The reality is you may be right about Bloom but we won’t know until this offseason. Here’s reality with more then 100 million potentially coming off the books then 1). We are going to find out what ownership is really going to do and 2) if Ownership allows Bloom to keep an over 200 million payroll who is he going to bring back and add. It’s potentially a big offseason so before crucifying Bloom for being hamstrung with not a lot of money to work with and having to pick around the edges let’s see what happens this offseason. If Bloom still picks around the edges and the payroll is reduced significantly then that will be an ownership issue. If Bloom is given free rain to go over 200 million plus in payroll with his pickups well then that will be on Bloom if it doesn’t work out. Let’s see what happens can’t wait to see who’s right the anti-Bloom crowd or the Bloom crowd.
KyleT
“You think this is a successful season so far?” What did I say gave you anything close to that being my opinion? You have to make up things just to have a legit argument.
1) Whats up with the Renfroe trade? I guess you don’t know this but the main part of the trade was to acquire Alex Binelas (19 HR in HighA) and Hamilton, not getting JBJ. But, dont let your twisted mind misunderstand me, I dont think it was a good trade, but, at least be fair and include all the parts. Now can we talk about the Pivetta and Seabold for Workman and Hembree trade.
2) “Sale has not been the same since 2018” Sale was injured in 2018, (5 starts from July 28th thru the rest of the season). Yet the GM at the time signed him to a 5yr/150M contract with ZERO injury protection. And you are finding fault with Bloom over that?
3) You say “I know they had injuries” Then proceed to rip off several problems directly related to those injuries, as if they’re Blooms fault:
-Chris Sale, already discussed
-Dalbec, wouldn’t be at first if Casas wasnt injured
-Robles, was only closing games due to a rash of injuries to other RPs
-Barnes, hes injured
-Paxton, also injured, and signed to next to nothing in 2022, with 23 being his target year.
So you want to sound reasonable by mentioning the injuries, then proceed to type several paragraphs dismissing that point, and ripping on the very same injured players.
4) Your comparing TB to Bos makes zero sense, other than Bloom. Red Sox are at the salary cap, Tampa Bay never has. And since the Red Sox don’t have that good of a team (farm system was in terrible shape when Bloom came in), it would be stupid to go over the cap in 2022 and cost draft picks and pool money.
GaryWarriorsRedSox
Some people just complain and point out faults. There’s not a single thing in the history of the universe that doesn’t have faults. Some people Point them out and some people come up with solutions.
It’s like at work.., don’t come to me pointing out all the problems here, without coming up with solutions along with it.
Anyone can point out that Hunter Renfroe had 31 home runs but he could have hit 10 of them this weekend and the Red Sox still would have lost. Hunter Renfroe’s not the problem and neither is Jackie Bradley Jr. But some people have a microscope and look for warts on the back side of a horse’s ear and some people have a big picture view point. To each their own.
AL34
Don’t kill the messenger okay! If you think that Bloom made good moves then God Bless You! If you are happy with this team, then good for you. If you think Bloom is a great GM then good for you.
It is a long way from the minors to the majors regarding prospects and all. Look up Jeff Ledbetter, Pat Dodson, Sam Bowen, Allen Ripley, Joel Finch, Jim Dorsey, Phil Plantier, Win Remerswaal, and I can keep going. Seabold has struggled big time and there are no guarantees he is going to make it. You actually think Pivetta is good? He is a long reliever and 5th starter at best. He looked good against Tampa in the playoffs last year.
When Bloom trades Boggarts you are not going to get top guys for a two month rental.
Story has been regressing for every year now. What is your point about Renfro? Story hit 3 homeruns in two games this year. You think JBJ is a good hitter? He is a defensive outfielder and late inning replacement at best.
This team is bad maybe part because of injuries but a lot of it is on Bloom. Bloom owns it or maybe Henry does too. It seems he has more interest in soccer than baseball nowadays.
KyleT
“Look up Jeff Ledbetter, Pat Dodson, Sam Bowen, Allen Ripley, Joel Finch, Jim Dorsey, Phil Plantier, Win Remerswaal”
I dont have to, I know every name on that list is ancient history. How about this list Mookie Betts, Anthony Rizzo, Eduado Rodriguez, Manuel Margot, Xander Bogaerts, Jalen Beeks, Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Christian Vazquez, Raphael Devers, Jackie Bradley, Brock Holt, Jarren Duran, Andrew Benintendi – Everyone is still in the Big Leagues and producing.
You hold on to your prospects, while adding more from other teams through trades. Then supplement positions that are weak thru Free Agency. You like to call it the “Tampa Bay Way”, I prefer to call it the “Smart Way”.
Stop living in the past man.
Cooperdooper7
Mudy… Brock Holt is not playing anymore.
KyleT
Oops. Replace him with Jose Iglesias.
AL34
Good you think that every prospect is going to make it. Years ago the Yankees hyped their prospects that way teams would trade established players for them. I remember the Henry Cottos, Bam Bam Muelins, Paul Mirabella, Sam Militello, Kevin Mass, Rupert Jones.
More prospects bomb than make it. You keep some and trade some for established ball players who can help your team. Even the Sale trade Look at the prospects, Moncado is okay not great and Kopesch was supposed to be a superstar starter is pitching out of the bullpen. Live in the present my friend, this team is bad and if you want help you trade some guys instead of using the train back and forth to Worcester every day.
Unless Bloom makes a deal this team is nowhere on the level of the Yankees

I agree Dombroski was responsible for Sale but Bloom depended on him this year. He has been hurt now for 4 years and missed clumps of the last 4 seasons.
Wasting 11 million on Paxton this year when the money could have been used more wisely. He might not make it back.
Loosing Schwarber was another mistake and depending on streaky no hit Dalbac was a big mistake.
I would never have given Barnes the money on a two year contract Bloom gave him. They have gotten nothing out of him since the second half of last year.
They were using Robles as a closer last year too and he was shakey as hell in that role. He cost them 6 blown save games this year. If he had picked up a solid reliever last year they would have finished off Houston and been in the World Series. He depended on Garrett Whitlock and Martin Perez last year.
I don’t know if Casas is going to make it this year or ever. Schwarber was an established ball player over a prospect whether highly regarded or not.
Bloom lays back too often and does not make the deals he should. The Yankees picked up Rizzo last year for not much. Where was Bloom on that. Yeah finally he picked up Schwarber.
I think he takes that bargain basement attitude looking for a designer dress in Filene’s Basement too much. He has a Tampa Bay Bargain Rays in a no market Tampa in high market Boston.
Give me someone in between Dave Dombroski and Chaim Bloom.
oot
Pitching, especially relief pitching, is the team’s biggest problem this season:
2021 – Starters:: 50W 47L Relievers: 42W 23L /49Sv 27BSv
2022 – Starters: 27W 26L Relievers: 21W 19L /19Sv 21BSv
Cooperdooper7
I love Bogey…. but this week alone his defense on at least 3 or four occasions has cost them runs and ultimately games… Its not blatant errors, but it’s not making plays on balls in the hole( Tampa 6th inning last Tuesday Harold Ramirez grounder — perfect example of not making a play that should been made). Botching a DP ball that they only get 1 out instead of two. If they bring him back… he needs to play 3B. Move Devers to 1st (The majority of all his errors are throwing). Keep Story at second and bring in a defensive short stop until Marcelo Mayer is ready. They can let Jeter Downs play a bunch in the second half to see if he can cut it. They need to trade JD at the deadline as well as Kiki. Then they should throw a boat load of cash on the Table for Judge (just to drive up the price) and sign Raffy to a 8 year deal for around 256 mill.. (32..5 mill per season).
KyleT
Agree Cooper, well said. Although Devers seems to be improving at 3B. Last year, I wouldve said ‘he needs to move’ as well. But, this year he’s made some nice plays. Time will tell though, he’s only shown this improvement for a half season, while he’s been terrible for better than 5 seasons.
Ignorant Son-of-a-b
Boston has no excuse not to wrap up Devers. Unless they’re going all in for Soto or something.
AL34
Thank you for your comment on my service. I agree completely. They need to lock up Devers and Boggarts and they have the money to do that.
AL34
I doubt Bloom does anything with Soto. He reminds me of Dan Duquette years ago. He was in on everything but did little until he signed Manny Ramirez in 2001. Although he fleeced Montreal for Pedro Martinez for Brian Rose and Carl Pavano. He was embarrassed by the Yankees who picked up Mike Mussina. Can you imagine Mike Mussina and Pedro Martinez in the same rotation back then.
