The Cardinals announced a series of roster moves prior to today’s game, activating left-hander T.J. McFarland from the COVID IL. To create space on the active roster, fellow lefty Zack Thompson was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. To open a spot on the 40-man roster, righty Jack Flaherty was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Flaherty began the year on the IL due to shoulder bursitis, returning just under a month ago. However, after three truncated appearances, he returned to the IL due to continued shoulder issues. It was subsequently announced that he would be shut down from throwing for 2-3 weeks as the club tries to return him to health.
Given today’s transfer, Flaherty will be unable to return until 60 days from his June 27 IL placement, meaning he’s now out until late August. With a weeks-long shutdown, it was going to be difficult for him to get back before than in any event, unless the club considered bringing him back as a reliever, as that course of action would require less of a ramp-up period after the shutdown. However, manager Oli Marmol says they still want to build him up as a starter, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat.
Flaherty pitched at an ace-like level in 2019, throwing 196 1/3 innings with a 2.75 ERA. However, he slumped a bit in 2020 and then has been derailed by injuries in the past couple of seasons. He and the Cardinals will surely be hoping for this rest period to allow him to come back and salvage some of his season, giving a boost to the club down the stretch.
Shocker! This guy can’t stay healthy.
Flaherty ——- the Cardinals Fans might as well accept it. They will never see the dominant Jack Flaherty in a Cardinals uniform. Even if he were healthy (which he probably is), when he hits free agency—- he’s outta St. Louis!!! He’s basically said that already!!!
17dizzy, you’re accusing him of pretending to be injured? Based on what?
Also…in before someone complains about him supporting blacks or the gay community.
You still think BLM supports blacks. Hahaha
Racists spend their time bashing on BLM.
Flaherty will go to another team & be a fully healthy ace…
i’d say he should come home and play for the Dodgers, but that uniform GUARANTEES you’ll hit the IL…
the worse your history, the longer the stays.
I am one of many Cubs fans who would love to see him in a Cubs uni. I totally agree with you.
Poor jumpin Jack Flaherty can’t catch a break
One of the better arms in the game
What game have you been watching? He’s good but not one of the best.
This is going to hurt his big payday.
Maybe he should focus on his health instead of spewing hate for those that don’t push his political agenda.
The money is the only thing he truly cares about and now the approach to acquire it that he has taken comes back to bite him. Rather than learning a lesson and moving forward he will most likely blame those around him and sulk.
What are you talking about? He’s a democrat?
According to his wiki article Flaherty was adopted when he was three weeks old, is a Christian, is biracial, identifies as black, and has been actively involved in supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
This shows just how irrational, superficial, and illogical such a worldview is. First, who cares what someone’s skin color is; it’s a superficial consideration. Second, if someone has both “white” and “black” in their parents’ (or elsewhere) in their familial line, then they are BOTH “black” and “white”. Lastly, like Flaherty I am Christian and of mixed skin color (Hispanic and Irish). I don’t “identify” as either brown or white. I identify as a Christian man, period. My skin color is meaningless.
The first thing to understand in this discussion is that there is only one race—the human race. Caucasians, Africans, Asians, Indians, Arabs, and Jews are not different races. Rather, they are different ethnicities of the human race. All human beings have the same physical characteristics (with minor variations, of course). More importantly, all human beings are equally created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). God loved the world so much that He sent Jesus to lay down His life for us (John 3:16). The “world” obviously includes all ethnic groups.
What an utterly stupid comment.
McFarland in place of Thompson?? They’ve gotta be kidding!!!
Mcfarland gets another shot while Thompson gets regular work at Memphis. Mcfarland gets DFA before August 15th IMO.
Yes, Four, 100% correct.
Flaherty is a very joyless individual who cannot see beyond his personal political agenda. Not everything in the world is doom and gloom, yet people like him equate a lack of social perfection to there being no room for happiness.
And why do you care?
And you know that he can’t see beyond his supposed personal political agenda how? Did your sister date him?
The abolition of women’s rights, threat of autocracy, authoritarian anti-voting measures in red states, book banning, widespread mass shootings… yeah, what a cheery place
I haven’t heard about this. Can you elaborate on what you’ve claimed is occuring?
At this point, Jack is counting down the days he can sign with his hometown Dodgers in free agency
want all our boys to come home, but a Dodger uniform will only make the IL stays worse. It’s our achilles heel… next to lefty pitchers. That’s on the other heel.
Keeping it in pants tends to be another issue more recently
Or perhaps the Cubs so that he can stick it to the Cardinals on a regular basis.
This definitely means Cardinals are going after a starter!!
As a cardinal fan, lets hope the reds will trade with us.
omg…Reds will get 29 offers. why would they help cards? let that one go.
I’m a Cardinal fan…but the Reds are NOT gonna do that deal.
If he is trying to improve his stock, he is going about it all wrong. Just schedule surgery for him, or whatever needs to be done and bite the bullet and get it over with and stop babying him.
imagine the haul its going to take to get Castillo? he’s clearly the best starter available, an all star, and other starting candidates are banged up. someone will over-pay. im guessing the Yankees.
jack needs a new start, in a liberal state
Who cares what his political beliefs are. My god people you all need to find Jesus. Not everything is republican vs dems.
They did find Jesus and that’s the problem. (Clarification: Jesus is cool. It’s the people running his churches in this Country that are the cancer)
Don’s Ghost – Based upon my understanding of the New Testament, which I have read in its’ entirety over a dozen times, I doubt Jesus would believe you calling him “cool” is a compliment. Jesus Christ is many things (e.g. Savior, the good Shepherd, , but in our increasingly secular culture Jesus is decidedly “uncool”.
It is also hateful and counterproductive to say “It’s the people running his churches in this Country that are the cancer”. Such a sweeping statement denigrates all pastors, especially those who genuinely and faithfully serve the Lord and further His Great Commission.
best to live in a state where most of the morons believe the same way he does
I think Utah and Idaho have the most Mormons!
Get your shoulder cut on now, HOPE for the best, rehab for a year, take a one-year pillow deal with the Cardinals (my team), go to the Dodgers.
The End.
I believe the Reds traded Jeff Brantley to the Cards for Dmitri Young
He has already lost millions in potential free agent money and could stand to lose hundreds of millions If he can’t get back and establish himself for an extended period. If he is making a stand against the Cardinals at that cost I applaud his fortitude! Who cares what his political views are? Unless he is harming others just ignore it and hope he gets back to throwing a baseball well(the only reason he is noteworthy enough to have anyone know his views).
Flaherty was one dominant pitcher when he was healthy. What is it now? The hardest throwers break down. Jacob deGrom lasted a little longer than Flaherty at his best, yet it has been a long time on the shelf. You wonder that if they can live and succeed at 2 Mph less on their fastball and mix in some other pitches, maybe they’d stay healthy. Max Scherzer pitched at 94-95-96 with fastballs but with other offerings at 84-85-86 yesterday and had the Braves befuddled. And he’s got A LOT of miles on his arm. Yes, even he took some time on the IL, but not the two month or more kind.
Maybe these guys are just too muscular? Didn’t Flaherty go on the IL for an oblique strain swinging a bat? A little yoga could help. At least he doesn’t have to bat anymore.
weight training was once frowned upon
