Frankie Montas has been the name most attached to the Cardinals in their pitching search, yet St. Louis has also been exploring other rotation options. The Cards and Astros have discussed the possibility of a trade involving veteran righty Jake Odorizzi, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. In addition, such names as Noah Syndergaard and Nathan Eovaldi were “at least discussed internally” by the Cardinals’ front office as possible targets.
Odorizzi has been on the Cards’ radar for some time, as the club considered signing the right-hander as a free agent during the 2020-21 offseason. Instead, Odorizzi signed a two-year deal with Houston worth $23.25MM in guaranteed money, with the 2023 season also covered via a $6.25MM player option with a $3.25MM buyout. A variety of injuries have limited Odorizzi to 157 2/3 innings over his two years with the Astros, but he has posted a 4.22 ERA despite only a 19.5% strikeout rate. The righty has relied on above-average walk rates and (in 2022) an outstanding hard-contact rate to retire batters.
Acquiring Odorizzi would have some echoes of the Cards’ deadline moves last year, when they landed veterans Jon Lester, J.A. Happ, and Wade LeBlanc in the wake of several rotation injuries. Odorizzi at least has much better bottom-line results than that trio did when St. Louis swung those trades, and yet the Cardinals’ hope in a turn-around was rewarded, as all three pitched well and helped the Cards reach the wild card game.
St. Louis fans weren’t overly impressed with the club’s strategy at last year’s deadline, and given all the other big names linked to the Cards in trade rumors this summer, landing “only” Odorizzi to address the rotation could be again seen as underwhelming. However, since the A’s are known to be asking for a ton for Montas and surely the Angels and Red Sox would want a good return even for rentals like Syndergaard or Eovaldi, Odorizzi could be a decent Plan C-type of option if the Cards feel the other asking prices are too high…..or, if the Cardinals direct their prospect capital towards acquiring someone like Juan Soto.
It is also possible that the Cardinals could land more than one of these pitchers, as the club has an increasingly acute need for rotation depth. Beyond Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Andre Pallante, Dakota Hudson (activated off the 15-day injured list today) and Matthew Liberatore comprise the current starting five, as Jack Flaherty is still weeks away from returning from shoulder problems.
Steven Matz was supposed to provide some help when he returned from his own IL stint last week, except the left-hander tore his MCL in his return start. It isn’t known yet if Matz will need surgery, yet President of baseball operations John Mozeliak told Goold and other reporters today that there is only a “sliver” of a chance Matz pitches again in 2022, and it will be “very, very difficult to get him back this year.”
Turning to the Astros’ situation, trading Odorizzi would seem like an unusual move for a World Series contender that theoretically would want as much pitching depth as possible for a deep run through October. However, the Astros could feel they have such depth already, with a six-man rotation on the active roster, Lance McCullers Jr. on his way back from the 60-day IL, and some other young arms in reserve in the minors.
To that end, Houston has reportedly been willing to discuss trades of controllable pitchers with other teams. Odorizzi doesn’t exactly fit that description, of course, but it would seem like the Astros would be a lot more open to moving a veteran rather than a longer-term rotation piece like Cristian Javier or Jose Urquidy.

Well it is good to see that the Cardinals were able to hack into the Astros roster again FINALLY.

Please God, Cards take Odorizzi off our hands and out of our minds. Nothing really against the guy, but I’d much rather move him than Urquidy.

It will be beyond sickening if Matz’s injury keeps us from getting Soto. Seems very likely at this point.

Was trading for Goldy and Arenado boring? I choose to trust that they know what they’re doing.

One thing I cannot understand about the Cardinals? They need starting pitching and they have a lefty named Cabrera who was a starter for his entire minor league career yet they try Jordan Hicks in a starter role first? This organization has some major flaws recently, Hard to stomach.
allweatherfan
Jordan Hicks was a starter in his entire (but short) minor league career.
Deadguy
Hicks was also coming back from Tommy John and Cabrera was healthy but let’s throw Jordan into the starter role? Idk? I don’t see the problem with starting Cabrera? You signed Drew Verhagen to start but since he can’t let him be your lefty? Throw the new guy you just traded for in another questionable trade (Jojo Romero *also coming back from Tommy john for 3.8 WAR Edmundo Sosa) into the bullpen? Do something other than sitting on your hands and let the starting pitching SINK your season for the second year in a row cause you thought signing one player made of glass (Matz) was gonna fix you trading away your pitching depth in January of 2018…
baseballnamescanbehard
Drew Verhagen is a right handed pitcher.
619bird
Jake Woodford got screwed. He may not be more than a 4 or 5 but the Cardinals decided that Hicks was the answer and were wrong. Jake has been shuffled to bullpen, minors stretched to starter, bullpen filler to minors now being stretched to start.
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Jake Woodford is yet to be a 4 or 5. He may get there. I think he has a shot, but he’s not there yet.
baseballnamescanbehard
Agree. They have wronged that dude. He has been nothing but decent and for some reason since Oli took over they won’t even give him a shot. Something is up there.
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Cabrera can’t throw strikes and Hicks can’t stay healthy.
They have starter stuff, but having those issues will keep you out of the rotation.
Do you actually watch this team?
clubber_lang84
Do the cards have a backup catcher that can part with?
Ol’ Uncle Charlie
Not really. There are two guys vying for the job after Yadi leaves, so they’re both going to get a good, long look next year.

tbone0816
Dumpster diving and being cheap again go figure!!
gwspaulds
Yep, it’s what they do and I’m so sick of it. They just settle for a pretty good team every year. Mozeliak says the same thing at the deadline, we just need to play better and get healthy. True statement but we also need an impact player at the deadline often and he never delivers. I wish he’d realize you can still give up a top prospect and continue to be a competitive team going forward. Plus we don’t have room for Gorman, Edman, Donavan, Yepez, Walker, Winn, Oniell, Bader, Carlson.
I’d like to know where they’re all going to play.
Hate to say this but if I’m Arenado I’m walking and it’s all because of the front office.
FrontOfficeStan
Winn isn’t coming until late 2023, probably in 2024. Walker still hasn’t played a game higher than AA, still not coming until later 2023 is my guess but the projection is 2024.. Albert + Dickerson gone next year. Bader FA in 2024. They will very easily have a place to play.
Bigger problem is that it isn’t just one move they need to make. They don’t need one impact player, they need multiple.
eephus11
They try to manage their roster as opposed to going all in to win one or two years against the odds. They don’t have 6-7 years of tanking like many teams. I have seen a few questionable things no doubt but I appreciate seeing meaningful baseball every single year.
Daze Work
He’s from the Lou, would be nice to see in that regard. They won’t be the type to spend a lot on Montas.

stroh
Odorizzi is a decent #5 starter, and when he pitches well he seems like he could be a #3. When he doesn’t pitch well, he’s not very good. He’s the Stros #6 starter ( Verlander, Valdez, Javier, Garcia and Urquidy are in front of him) and when McCullers gets back there will be no spot in the rotation for him. Having said that, he is a starter and better than what I’ve seen many teams roll out. The Stros may package him and a prospect or two for a center fielder, first baseman or catcher.
formerlyz
Pablo Lopez and 1 of Bass/Okert/Bleier/Floro for Gorman, Carlson, Burleson, Graceffo, and a lower level pitching prospect
Cardsfanatik redux
nope. not at all. you just traded 22% of your offense for a guy that plays every 5th day, and possibly one of a couple 35 year olds that throw 50 innings a year. I’m glad you’re not in charge. but you’re probably a marlins fan.
formerlyz
So as a Cardinals fan, if they were to try to trade for Lopez, who has 2.5 years of control remaining, what would you give up? Also, what about if the Marlins were to include 1 of Miguel Rojas or Joey Wendle, both controlled past this season, for another lower level prospect included/maybe a future bullpen arm that might be up some point next year or in 2024? Edmond still swaps between 2b/SS, wendle gives you some of that offense back at 3b/2b/LF, or Rojas as an option at SS, which they’ve been trying to figure something out with?
Or maybe you prefer a lesser option. No hig deal. I dont get the vitriol about a simple suggestion/question when I’ve seen people say they wanted to trade for a pitcher like Pablo Lopez, or someone of similar ilk…

Great Jake Westbrook 2022. Got to give it to Mo, he will has patience and will get his man crushes on his team eventually.
meangreandancingmachine
We pivot from Juan Soto and the Brave Lopez to more dumpster diving by Mo. The last thing the Card’s rotation needs is a 32-year-old with a history of injuries. That’s 3/4 of the Card’s staff already. Doesn’t make any sense. Why not just bring up Liberatore and keep him in the rotation for the rest of the year as the No. 5?This team needs an ace, not another No. 5 pitcher.

Unclenolanrules
Please, someone take him. It isn’t just his struggles. He had a good run early in the season. Last year he seemed to have a kind of bad attitude in some interviews.
Good riddance.
Theoretically we have Verlander, Framber, Garcia, and Javier for a playoff run. McCullers I would rather see used as a hybrid reliever for the balance of the season. Some spot starts as an opener, high leverage long relief, late inning/high leverage relief, and a stopper for the last two innings, that type of thing. He could eat some of the innings for the other starters by opening or tandem rotation type of thing, soak some innings off Javier, Garcia, and Verlander to give them some rest and save their arms for the proverbial playoff run. JV had TJ surgery, Javier and Garcia are pitching more innings this season than they have before (I think).
There is no immediate need for McCullers in the rotation. Urquidy is a sold pitcher and could occupy a long relief role in the playoffs leaving McCullers to be part of a possibly scary bullpen. McCullers can come back to the rotation next year and consequently, have a rested arm coming off an injury year. Just a thought.
GangGreen23
A’s fan here. How is Cards prospect Alec Burleson on defense? His bat looks outstanding but the body type looks Kyle Schwarber-ish. Can he play D in the outfield or are we talking a DH type here?
I could see Beane doing Mo a solid after sending us Piscotty, though that trade has been awful for the A’s. Piscotty has been either Injured or awful ( in the few times he has been healthy.).
Montas is legit guys. He’ll more than help u down the stretch.
FrontOfficeStan
They’re trying to play him in the OF but even in college he lacked range. Was mostly pitcher and first base. He will be more of a DH type imo. Good bat though, really excited to watch him in the future.
baseballnamescanbehard
I honestly don’t know how his glove is. It is odd that they haven’t called him up at all. Either they don’t think he is the real deal or they don’t want to start his clock yet.
FrontOfficeStan
Because we have enough depth at DH. Need more range in CF to cover for his lack of range. Maybe when Bader is back but then there’s less need.
eatonculo
Burleson is a decent corner outfielder. He’s much better than Schwarber with a glove.
As a Cardinals fan, I wouldn’t mind seeing him in left field everyday.
GarryHarris
Working in a MLB front office and trying to keep track of all the trade propositions and other teams’ entire system must be dizzying.

It is but I’m handling it well. Thank you for realizing our struggles.

Imagine if baseball had a salary cap to keep up with on top of that, too.
Champs64
So true. And they think their life is difficult now.
Bigpoppapuff_34
Mo needs to package Winn + 2 of our prospects rated 20-30, for Odorizzi and then sign Brian Goodwin and Jankowski.. If we could just find 1 more starter other than Odorizzi, we’d be set
GarryHarris
Masyn Winn looks like a good SS prospect. I don’t think Jake Odorizzi and his contract + buy-out are worth Winn. Its questionable Jake can help the Cards before hitting the IL 3-6 more times this year. Travis Jankowski is batting .167 and Brian Goodwin is having a poor year in Independent League.
Bigpoppapuff_34
Imagine saying that and 5hrs later the dude goes 7 shutout innings giving up 2hits and striking out 8… Good Call lol

The Astros should definitely dump Odorizzi if given the chance. They should take almost anything offered in exchange. He has been the weak spot in the rotation since he arrived. He’s not all that bad but he’s not up to the caliber of their other options. You never want to say you have a surplus of pitching, but right now the Astros are looking at having seven viable starter options.
stroh
I disagree they should take almost anything in return. Most of the starters out there are worse than him. He just seems not great to Stros fans because we have 5 guys who’s ERAs are in the 3s or below ahead of him and McCullers coming back. There are a number of pitching starved teams that could use him, so no reason to give him away.
BPrice's 77 F-Bombs
Should be interested in Tyler Mahle
eephus11
This is fine as long as they get him for next to nothing in return. They need to get someone better along with him though(Montas). beyond that if they do nothing and hold onto prospects I’d be ok with it.
stroh
I don’t think that will happen. He’s a pitcher who has had an ERA around 4 runs in each of the last two years and is a starter. I would say he is league average, and considering the number of bad starters out there the trade would demand some decent return.
OrangeCrushCity
Odorizzi doesn’t seem happy with the way he’s been used as an Astro. He’s had a few really great starts, and a few pretty bad ones. Overall a pretty solid 4-5 for somebody who doesn’t have the starter depth the Astros have. Might be best for him and the team if they can find a trade partner. No sense giving away depth for nothing though.
JoeBrady
Odorizzi was great before he got injured. Even since the return, with a bad ERA, he still has a 17/3 K/W in 21.1 IPs. I’m wondering if facing Oakland 3 straight times might have impacted the ERA.
stroh
I doubt it. He shut out the As for 7 innings, then he had a shutout into the 6th inning and he threw away a double play ball which led to their scoring three runs. And the next start he was pitching a shutout in the 4th when he developed a blister and gave up HRs to a couple of As. More bad luck than not pitching well.
JoeBrady
I think Eovaldi to the Cards is a perfect match. Better than Odorizzi (if healthy), a playoff winner, and less expensive than the top-tier guys.
stroh
I agree. However he will cost a lot more in draft cspital.
bcjd
I read in the Globe that Eovaldi probably isn’t available. It seems Bloom is trying to have it both ways—sell to invest in the future, while still trying to compete for a playoff berth in 2022. To do that Eovaldi has to stay , unless major rotation help is found elsewhere.

Price of Odorizzi just went up. Pitched 7 shutout innings vs Mariners today, with 8 strikeouts, arguably his best game this year. His ERA is now 3.75.

Please No. Not Odorizzi.
Jarrod Vanatta
Odorizzi is an average SP, but definitely not someone who will help the Cards get over the top and make a deep run into the playoffs. I mean if they were looking at him as a #4-5 SP for the rest of the year and into next, that is not horrible but definitely don’t overpay for him.
