TODAY: Sadzeck has elected to become a free agent, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports (Twitter link). The right-hander had cleared waivers and been outrighted to the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate.
JULY 25: The Brewers announced Monday that they’ve designated righty Connor Sadzeck for assignment and recalled pitching prospect Ethan Small from Triple-A Nashville in his place. Small will likely get the nod to start Tuesday’s game, which had been listed as a “TBD” by the Brewers.
Sadzeck, 30, appeared in two games with the Brewers and yielded three runs in three innings of relief work prior to today’s DFA. He posted big numbers in Nashville, logging a 0.86 ERA and 30.7% strikeout rate against a 10.5% walk rate in 28 innings, but his once 97.1 mph heater averaged a diminished 94.9 mph in his limited work with Milwaukee. Sadzeck has long been an intriguing arm thanks to his velocity and ability to miss bats, but control issues and injuries have continually plagued him throughout his professional career. The Brewers will have a week to trade him, release him or attempt to pass him through outright waivers.
Small, the No. 28 overall pick back in 2019, will make just his second career start if and when he takes the ball tomorrow. He was tagged for three runs through 2 2/3 innings in his MLB debut earlier this season but has recorded a strong 3.34 ERA and 26.4% strikeout rate in 72 2/3 Triple-A innings this year. Command has been the big knock on Small for much of his professional career, and this year’s 13% walk rate in Triple-A hasn’t allayed those concerns. However, Small still profiles as a potential fourth starter, with scouting reports at Baseball America, FanGraphs and MLB.com praising his solid fastball and plus changeup.

It’s about time now once they trade Wong and two of the catchers they need to bring up Turang, Reetz, Mitchell and Weimer. Then just see what happens with the young guys. I think that hunger these young guys infused would surprise people.
estevesj
Yeah blow up the first place team cuz you want to play MLB The Show franchise mode. Lol get real
Milwaukee-2208
Why are we trading 2 of our catchers? Why are we bringing up rookies to be the centerpiece of a division run? We are 3-0 out of the break and hitting really well right now. If anything, they will add a bat like Bell, Mancini, Cruz, or Benintendi. I’m sure they’ll add more arms too.
We aren’t just going to call up 4 kids and give them a crash course into the majors in August
Jeremy320
Have you been drinking?
stubby66
Nope just enjoying passing you guys off so you can complain. You guys wanna make big trades on a year I don’t believe we can win it. I would rather save a bunch of money now so we can keep Burnes and Woodruff on extensions then have a great team when these 4 peak in a year and a half
craig500
It goes back to you playing MLB the Show. Who cares what anybody on here wants to do, Stearns has zero chance of doing what you are suggesting.
Milwaukee-2208
What’s up with you and Turang? You keep talking about him like he’s the next coming of Babe Ruth or something.
stubby66
Because he is ready for the majors and can do the exact same thing as Wong for less then a million bucks so get rid of Wong for something. It has also already been said by Mark that he feels that we can get more from trading guys from the Major league roster. There has already been a lot of talk of the Brewers shopping Narvaez, Wong, and Severino. Guys we have replacements waiting in the wings. Get wild card prospects for them plus that saves us about 12 million we can use for extensions. At the end of the year we will have a total of 20 million going into next year for extensions which both Woodruff and Burnes said they are open too.
MannyPineappleExpress9
Being “open” to an extension is a ways from being willing to sign what will almost certainly be a low offer relative to what the big money clubs can spend.
I’m not sure what exactly they can get for the 3 you mentioned. I believe all are free agents at years end, so teams aren’t going to line up to bid on their services. Especially Severino who is ineligible for postseason play. He’s 1 guy that makes sense to cut ties with, but I don’t see anyone wanting him at all, unless they trade their established catcher.
stubby66
I get what people think but I just believe that giving them important time and at bats makes us a stronger team for the next 2 to 3 years of winning it then what we could possibly have then our chances this year.
andyr
Turang may very well be an upgrade over Wong, but Mitchell and Wiemer aren’t ready, and Reetz? An offensive first catcher who isn’t even good at offense? Yeah he’s not getting a call unless every catcher in the system gets Covid.
kcmark
Weimer is going to KC as part of the Benintendi trade package
MannyPineappleExpress9
Wong is scorching the ball right now. Yeah it’s a down year defensively but he’s still better than Urias on both sides of the ball.
I don’t get trading 2 catchers either. If your logic is ‘because we won’t win it this year’ then they should have sold every single year including 2011.
Oh, and the way Burnes is pitching there’s almost no chance of an extension. So maybe he’s the one they should be looking to trade.
mustache101
This comment is all wrong… for starters I love that small has been called up but Craig will only allow him to go thru the lineup twice (as he should with a young pitcher) so your only going to get 3-5 innings on his start depending on how his command is as it’s shaky…. Turang will not be called up he’s trade bait they don’t want him exposed at the mlb level lowering his value… reetz yah that is not happening feliciono would get the call he’s on the 40…. Mitchell is a) not ready b) not on the 40 and c) just got off the il and wiemer where do I start with him… again not on the 40 and strikes out a TON.. he’s got power yes but a k rate like that in AA… and you want him to skip AAA? His k rate could hit 50% in the
bigs right now… don’t get me wrong I like him as a prospect but that’s asking a lot…. Plus who are you removing from the 40 to add these guys… I think turang is the only one of your selections on the 40…
mustache101
I’m a big crew fan what they need to do in my opinion…. Add bell a rental won’t cost a ton.. add benitedenti ( sorry I’m not a a speller) another rental should be cheap… add an arm to the pen for cheap and your set you got your bats and a reliever without giving up much… and get Freddy back and use him out of the pen… you go into the playoffs with burns woody then a piggy back of laur and Freddy with that back end of the bullpen we would be dangerous
MannyPineappleExpress9
@mustache are you suggesting the Crew use a 3 man rotation in the playoffs (Burnes, Woody, Lauer/Peralta)? Don’t teams generally use 4 starters..?
mustache101
Yes I guess I am… but our starters don’t have high innings they have run a 6 man rotation most of the year and I really like Freddy out of the pen in the playoffs that’s deadly fun
mustache101
Plus cousins just got sent out for a rehab… the bullpen may be getting help soon
mustache101
Your going to have off days in October it’s not abnormal to run only 3 starters plus then you got Ashby out of the pen and maybe cousins comes back plus houser in the pen I like it
MannyPineappleExpress9
So you don’t believe Ashby can start a playoff game and maybe go 4-5 innings? I get the Houser thing..but maybe he’ll turn it around when he gets back from the injury.
brewsingblue82
Bruh. Save money to extend Burnes AND Woodruff? They’d better find a taker for Yelich who will take on ALL of his money, trade Wong, trade Hader and anyone else who’s making near 10 mil a year for that matter and not plan to spend hardly anything on anyone else. Even just expecting them to extend just one of Burnes or Woodruff, you’re likely setting yourself up for disappointment. The kind of money Burnes is going to command coming off a cy young year, while being solid in the running for another, if he keeps it up, he’s as good as gone. Burnes is going to be likely around 30 mil a year if he keeps going at his pace. Woodruff could easily command 20 per year if he keeps it up. We’re going to just enjoy this rotation while we can, because it’s highly doubtful we extend Burnes, Woodruff or Hader.
fisher40
How are those 4 rookies going to help us with the tight division race? More than likely they’d struggle. Terrible take on your part
fisher40
Terrible, Terrible take on your assessment
VirginiaGiant
Farhan Zaidi is on line 1.
More dumpster diving
knolln
It’s taking a chance… on a huge weapon that’s never really failed. Has no business anymore at any minor league level. Jealous of whoever he tags along with
differentbears
Man, if I was DFA’d today, I’d feel like a Sadzeck too.
nitnontu
Poor guy must get teased about his name every time he doesn’t pitch well!
Louholtz22
Unless the Brewers are going to miss the playoffs on Burns last year, they will keep him and get the draft picks. They’re not going to pass on a shot at winning it all. He’s too good. Small market teams can’t compete with salaries which sucks.
MannyPineappleExpress9
Checking back every hour today looking for some tidbit of trade news..even if it’s a no-chance rumor…
And all I get is sadzeck opting free agency. Total bummer man.
knolln
I would bet Connor can shove. Woulda thought the rangers were desperate enough, especially after watching him develop. The Mariners and brewers weren’t. I think he’s an 8th inning guy and someone will pay for it
D24
If I’m the Nats, I’m only trading Soto if it’s part of a 3-team deal. I don’t want a ton of prospects from one team, I want the top 2 or 3 from two different teams. Those trades take awake to come together though, and would be more likely to happen in the off-season.
