The Braves have been without Ozzie Albies for a month, as the star second baseman fractured his left foot on June 13. Atlanta immediately placed him on the 60-day injured list, and he underwent surgery a few days later. The club maintained they expected him to play again this season, but they didn’t provide an estimated return date beyond ruling him out for two-plus months.
It seems Atlanta’s hopeful Albies can return around when he’s first eligible. President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos tells Jeff Schultz of the Athletic the club is “probably looking at mid- to late-August or worst case the beginning of September” for Albies’ return. The two-time All-Star has progressed to 75% weight bearing on the foot, according to the Atlanta president.
Second base has been a major problem for the Braves since Albies went down. Atlanta has gotten a meager .232/.287/.303 showing in 108 plate appearances at the position over the past month. The bulk of that time has gone to utilityman Orlando Arcia, with Phil Gosselin (who has since been designated for assignment) also chipping in. Arcia’s and Gosselin’s struggles reached the point the Braves swung a deal for Robinson Canó and added the veteran to the major league roster on Monday.
Adding Canó shouldn’t prevent Anthopoulos from seeking further upgrades at the position. The veteran had been hitting well in Triple-A but struggled enough with both the Mets and Padres in the big leagues he was released from both clubs. Atlanta’s acquisition cost for Canó was marginal — they sent cash considerations to San Diego in return — and the Braves figure to be willing to move on quickly if he struggles again. However, the possibility of welcoming Albies back four-to-six weeks from now could diminish the urgency to add infield talent closer to the deadline.
That’s particularly true given how thin this summer’s infield trade market appears to be. Of MLBTR’s top 50 trade candidates, only three (Brandon Drury, Whit Merrifield and Donovan Solano) are capable of playing second base. Players like César Hernández and Tony Kemp would be available stopgap options but didn’t make MLBTR’s list amidst arguably career-worst years.
Asked generally about the possibility of upgrading before the deadline, Anthopoulos suggested the club had yet to narrow down specific target areas. He expressed confidence in the club’s overall depth and told Schultz they’re prepared to cast a wider net than last season, when the front office responded to Ronald Acuña Jr.’s season-ending injury by striking two weeks early to acquire Joc Pederson from the Cubs. “It’s very different than last year. We’ve had injuries this year, but we have a lot of depth,” Anthopoulos told Schultz. “I would say right now it’s critical to watch the team and obviously our health. It might be one of those things where we don’t have a true glaring area, but we definitely have areas where we can improve. Because once the deadline (passes), we can’t add. But we’re not there yet. We haven’t made any decisions.”
The Braves are also expecting a return from reliever Kirby Yates a few weeks down the line. The 2019 All-Star has barely pitched over the past two and a half seasons. He missed most of the shortened 2020 campaign battling elbow issues, then underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2021 that wiped out all of last year. The right-hander signed a two-year deal over the winter with an eye on a midseason comeback, and a return to the big leagues is getting closer into view.
Yates is set to begin a rehab assignment at the club’s Florida complex on Saturday, tweets Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Pitchers are typically allowed up to 30 days on rehab stints, but that window can be (and often is) extended for players working back from TJS. Anthopoulos told Schultz that Yates’ progress over the next couple weeks could factor into whether they feel a need to add another right-hander to the bullpen via trade. During his last healthy season, Yates tossed 60 2/3 innings of 1.19 ERA ball for the 2019 Padres, leading the majors with 41 saves.

Season’s over for Albies. Pour one out for him!
…and pour one out for the rest of the Braves roster for their sad, discombobulated showing against the Mets.

Braves Butt-Head
Lets see the Braves lost a series 2 out of 3 games and basically Scherzer being a hall of famer and playing like it was why they won game 1. I mean they are both close and it is coming down to a few plays and who makes those plays.

Are you talking about the Braves? The team with the 5th easiest schedule in all of baseball to date? Naw, you couldn’t be.

Strength of schedule means nothing because it constantly changes. Edit: Maybe at the end of the year when you have the benefit of hindsight. But at that point who really cares?

So the Braves lost to a team that made better plays when it mattered?

It’s one series in July. Not really that big of a deal compared to diamonds in a world championship ring. Tough being a Mets fans huh? How many divisional rivals have you seen win a ring since 86???
atlbraves
Oh ? So the season is done because they lost 2 of 3 in July ? So if any other team does that, does the same hold true ?
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Don’t mute the illegitimate child of Metsfan, it’s too amusing to watch his imbecilic posts. The Mets lead the Braves 4-3 this year so far, but the Braves have outscored the Mets 26 to 24. Braves are the hottest team in BB, and @You Can Put It In The Books, is terrified the Mets will repeat their colossal failure of last year. I’ve always liked the Mets (since I’m from NY), but when irrational posts come out, stamp the BS out.

1. Albies is the best all-around 2B in MLB when healthy. (This will particularly show in 2023 when the shifts go away.)
2. It’s July 14. No one has any idea what the rosters of contending teams will be come the stretch run in late August and September……nor how healthy players on those rosters will be.
3. The Braves players, their coaches and manager seem to be very good at being able to peak during the stretch run and then in the playoffs. Championships aren’t won in July.
You Can Put It In The Books
1. Hilarious.
2. No one disputed this.
3. Nobody suggested this.

I’m a Braves fan and love Albies, but if a player needs a rule change to elevate their game, then they aren’t an all-around player. Albies is not a complete player and everyone should know that. I feel like I’ve said this on multiple articles defending him, and now I’m using it to tamp down an assessment, weird stuff.
Samuel
I didn’t say that Albies needed a rule change to elevate his game.
I don’t know how anyone could construe that when the rule change outlawing shifts means 2B’s will no longer have the SS to help them cover ground.
As for what I’ve seen of Albies, as is necessary for all middle infielders he’s both quick and fast. He has decent hands. Covers a nice amount of ground. Doesn’t have a SS’s arm – which is why he’s at 2B – but does make plays there.
When he hits 1 or 2 in the line-up and gets good pitches to hit he’s extremely productive for a middle infielder. Once on base he uses his speed both to move around the bases and get more fastballs for the big hitters behind him. But with Acuna Jr. needing to hit lead-off he’s been dropped in the order and that’s taken away from what he can do offensively for the team.
When I’ve seen him play he shows awareness on the field and seems to have a nice Baseball IQ. He’s still young (25) and lacks consistency. Expect that will come – he’s had time to think about things being out injured for so long. He’s a spark for that team and it’s hard for me to believe that anyone that watches the Braves play hasn’t seen that.
You Can Put It In The Books
But he’s not the best 2B in the league. Thanks for all the words though.
NashvilleJeff

There’s nothing better than seeing ‘books’ talking absolute rubbish about the Braves, because we’ll see at the end of the season who finishes on top. But the thing is the Braves were World Series Champions in 2021, unless you go and win it all you’ll have nothing to show for all the money you’ve spent and you will have to wallow in the corner again.
I’ve nothing but respect for the Mets roster, but here’s the thing, Scherzer hasn’t always pitched like he did against the Braves in the most recent series, in fact, he owns a 3.77ERA and an 11-9 .550 record against the Braves. The Braves have beaten him before and they’ll beat him again, Peterson and Bassitt also pitched great games, probably as well as they can pitch. On the contrary, Fried had a bad start, Strider didn’t pitch as well as he can, and Morton was also off, yet the Braves still took one game, and Swanson on a dry night with no humidity would have put Scherzer out of the ballpark instead of being caught on the warning track-fact.
There are plenty more games to go and may the best team win. Some Mets fans are very very boorish, clueless, and disrespectful towards the Braves though. Your team hasn’t won **** for a very long time and here you are talking smack about the Braves, it’s laughable. Last but not least, remember you had a 10 game lead courtesy of your soft schedule for the first 60 games. You have to play the Braves a lot more, we’ll see who wins the division.
bhambrave
I believe in Free Speech too, but that doesn’t mean I have to listen to it. If I’m going to mute someone, I give them a heads up first, in case they have a decent response. If they continue to troll, then I mute. After a while, I unmute to see if they’ve changed. Books hasn’t changed, so I’m muting him again. I’m not on a high horse, I just don’t want to waste my time reading his crap. He’s the only one I’m currently muting.

Forget trading for 2b help, what about another arm in that rotation? Morton’s age appears to have finally caught up with him. Anderson has struggled mightily. And I don’t see Soroka coming back and doing anything meaningful this year.
RunDMC
Morton had a month of good starts that ended with NYM and leaving the ball up for 3 HR. He went through similar pre-AS Break last year. Anderson, too. I don’t doubt we need some pitching support that I’m sure AA will be looking at around the league, but we’re not any different than most other teams with a much better record.
Fred McGriff HR
@Smoltzy16
You can’t have been watching Morton then. He’s been excellent his last few starts, and apart from a mistake or two against the Mets his power curve has been lights out and his four seam fastball has also been good. There is a long way to go, and when excellent pitcher’s like Morton who have been around the game long enough know how to time their run, he’ll be good when Atlanta need him to be.
Anderson is just 24, but even today against the Nats he struggled through but he kept us in the game.
