11:10am: The teams announced that Wade has been traded from the Angels to the Yankees in exchange for a PTBNL or cash.
10:10am: The Yankees are set to reacquire utilityman Tyler Wade from the Angels, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan (Twitter link). The Yankees are sending a player to be named later back to the Angels, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Wade will head to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the time being.
Wade, whom the Yankees traded to the Angels in the offseason, was designated for assignment by the Halos earlier this month and assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake after going unclaimed on outright waivers. As such, he’s not currently on the 40-man roster.
The 27-year-old Wade was New York’s fourth-round pick back in 2013 and spent nine years in the organization prior to being traded to Anaheim. That deal, like this one, was for a PTBNL or cash. No player was ever announced as going back to the Yankees, so it seems the two sides settled on a cash return instead.
Wade appeared in 67 games with the Angels in 2022, playing every position other than catcher, first base or pitcher and generally providing solid defense (particularly in the middle infield). He tallied what’s already a career-high 163 plate appearances with the big league club but managed only a tepid .218/.272/.272 batting line in that time. Wade’s 20.2% strikeout rate was the lowest of his career, but his 6.1% walk rate was also down nearly five percentage points from his 2019-21 levels. Wade also posted bottom-of-the-scale marks in average exit velocity (83.9 mph) and hard-hit rate (just 16%).
Of course, offense has never been Wade’s calling card. He spent as much time with the Yankees as he did from 2017-21 (264 games 491 plate appearances) due to his versatility with the glove and his above-average speed. Both were on display with the Halos, evidenced by his eight stolen bases (albeit in 13 tries) and the aforementioned appearances at six different defensive positions.
It’s a depth move for the Yankees, bringing back a player they know well who can provide them some insurance at various positions around the diamond. Wade is a career .286/.353/.414 hitter in 1132 plate appearances at the Triple-A level.

No.

Did he become his own player to be named later in the previous trade?
HalosHeavenJJ
That would be both awesome and fitting.

Very possible.
atxapex
Nah they’ll send Ryan Weber lol
Chisoxmakemecry
Why did the Yankees not just claim him when he was DFAd??
mrnotsoniceguy
Because it would have required a 40 man roster spot. This trade doesn’t.
LordD99
Good question. Maybe they wanted to ensure he passed through waivers and was already assigned to AAA, so it’s a AAA to AAA move. If they claimed him on waivers then they’d have to either roster him or pass him through waivers themselves. There’s no room for him on the MLB roster so this is likely a depth move.
Steve Adams
They’d have had to place him on the 40-man roster to do so. They don’t have to now that he’s cleared.
morebreakdowns
probably because they want him at AAA for depth and not to have him on the 40 man. if they claimed him then they would have had to DFA him again and then risk him being claimed by another team
stymeedone
Turns out there wasn’t much of a risk as he passed thru unclaimed.
JoeBrady
I’m also guessing that they save a tiny bit of money. His contract is for $825k. If the minimum wage is $600k, then the NYY save ~ $112k, plus the luxury tax.

PTBNL on the move again.
angryyankeesfan
He’s always going somewhere.
dirkg
Angels will find a way to make PTBNL miserable.
At least Phil Nevin has them inspired and playing well .. said no one.
Captain Judge99
Starting to get the feeling the Yankees will trade Oswald Peraza+ for Luis Castillo or Frankie Montas, even though I’ve been told this won’t happen. I hope I’m wrong about this.
bkbk
Impossible Peraza is going back for Wade
Captain Judge99
@bkbk- go back to sleep!
LordD99
If they believe Volpe is their future SS, then they certainly could move Peraza. It would have to be for someone more than a two month rental. I’d prefer Castillo above Montas, who is dealing with his own shoulder issue currently.
Captain Judge99
@LordD99- the Yankees have said many times that Oswald Peraza is the shortstop of the future. That doesn’t mean that Anthony Volpe doesn’t have a future with the Yankees playing another position, like 2nd base. The Yankees look at Trey Sweeney as a 3rd basemen, and Austin Wells as a future catcher or lst basemen.
Wrian Washman
Castillo is clearly the best option available why wouldn’t the best Yankee team since ’98 go after the best SP available after the Severino scare?
stymeedone
I’m guessing because Cashman can’t get Cinci to pay Castillo’s salary for this year. Isn’t that the new Yankee requirement?
Mickey777
Captain,
Think you are right. Much will depend on Severino’s test results. If they got Castillo and Peralta I’d be thrilled
Captain Judge99
@Mickey777- I wish I felt the same way you do, but truthfully I don’t. I don’t want either player. Hopefully they both get traded somewhere else. Besides German can take Sevvy’s spot if he’s hurt. I’d rather keep Peraza. Not saying that’s going to happen though.
mvpetro
Call up Peraza, let wade play SS at AAA, get rid of IKF
Sideline Redwine
IKF completely changed that defense. No coincidence that record is much better (even when accounting for lack of injury). As a Rays fan, I would love if they dumped IKF.
mvpetro
He’s defense is not good. Yes he makes some highlight reel plays but he is not a SS. Can’t make routine throws to first base. He has 11 errors I think probably would be more if not for Rizzo over there scooping a lot of them up. He is just not a good defensive shortstop and there is no argument against that. If you watch every game you would agree
YankeesBleacherCreature
All of his defensive metrics say otherwise this year and years past and using total errors made doesn’t really support your stance.
Halo11Fan
All of his defensive metrics?
According to statcast, outs above average, he was the second worst fielder on the Angels, Rengifo is the worst.
Granted, it likely had to do more with Maddon the stupid playing Wade in positions he couldn’t play, but it is what Angel’s fan saw, and it was bad.
mvpetro
So errors mean nothing? You have to hold your breathe every time he makes a throw to first on a routine play. I don’t care what any advance defensive metrics says he is not a SS on a World Series contending team
pinstripes17
IKF is a bad defender, makes routine plays look incredibly difficult.
Captain Judge99
@mvpetro- The plan is to start IKF at shortstop and eventually have Tyler Wade back him up if, they trade Peraza in a Castillo or Montas package. The Yankees can play Marwin Gonzalez and IKF for now at short.
Halo11Fan
He’s fast, but doesn’t field, hit or know how to run the bases. I was expecting a scrappy utility infielder, we got someone who shouldn’t be on a major league roster.

Esp when Wade would fill in at RF for Ward. I’m convinced the Baseball Gods got Maddon fired for putting Wade in the OF. My eyes still hurt from watching his routes to the ball.
JoeBrady
That was Maddon’s downfall. He thought everyone was Ben Zobrist and could be moved around the diamond at will.
Sideline Redwine
Bad ownership is the reason for Maddon’s downfall. Incredible success everywhere he has been. Patience.
Halo11Fan
Joe, you are correct. Maddon was constantly playing players out of position, constantly messing with the lineup and roles. He thought he was the smartest person in the room and he wasn’t close.
With the Angels, he didn’t have the talent here to overcome his Ouija Board moves.
Wrian Washman
This is pure baseless speculation but could it be a precursor to one of Volpe, Peraza, Sweeney getting moved?
HalosHeavenJJ
Tyler seemed like a good guy from my very limited interaction with him. Not his fault he was given way too much playing time here. That’s on Perry.

Marwin G’s days are numbered.
Joe says...
Except for a strike out rate that’s higher than what you’d want, Gonzalez has been ok in his role and better than what Wade has shown this year.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I have no issues with MG for his role. But I guess Wade is faster which negates his lack of production. From last night’s game, they would’ve pinch-ran for DJL with Wade as the ghost runner in the 10th had he been on the roster.
LordD99
Marwin is a better player. He’s going nowhere.
giantboy99
Wrong
cubsmetsbrewers
So here, Adams, “ Of course, offense has never been Wade’s calling card.” And the next paragraph you write “Wade is a career .286/.353/.414 hitter in 1132 plate appearances at the Triple-A level” showing disrespect to wade saying he has never been good at the plate while almost hitting 290 in triple a you dumb ass
Lloyd Emerson
You must be Wade’s agent, or his mother.
If you were to click on his name, highlighted in red, it would take you to his baseball reference page, which indicates that over the course of his major league career, he has been a below average offensive player.
YankeesBleacherCreature
My default is to assume someone is smart until they open their mouths and proves me wrong.
cubsmetsbrewers
I don’t know if I’d say that. He was pretty useful last year for the Yankees in fact i think at one point i remember him being their best hitter for a time in august. Secondly, he is a 274 hitter in the minors with over 3,000 abs indicating that offensive not being his “calling card” may be a misstatement. Also it may be worth noting he has only had 653 pa in the majors, resulting in 580 abs.. about a full seasons length, with a 214 average and 38 steals
cubsmetsbrewers
Triple a in 2017 he hit 310 and in 2019 he he 296 .. you idiot ️
rememberthecoop
I believe that when he said that, he was referring to his major league performance.
HalosHeavenJJ
I didn’t realize this site was AAATradeRumors.com
At the MLB level, Wade is well below average offensively. If you want the traditional slash line, he’s a .214/.291/.298 guy. When all three slashes start with a 2 and the first one nearly starts with a 1, offense is not your calling card.
If you want normalized stats, his OPS+ of 64 makes him 36% worse than a league average hitter.
cubsmetsbrewers
K one season halos heaven sounds like this and that isn’t your calling card either pocho boi

Marsh and Walsh are different enough that I don’t get confused. It’s true when I woke up and saw the alert on my phone for a split second I thought it said ward and I was not going to be happy.

Rick Pernell
Is Wade’s performance taken into account when the PTBNL is named? How is the trade finalized?
Joe says...
Wade was traded to LA for a player to be named and no player was ever named. My guess is he’s going back to NY for the same non existent player.
Gwynning
Each PTBNL trade can have it’s own unique quirks… but typically there is an agreed upon list of (usually) 5 names to choose from. Any of the (5) can be selected months from now. Again, I’m not entirely sure this applies to this PTBNL trade, but this is a typical MO.
Halo11Fan
I seem to remember one time a player was traded for himself. It’s rare, but not unique.
Viveleempireevil

jakec77
My guess is, they find a way to get him onto the active roster (and obviously 40 man) before end of August so they can carry him as a backup in postseason.
StudWinfield
You no longer need to be on the MLB roster in order to play in the postseason just on the 40 by 8/31
TommyLasutton
think everyone got tired of being confused while reading about Taylor Ward and Tyler Wade.
56Bomber
IMO Getting Wade could be a precursor to both trading for Castillo and moving Gallo. To get Castillo they’ll need to move Pereza or Volpe. Getting rid of Gallo will give more at bats to Carpenter but they’ll miss his defense and base running. Wade can help with both of those in late game situations by pinch running or replacing Carpenter or Stanton in the OF while being a solid infield fill in.
I don’t see the Yankees picking up unvaccinated ex-RedSox players when they just need to get Carpenter more ABs.
jackjohnson52183
What Should They Do With Tyler Wade?

They should call the Angels and say: “Oh, no! We thought you said Taylor Ward! Our bad. You can have Wade back. We’d rather have PTBNL.”

Cashman and his love affair with this AAAA player. Geez. Just what the Yankees need: a guy who makes stupid gaffes on the bases and in the field and who boasts a blistering 56 OPS+.
Poster formerly known as . . .
Upon reflection, that was too harsh. I was hoping Cashman wouldn’t bring Tyler back, but I shouldn’t deny him the possibility of improvement. He’s still just 27. I wish him success.
