The 2022 MLB Draft is underway, and here is the full list of each team’s selections from the first round. The Dodgers are the only team without a first-rounder, as their top pick (originally 30th overall) was dropped 10 places to 40th overall (the first pick of the second round) as part of their punishment for exceeding the highest luxury-tax tier in 2021. However, there are still 30 picks in the first round proper since the Mets have both the 11th and 14th overall picks — for not signing 10th overall pick Kumar Rocker last year, New York was given a compensatory selection in the 11th overall spot this year.
This year’s draft will again be 20 rounds long, and split over three days. The first 80 picks will be made tonight — the first two official rounds, the two Competitive Balance Rounds, and the two sets of compensatory rounds (giving picks to teams who lost qualifying offer-rejecting free agents). Rounds 3-10 take place on Monday, and rounds 11-20 on Tuesday.
Under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, the 2023 draft will have several differences, including a lottery to determine the top six picks, a revamped process for deciding the Competitive Balance rounds, possible extra picks for teams due to the Prospect Promotion Incentive rules, and possibly the end of the qualifying offer system as we know it should an international draft be implemented.
For one final year under this draft format, however, let’s dive into the picks. More details and scouting reports on all these young players are available in pre-draft rankings from Baseball America, Fangraphs, MLB Pipeline, The Athletic’s Keith Law, and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel. As well, Pipeline has the breakdown of the slot values assigned to each pick in the first 10 rounds, as well as the bonus pool money available to all 30 teams.

Did Kumar go high?
Yup, 3rd
Well deserved
Is he well deserved. He has shoulder problems and has missed time because of it.
Even the announcers said “What!”
He wasn’t supposed to go until late in the first.
Big surprise.
Except Harold Reynolds who thought Rocker would go number one overall lol
He had minor shoulder surgery last year. Doctors for the Rangers checked him out and gave him a clean bill of health.
I’ll take a flier on a pitcher that has ace stuff that can will himself through the 7th inning with a hurt shoulder and no fastball that seems to have recovered and can hit 95+. Is it a gamble, yes. But is their a surefire hall of famer in the draft? No, bc they’re all a gamble, whether it’s signability, injury, undeveloped aspects in their game. Anybody can crumble before they get to majors, then when u get there, u gotta do it for 15-20 yrs. There’s not anybody that’s got a 100% chance of doing that.u take what u project to be the best and will help ur club. And, look at rangers 3,4,5 pitchers in majors, right now. That’s why they aren’t in wc chase right now. Gambling on a pitcher made sense for them.
Harold has not gone yet though.
Thank God.
A virtual box of frozen sliders heading your way.
Rocker had 3 great college years. Throws in the upper 90s. Had the minor arm procedure done to correct issue. Great pick!!
Plus I get the Rangers had some sort of deal in place below slot value for Rocker.
Yeah he agreed to his contract within 24 hours of being picked. Good for that kid, now he gets to play with his former teammate. Should be a fun watch a couple seasons from now
I see what you did there, Donny.
John has to be proud that his kid was picked 3rd.
Probably, if he went with Harold.
Hope the fish get their hands on Parada or Johnson.
This is the Sons and Brothers draft.
LoL Mets, Rocker went even higher this time around, guess we will see who is right about him the Mets or the Rangers.
I don’t think it was an issue of questioning his talent but rather the injury they discovered, otherwise they’d never had drafted him to begin with.
Basically the Mets felt he is going to fall apart for them not even to give him an offer, obviously Texas doesn’t feel that way and looks like he can make even more $ of a signing bonus after being drafted 3rd overall and can go join Jack Leiter in the Rangers rotation just like at Vanderbilt.
Owen white, not looking too shabby and might be right behind them
Rocker wouldn’t share his medicals prior to last years draft. No one knew how bad his arm was, as he was trying to hide it. This year, surgury has already been performed, and he has recovered. Plus he decided to share the medical pre draft. Much easier decision for Texas.
Plus he was hitting 95=99mph in indy ball. That probably helped too
From what I remember they signed him to an offer above slot only to pull it after they didn’t like his shoulder. It’s worked well for them getting Parada at 11th. If Rocker has any more arm/shoulder issues I could definitely see him convert to closer and possibly be the best ever in that role. Maybe to be fair top 5. There’s been a lot of great ones. Lee Smith, Dennis Eckersley a converted starter, Aroldis Chapman, Craig Kimbrel..
Na Mariano Rivera was the best to ever do it and it’s not even close… Kumar got a lot to prove and you want him to be a starter if you’re drafting em 3rd overall to get the most value
Hell of a leap on draft night, ActionDan.
Its been reported that he agreed to an underslot signing bonus. Taking Rocker is a huge risk. Any shoulder issue is not minor.
Whoa. Best ever? Pump the brakes there.
Mets fans shouldn’t get too excited… The draft picks haven’t signed yet. The Mets might try to screw the pooch again.
Johnny Smoltz…
Lol. The Mets just landed one of the top bats in this draft as compensation. Good luck in Texas big guy. Hope he does well but the Mets franchise is just fine
Wow surprised rocker went so high. Guess the rangers liked what they saw in independent league
Why is Rocker such a shock for going so high this year?
The mock drafts were way off, then.
Because he went a lot lower last year, and the Mets refused to sign him.
Probably because of the medicals from last year
Because the Mets passed on him after seeing his medicals and any shoulder issue is a huge red flag, even what some on here are trying to call a “minor surgery:.
Rangers with a great pick. I was hoping he’d fall to Philly, but glad to see him not land in the NL.
Same, but kind of neat Philly got Carl Crawford’s son.
Must admit, I was hoping Crawford would somehow make it to TB.
Maybe we won’t trade away this Crawford before he develops into a useful MLB player.
Every report I’ve read so far on Termarr Johnson can be summarized as “hit machine”, and he reads as and sounds like a very smart guy with a great baseball IQ. The Bucs may have lucked out.
80 hit tool. I can’t ever remember many guys having that high of a hit tool. He’s gonna be Ichiro like
70 hit tool
Depends on who you looked at for your ratings. Several had him as an 80 hit tool. MLB had him as a 70 hit tool.
MLB didn’t have anyone over a 60 hit tool, so grading him a 70 made him far and away the best hitting prospect.
GoRav- Vlad jr had an 80 hit tool, tho he was not in the draft back then.
Monkey’s Uncle- So far from the draft the player that I like the most is Termarr Johnson. The Pirates did a great job drafting him. All of these players are very talented, but I believe the Pirates will have a terrific player in a couple of years.
Just reading MLB Pipeline’s report on him easily convinced me. Bat to ball skill of Vlad Guerrero Sr., plate discipline of Wade Boggs. Imo, a player’s walk and strikeout rates are a good indicator of success in the majors. I don’t have any solid proof to back that up, but if you don’t have trouble following/tracking and reacting to premium velocity and breaking stuff at a young age, like Johnson, you have a future in MLB.
mlb1225- Yes, you’re right Johnson could have a bright future in the majors in a few years.
The downside to him is that he is already quite stocky for his age and there is very little thought he will stick at SS. His lack of an arm will limit him to 2B/LF. Don’t trust MLB.com prospect grades. They always over rank players. There’s a little bit of a Willie Calhoun risk to him, but if the bat plays it could be special.
Then read what BA said about him. Or BP. Or if you want to torture yourself, read what Law said about him over at The Athletic. All are saying he is the best bat in the draft and best high school hitting prospect in a decade.
He will end up being a 2B because he does not have the arm to be a SS in the majors. That bat would play if he ended up being a DH. He is that good.
I think he will be a bust. Sorry. He showed poorly when facing the better competition. Strike out central. Lack of power. He’s young. He could improve in the future. Just my opinion
Who? Johnson? He did great against better stuff. MLB Pipeline: “He isn’t fazed by mid-90s fastballs or quality breaking balls, using his quick, compact stroke to drive the ball to all fields.” He hits the ball hard and has 55-grade raw power per FanGraphs. You must be confused with another player.
Don’t confuse him with the facts. Johnson was pretty much a consensus opinion of the best pure hitter in the draft. As a high schooler yet? Impressive.
You are being sarcastic, right? He crushed the ball in the showcase circuit against the best prep prospects. He struck out 10.6% of the time which is elite. He has 60 power on every grading platform.
Here is what Perfect Game said about him after the showcase circuit.
“Left handed hitter, creates easy plus bat speed, attacks balls in the zone but sees the ball extremely well and will not expand, has incredible raw power for his size, hit a violent line drive game home run off a 93 mph fastball, perhaps the top all around hitter in the 2022 class. 6.65 runner in the sixty. Has very quick feet on defense, works low to the ground behind balls, has a chance to stay at shortstop but if not will be a highest level defensive second baseman.”
I absolutely loved his interview with Lauren Gardner right after he was picked by the Pirates.
Rocker going 3rd blows up all of the mock draft boards! Rangers could have a dynamic pitching duo in a few years with Leiter and Rocker
Teammates in college too. I bet they’re friends with McKenzie
Cant believe Kumar went that high, to my rangers no less 🙁 not that i dont think he has talent but i was thinking the back half of the first round
I get what ur saying but we don’t have a 2nd or 3rd after signing seager and seminars and I’m guessing they were determined to take a pitcher. So, it was 3rd pick or see what’s left in 3rd rd.
Yeah. Rangers wouldn’t likely have had another chance at him. I thought Texas would have a really low pool with the loss of those picks, but it’s not bad and I’m assuming Rocker will be below slot. Rangers could pick up some quality players who fall because of price tags tomorrow. They don’t have round 2 or 3 picks, but they might score some second and third round talent still.
Kumar I would love to see the day he faces the Mets. As a Braves fan I’ll go to Arlington for that! Leiter and Rocker. Nice.
YES!! I’m very happy about that pick.
Gonzales blocks him, if they both are playing at high levels who goes where?
Johnson is in HS which gives some lead time until the majors but I’m wondering how this would play out.
this is true but. Unless there is a perfect fit for high quality and a position of need (like Davis is/was).. you take the best available. his stock is high.. if you are happy with Nick Johnson’s trade value is high and could help bring in pieces to fill in to make the pirates a contender….. assuming enough of the pirates prospects pan out.
Figure out position later. Maybe we trade some guys, maybe som guys don’t pan out. Johnson can play shortstop and second base. We’ll figure it out as we go.
I love termarr but i dont think he can play ss. Most scouts peg him as a 2nd baseman. Ben Cherington killing it as pirates gm though
I’m still quite concerned with depth in our system for LHP and elite OF depth. I trust BC though he’s been incredible with everything so far only exception is not allowing Bae to get at least a cup of coffee yet.
I’m not happy with some of the roster decisions this year, specifically prospect promotions but I’ll give it a pass for now. There’s no rush at the moment. We’re in year 3* of the rebuild, but a decent portion of our best prospects are in the upper levels of the minor leagues (AA/AAA).
I say year 3* because although we technically started the rebuild in 2020-2021, most of the rebuilding was rebuilding the coaching and front office, and the only notable guy we traded that off-season was Starling Marte. Plus the season was only 60-games and there was no minor league season.
really i see the rebuild starting when cutch got traded.. that was the the yup we’re done.. next time guys.. sure a few guys were still around but everyone was looking for the next ‘big’ trade.
Rebuild didn’t start until we fired Hurdle. We traded Cutch, but then we had that solid 2018 season and they decided to go back on any rebuilding. Fired Hurdle, Searage and Huntington at the end of 2019 and offically started rebuilding then.
after 18 is where i’m thinking was full on.. but after the cutch trade the writing was on the wall.
You know you’re a Pirates fan when:
– a record three games over .500 and a fourth place finish qualifies as “solid”
– you swiftly defend the team trading franchise cornerstones like McCutchen and Cole
– you think about the front office and field managers when considering whether or not your team is rebuilding
– you’re upset about “prospect promotions”
Is this a Bob Nutting burner account? Good lord.
1. Being over .500 isn’t great, but solid. Never said they did phenominal, but still in the top 15 rather than bottom 15. Most people consider above average, solid. Heck, a lot of people consider average solid.
2. Pretty sure all 30 teams would have traded 1 season of McCutchen for 6 six seasons of Bryan Reynolds. Can’t defend the Cole trade, but it is what it is and it’s been nearly 5 years since that trade. I never defended either trade neither. Just said that I think the rebuild started when we completley tore down by trading Musgrove, Taillon, and Bell in the 2020-2021 off season, then traded Adam Frazier, Richard Rodriguez, Tyler Anderson at the deadline.
3. Yes, I do think about the front office and coaches when a team is rebuilding. I think it’s a very overlooked part of when teams are rebuilding. The Pirates hired a brand new general manager, CEO, head of player development (along with several other player development roles), head coach, and pitching coach. I believe that is rebuilding the front office. The CEO and GM are the guys calling the shots above, and the head of player development is a very key part in the rebuild.
4. Yes, I am not happy about some of the promotions (upset might have been a little too strong). Ji-Hwan Bae has been having a great season and I get to watch Josh VanMeter every other day at second base instead. I’d rather see Travis Swaggerty than Jake Marisnick. I’d rather see anyone than Yoshi Tsutusgo. These are all guys who are MLB ready, but we’ve been a bit slow on the trigger to get them to the majors.
@joew The writing was on the wall, but we didn’t go full-on until like 2019-2020. Like we traded Cutch and Cole, then what? We treaded water in 2018 and did the Archer trade, did absoutley nothing in the 2018-2019 off-season (literally, we were the only team who did not sign a single player to a major league contract the entire off season), and then after 2019, we fired Hurdle, Searage, Huntington, the CEO, hired a new head of player development, then traded Marte. The only trade we made at the deadline was Jarrod Dyson for international bonus money. The next off-season, we trade Bell, Taillon, and Musgrove, then trade Frazier, Rodriguez, and Anderson at the deadline.
I get the McCutchen and Cole trade were big trades, but we didn’t do anything else that off-season. If we were really going into teardown mode, then we should have at least dealt one of Marte, Freese, Nova, and Harrison that same off-season as well. Heck, that same off-season, they got Corey Dickerson, sort of a counter-productive move if you’re rebuilding.
That was the problem with the late-2010’s Pirates. They were never bad enough to tank, but never good enough to compete. From 2016 to 2018, they were in that limbo state of 75-80 wins, which didn’t help them secure high draft picks or convince them one way or another to completley reset or to actually try and win something.
@mlb1225; great post. Thanks. In regards to number 3. so important that all levels of management are on the “same page” as far as a team rebuild direction. Agreed. Question. Who’s “page” is it? I would think ownership. Mr. Nutting made the decision to cut ties with long tenured execs and in the same year! IE Huntington + Coonelly; replacing them with Charington and Williams. It had to be difficult. O’s fan here. Orioles direction and it’s timeline looks very similar to the Pirates. Very soon for us, by 23/24, we will have youthful foundation in place … and under team control. Exciting. Next step, expanding payroll. Paying some existing players with less team control what they deserve and plunking down serious cash in free agency. So Mr Nutting and Mr. Angelos, when your execs come to you and say it’s time to expand payroll, will you do it? If you need a reference or 2, see Astros and Braves. IE. Spend (and spend wisely)!
Oh, good draft pick by the Pirates. It looks like they went with best available on board!
I know most are skeptical when Cherington says we’ll add to the payroll when we think the time is right, but I believe it. The Pirates had a semi-respectable payroll I’m 2016-2018, hovering around $100 million in each of those seasons. Problem was it didn’t feel like a $100-million team because a lot of that money was directed at sub-1 WAR players like Neftali Feliz, Ryan Vogelsong, Juan Nicasio, Danny Hudson, John Jaso, Jordy Mercer, Jeff Locke, Jon Niese, etc. Like there was $30 million tied between 10 sub-replacement level players in 2016.
I’m liking the draft so far. I don’t think that he’s picked the best player available in the competitive balance round, or round 2, but both Harrington and Barco were top 5 available. I think there’s a guy he’s looking to take on day 2 and is going to go underslot with his two picks on Day 1.
You can defend the Cole trade, he was never going to sign in Pittsburgh, they got quality prospects (at the time), Musgrove and Feliz. They took the best offer they could get at the time.
It was a quantity over quality kind of trade. The Pirates could have probably gotten back a better overall prospect had they forgone Feliz and Jason Martin.
@mlb1225 I disagree but hey that happens 🙂
I’m with you on the payroll. Bob shown he’s willing to spend when the time is right especially. I bet he continues to give a larger budget than we’re using but probably tells them the more they save now the more they can spend later…. seems like now is the time to lock in some contracts though given the world status.
also agree with some of the call up mentions.. Josh and Yoshi shouldn’t be on the MLB roster. Chavis is a much better 1b. they are taking time away from those who could use it.
Gonzalez, pergeuro, Bae, Martin, Swaggerty and Frazier should all be getting some serious time. Positions overlap but doesn’t mean they can not get some time.
Yesterdays picks look pretty good as well
I guess it depends on your definition of rebuilding. If you consider it not having a clear future, then I would consider the rebuild stated in 2017-2018. But if you define it when a team trades most of their fostered veterans, then the rebuild didn’t really start until 2020-2021.
I know Pirates fans get alot of hate, I know your owner stinks and that’s not fun as a fan.
I know BC is going to do his best and will likely get some good to great Talent come through. But his hands will always be tied because of your owner.
Maybe the best way to circumvent the ownership and payroll issues (but will suck for the prospects) is to literally hold them down until they are Rule 5 eligible before starting their clocks. And having an en mass call up of 15 or 20 prospects. Field an all Rookie team 1-9 and the entire Starting staff.
I know, dumb. But stranger things have happened and could work in that scenario, Nutting is paying nothing in payroll for half a decade or more. None of the players are going anywhere for a half decade plus. And if the players are good enough (which BC should provide) you can create a winning team and MAYBE get a big time superstar with a year or two left on a mega deal to push u over the top.
I dunno, just throwing it out into the universe for you. I wouldn’t be mad at a Jays Pirates WS in 2026 . We beat the Os to get there and you Beat the Marlins
2016 – 24th in payroll
2017 – 24th in payroll
2018 – 28th in payroll
Not seeing where that is semi-respectable.
I do think Cherington has done a heck of a good job in this years draft so far.
Honestly, does anyone really hate Pirates fans? I think mostly of us feel sorry for Pirates fans. They’ve been dealt a really bad hand – ownership is bad, The front office has gone between mediocre plans. The field staff was scuffling at best.
Good luck – we feel for you.
Me to , glad no underslot deal and thank the rangers for allowing him to fall to us
As a Ranger fan, I really liked the Kumar Rocker pick. Then, I remembered what the Texas Rangers buffoons do to pitchers they try to develop. I feel bad for Kumar, Jack Leiter, Cole Winn, and all the rest. Hopefully these players realize this sooner than later, and ignoring the advice they’re being given while with the Rangers organization.
Cade Horton? Cubs must have a deal for underslot.
Maybe. Calais says he’s the best college arm in the draft. But under slot may be the play..
Was he the highest pitcher on the board at that pick? If not, then you’re probably right about it being under slot, a strategy that teams like Baltimore (among others) often employ. Personally, give me the best player. The draft is such a crapshoot anyway, why further reduce the odds of succeeding by not picking your top guy? And, it eally is kind of a slap in the face to the scouts working for you. They did all that work, end up with some consensus? but instead of taking that guy, you take someone to save money for later rounds. It would be interesting to see who actually was next on the Cubs board.
Interesting to discuss because obviously we’ll never know who they had in what order on their board. I was hoping for Lee, but hey, someone felt strong enough about Horton to fight for him enough to convince Hoyer. Let’s see who they take later.
Yeah and this is the first draft for Hawkins as GM. Wonder if his experience working in an organization that was very good at developing pitxhing had any influence in the Cubs taking a starter first?
Yes. Good point.
Rocker joins his old Vanderbilt teammate Leiter in the Rangers farm system. Very cool.
Great pick for the D-Backs. Was hoping Baltimore would pass on him.
TEX selected Rocker to be the big piece of the package they send to WASH for Soto. You heard it here first.
Soto isn’t being traded for at least a year. You heard it here first.
I have stinky in pants! You heard it here first.
Tick Tock: LOL!!
If you have stinky in your pants, you might be a coprophiliac.
Kumar woln’t be eligible to be traded until the offseason anyways so it doesn’t matter.
Soto is gone by Aug 2nd. Some team, and I hope its not the Padres, are going to give up the farm for him.
Regardless of whether they sign him long term, 2.5 years of Soto is HUGE for whatever team trades for him. A 160 OPS+ bat fits well in any lineup.
But the price will be very high to acquire him and it’s gonna take a team that has enough on the farm that they can take the hit and not be gutted.
Good pick for the Pirates, I might have went for Berry since he profiles to be an MLB 1b and 1b is more of a need of high quality… Mason isn’t doing well at the moment.which would push me more to berry BUT.. still Johnson is more than a solid pick.
Regardless, at 4th and the way the board was, it would be hard for the pirates to go wrong.
So here we are 11th overall and selecting another Catcher wtf
Yeah, I dont understand the point in drafting a catcher when we should probably be drafting outfield prospects and pitching prospects
Has a tremendous hit tool and athletic enough to move from behind the plate. Also, with a DH now, what is wrong with having two excellent hitting catchers? He was the highest rated player on the board. This is a great pick for the Mets
I don’t hate the pick i just don’t love it
Always great Mets takes from you. He fell into their lap. Exactly when do you think he’s hitting the majors?
Hard to say. He is immediately the number 2 or 3 Mets prospect. I think he has an ETA around 2024 mid year but could certainly hit his way there earlier. This pick is 100% bat oriented so I could see a very quick transition but being a sophomore he may need a bit longer. Love the bat.
I’m saying they should have selected Jung instead
Teams pick the best talent on the bard, not for positions of need. Just 17% of 1st rounders become above average regulars in the majors and the average time to the majors is 4 years. The Mets needs now are not the same as they will be in 4 years.
Something to do with him being a top 5 talent, DH, plays the catcher position, will most likely make the majors with a strong bat, and would be a solid trade piece down the road if necessary or backup plan if Alvarez breaks down or is dealt. Yeah, I’d say it was a no brainer and great pick.
Alvarez is not good defensively. He may never be. It might turn out that he’s a DH first and a catcher second. Catcher is possibly the hardest position in the game and typically has some of the weakest hitters on the team. If you can have two guys who can hit and play catcher, that’s a win, especially with the DH in the National League to stay.
Rotating them between catcher and DH gets them full time at bats and keeps them relatively fresh and healthy.
Jace Jung? I thought we were going Proctor or Klesko. Sure hope MLB gets rid of the shift because it really hurt left handed hitters
After the season they are having, the Tigers wanted hitting, and you can’t blame them. I never saw them taking pitching in the first round.
Outlawing the shift would be like outlawing sliders, or pitching coach mound visits. Arbitrary. Dictatorial. The DB commish et al. need to leave the game alone.
This Tiger draft has the elements of a media stunt influenced by owner interference. The Tigers are hoping to draw attention for their version of the next Whitaker-Trammell as they drafted SS Peyton Graham in the 2nd round. The Tigers are for sale.
Don’t think so. detroitsportsnation.com/chris-ilitch-responds-to-q…
angels really need a catcher in the system!
Exactly what I was thinking
Just about every body needs a catcher.
they just had an opportunity to draft one but picked a ss who experts think fit 2b better. on top of that angels have 2 ss near the top of 30 prospects.
Perry: Don’t worry, The next 18 picks will be Catchers. 😉
Quero
A little surprised that Collier is still available.
Reds couldn’t pass on the opportunity to add another third baseman to the system
Exactly
The meme continues
Wow watching the draft and commentary , seems like 15 lock HOFers drafted already this year ,lol best draft ever
Just tuned in. They have five guys doing live commentary. Which one is the debbie-downer?
Which show you watching? It’s strangely on both ESPN and MLBN with different analysts.
On ESPN with Karl Ravech taking lead. I’m barely listening and reading scouting reports as they’re picked.
The ESPN broadcast was better than MLBN, although now we’re down to MLBN.
MLBN has Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo, who are prospect experts, but they barely used them the first half. Hopefully that changes. I don’t need more Harold Reynolds!
I saw Reynolds at first and switched over.
So Susac’s ceiling is…the greatest all-round catcher of all-time? Why did he fall to #19?
because his floor is the worst all-around catcher of all time
Nope, he wouldn’t have gone 19th overall if that were true.
My Pads got their guy! Stoked! Welcome to the Whale’s Vajayjay, Lesko!!
You like that pick? A kid that will miss all of 2023?
“I like it alot” – Lloyd Christmas
Big gamble but the kid is a top-shelf talent. (Possible top pick, probable Top 3 if he didn’t miss his Senior season.) Nobody is drafted to make the Bigs in their first year; let him rehab and learn from the coaches on the Elsinore bench and maybe get an A debut in Sept 23. No rush though. TJS would seem to be less of a stigmatizing burden nowadays. Go Pads
Oakland takes a catcher.. interesting.
Murphy, Langeliers, Soderstrom, Susac….if you need a catcher, gotta go through Beane.
Is it somewhat surprising that Brooks Lee lasted until #8?
I think there were some injury concerns with Lee.
So Braves take a pitcher ranked 48th with the 20th pick. I cannot wait to see what they do with the 35th pick the traded a near mlb ready Drew Waters and 2 other prospects for…..
The Braves generally do a good job of drafting. So if they like the guy, I’ll trust the pick.
Honestly, I do think they gave up on Waters too soon though. I hope they nail the comp pick they got for him.
Agreed on all counts.
For a team that just needs an outfielder (assuming they can re-sign Swanson and Riley), Jordan Beck at pick 35 would’ve looked a lot better than ANOTHER high school pitcher.
Maybe they can teach Vaughn Grissom to play left field.
in case you don’t understand the MLB draft, let me explain how it’s different from NBA and NFL.
In MLB each team is alloted an amount to sign their top players, so sometimes teams will pick up players higher than expected because they can sign them for less than the spot would normally allow. Then they can use those savings to overpay for players lower in the order that normally wouldn’t sign because they have committed to college and they expect to get picked much higher in a future draft.
Nice pick up by the Jays.
Lefty that throws 98-99 in highschool. Well lefty pitcher anyways, he does everything else as a righty. Hope they can sign him now. Think it will take an over slot getting a 15th ranked prospect at 23rd.
Yankees’ 1st Rd Pick = Spencer Jones = Aaron Judge 2.0
Kid sounds like he has good “makeup” from an article and direct quotes I’ve read.
Once he puts his lipstick on we will see if he can hit
Somebody reassure me that Cade Horton is a top 10 guy and we didn’t just pass on some serious talent.
Cubs can’t develop pitchers to save their lives so I’m worried this is going to be a huge blunder.
And since he has two years of eligibility left, idk if we’re going to see all that much in under-slot savings.
Sounds like an underslot play to me.
He’s not a top 10 but the best college pitcher available in the first round. I think the Cubs went with the safe pick. Exceptional athlete pitching and playing third base while QB’ing as football team captain. Also a TJ surgery survivor.
Tigers traded Paredes and a top draft pick for Meadows. Oh my gosh this trade just keeps getting worse. 🙁
71 is a top draft pick? Paredes hasnt done a thing over the last two weeks. Jury is still out on that trade since tigers have two more years of meadows team control
@Airo13
Yes 71st pick isn’t a very high pick and yes, you have 2 more years of control, however, Paredes is a far better pick-up.
I fear that Meadows may be having trouble returning to a competitive level with his current injuries, not to mention his battles with vertigo.
Sad, I have been a fan of Meadows, good clubhouse guy.
Paredes just got benched. He will be hitting .220 soon. I will take 2 more years of a healthy Meadows
Just sitting back with a bowl of popcorn to watch all of the experts guarantee that certain guys in this draft are surely All Stars and Cooperstown bound players. then down the road, I’ll get a chuckle like I do with the guys drafted a few years ago.
Oh, and the entertainment will be certain fans of teams celebrating the pick their team made, and start counting the days for the kid to come in to start his historic career….and anyone doubting it when they see flaws, will be wrong until they are right.
You sound jaded. Throw some cayenne pepper onto your popcorn.
That Tyler Kolek pick is still stinging, isn’t it?
Exactly my point.
Why In The f are the A’d setmonnhabing so many catching prospects?
Moneyball 3.1. Corner the catchers’ market and name their own price when they get traded in 5-7 years.
Cubs get best pitcher in draft with Horton. Love it .
Man I hope it works out. Our record developing pitching is pretty bleak.
The old staff had a horrible track record, but this is a new staff in charge of developing. Carter Hawkins comes from the Indians with a great track record of developing pitching and Dan Kantrovitz comes from the A’s, again a great track record of developing pitching. I think we will see a good turn around in the system of identifying and developing pitchers.
*best College pitcher in draft
The hometown team makes their 1st and only pick of the day. Now it’s a ghost town. lol
I wonder why the Mets took a catcher at 11. Could this possibly be backup for if we have to include Alvarez in a blockbuster?
Picking the best talent.
As a Mets fan I’m wishing they picked him because they know they need to throw Alvarez in any Soto package.
But I realize how insane the Nats would have to be, to trade him within the division.
Best available and his bat is good enough that he could move from C and still have value. In today’s game he can rotate w. DH/C/3rd position bc no elite catcher is catching 130+ games.
Why is that 11th ranked kid Porter still undrafted?
Rangers got him, making the Rocker pick make a lot of sense.
Interesting choice for Dbacks in the Competitive Balance A, at #34 picking a bullpen pitcher. Trying to correct Dbacks bullpen problems thru the Draft is a unique approach. Hope it helps soon.
Harold and Kumar go to Globe Life Field.
Kumar reeks of future flop tbh
I see a couple of these arms fast tracked to bullpens for a stretch run to playoffs?
Who do you think does or it going to do this?
Atlanta, white Sox, Mariners, St. Louis?
Also, would this be an advantage to this whole overdraft value money ploy. Kid goes pro and never consider the college time etc when they are taking me to the show!
I dig what the Cubs did tonight, they drafted Cade Horton in a likely under slot bonus situation so they can pay a overslot bonus to Jackson Ferris in the 2nd round.
Kind of like taking to 7th pick and exchanging it for two mid first round picks instead.
Cubs walk away to two really good high upside arms With TOR potential: well done!
lottery system for the draft is so dumb
@Airo13

Seems like every year there are more and more sons of former Major Leaguers going in the 1st round.
To me, any pitcher taken is a risk. I personally love the pick. Wishing he would of fallen to the phillies!
With no 1st or 2nd rd picks the last 2 seasons, very few prospects who project as MLB regulars, and the 1st selections each of the past 2 years slow to progress and develop it was vital that Houston got a very low risk high probability MLB regular with their first pick.
I really like it.
Not high ceiling but very high floor
Leave it to Preller to take a kid that won’t even pick up a baseball until 2024.
Lesko is really good, it’s absolutely worth the wait
Yup, it wasn’t going to happen, but I was hoping Lesko would fall to the RS. You need to draft the best all-around talent, regardless of the arrival date. I think it is an outstanding pick for the Padres.
No one knows if he is good anymore. We won’t until spring training 2024.
Well over 90% of Tommy John recipients come back at least as good as they were before. Many even add velocity. He is a high school pitcher with above-average control, college pitcher type polish and his worst pitch is an above-average curveball that gets over 3000rpms. Pitching prospects very rarely get better than Lesko.
Definitely a risky pick but with his talent if he wasn’t risky he wouldn’t have made it to #15, I believe you said the Dodgers wasted their first rounder when they took Walker Buehler in 2015. Lesko could end up like him or he could end up like Brady Aiken. Only one thing to do at this point.
Anyone able to identify a player that slipped in the order or the best possible sleeper between 20th + rank ?
Brock Porter, the top ranked pitcher in the draft and mlbs #11 ranked prospect still hasn’t been drafted wu tang. He comes with signing risk but huge upside.
He went in the 4th round to the Rangers. The $2.5 million they saved on the underslot signing of Rocker will go to trying to sign Porter.
This article had an interesting take on why he was not taken earlier.

I don’t think Kumar was a bad pick at 3. It seems many pitchers have issues at some point in their career and bounce back. He clearly has electric stuff and had success in college worthy of a top 10 selection unlike how the mocks viewed him.
I think Brooks Lee slipping to 8 is crazy though.
Where is the rest of the 2022 draft results?
