The Tigers announced this afternoon that starting pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez is going on the restricted list. The club released a brief statement from general manager Al Avila accompanying the announcement, which reads: “Eduardo Rodríguez has informed the Club that due to personal matters he will not rejoin the team at this time. As a result, Eduardo has been placed on the restricted list until further notice.”
The team hasn’t provided any further details, nor is there any public timetable for his return. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch addressed the matter with reporters (including Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free-Press) shortly after the announcement, stating “The restricted list part is the relationship with the player and the organization. I knew he wasn’t going to make his start, and he wasn’t going to pitch in the minor leagues or the major leagues at this time. This was inevitable.” Hinch added he was “looking forward to (Rodríguez’s) return, whenever that is” and would “continue to support him.”
Rodríguez signed a five-year, $77MM guarantee this past offseason. That marked the first aggressive strike of an active winter for Avila and his front office, with the southpaw brought in from the Red Sox to hopefully anchor a strong starting staff. Injuries have dashed those hopes, however, as the club has lost Casey Mize to Tommy John surgery and been without Matt Manning for an extended period of time because of shoulder and biceps issues. Back-end starters Tyler Alexander and Michael Pineda have also missed time, as has Rodríguez himself.
The 29-year-old southpaw has been out of action since May 22, when he landed on the injured list due to a ribcage strain. He’d begun a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo last week and seemed on track to rejoin the rotation in fairly short order, but he’ll be away from the team as he attends to his personal concerns.
Players on the restricted list are not paid, so Rodríguez will forfeit his salary for whatever time he spends away from the team. He also won’t count against the club’s 40-man roster.

Tigers more than happy to save the $$$.

ERod is a standup guy who has my utmost respect. I feel bad for him, and hope everything works out for him in the long run. It’s not like his absence is keeping his team from contending for a championship.
Yankee Clipper
FPG: I agree. You know it’s got to be something bad for him to forfeit his salary. He’s human, obviously, and many of us forget that these guys have marriages, kids, bills, family health concerns, etc. I hope he’s okay & gets whatever help he needs during this time. I don’t wish bad on anyone, and certainly wouldn’t just because the guy has money –

For some reason, an Amy Winehouse song popped into my head.

Wow! Best wishes to ERod.
Rick Wilkins
Agreed. I’m sure the trolls on here will all lament “the millionaire athlete shouldn’t have personal issues”, but I’m sure they are loaded with their own personal issues. Hope whatever the situation is, dude gets it resolved.
MLB-1971
Millionaire athletes also have the right to choose whether to get the Covid vaccine or not with none of the “not a team player” BS.
SportsFan0000
No they do not. If you don’t get vaccinated then it affects your team, the league and much more. You could be banned from Canada and Blue Jays games. You could be banned from airlines and certain hotels and much more.
When you sign a contract, you agree to bide by the law and public health laws and directives.
Mystery Team
Is there a law that states you have to be vaccinated? I’ve not heard of that law. Also is being banned from Canada really a bad thing? These guys miss so much time these days so what if they miss a start against the Blue Jays. Maybe Canada needs to come back to planet Earth and stop with the nonsense.
Shoguneye
I wish the current junta was literally out of this world and never comes back to that theatre of the absurd in Ottawa. Clowns.
dinsdale
Mystery Team: For your information, the United States has the exact same rule (re vaccination required for cross-border travel by air). However, 100% of Blue Jays’ players are vaccinated, so it does not affect them. Presume they are part of “planet Earth”.
censorshipsuxblowme
so, has canada had over 1 million (more like 2 million, given that republican leaders have lied about cvoid) deaths from covid?
yeah, didn’t think so.
funny how the 2 countries with the most deaths from it happen to be full of fundie groomers, i mean christians.
almost like being a religion that says you fry if you think for yourself is a bad thing.

meanwhile, your group set off bombs, blocked traffic, and left messes everywhere to clean up there.
but sure, trudeau and company are a junta.
remind me again, how many folks who think like you have died from covid?
oh yeah, pretty much all the covid deaths in america and canada are you types.
ah well, always funny when you guys die, so why should we stop you from doing it?

I cannot relate to being a millionaire. However, I did live in a beautiful tourist destination for 8 years. Visitors would commonly ask how magical it was to live there year round? My answer usually explained that as beautiful as the scenery is, that real life still follows you. Relationships, stress, the things that make us human. I imagine millionaires experience similar. Everyone expects you live a dream life, but real life doesn’t care what your bank account says.

At least it wasn’t during the Olympics.

Dave, I did call a timeout, right then. But, I was driving, so it didn’t work out too well.
User 163535993
Glad the Tigers did a bang up job of vetting this guys situation( Whatever it is) and offered him 77 million bucks. Well played sirs, Well played indeed.
Rick Wilkins
What a stupid comment.
User 163535993
I’m not the stupid people who offered someone who is in an unstable situation 77 million bucks.. Yours is the stupid comment. Mine is just painfully obvious.
allweatherfan
They aren’t paying him anything now.
Rick Wilkins
Doubling down on the stupidity. Bold move. Having a clown as your profile pic makes total sense Mikey.
cubs2016
Who said he’s unstable? You’re an idiot. He might have just found out some horrible news, (family member has cancer) etc, and you think he’s unstable. What a joke you are.
Airo13
There’s zero evidence that whatever situation he has going on, was present when he signed the contract. Some of you act like a GM should have a crystal ball they can look into to determine future injuries and personal issues.
Motown is My Town
Um1525….You have no idea what his personal situation he’s dealing with even is, but then again based on your idiotic comment it appears you have no idea about a lot of things…so sad, but like I say you just can’t fix stupid!!
Fever Pitch Guy
Airo – Exactly! It’s not like the Tigers couldn’t wait a few more months to give him a $145M extension in Spring Training right after a half-season that screamed Tommy John surgery.
No CURRENT Tigers President was that stupid.
User 163535993
Uh, The very fact that he’s able to play but won’t due to “PERSONAL REASONS” makes it pretty obvious he’s in some kind of UNSTABLE situation bonehead.
Motown is My Town
Appears you’re an expert on being UNSTABLE

If you think you’re coming off as intelligent here, you’re sorely mistaken.
Jarred Kelenic's Beer Can
That unstable situation didn’t come up until recently, bonehead.

unclemike Never assume because assuming makes an a$$ out of you. Detroit is the most fun, gritty and authentic city in the nation. No other US city is even remotely like Detroit.
Samer
“Personal reasons” is anything. Not sure why are associating w mental health — Good luck to this guy; Respect his privacy.
tigerfan1968
this reminds of when as a freshman I wrote this is the greatest novel ever written (Sons and Lovers) in an essay. The prof asked if I had read all the novels… Now have you lived in every city in the US… I read or heard that he does not want to play anymore in Detroit… not authentic enough city for him.. I did not mind the signing about 3 years not five…
Greenberg
And there’s zero evidence you were part of the signing process or know exactly what went on.
It’s funny that you act like you have the superior opinion when you are not an insider. Shooting others down to make yourself feel better smacks of insecurity.
Greenberg
And what if it turns out it is an unstable situation? You don’t know anymore than him.
Why wouldn’t they just say he’s taking a leave for family illness? I think they would pay him if that’s the case. The fact the Tigers are unwilling to pay him might be a clue to what’s going on.
SportsFan0000
You don’t know his situation. It has been kept confidential.
It could be a situation with his Mom, his father, one of his sibs, his grandparents etc….No one knows but him and the team management and Front Office.
Stone Cold Steve Austin
Come on buddy. Detroit isn’t anything special
GarryHarris
Then don’t.
Mystery Team
unclemike1525 you seem to be a moron but I’m still not quite sure do you think you can clear it up for us?
Greenberg
How do you know any better than him? Maybe he wasn’t fully vetted. Does the name Jordan Zimmerman mean anything to you?
I’m not saying they did or did not vet him, but with Al’s track record it’s not out there f the realm of possibility that he did a poor job evaluating him. Other than drafting pitchers, Al has poor instincts.
GarryHarris
He made his opinion known and you call it stupid because it doesn’t match yours. Many fans are tired of Avila’s act and it’s just another heavy straw.
We don’t even know what he is restricted for. However, I agree that the Tigers botched this one. They signed him very quickly when there were reasons the BoSox didn’t make him a priority.
I really hate mindless Sycophant followers.
Mystery Team
Hey look another moron.

He’s not getting paid while on this list.

Let’s just hope he’s ok and his family is ok.

Man, nothing is going the tigers way this year
amk1920
The Tigers spent 77 million on a crapshoot pitcher that went horribly wrong, passed on Marcelo Mayer for a high school pitcher so they could pay Baez. They were in such good shape and a bad GM ruined it
Airo13
I think Mayer may have chosen his own team to sign with. Reports that he only wanted to go to a big market team. May have threatened signability concerns to the other teams at the top. I’m happy to wait and see on Jobe.
seamaholic 2
This. I’d put the chances that Mayer finagled himself to Boston at over 80%. That stuff happens all the time.
HalosHeavenJJ
That’s such a big gamble, though. Slot bonus at the top of the draft is life changing money. To really turn that down and go to college would be tough.
I know players talk big sometimes, but to actually go through with it would take huge stones. I can only think of Gerrit Cole.
Motown is My Town
Another “smart” comment from the “fellowship of the miserable”…is someone mlb trade rumors offering a deal for totally out of line comments today?
amk1920
My team is in the other league. I can assure you this isn’t some conspiracy to hate on the Detroit Tigers. They made a good move with Hinch but haven’t come close to taking the next step. Explain to me how either guy is worth that contract?
Mystery Team
Rodriguez is cheap compared to some of the silly deals we’re seeing these days. Hell the Angels paid Rendon like he was Lou Gehrig. Rodriguez isn’t even getting $20 million per season he was well worth the gamble. Now if you want to talk about Baez well that’s another story.
Crab L. Winston
1. They signed Jobe for more than Mayer signed for.
2. I’m extremely confident that an unwillingness to offer a few hundred thousand dollars more for Mayer, if that were the difference between him signing in Detroit or not, had nothing to do with them “saving” to give $140 million to Baez as seems to be your point. Given that they paid Jobe more, I doubt money was the issue. Kids do their best to dictate where they go in the draft. That’s a much more likely scenario here.
3. Marcelo Mayer is a 19 year old in A ball. Jackson Jobe is also a 19 year old in A ball. Let’s take a deep breath before we dump Jobe into the abyss of anonymity while propping Mayer up onto a throne.
hitztheball
Plus they drafted their high school SS in the 2nd round. He is currently leading the team in HR & RBI’s
Luke Strong
I agree, they made poor signings. They could have been competitive with the right guys. Story was the most obvious fit at SS, and they could have traded for Montas and saved a bunch of money on mediocre starters from the FA pool.
stymeedone
Its not like Mayer is currently tearing up the big leagues. Regardless of who they picked, Detroit was going to need a SS this year. That bad GM is the same GM that got them in good shape. They will be fine next year, assuming the injury bug doesn’t bite so badly.
Mystery Team
stymeedone I think these fans want Dombrowski back so he can trade away the entire minor league system for a bunch of well over paid over the hill vets that will set the team back another ten years.
LordD99
Hopefully the issue is short term and all will be well.
HalosHeavenJJ
Like others I hope this turns out alright for him.
bobsugar84
Long-Covid.
tiger9
What next for the Tigers in 2022?
This is unreal.
warnbeeb
I don’t know how the restricted list works but this does not seem like a mutual decision. I’d guess it’s a meaningful issue to ERod but the Tigers appear to act like this is going to last a while.
I’m reading between the lines and believe the Tigers were not going to make him play but don’t want pay him while he figures out what he wants to do. It does not appear to be physical.
User 163535993
The restricted list is basically a way to stash a 40 man player who is rehabbing an injury or not able to play to free up a 40 man slot. The Cubs put Chris Martin on it briefly when his bereavement time elapsed because you can only be on it 7 days and they let him have more. Doesn’t necessarily mean no pay so the Tigers must be mad. It’s used basically in the Minor Leagues.
TheTrotsky
You really don’t know what you’re talking about.
User 163535993
A player on the bereavement list can be replaced on the 40 man until he’s back. After 7 days he has to be reinstated. Martin took longer. The Cubs let him have more time but needed a P so they put him on the restricted list. What part didn’t you get or was it all of it. Call Biden to schedule your class.
Fever Pitch Guy
Paying a player while on the Restricted List is an option, not a requirement. It’s an excused absence, if the Tigers were angry about the situation it wouldn’t be excused and the contract could potentially be voided.
Greenberg
Sorry, but being angry at a player is not grounds for voiding a contract.
HalosHeavenJJ
I’d imagine if it was physical E-rod would want to be placed on the IL and the union would back him. Players still get paid on the IL.
Fever Pitch Guy
The restricted list is when you’re physically able to play, but don’t for personal reasons such as drug addiction, family issues, or psychological issues. Or if they don’t want to get vaccinated and their team is playing in Toronto.
User 163535993
Thought it could be used for injury also. Thanks. Non baseball injuries I mean.
Rick Wilkins
You should stop for tonight Michael. Tomorrow is a new day, full of possibilities, and new articles for you to expose yourself on. You’ve done enough damage to yourself for one day.
Motown is My Town
Roy…uncle Mike clearly doesn’t get it and doesn’t want to listen to any reality checks..guess this is what trolls who live in their parents basement do all day. At least you tried to help hm from himself so kudos for your valiant efforts
User 163535993
I’m on a Tigers board talking to a lot of idiots. It is tiring talking to twits.
Rick Wilkins
You should go to sleep then if you’re tired. The drowsiness is probably contributing to your stupid comments. You’re not really talking to anyone anyway. Spouting off ridiculous statements, and getting owned by the replies, isn’t really talking to people. You’re a troll. You lost to the internet tonight. Catch the L, and go to bed!!!
YankeesBleacherCreature
I’m warming up his milk bottle.
TroyVan
So, there’s another development that is very interesting. Lloyd McLendon in out indefinitely at Toledo.
Could the two have had some sort of disagreement? The secrecy is the same for both, with both announcements just a day apart.
Hmmmmm.
TroyVan
McClendon is the manager of Toledo, where E-Rod has been rehabbing. He last started on Thursday. MClendon was first absent on Sunday.
User 163535993
So which one is pregnant? Oh sorry, That’s insensitive right?
TroyVan
Has to be McClendon. E-Rod is a pitcher.
tigerfan1968
genuinely funny …
Greenberg
I thought you were joking at first. Now that is very interesting to me and I’m starting to wonder if there’s a major dysfunction in the organization that goes beyond incompetence. There’s just a weird feeling about this organization this year. It feels like something is very wrong and no one wants to say anything. The odds of a whole team not hitting for 60 games and countless injuries are astronomical, I have to wonder if proper mechanics are not being taught in the minors and coolbaugh is just a terrible coach, but I think it goes beyond that. Even Alex Avila when asked about the hitting said that Leon Durham was a really good coach, but made no mention of coolbaugh.
I think Al has massive blind spots and is not aware of them. I think he can identify young pitching talent, but has little insight elsewhere.
jeffk-2
I heard Eduardo and his wife unfollowed each other in socials. So probably Divorce.
sergefunction
You are a good Internet Detective..
Published report out of NY just now verified the issue is marital woe.
Arnold Ziffel
Well, I found this particular a bit more interesting than watching reruns of Gilligan’s Island, But, for the record, every team has knuckleheads for fans.
Greenberg
The timing of this and the lack of information is suspicious to me. As soon as they want to bring him back, he has personal matters. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m not sure he wants to be here. None of us know anything, but I hope I’m wrong.
yankeeinil
If this were a family or mental health situation the Tigers wouldn’t be withholding his salary, and no way would the union agree to it. This has gotta be an internal conflict of some sort between E-Rod and/or coaches/management.
GoldenJabs
Welcome to Detox E-Rod
SportsFan0000
The Tigers have had the “season from hell”….
Everything that could go wrong, has gone very wrong and much, much more.
If it is just bad luck, then the Tigers should be back in the AL Central race as early
as ’23. If not, then they may need to clean house, again.
No matter how good Avila is in some areas, he needs to show some tangible on the field results in ’23-24,,,like a major turnaround and many of his farm system players breaking through at the big league level along with the current MLB players or it could be adios to Big Al.
I am not against Al Avila. He has done some good things for the team and franchise.
And, he could still get this ship righted and this team in contention by ’23-’24….
AJ has “opt outs” and won’t stay unless the team has the talent to compete.
AJ can get a job anywhere like Anaheim, Philly etc…where he could win quickly.
Chris Illitch has a big decision to make by
Aug-Sept ’23 as to whether the team is on the right track or not…
Then ,he must act accordingly.
Rsox
A.J. isn’t winning “quickly” in Anaheim
