The Mariners have acquired first baseman/designated hitter Carlos Santana and cash from the Royals in exchange for right-handers Wyatt Mills and William Fleming, per a team announcement. The trade paves the road for the Royals to take an overdue look at top prospect Vinnie Pasquantino, whose contract has been formally selected from Triple-A Omaha, according to the team. Right-hander Ronald Bolanos has been designated for assignment in order to open a spot on Kansas City’s 40-man roster.
Monday’s trade closes the book on a generally underwhelming Kansas City tenure for Santana, who inked a two-year, $17.5MM contract in advance of the 2021 season but has yet to round into the form that made him such a valuable contributor for years in Cleveland. The switch-hitting 36-year-old tallied 871 plate appearances with the Royals and posted just a .215/.326/.341 batting line — about 12% worse than league-average after weighting for park and league, by measure of wRC+.
Santana managed to turn things around in recent weeks, however, and has shown enough this month for the Mariners to take a low-cost look now that they suddenly find themselves in need of a first baseman. Ty France, Seattle’s most consistent hitter this season, recently landed on the injured list and figures to be out for a good bit longer than that 10-day minimum, given the diagnosis of a Grade 2 flexor strain. Santana shouldn’t be expected to fully replace France’s brilliant .316/.390/.476 batting line, but he’s managed a .298/.405/.468 output himself over his past 27 games and 111 plate appearances.
In all likelihood, the Royals are paying the vast majority of what remains on Santana’s contract. He’s still owed the balance of this year’s $10.5MM salary (about $5.8MM), and that number will increase based on plate appearances. Santana, who already has 212 plate appearances this season, will earn an additional $75K for every 25th plate appearance from 300 to 525.
It’s not the first time the Mariners have acquired Santana, though whenever he takes the field in a Mariners jersey, it’ll be his first actual game with the team. Seattle actually acquired Santana alongside J.P. Crawford in the deal that sent Jean Segura, Juan Nicasio and James Pazos to the Phillies back in Dec. 2018. However, not two weeks later, Santana was traded to Cleveland in the three-team swap that brought Edwin Encarnacion to Seattle. Encarnacion spent a half season slugging as the Mariners’ designated hitter before being flipped to the Yankees for righty Juan Then.
This time around, it’ll be a pair of right-handers going to Kansas City in exchange for the final three-plus months of control over Santana. Of the two righties in question, only Mills has big league experience thus far. The 27-year-old has pitched a total of 21 1/3 frames over the past two seasons but struggled to a 7.59 ERA with worse-than-average strikeout and walk rates in that time (17.3% and 10.2%, respectively).
Mills, the No. 93 overall pick in 2017, has more interesting but also inconsistent numbers in the upper minors. The sidearming righty fanned a whopping 44.7% of his opponents through 28 2/3 innings of Triple-A ball last year, for instance, but that rate has been halved so far in 2022 over the course of 19 2/3 innings. There’s no velocity change between his ’21 and ’22 campaigns, though Mills did throw more fastballs at the expense of some slider usage during this year’s small sample of 8 2/3 big league innings. The 6’4″ righty has never ranked as one of the Mariners’ very best prospects, but Baseball America has listed him among Seattle’s top 25 farmhands dating back to the time he was drafted.
Fleming, meanwhile, is a 23-year-old righty whom the Mariners selected in the 11th round just one year ago. He generally hasn’t been considered among the Mariners’ best prospects either — though FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen did tab him 28th earlier this year — and has posted fairly pedestrian numbers in Class-A Modesto despite being a former college arm who’s older than his average opponent at that level. So far, Fleming has tossed 67 2/3 innings over 14 starts and logged a 4.92 ERA with a 20.7% strikeout rate against an 8.4% walk rate.
For the Royals, the arms received in exchange for Santana are secondary when it comes to this trade. The greater purpose of the swap was to at last open playing time for the 6’4″, 245-pound Pasquantino, who has mashed his way into top prospect status by dominating at every minor league stop, including Triple-A this season. So far, Pasquantino has taken 296 turns at the plate for the Storm Chasers and posted a huge .280/.372/.576 batting line with 18 home runs, 16 doubles two triples and more walks (37) than strikeouts (36).
Given his size and lack of speed, Pasquantino is locked into a first base-only (or designated hitter) profile, but there’s every indication so far that his bat will play in the Majors. Scouting reports at Baseball America and FanGraphs indicate that he’s improved enough with the glove to be average or slightly better, and Pasquantino has never posted an OBP lower than .371 or a slugging percentage lower than .560 at any minor league level. And, given the dearth of strikeouts in his game, he’s been able to maintain a .293 average throughout his minor league tenure to date.
Even without much defensive value to prop up his value, Pasquantino ranks as the game’s No. 57 prospect over at Baseball America. He checks in 95th at FanGraphs and 98th at MLB.com, with all three scouting reports praising his plus (or better) hit tool and above-average power.
The organizational hope is that between Pasquantino and fellow slugger Nick Pratto — also a first base-only, top-100 prospect — they’ll have their first base and DH slots covered for years to come. Pasquantino’s promotion to the Majors is late enough that he should avoid Super Two status, and he’ll be controllable for at least six full seasons beyond the current campaign.
As for the 25-year-old Bolanos, he’s seen action with Kansas City in each of the past three seasons but has posted pedestrian numbers on the whole. Once a notable Padres signing out of Cuba, he was traded to the Royals alongside Franchy Cordero in the 2020 trade that sent Tim Hill to San Diego. He’s since combined for 28 1/3 innings of 4.76 ERA ball with a lackluster 24-to-17 K/BB ratio.
Bolanos does have a respectable 4.42 ERA in 18 1/3 innings this year, but his average fastball of 93.6 mph is down about two miles per hour from its peak and that ERA comes in spite of an even number of walks to strikeouts. Add in that he’s limped to a 5.49 ERA in 19 2/3 Triple-A frames this season, and it was enough for the Royals to decide they’re willing to move on. Of course, the DFA doesn’t necessarily spell the end of his time in the organization. Kansas City will have a week to trade Bolanos if there’s interest, but the Royals can also attempt to pass him through outright waivers at some point in the next week. If he goes unclaimed, he’d remain with the organization but no longer occupy a spot on the 40-man roster.

Ty France is hurt and can be used as our DH
Sunday Lasagna
Because he gets on base. All we are looking at is his on base percentage. France has a 362 career OBP, Santana a 361 career OBP. Santana gets on base. Do we care if if he gets a hit or a walk? No, we don’t. When France comes back, Santana replaces Toro as the DH.
kc38
I like the money all reference. Don’t make me point at Pete
ayrbhoy
The Ms already draw the 4th most BB’s in MLB he will fit in nicely. That is of course if he is ‘past 27 games Santana’ and not ‘pre last 27g version’- Santana had about a .160 BA for nearly the first 2 mo’s of the season
Stevil
Santana suddenly started making hard contact on June 1st. His slash line is even more impressive since then.
Seattle obviously needs to do more, but this didn’t really cost them anything. Mills didn’t have much job security and may have been next on the DFA list anyway.
martevious
And he is a huge upgrade over Toro, at DH. It is embarrassing that the M’s regularly have Toro and Moore in their lineup
Stevil
Moore offers excellent defense and has a 135 wRC+ against lefties. He’s an asset for Seattle as a role player, which is why we’ve kind of seen him in a loose platoon with Trammell.
Santana will replace Ellis or Padlo, though it probably should be Toro.
BuyBuyMets
His “getting on base” has resulted in 17 runs scored.
He also plugs up the bases.
myaccount2
Seems like his 17 runs scored is the fault of the batters hitting after him who can’t hit their way out of a paper bag.
Cosmo2
Yea thinking that he’s responsible for how often he scores once on base is insanely absurd. Childish even.
Cosmo2
It’s a good move. It patches things up for now without compromising the future
dadofdonnydownvote
I’m surprised Bobby Witt Jr isn’t getting more all star votes.
Dorothy_Mantooth
There are way too many good SS in the American League for Witt to garner All Star votes over the established stars at the position. It also doesn’t help that he plays for the last place Royals, so he gets very little national television or press coverage. He’s trending towards becoming an All Star but that probably won’t happen until 2024 at the earliest. YTD, his bWar is only 1.1 so he’s not really separating himself from other above average players in the game right now either.

Trader Jerry just couldn’t help himself here. The fact that he had to give up two pitching prospects certainly points to the Royals paying most, if not all of Santana’s remaining salary for 2022. If this was a salary dump then the Royals would have sent a prospect Seattle’s way just to get the money off their books.
Hopefully, Santana can remain hot at the plate for Seattle but it’s highly unlikely he will be able to replace France’s offensive productivity in their lineup. France might be the one Mariner who has exceeded his 2022 offensive projections (along with Crawford maybe?) Most of their other players have failed to meet expectations so far this year season; this is why Seattle is struggling so much. Their pitching has been good enough to make them a wild card contender so it’s the offense that has really dragged this team down. Maybe Santana’s plate discipline can rub off on some of the other players on the team. Kyle Schwarber had a significant impact on other Red Sox hitters last season after he was acquired so perhaps Santana can have a similar impact in Seattle and help rescue their lost season. Trader Jerry strikes again!!!
Angels & NL West
Dorothy, as you point out, Santana brings excellent plate discipline to Seattle. That said, the M’s are #3 in MLB in walks (2 behind LAD and 3 behind NYY) and Winker is #1 in the AL. Santana has hit LHP well so I’m guessing he will be the short side of a platoon.
Stevil
Does anybody realize that Mills was a DFA candidate and Flemming is in his second year at single-A and has been struggling to miss bats?
Any salary Seattle absorbs here is a win for KC. If Santana provides the kind of plate discipline he’s known for and was finally showing this month, it’s a win for Seattle.
Santana isn’t replacing France. He’s filling in. One look at the alternatives and it should be obvious why Seattle made this move.
duffys cliff
Because Ty France is hurt and they need someone to play first base until he returns? Seems pretty clear to me.

There was a point earlier this season when in 125 PA Santana had more walks than hits. He was unplayable for three months.
BuddyBoy
The season isn’t even three months old and by all accounts, after April he’s been solid and even very good in June. I think you’re being a bit hypberbolic
Angels & NL West
April and May were pretty rough for Santana. He slashed 169/270/277 in May which was a step up from April, but far from solid. At that rate, and without his June streak, this trade isn’t made.
TLB2001
.127 in April .160 in May and yes he’s had a big June but also literally 20% of his hits in June came in one game.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@TLB2001 – Boom, roasted!
ayrbhoy
Injuries and desperation to climb back into the fight for the 3rd WC forced the M’s to overpay. Injuries to their All-Star level 1B and the GG 1B who is in AAA recovering from injury took away all leverage in their negotiations- its the price u pay
BuddyBoy
Overpay? A garbage reliever and an old for level starter with mediocre stuff is an overpay?
ayrbhoy
No, you’re right but the amount of money that Seattle had to pay for Santana is. Besides- you and I don’t know for certain whether the submariner Wyatt Mills is garbage or not. The Royals will have about 5 years to find the answer to that question.
martevious
Not really. The M’s need a bat. And we didn’t really give KC anything special
LordD99
You also didn’t get a bat.
TLB2001
For two months he has more walks than hits. He would’ve been more valuable if he just left his bat in the dugout and hoped the pitcher missed four times.
msqboxer
Haven’t looked up the splits but I’m assuming Santana does some damage against righthanders?
Angels & NL West
Santana is a switch hitter and has been very good vs LHP. The overwhelming majority of his PAs are against RHP, but his success has come against LHP where his OPS is .240 points higher. The M’s may use him as the weak side of a platoon.
LarsAnderson
Ty France is hurt and can be used as our DH
24TheKid
This does not move me.
kcmark
It moved Santana.
ayrbhoy
24- ‘my M’s’ are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Ty France’s surprisingly good D at 1B has forced them to just go after a temporary fill in at First. They also cant use too much trade capital on a 1B replacement. If they find themselves back in the hunt for the 3rd WC they will need to have trade bait to have any chance to further improve their roster. That is of course assuming Santana improves the current roster. Shouldnt be hard to improve on Padlo/Moore/Toro 1B share.
The M’s do have a much easier 2nd half schedule as well as Haniger and Lewis returning in a couple weeks. Hopefully Ty France returns by mid July so its not an impossible climb.
martevious
It might be a temporary fill-in at 1B, but Santana can be our DH after France gets back. Even with his horrible start to the year he is an upgrade over several of the guys we trot out there.
ayrbhoy
Upgrade for sure! Lewis and Haniger took early BP today though- when they (and France) come back you have to think their power and ability to bring in RISP will take away Santana’s chance to play regularly at DH
Phillies2017
Ok, not a bad deal on either side. Royals get salary relief, a lottery ticket and Mills’ whose minor league numbers and peripheral statistics suggest that he could become a reasonable middle reliever. They also get to try out a prospect. The M’s get a rental who can get on base. .349 OBP isn’t bad for that package and at roughly $5 million remaining on his deal, this is a good deal all around.
ayrbhoy
.405 OBP over that last 27g is even better!
Samuel
The groupthink of MLBTR writers (can tell by the snide comments in their articles…including this one) was that Santana should have been DFA’ed 5-6 weeks ago.
Twice I wrote that was nonsense. Santana was the Royals 2nd or 3rd highest paid player and they were in no position to eat that contract. They would play him in hopes that he got hot and a team would want him.
So the coaching staff worked with Santana (MLB is not rotisserie or computer baseball). I believe his OPS in June was .990. They got a team to take his salary, and a couple of bodies to work with.
This is why Dayton Moore runs the Baseball Ops Dept. of a ML franchise, and the writers here look at spreadsheets and play SJW advocates (it ain’t their money).
Silas
you poor thing
Randomuser4567
Do you think what you said refutes his point? Both of those statements can be true at the same time
Dorothy_Mantooth
@Phillies2007 – All signs point to the Royals paying the majority of Santana’s remaining salary so they most likely get very little salary relief in this deal. The Royals do get two lottery ticket pitchers and more importantly, the necessary room on their roster to call up one of their top prospects. I do agree it’s a good deal for both sides as I don’t believe Seattle had either pitcher they traded on their radar anytime soon to help out in the majors going forward. Mills had already ‘failed’ and the other young kid isn’t really impressing at A ball either. The Royals can try to turn Mills around and can be patient with the second prospect as well, but the biggest part of this trade is opening the space on the Royals roster for their first base prospect to take over.
Lumps of Cole
Cots this morning has Seattle covering $1.5 M with Kansas City eating the rest ($4,269,231).

I guess what the Mariners have to look forward to is whether Winker or Santana lead the team in walks. Why why why Dipoto? Santana hasn’t been relevant in years.
JoeBrady
He was relevant in June, and at this point, that’s all that counts. Seattle is 7 games out of the last playoff slot, and is in 12th place in the AL, tied with Baltimore. I like this as a low-risk, low-reward effort to improve. Trying to acquire a big-name player, at a big-time cost, would be foolish imo.
ayrbhoy
Have you seen Santana’s 200 wRC+ last 27 games? You have to remember this April and first half of May was freezing cold in the Midwest. Many cold Winter weather cities like Chicago had record cold Aprils- I’m sure you know how this bitter cold affects a batters swing and the balls trajectory. Its the main reason why the median MLB BA was .228 after the first month of the yr
Dock_Elvis
Part of the issue in KC wasn’t just being cold. It was the wild weather swings that happened through May. It’d be nice, then crash and be 50…and that was almost until Memorial Day. THEN it got back go being its regular summer 100° sauna.
ayrbhoy
Interesting weather- that sounds a lot like the weather at my brother in laws house in Boulder Co. That massive mountain range causes some crazy changes in weather patterns eh?

Cano is available as long as you can trade for his Padres minor league contract.
CNichols
Cano looked brutal in SD. Can’t imagine them really asking for anything to just assume his contract.
He’s currently sporting a .715 OPS in El Paso which is awful considering the offensive environment there and who he is. He’s there for a reason, he doesn’t belong on an MLB team right now.
HalosHeavenJJ
Pretty solid move to immediately fill a need without spending much to do so.
I do hope France’s injury isn’t too bad. The kid has a bright future.
ayrbhoy
Halo HeavenJJ- yes, although this move is a decent filler for the Ms it scares me that my M’s think they have to trade young players to fill Ty’s spot. Makes me think Ty might be out for much longer. Injuries have killed that M’s lineup this yr already- Haniger and Kyle Lewis’s absence is the reason why they’ve stranded the most RISP in MLB
martevious
The young players they traded were no loss to us

Take a look at Santanas on base percentage over the last 15 games… It’s one of the highest in the league
ayrbhoy
If you look at Fangraphs splits leaderboard you’d also see from 6/1 Carlos Santana has the 7th highest wRC+ (198) in all of MLB. His wOBA is .449 Thats better than Trout, Devers, and fellow 1B Alonso and Vladdy.
ExileInLA 2
As a Mets fan, I was hoping that SEA would be interested in Dom Smith…
Flyby
i was wondering why dom wasnt thought of. At minimum, he is a solid defender at 1st and then can move to dh and hopefully the pop and average comes back for a cheap price and i think atleast 1 or 2 more passes through arb.
ayrbhoy
Dom Smith would certainly be an improvement. However the M’s already have a congested DH group- when Mitch Haniger and Kyle Lewis return their injury history will force them to split the DH spot. The M’s will then have 3-4 players sharing the DH spot when those 2 return. As much as I’d like to see his bat in the lineup It doesnt make sense for them to go after Dom Smith.
martevious
When Mitch Haniger and Kyle Lewis return, they should be traded ASAP. They will always be hurt.
Cosmo2
What does Seattle do with Smith after France comes back? I get that as a Met fan you want Smith gone but one issue at a time.
Flyby
I guess my question for you is what will Seattle do with Santana when France comes back? Sanatana is either 1st or DH.
I would like to keep Dom but at this point with this roster construction there is no real place for him for regular play and i know it will bite us later because i think he will turn it around if he gets normal at bats. Dom would play 1b and DH and with the injury history both this year and prior with the mariners a day to day lf. Not great but if someone out for a day or two and not IL he could be out there just for coverage. He also would have probably came cheaper with probably the dfa reliever going to the mets as the only piece with doms value being down. On top of that control would be for a few years with arb if he turns it around.
I think Santana is on a hot streak and once that cools the M’s are stuck with him. and without regular playtime i think he reverts back to his early months of the year.
I know im talking peaks for dom and valleys for santana but my opinion on it.
Stevil
Santana has always been a low BABIP guy, but the first two months of this season were exceptionally low and might help explain why his start to the season was so bad. He probably is on a hot streak now, but he should give Seattle solid PAs even if he cools down.
I wondered myself if Smith should be a target for Seattle, but he isn’t dominating AAA the way you would like to see before a promotion/recall and there’s nothing to suggest NY is interested in selling low.
There’s really nothing to complain about here. KC is likely paying most of his salary, Seattle didn’t give up anyone significant, and nobody is blocked. If Lewis and Haniger both return to the active roster. Ellis & Padlo can be optioned and Upton hasn’t earned any job security.
There’s also the possibility of moving France to 2B, keeping Santana at 1B and platooning RF with Trammell and Haniger or Moore; DH duties split primarily between Lewis & Haniger.
RoyalInChicago
Thank goodness they got something in return. They’ve been playing him way too much to get nothing in return.
Fred Park
I think this is just a stop-gap move.
The trade deadline is still a ways in the future.
Depending on our standing later in July, we could see something big then.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Toro, but we have to haverun production better than he is capable of. So we have to try things like this.
Fred Park
More from Fred Park:
The first step to more run production is to keep getting men on base.
A walk is as good as a hit for that.
And then hope that timely hitting will finally follow. We need a good clutch hitter – a guy who can hit when the pressure is really on.
J.P. has done pretty fair in that regard. So has France. And I have high hopes for Taylor Trammel and more from our guy Julio.
You notice I don’t mention Haniger or Lewis. I think they are about done.

I think Seattle is looking short term they will need help when the suspensions come down. JP will get a long one Winker probably next then Julio. What hurt Seattle was 3 starters got the heave-ho. Crawford, Julio, winker. I know it was Early in the game, but a low scoring game; 1 big hit could have help Seattle. Actually probably more than that the way they’ve been hitting with runners in scoring position.

Wyatt’s got a funky deceptive delivery and some nice movement, he could be a good reliever for a long time. The other guy is a depth throw in with seemingly no plus impressive attribute.
Win win for both teams, the M’s are deep with young arms and Santana will help at first while Ty is out and a solid DH option when he gets back. This will likely mean the end of either Toro or Torrens getting any platoon work, and one or both will probably end up in Tacoma come august.

Yes, royals needed to bring up vinnie but they wanted to trade rather than DFA santana so they waited for a hot streak.
The return for santana isn’t much but if they had DFAd him they would have had to pay his whole salary and while they have to add money now too probably the Mariners at least pay like half of his remaining salary so by keeping down vinnie for another 5-6 weeks the royals might have saved like 2 millions or so.

It’s about time they called Vinnie P. up! What took them so long?

Santana hey, this is an emergency fill in so is there going to be some significant acquisitions?

Finally, a major trade.
Vinnie Pasquantino has good plate discipline and some power but may be more a DH than a 1B at this time. Both William Flemming and Wyatt Mills have been “Jekyl and Hyde” with “no middle ground”.
The Mariners MiLB looks thin at every position. Only 3B Ben Ramirez looks good but he’s a way off. If Carlos Santana can still play D, that will allow Ty Francis to work at DH when he returns to protect his recovery.

Major?

Anything that allows Ty Francis to lighten his load during recovery-rehab would be most welcome. Seems people are constantly saying “Lighten Up, Francis”

You do know the Ms farm is top 5 right?

Thank you Santana for having a good month of hitting. It would have sucked waiting until August 1st to get rid of you.

When Vinnie came to bat tonight, there was a standing ovation for a triple A prospect from KC fans. Good Luck Seattle.

Vinnie Joe Pasquinto.
I always liked Goodfellas.
Just a little violent, but great movie.
