The Reds reinstated infielders Jonathan India and Mike Moustakas from the injured list and recalled southpaw Reiver Sanmartin before tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks. Corner outfielder Aristides Aquino is headed to the 10-day injured list due to a left calf strain, while infielders Colin Moran and Alejo López have been optioned to Triple-A Louisville.
India has been on the IL for the past six weeks due to a right hamstring issue. He’s been limited to just 11 games thus far, one of myriad reasons the Reds have a disappointing 21-39 record. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year, India is coming off an excellent .269/.376/.459 showing through 631 plate appearances. India had been targeting a return for the upcoming weekend series against the Brewers, but it seems he’s progressed a bit better than anticipated.
Moustakas, meanwhile, spent a week on the COVID-19 injured list. He also missed some time in April because of a biceps strain, but he’s played fairly regularly when healthy. The left-handed hitter is amidst a second straight underwhelming campaign, owner of a .200/.314/.308 slash with three home runs across 153 trips to the dish. India’s return could cut into the reps for Moustakas, as Brandon Drury figures to see more time at the hot corner with India manning the keystone.
While Moustakas was on the virus list, he hadn’t occupied a spot on the 40-man roster. Now that he’s been reinstated, the club needed to create a 40-man vacancy. They’ve done so by transferring outfielder Jake Fraley from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list, officially ruling him out through at least the end of June.
Fraley, acquired from the Mariners as part of the Jesse Winker deal in Spring Training, went on the IL on May 1 with right knee inflammation. He headed out on a minor league rehab assignment late last month but was shut down while battling a toe issue (via Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer). The left-handed hitting Fraley has been limited to 15 games with his new club thus far, hitting just .116/.208/.233.

I wondered if Aquino got hurt sliding home yesterday. He was grimacing.

Mike Moustakas, another classic free agent signing.
Deadguy
So classic, in 3 years for the Reds his triple slash line is pathetic and look at all those dollars they are giving him? Bout as good as Heywards deal, or Fowlers deal

Give Scott Boras credit. That was a lush contract he convinced the Reds they absolutely had to give because they absolutely had to have Moose.
Cosmo2
Why give Boras the credit? Moustakis was overrated by half the league. I see no evidence that this was Boras’ doing. Players get paid. There are bad contracts everywhere, fans clamor for more. These contracts exist with or without agents. Agents do a big job, but fans way over exaggerate the influence of an agent like Boras on contract value.
JoeBrady
I agree. It is up to the GM to put a number on a player, and stick with it. If Bloom thinks the number for Bogaerts is $150M/6, then that is the numbers and he needs to stick with it.
When JD was a FA. DD gave him an offer, and spent about 2 months ignoring Boras saying that all these teams were interested in him. Same with the opt-outs. And with the opt-outs, it was amazing how many writers were mentioning how many teams were interested, even though he was obviously going nowhere.

Most of the Royals core was overrated individually. Eric Hosmer just might be the most overrated position player of this century.
Cosmo2
I think Hosmer has been vastly overrated by only a small number of folks. Just so happens that the owner of the Padres was one of them.
Dock_Elvis
@Cosmo2
His overrated status was less well known during his Royals days. Set intangibles aside I believe he was averaging around 1 WAR in KC. Lorenzo Cain was solid. KC was wise to let them move on. Fans HATED that.
Moneyballer
I often wonder if there is a verification process involved when transferring someone to the 60-day IL or if teams can just do it whenever they want. I feel like maybe a toe issue wouldn’t warrant a 2 month rehab and this was just a way to squeeze in another player to the 40-man.

Jessie Winker deal looking like a winner

I’m not defending the Reds’ FO, whom I regard poorly, but the results of their off-season “tanking”:
Barnhart $8M -0.4 bWAR
Castellanos $20M -0.3 bWAR
Miley $10M 0.5 WAR
Gray $10M 1.0 WAR
Suarez $11M 1.4 WAR
Winker $6M -0.7 WAR
Garrett ??? -0.3 WAR
My only complaint is that they did not do this a year earlier. But in regard to the “tanking” that writers lost their schitt over, they moved $45M with a combined 1.5 bWAR, in addition to not re-signing the always overrated Castellanos.

@Moneyballer – Transferring Fraley to the 60-day only extends the IL stint a few weeks, to the end of June. Not another 2 months. Article clearly says Fraley has been on the IL since May 1, and he had a rehab assignment shut down last month due to the toe issue.
Sure, you can make a case that teams manipulate the IL for roster reasons. But you can find far more egregious cases than this.
Moneyballer
Fair enough – just feel bad for fraley if he had worked his way back only to get this news.

Colin Moran headed to AAA, Corey Dickerson hasn’t been much better
