The Phillies have selected the contract of infielder Yairo Munoz from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and optioned center fielder Mickey Moniak back to Lehigh Valley in a corresponding 26-man roster move. Infielder Jean Segura was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Munoz. Segura suffered a broken finger a couple weeks back and is expected to miss up to 12 weeks of action as a result.
Munoz, 27, is hitting .319/.345/.454 in 172 plate appearances with the IronPigs so far in 2022. A solid utilityman with the Cardinals back in 2018, he’s struggled to recreate that year’s .276/.350/.413 output at the big league level. Munoz has consistently hit well against Triple-A pitching, though, and he’ll give the Phillies some additional infield cover with Segura, Johan Camargo and Nick Maton all on the injured list.
As for Moniak, the 24-year-old former No. 1 pick hasn’t gotten it going at the plate after getting a late start to the season due to a fractured hand suffered in Spring Training. He’s hit just .160/.250/.160 in a tiny sample of 25 plate appearances, and the Phils will give him a reset in Triple-A to try to get back on track there. At this point, it’s unlikely that Moniak ever matches the expectations so often associated with the top overall pick in the draft, but that doesn’t rule him out as a potentially useful contributor to the Phillies — either in 2022 or further down the road.

There is a grand conspiracy in South Philly.
It’s called the Philluminati.
The Philluminati want you to believe they have been doing everything they can to remain competitive since winning it all in 2008.
That’s not true. They’ve been milking fans for their dollars in exchange for hot dog water.
If you’re a so-called Phillies fan, jump overboard now. The ship is sinking. Captain Jack Sparrow can’t save you from this mess.
Teams to root for? How about the Braves, Mets, Dodgers or Cardinals. Hell, a couple buddies of mine Billy and Frank Bogus can even see how bogus this club is.
Get with the program dullards.

Yeah because the world would be so awesome if everyone rooted for 1 of 4 teams.
Your conspiracy fails to account for their $240MM payroll. That quite s lot to spend on hotdog water. If you want hotdog water then look at their cross-state rivals. Phillies FO isn’t trying to fool anyone, they just aren’t great at their jobs.
VonPurpleHayes
“Phillies FO isn’t trying to fool anyone, they just aren’t great at their jobs.” The sting of truth hurts the most.

The Pirates, who’ve had much more success more recently than the Phillies?
Phillies are dollar store hot dog water.

Dollar store hotdog water?
Have you ever been to a store for humans?

If your only interest is in rooting for successful teams, why not just wait until after the WS is over, and then root for the winner that winner. Wait a couple of days and then you can decide if you are a Celtic fan or not.

Last time I heard rhetoric like that it was spewing from the keyboard of a poster formally known as Free_AEC aka Casey’s Partner as well as other names I have forgotten.
I have been hoping that guy went back to prison. Please tell me you aren’t him.

It’s mainly players who received their education through a public school system that wind up getting optioned.

What?

Ain’t this the same guy that literally walked away from the Cardinals cause they optioned him and he wasn’t happy about it?
VonPurpleHayes
Moniak was optioned, not Munoz.
Rsox
He means Munoz. Munoz left the Cardinals in spring training 2020 after disagreeing with being sent down, thus ending is tenure with the Cardinals.
Munoz has done nothing but hit in the minors the last couple of seasons, .308 at Worcester last year and .319 so at AAA so far this year
Cards78
Yep it is! I can’t believe he keeps getting looks after quitting. He just walked away from the Cards.
VonPurpleHayes
It looked like Moniak put it together this year. He had a monster spring, got injured, and then tore it up in the minors during his rehab. Sadly, it seems he can’t hit major league pitching.
allphilly
Specifically curve balls. Poor Mickey embarrassed himself yesterday.
Sunday Lasagna
If the Rays dangle Kiermaier or Margot at the trade deadline to make playing time for Josh Lowe, either can go get it in the outfield better than most and it’s worth any shortcomings in the batters box for a defensively challenged team.
Samuel
Matt Vierling and Odubel Herrera can play CF fine….and Vierling has upside. Solid player.
Moniak was sent down because the Phillies will be facing LH pitchers the next 4 games, so Moniak wouldn’t be playing anyway. They want him to get AB’s. He’ll be brought back in the next week or so.
Before the deadline the Phillies will probably be looking for at least one more pitcher – preferably a starter. Ranger Suarez us far more effective out of the bullpen.
When it was a game.
Really should spend the rest of the year in AAA. Still needs some work and at 24 the time is now. The yoyo back and forth is not doing anyone any favors. Same with Jo Adell.
carlpagano
Who would want to root for the Mets, lol. They are a joke, haven’t won anything in 35 years and definitely don’t have a championship squad now
VonPurpleHayes
If you judge teams solely based on championship wins, then you’re likely going to be a pretty depressed fan most of the time. I dislike the Mets, but in the grand scheme of things, they’ve been a pretty decent team over the last decade or so. There have been better. There have been worse. No big deal.
Rsox
True. By that logic the Mariners, Rangers, Padres, Rays, and Rockies wouldn’t have any fans because they have never won any championships.
Saying the Mets “definitely don’t have a championship squad now”, the team they have now is not necessarily the team they will have in August/September. No one thought the Braves had a championship team last year, and definitely no one thought the Nationals had one in 2019. Still a long way to go
Cosmo2
Haven’t won anything in 35 years? First of all, I guess your definition of anything is a WS victory cuz the Mets have won a lot, just not a WS. Second, there’s 30 teams in the league. Only one can win a year. Do the math on this if you can. Lastly, I gotta laugh at folks who are so obsessed with hating the Mets. Hate them more than they root for their own team.
David Kupsick
They are playing winning baseball without Scherzer and deGrom..
badco44
He looked fairly decent while he had short stints in Boston. And had fairly good plate discipline, I hope he does well with Philly!
Rsox
He was raking at AAA last year and still couldn’t crack the Sox roster so i have to wonder if there is an attitude/ego problem holding him back
Cosmo2
Are you referring to Munoz? Although he batted over .300 the rest of his stets are very bleh. Especially for the minors. Those stats don’t translate into a very good minor league hitter.
JoeBrady
He wasn’t really raking that much. He had 8 HRs in 351 ABs with a 53/17 K/W. That’s not really all that much in AAA at age 26.
Rsox
35 game hitting streak at any level is pretty good. Munoz is a super utility type that could be productive if given a chance. No one said he was Ted Williams but he’s certainly better than Arauz, who they kept bringing up last year
Cosmo2
Hitting streaks are a terrible way to evaluate a player. A lot of luck involved. Player is what their overall stats say they are. He’s not a very good hitter but he is valuable. He’s good enough of a hitter considering his positional value.

there were problems in st. louis. he went AWOL.
DarkSide830
Yes and yes. Yairo id a good hitter and versitile. Moniak can’t hit.
Poster formerly known as . . .
“He’s hit just .160/.250/.160 in a tiny sample of 25 plate appearances”
Tiny sample is right. Ohtani was batting .160 with a .360 OPS through his first 25 plate appearances this year. Betts was batting .217 with a .554 OPS through his first 25 PA. Harper was batting .143 with a .641 OPS through his first 26 PA.
BTW, Moniak had 29 PA, not 25. He had 25 AB.
Thairo Estrada never got a real shot with the Yankees with only 121 PA through two seasons. Now he owns a 106 OPS+ with the Giants.
Poster formerly known as . . .
I hasten to add that Moniak has never shown any signs of being anywhere near the level of the hitters cited above. Just saying, 29 PA is a tiny sample for anybody.

munoz hasn’t had a chance to replicate his 2018 stats in the majors
Cap & Crunch
I’ve always liked Micheal A Taylor, he’d look great in Philly the next 1.5 yrs and can probably be had super cheap
*Royals are tricky to deal with tho
Rsox
One thing the Royals have is OF/1B depth so any deal would have to involve pitching and I’m not sure what the Phillies have even at the mid-to-low level side
DarkSide830
they can have Luis Garcia
Cap & Crunch
I mean honestly I don’t think it should/would take much
Bigger problem I see is the sentimentality Royals hold towards “their dudes”….and MAT seems to be one of them

It was like watching Girardi manage the pitching staff all over again. Tough loss
VonPurpleHayes
At the end of the day, relievers need to get outs and Realmuto should be able to catch an easy pop-up. I get that we wanted to leave Eflin in, but if you’re relievers can’t get 6 outs when you’re up by 4 then nothing can be done.

I wonder how long it takes for Munoz to leave the Phillies for good without telling anyone.
Cosmo2
So I guess that’s the personality problems folks are referring to. I don’t know that full story but I guess teams should be wary.
VonPurpleHayes
To be honest, I’m surprised more Phillies players don’t do that. Few teams lose in more agonizing ways.
longines64
Time for Brogdon to get a crack at closing IF he can mentally handle it.
VonPurpleHayes
I think when your pen is inconsistent, defined roles shouldn’t be a thing. Brogdon, Hand and Dominguez should be our late inning trio without a defined closer. It should be situational.
Rsox
In todays game (especially) bullpen by committee doesn’t work. Cora has played that with the Sox and because of that the Sox bullpen has been awful. Tanner Houck has been named the Closer so hopefully that solidifies things. Throwing s*** against the wall to see what sticks will lead to even more blown games from the bullpen
VonPurpleHayes
@Rsox I think it depends on your roster. The Phillies don’t really have anyone reliable. They’ve all failed for the most part. So I think forcing a designated closer with this pathetic group of arms is a mistake. Now as I mentioned, I do like Brogdon, and Dominguez and maybe even Hand, but I don’t think any of them is good enough to be a shutdown closer yet.
