Major League Baseball has handed down 12 suspensions arising from yesterday’s bench-clearing brawl between the Angels and Mariners. The league also handed out undisclosed fines. Nine of the individuals disciplined are from the Angels, while the Mariners lose a trio of players. The discipline is as follows:
Angels
- Interim manager Phil Nevin: Ten games
- Third baseman Anthony Rendon: Five games
- Assistant pitching coach Dom Chiti: Five games
- Right-hander Andrew Wantz: Three games
- Right-hander Ryan Tepera: Two games
- Right-hander Raisel Iglesias: Two games
- Bench coach Ray Montgomery: Two games
- Interpreter Manny del Campo: Two games
- Catching coach Bill Haselman: One game
Mariners
- Outfielder Jesse Winker: Seven games
- Shortstop J.P. Crawford: Five games
- Outfielder Julio Rodríguez: Two games
The fight occurred during yesterday afternoon’s contest (video link). Wantz, who opened the game for the Halos, threw a pitch behind Rodríguez in the first inning. That came on the heels of the Angels taking umbrage to an up-and-in offering from Erik Swanson to Mike Trout the night before, and it resulted in warnings from the umpiring crew. Wantz nevertheless hit Winker with the first pitch of the following inning. The Seattle left fielder initially seemed as if he’d simply take first base, but he wound up making his way towards the Angels’ dugout. That kicked off a few minutes of fighting that eventually resulted in the ejections of Wantz, Winker, Crawford, Rodríguez, Nevin, Tepera, Iglesias and Seattle manager Scott Servais.
Wantz’s suspension is for “intentionally throwing at Winker while warnings were in place,” according to MLB. Nevin has been suspended for Wantz’s pitches, while everyone else involved was banned for their roles in the melee itself.
Players are afforded an appellate right for on-field discipline. MLB announced that Wantz has already foregone his appeal and will begin serving his suspension today. The league didn’t indicate that any other players had done that, so they’ll remain on the roster while their suspensions are being heard. Rendon is on the injured list after undergoing season-ending wrist surgery two weeks ago. His suspension won’t take effect until he’s back on the active roster — meaning he’ll presumably miss the first five games of the 2023 season.
Coaches do not have the right to appeal their suspensions. Nevin, Chiti and del Campo will begin serving their bans tonight; Montgomery and Haselman will be out once Chiti returns five games from now.
Notably, players suspended for on-field rules violations cannot be replaced on the active roster. Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times tweets that the Mariners will be permitted to stagger any bans for their suspended players so as not to have the position player group decimated at the same time — it’s unclear if a similar setup will be in place for the Halos’ bullpen — but the teams will both be playing short-handed for a while once the appeals process is sorted out. While the Angels were dealt significantly more suspensions in terms of quantity, Seattle will feel the bigger hit in on-field production (assuming the suspensions aren’t overturned on appeal) with the subtraction of a trio of regulars from the lineup.
Ten games for Nevin?? Was he throwing haymakers or something? How does he get more than Winker?
10 games for a 1st time interm manager is a long time.
Should’ve been more tbh
IMHO it should have been 30 games for nevin.
Winkler should’ve got more for throwing up the middle finger out the angel fans
Angels deserved some of these but the Mariners got off easy.
Theoretically, what is to stop the Angels from, at the end of the year, activating Rendon off the IL to serve his 5 games?
Rosters only expand to 28 in September, might be too important to burn a roster spot on.
Bro, neither one of those teams are competing for anything except a higher draft pick.
likely true, all the more reason to activate him and play a man down for the final few games.
Manfred would see it for what it is, meaning an attempt to negate punishment. The Angels front office would have zero interest in creating an issue with the Commissioner’s office in an attempt to get special treatment for Rendon. Take your medicine and move on.
How is Anthony rendon participating in a brawl when hes out of the season with an injury ? If he is well enough to fight push pinch I think he would be well enough to swing a bat. Something seems off..
He was throwing punches with one hand other in a cast.
Watch the video. He was barking at Winker after Winker got hit by Wantz and hit him in the face a little
Rendon is one of the most hateable guys in the game. A real “not a good dude” off the field, no matter what the angels homer brigade thinks.
Can you expand what makes him hateable and not a good dude
A’sfaninUK-You’re full of crap. What is your source for that?
Us Dodgers fans hate him because he took a dig at us for no reason, there was no bad blood between the two current teams and Bellinger and trout were sharing covers of magazines and video games the year before. Hard to like him after that, even more hard after seeing his role in this
yogineely
Why do dodger fans boo Mike Trout when he comes up to the plate at dodger Stadium what has Mike trout done to dodger fans Can you answer my question?
I certainly do not and haven’t witnessed that! But also, I’m not going to try and stick up for our fans either or call you a liar. I love trout, I love ohtani, think you can’t possibly call yourself a fan of the game with out liking them. Good hard players with great attitudes
He didn’t hit him in the face. He put his hand on his face.
He had a cast on his hand my guy.
I thought Rendon would get 10 games. MLB doesn’t like ineligible players causing trouble from the bench. It’s too easy for inactive players and personnel to start trouble because they’re not playing and them getting ejected doesn’t hurt the team. I read elsewhere that he’s not allowed on the bench for the next week and his suspension starts when he gets off the IL. Rendon should have been banned the bench for the rest of this season so long as he’s injured, at least in games against the Mariners anyway…
He reacted to an individual that was irrate coming at him. He backed him off as he could.
The info re the suspensions to Rendon is correct. He can’t be in the dugout for the next 5 games, plus he gets another 5 game-ban to serve when he comes off the injured list. That’s per Mark Feisand of MLB Network.
I think the interpreter should probably be out of a job if he got involved… unless he was just interpreting a players view to the ump… which i find unlikely
Why should the lowest-paid guy lose his job over this nonsense while veterans who are making millions and had roles in starting it keep theirs?
MLB shouldn’t allow teams to stagger the suspensions. They shouldn’t get off that easy for these shenanigans.
David Fletcher named Interim-Interim Manager for the next 10 games…
How is Julio suspended? They didn’t even say what he did. M’s get 3 everyday players suspended and the Iglesias gets as many as julio who did nothing? Iglesias threw that big ass thing if seeds on the field and tried to incite more brawling
It was not appropriate but it if I’m honest I have to say it was funny as hell.
Oh yeah that slo-Mo video they have of him throwing the seeds is pure gold
Iglesias probably would have only gotten only one game if he hadn’t participated in Olympic level snack tossing. I think he was ejected by mistaken identity yesterday…
Julio did nothing? Watch the video bud lol.
Seen many versions. Julio didn’t throw any punches. Don’t know why he got suspended. He was holding some guts back, like a couple dozen other guys.
Would love to know what you think you see Julio doing in the video. He’s not on video doing anything that would merit a suspension. And nobody can get a straight answer out of the league as to what they even think he did.
I’d appeal
What video? What did he do?
He didn’t throw any punches, bud. He was holding guys back, bud. Sounds like you gotta watch the video, bud.
Interpreter Manny del Campo: Two games
Get rid of him
What a bunch of bull…. Winker gets 7 games, but Wantz, the guy who started the whole thing, only gets 3. And as a relief pitcher it’s really only a 1 or 2 game suspension, because he wouldn’t be pitching 3 days in a row anyway.
Winker.. the guy who rushed a bench with Rendon and Syndergarrd… did nothing? Ok lol. Hit him in the butt, either go to first or go to the pitcher lol.
Winker should’ve received 30. His actions towards the fans alone deserve heavy fines/suspension, but he attempted to re-instigate the fight numerous times after it was over. This was after he fought off an umpire to charge LAA’s dugout to fight in the first place.
Winker is a tool, based off of his actions during this. A plain punk. Sorry, but it’s the truth.
Hi Clipper! Never apologize for speaking the truth!
A perfect description of Winker.
Winker started it and then flipped off the fans. His should’ve been higher.
I hope someone got a good picture of Winker’s double bird.
The interpreter threw up gang signs and started the whole thing. All his fault.
Brings up a good question: Does the interpreter go out with a player whose engaging in the tumultuous behavior to? Perhaps stand behind him or immediately adjacent to the fight; Ya know, so he can keep interpreting all the stuff said before, during, and after the physical altercations?
Winkler should’ve gotten longer just because of his action towards the fans
Winker flips off the fans behind the dugout several times after breaking a hold by an umpire, and then rushes to the Angel dugout.
He gets no punishment for that!?!?
Winker got a 7 game suspension after getting intentionally hit by the pitch. Only Nevin, you know the guy who started this brawl, got suspended more. The pitcher only got a 3 game suspension,
So yeah, Winker got punished plenty while Rendon got off way too easy.
Rendon’s suspension will cost him over a million dollars in lost salary; Winkers will cost about $250K
Sadler-a million dollars for a 5 game suspension? you’re nuts
I believe that salaries cover 180 days and 162 games. Rendon is making north of $36 million a year or $200,000 plus a day. 5 days/games till $200k equals a million. Sadler is correct.
That said, the effect of losing one million on Rendon’s lifestyle given his contract is almost nil.
Punish Winker by trading him to the Angels. 😉
Umm he got more games than any other player.
Ridiculous. Far too many players with easily hurt feelings.
Upton gets hit in the head. Mariners throw at Trout in retaliation on Saturday. It should have ended there. Nope. Phil Nevin replaces Thor with an opener to deliberately throw at Mariners Julio Rodriguez and Winker. Phil Nevin should get at least 20 games for creating this entire spectacle and brawl with his actions! This may be harsh but MLB should set a precedent and ban Nevin for his deliberate actions in the “Best Interests of MLB”, so managers don’t ever set something like this up again.
They didn’t throw at trout. That’s such bull. For those of us that watched the game it was very obvious that the pitch got away. Much the same as when lornezen smoked Upton. The difference is the mariners aren’t a staff if d bags and the angels are.
Doesn’t matter if there was intent or not to those players involved in those instances on Saturday. Phil Nevin took it upon himself to be Judge and Jury, so to speak, by deliberately throwing an opener to hit the Mariners players! So blatantly intending to Hit players from a managers actions is 10 games according to MLB. Should be much more since he set everything in motion with his intentions being totally obvious!
There were 2 pitches at Trout. One up and in, a second even more up and in. As though the first one wasn’t good enough. This following a meeting on the mound.
The look on Seattle’s catcher’s face alone shows those were messages. No intent to bean him, but clearly intent to buzz the tower at least once.
Winkler flips the bird at the fans what if your mom and dad or your child were at the game flipping the bird at your parents or kids
Upton getting hit was 9 days before the brawl and the two teams played multiple games in between. It’s ridiculous to say Trout was thrown at in retaliation for something that had happened 9 days earlier. Swanson had no command that entire inning. Mariners never retaliated for Upton getting beaned because it was obviously an accident, much like the pitch to Trout. Phil Nevin is a ridiculous manchild to respond how he did.
in theory if the halos are out of the playoff race, could they not just activate Rendon with 5 games left this season and have him serve his suspension.
Or activate briefly in mid-September. 4 game series with Seattle.
Has an interpreter ever been suspended before? Is this baseball history?
I can visualize a guy standing on the field in the middle of a skirmish interpreting real-time English-Spanish expletives exchanges.
Lol an interpreter got suspended.
Angels should kick Nevin to the curb. He’s an interm. Hire a real manager.
Guys a head case
No keep Phil Nevin he’s got a pair of balls you gotta protect your superstar Winkler is a real head case flipping the bird at the fans what a loser
Look these Seattle fan u guy suck so shut your not going anywhere
I think you forgot some words.
Angels you guys suck and your bush league so you shut up.
Sounds pretty immature when you read it from someone else. And I can write the whole sentence.
Dude is the platonic ideal of an Angels fan.
Crawford was wrestling with some 70 yr old and he was one of the first to throw punches. Thought he’d get a bit more than 5.
I did too and I’m a M’s fan. He threw the clearest televised punches for sure
The worst punishment for the Angels would be allowing Nevin to continue as manager with no suspension.
Seems very unfair to suspend one manager for 10 games yet the other manager gets no suspension. I thought the coaches automatically got at least 1 game when the benches clear no matter what.
Scott service should’ve got suspended also makes no sense why all these angels get suspended Players coaches interpreters
Can we for a second talk about the umps.
Both teams were warned in the first inning.
Then the first pitch in the second inning Winkler. Why was there not an immediate ejection for that? Instead, everyone is looking around and the mariners are getting worked up calling for him to be ejected which worked up the angels and started this.
I thought after a warning, an ejection would have been immediate
I heard yesterday that their was a rule change not to long ago saying umpires have to get together before ejecting someone, even with warnings in place.
Correct. CloseCallSports had a good analysis of this on YouTube.
Ironic, that fans on here complain about umps, want their discretion removed and then complain when the umps don’t take action.
I said something about the umps they were totally incompetent. They should have ejected the first pitcher who couldn’t even hit Julio. If they did that it was over. Should have been over anyway missed your chance.
Yep. And they also should’ve gotten Winker off the field.
He restarted the skirmish when it moved by third base, flipped off and cussed out fans, then came out of the dugout pointing and screaming sone more.
He was the spark plug and needed to be removed.
Yeah that’s a great point. Winker should’ve been removed immediately. Allowing him to continue to flare up and attempt to re-engage Angels every single chance he got was a failure of Scott Servais, but more notably the umpires.
On that note. Shouldn’t the closer for the Angel’s got the same treatment? It was over but still throwing things on the field and screaming at the Mariners dugout. Or we were only focused on Winker?
The umpires have been extra awful this season.
Well, Iglesias threw things in the field twice, as I recall. But that’s not even remotely close to what Winker did. To say they are similar actions is grossly misrepresenting the facts. If you think Iglesias throwing bubblegum & sunflower seeds on the field because he was ejected gives Winker the right to start *another* physical altercation then we will just have to disagree, respectfully. But, that said, yes, someone should be at least attempting to deal with him from the Angels’ side, I agree.
Goastros: I agree 110%. They have been too involved and made poor decisions (or not involved when they need to be and made terrible non-decisions).
Has a manager ever done something so obvious? We know about headhunting and retaliation for a previous game. But for you to “start” a relief pitcher who has never started a game before in his career, throw at the first guy, throw at a second, it’s so incredibly obvious… and stupid.
Scott Service will serve as interim manager.
It’s a shame MLB can’t suspend Velazquez, Wade, Mayfield, Rengifo, Duffy for poor play as well.
They got off easy! Lol
100% agreed!!
If they planned for Wantz to pitch, couldnt they have at least picked those guys to be involved in the scuffle
Nevin made it too obvious.
That said if the umpires do absolutely nothing when a team holds a meeting on the mound before sending 2 at Trout’s head things like this happen.
Let’s not pretend the M’s were any less obvious the night before.
Mad love for our interpreter. That’s a dedicated employee right there.
And probably the only one of the Angels suspended that will actually be missed
It feels like MLB just needs to bring Jomboy in house because they can’t break down footage at all. I was looking to see what Tepera got because he came in swinging out of nowhere and set off Crawford, but 2 games to Crawford’s 5 is terrible. But nothing is as bad as 7 games for Winker, who took a baseball and a Rendon palm to the face before doing anything.
I feel like he does work for them. Mlb used to not like people posting videos and he seemed to be the only one allowed.
I get suspensions for egregious violations; but, MLB has simply taken the suspensions/HBP ejections too far. It’s silly now.
You’d encourage headhunting and that might trigger a real brawl that would require the police to break up. Such would give baseball image problems that can’t be easily explained away.
I never said any of that. At all. There’s an entire spectrum that exists from your extreme example to what I wrote.
A pitcher was ejected for throwing at a batter after both dugouts were warned. That directly led to a bench-clearing brawl. His skipper got a 10-game unplanned vacation as a result. And you’re suggesting nobody should be suspended?
The National Hockey League didn’t crack down on bench-clearing brawls until players were paraded on perp walks. That was back in the 1970s.
No, I wasn’t suggesting that at all. I specifically wrote there should be suspensions for “egregious violations.” I was speaking to the overreaction during the season (and last) as a whole which tends to exacerbate situations like this (which it did), because the Ms wanted the Angel’s pitcher tossed as soon as he hit Winker. None of that justified Winker running to the Angels dugout, after fighting off an umpire, so he could fight the Angels’ players. I wouldn’t care if MLB suspended him for the whole season because that’s egregious, by definition.
So, if you read any of my other comments in this thread you’ll read that the suspensions in this case were too light, imo. Winker should be suspended for more games, so should Crawford and others.
The punishments in this case were too light, which makes the other terrible suspension decisions this season even worse.
@Yankee Clipper: I don’t have a problem with saying that Winker deserved a longer suspension. But if we are going to play that game, what about the various Angels personnel involved?
1) Nevin very clearly and very intentionally switched pitchers at the last moment with the express intent to hit Seattle hitters.
2) Go back and watch the video closely. Winker stayed at home for a few moments to see if the umps were going to toss Wantz and Nevin. He then took a few steps towards 1B and the Angels dugout started jawing and chirping at him. He then was ONLY talking to the Angels dugout until Anthony Rendon touched his face. I dunno what you want to call it, a touch, a light slap, but Anthony Rendon instigated the whole physical aspect of this brawl. If you don’t believe me, go watch the video again. In fact, I would suggest Jomboy’s video of the brawl, he has an excellent, unbiased opinion of the whole way (famously a Yankees fan).
3) While Winker was engaged with other players, Ryan Tepera took at least a couple dirty body shots to Winker’s back, which is the only reason JP Crawford got involved.
So I don’t have a problem with saying that Winker deserves a longer suspension. But if you are going to argue that, you HAVE to admit that the penalties assigned to the Angels were laughably light.
Endersgame: Yeah there are plenty of heavy suspensions warranted here, I agree. The Angles have their share of problems as well, but I was addressing the “starting it” issue that’s dominating the threads.
Rendon was completely in the wrong & shouldn’t have been in the field of play, let alone the first guy out of the dugout. That’s on top of being incredibly unwise because he’s already injured… I wasn’t sure which Angels’ player was the one throwing haymakers, but that must’ve been Tepera. So, in effect, some players here on both sides warrant heavy punishments.
I do believe Winker was the worst violator because of his initial actions and persistence after the melee was over, coupled with his despicable actions towards the fans (that’s a pet peeve of mine).
I will also heed your advice and watch the Jomboy review of the matter too. Thanks for that info.
Why the F did julio get suspended at all? I couldn’t see the part where he was throwing hands
With the interpreter suspended, there could really be a lack of communication for the next two games.
The interim interpreter is currently out listening to Rosetta Stone.
duolingo
It’s a suspended sentence. Hold that thought. Back in 2 days.
Angels were a disgrace
Hate to state the obvious, but Trout is getting one in the ear next time these teams meet….and his own (interim)manager will be the reason why…you heard it here 1st folks!!! 🙂
Angels don’t play Seattle again until August — if the MLB home office has any brains, it’ll tell the umpires to warn both sides prior to the first game. Anyone throwing at a batter, yerouttahere!
Winker deserves a longer suspension for making things worse.
I know, Altuve should be gone for 50 games, at least, I agree.
Oh, you said Winker, sorry, total misread 😉
Funny guy!
Eh, I try. Usually fail miserably, but I get a C for effort.
Baseball players must be among the lamest brawlers and weakest punchers on this planet. A bunch of HGH-inflated juice monkeys duking it out in front of caterwauling, boozed-up, junk-food-chomping plebs and not ONE halfway serious injury…? Merely pushing, shoving and yelling like angry toddlers in a sandbox? Laughable. Wake me up when there are ambulances on the field with emergency doctors performing tracheotomies at home plate.
The fact that Rendon felt confident enough to participate in that petting zoo hubbub with a freshly surgically repaired wrist goes to show that there’s not much to worry about in these staged male-on-male groping encounters.
No, it means he wasn’t thinking during his testosterone-fueled anger.
Rendon should be “suspended” for the rest of the season as the Angels shouldn’t be paying him to break his other hand.
I wonder if Arte will consider another managerial change during the season as things are pretty much the same with Nevin as they were with Maddon. It wouldn’t be the first time a team had three Managers in a season, the Orioles had Dave Trembley, Juan Samuel, and Buck Showalter during the 2010 season.
I’m all for suspending a guy for throwing at a dude, but this is outlandish. How does Wantz get 3 if we believe there is intent? Who cares about the other acters in the brawl – It’s good TV and probably the most fun a non-baseball fan will have watching baseball. More brawls!
perfectly said! though for the first time i ever seen.
As usual, Seattle fans prove to be unknowledgeable windbags. Trout terrorizes then for five consecutive nights. They throw at Trout, miss him, then walk him. Then they do it again a second time, while Scott Servais puts his hands out and stares down Trout, challenging him.
Not only did the Mariners head hunt Trout twice, they antogonized him from the dugout. Then they act all shocked and shaken when Winker gets one on the butt, the way you’re supposed to do it.
This was 100% started by the Mariners.
So the Mariners just have to ignore the headshot to Upton? Seems like they were pretty okay with the “slipped” explanation then but now that the shoes on the other foot the angles throw a temper tantrum? Seems like the Angles are clearly in the wrong. Nevin stayed around to yell at Swanson after close calls. Should be done there but no… Nevin then starts the next game with a hitman on the bump and Julio in his sights. HE MISSES JULIO! You had your chance and you blew it, then you hit Winker? Are you kidding me? Angles look like absolute clowns.
Angels players and fans love Upton. He means a lot to the players in the clubhouse, they’d never throw at him. Seattle has done a crap job of rubbing down the baseballs before the games, multiple pitchers have complained. As soon as Winker charged they’re dugout, Upton got buried in the piles and Trout rushed in to pull him out. So your point there carries no weight whatsoever.
Fact is, Seattle threw at Trout twice and antagonized him from the dugout. Winker got what was coming to him. Seattle started it and then tried to play the victim when retribution came. Pansies.
Let’s break it down this way. Moore HBP 6/16/22 , Rengifo HBP, Upton HBP 6/17/22 , Moore HBP 6/18/22 , Crawford HBP, Moore HBP 6/28/22. All this before Winkers is HBP to start the brawl. Where’s Mike Trout you may ask? Well he’s not here because he wasn’t hit. Thats 5 hit Mariners and 1 hit Angel in the games leading up to the brawl. Why were the angles so mad when they are clearly the ones who cant control the ball?
@Angelicvisitstions the meeting in the mound wasn’t a headhunting mission, Swanson couldn’t locate his fastball up, that where you need to pitch Trout. Teams have a game plan for how they pitch to dudes like Trout, it was so do we stick to the game plan or try something else. Coaches coach, pitching coach tells him his release is all off, he needs to slow it down, but he’s amp up and can’t do. After the meeting the first one is too high, second is way to far in and over Trout’s head. Not good. So they abandon the plan and walk him because first is now open and you have a force out at 3rd and 2nd. Where in the coaches manual does it say hit Trout in the head and have Ohtani possibly come up and hit a walk off 3 run hr?? Please explain the logic there? M’s didn’t retaliate for Upton b/c they knew there was no intent to hit him in the head. M’s haven’t retaliated against the Astro’s who’ve hit 3 of our players, one twice and one who now is continuing to suffer concussion after effects from being hit in the head. So please tell me why in the f would you attempt hit Trout in the head with a 2 run lead, 2 outs, a runner on base, and Ohtani on deck.. plain and simply you don’t. Learn the game you watch or stop being a fan.
This was 100% started and escalated by the Angels.
Go back and watch the full inning that Swanson was pitching. He NEVER had control the entire inning. That lack of control is the exact reason the Mariners did not simply intentionally walk Trout when he first came to the plate, there was already a walked batter on first. Could you make a case the Mariners should have intentionally walked Trout anyway? Probably.
If Erik Swanson was intentionally head hunting Trout, then Lorenzen was intentionally head hunting Upton. You cannot have it both ways.
Why would anyone get suspended longer than the Sea rat who blew off fans?
Should the Angels suspend or void the contract of Anthony Rendon ?
His season has ended; he has a surgically repaired wrist.
Actions detrimental to the team. He inflames a bad situation on the field from the bench.
Actions detrimental to his health. He is involved in a physical altercation.
Let the Angels act in a knee-jerk manner as you suggest, the MLBPA will walk out on strike and shut down the major leagues. This isn’t Amazon.com with its anti-union tactics.
Winter was classless and should get suspended for his actions no doubt about that.
The real winner is Phil Nevin he has always been a tool he’s a clown that shouldn’t even be in baseball. He’s always been an unchecked bully and as long he is in charge of any team there is no question that he will do the same thing again. He is the real instigator and just an absolutely low class human always has been always will be. He really shouldn’t be in baseball but if he is he shouldn’t be in charge of any team. He should be fired immediately he is not good for baseball. He is a classless clown that thinks he is some kind of old school enforcer when I’m fact he is just an old school fool. Never liked that idiot and while I would never wish any I’ll will on anyone he is someone that needs to be put in his place. What a joke of a human being he is.
you drunk?
I’m not sure a Nevin suspension actually hurts the Angels.
Rendon? How do you suspend a guy that’s never healthy enough to play?
As for Nevin, maybe that’s what these prinadona ball players need, a Billy Martin, Hank Bauer type.
Billy Martin? Fired from the Detroit Tigers for ordering his pitchers to throw at ballplayers?
The Angels got off easy. Wantz should be suspended for at least an equal amount as Winker. He intentionally threw behind Rodriguez AND hit Winker. He’s have hit Rodriguez if his command wasn’t terrible.
Also, sure. Suspend Rendon for 5 games. But be sure those 5 games occur after he comes off the IL.
Shout out to the interpreter getting himself a stiff 2 game suspension
Does anyone ever recall an interpreter getting a suspension before?.. crazy
This was all pre-meditated. Thor got moved to Monday and screwed up my 2 start week in my league. Damn you Nevin.
Good thing no one was called Jackie.MLB would’ve really been pissed
Jackie (Jackie), hey what’you doing now
It seems like yesterday
When we were working out
Jackie (Jackie, oh) you set
The world on fire
Everybody was kung fu fighting…
How does Wantz only get three games and Winker 7 games? Wantz instigated it. Winker didn’t actually do anything until Nevin continued to jaw at him. Wantz misses almost nothing. He will file a protest, the Angels will use him on B2B days, and he misses two rest days. He’ll only miss one real game.
Did you not read the story? Wantz decided not to appeal his suspension and began serving it last night.
Dom Chiti? What a Chiti deal man….
Nevin should have gotten 30 games. He is almost solely responsible for the fight. And he admitted so to the ump, he started an opener solely to bean mariners hitters. That’s an unprecedented move and the league should have taken a strong stand against it. The mariners are going to miss 7 games from Winker, that’s far worse than missing 10 games from your idiot manager.
I’m sorry, but as an objective, neutral observer, the manager making that decision has no bearing on Winker’s egregious, flagrant actions on the field.
Winker’s punishment is far too light and MLB should make an example of him. Winker was responsible for the fight. Nobody forced him to do what he did – that was a conscious decision, followed by many other poor ones. He was simply out of control.
Your “Blame the Victim” attitude is the mindset of a keyboard warrior. Major League Baseball is not going to take the word of a keyboard warrior over professional umpires who are employed and paid by the league office.
Chunky, I’m not sure if that’s in response to my post, but if so, can you elaborate on “Blame the Victim” & keyboard warrior analogies, please? If it’s not, that’s fine, but it’s difficult to tell who is responding to which comment sometimes. I do hope you’re not calling Winker a victim though. That’s preposterous.
Also, it seems you equate me expressing my opinion about punishments with me saying MLB should read this and are expected to act in what I say, which is silly. You seem quite hyperbolic. You chastised my comment above when you took the “No suspensions “ stance way out of context and now are overreacting to the opposing stance?
Again, that’s IF you’re responding to me….
*Chucky, my apologies. “Chunky” was an autocorrect for whatever’s reason.
Does this happen if the Ms don’t throw at Trout’s head? Of course not.
Service and Winker should have gotten more time than Nevin.
You don’t throw at a player’s head simply because you can’t get him out. You do throw at players AFTER you throw at a player’s head.
Just glad the letting go of Upton and Maddon has produced so much value to the Angels thus far this season.
Things are really falling into place.
Robot umpires would not only get all the calls right but they would also tase the pitcher who throws at a batter and tase the batter who doesn’t just go to first base. And tase anyone trash talking from the dugout. Bzzzzzzzzzzt!!!
Problem solved.
Hey, good luck tomorrow, man.
Thanks!
Dalek robo umps would have made this SO much more interesting. Poison darts dropping questionable bearded jocks all over batting circles.
Haha! Darts in the butt for everyone! The slurred interviews after the game would be magic.
And here we thought auto-umps would take character from the game. They’d BE characters. If we can’t program them to atleast talk trash…it’s a complete loss.
“it’s a complete loss.“
Yep.
Hopefully this keeps happening and maybe Rangers and Astros can go at it a bit too and then the A’s might have a shot.
Seattle gonna make Carlos Santana jump someone to join their gang? Also anyone see that Archie Bradley fail? He fell hopping the fence in the beginning and now out to undisclosed injury
Well, anyone that threw a punch should be in jail. That’s assault. Fans go to jail and get banned for life for just running on the field and call it a safety issue. Same thing for intentionally pitching at a batters head. No excuse for violence. At very least, Winker made it up to that little girl that was crying in the stands. As for jrod, his charges should be dropped.
