Many both within and outside the baseball industry were surprised when Freddie Freeman signed with the Dodgers last offseason. The general expectation had been that he’d re-sign with the Braves, continuing his career-long stint in the organization. Yet that was foreclosed when Atlanta acquired Matt Olson from the A’s shortly after the lockout, and Freeman landed in L.A. a few days later.
The course of events over the final few days of negotiations has been a subject of controversy, one that resurfaced over the weekend when a visibly emotional Freeman made his return to Atlanta. The 2020 NL MVP received his World Series ring and caught up with many former teammates and coaches, and he understandably struggled to put into words how much his time in the Braves organization had meant to himself and his family.
On Tuesday, Buster Olney of ESPN reported that Freeman had dismissed his longtime agency, Excel Sports Management, out of frustration with how his free agent process played out. Freeman himself characterized the matter differently, conceding his representation was a “fluid situation” but leaving open the possibility of mending fences with Excel and expressing a desire to move forward with the Dodgers.
The controversy was reignited yesterday when Fox Sports Radio host Doug Gottlieb tweeted that Excel’s lead negotiator Casey Close never informed Freeman about a final offer from the Braves. Gottlieb alleges Close “knew (Freeman) would have taken the Atlanta deal” but made the unilateral decision to withhold it from his client, ostensibly because he felt he could top the offer elsewhere. Close forcefully denied that notion last night, releasing a statement (on Twitter) that reads “Doug Gottlieb tweeted a wholly inaccurate characterization of our negotiations with the Atlanta Braves on behalf of Freddie Freeman. We are immediately evaluating all legal options to address the reckless publication of inaccurate information.”
This afternoon, Close put out another statement taking aim at the Braves themselves. In a release first tweeted by Jeff Passan of ESPN, Close alleged “the Braves have fostered a narrative about the negotiations which, stated plainly, is false. Part of that false narrative is the suggestion that I did not communicate a contract offer to the Freemans. To be clear, we communicated every offer that was made, as well as every communication Excel had with the Braves organization throughout the entire process.”
Close didn’t take aim at anyone specific in his statement. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Freeman acknowledged in late March that he had a three-hour conversation with Atlanta president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos “to hear his side of things” after initially implying that Anthopoulos and his staff hadn’t been especially forthcoming during the free agent process (link via Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution). Freeman made more general reference to communications with Braves personnel this week, telling reporters (including Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times) he’d “learned a lot” about his free agency “because I talked to the other side.”
Throughout the winter, the holdup between the Braves and Freeman seemed to be on the issue of a sixth guaranteed year. Atlanta was reluctant to go beyond five years for the 32-year-old. Justin Toscano of the Journal-Constitution hears from a source who suggests Freeman’s camp had offered the Braves a choice between two offers: $165MM over five years or $175MM over six years. Atlanta declined to meet those numbers and, according to Toscano, the sides mutually agreed to move on. (Olney wrote this week that the Braves had nudged their final offer to around five years and $140MM). The Braves acquired Olson two days later; Freeman wound up signing a six-year, $162MM offer with the Dodgers, although deferrals reduced the contract’s net present value to around $149MM.
Whatever caused talks between the Braves and Freeman to hit a stumbling block, the fallout has involved an ugly spat between his former team and one of the game’s most influential agents. Excel Sports Management represents dozens of players, including stars like Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Paul Goldschmidt, Kyle Tucker and high-profile impending free agents Andrew Benintendi and Dansby Swanson. Swanson has already stated the Freeman saga wouldn’t have any effect on his choice of representation, as he has no plans to leave Excel before his first trip to the open market.
There’s obviously some level of tension between the agency and the Atlanta organization, but it’s worth noting neither Close nor anyone with the Braves has suggested there’ll be adverse effects on negotiations between the team and other Excel clients. It stands to reason the Braves will have some interest in re-signing Swanson, a Georgia native and six-year starting shortstop who’s amidst the best season of his career.
RamMac14
False narrative?? The guy gave the Braves two final offers and an hour to decide without even letting Freddie know. Both offers way above what even freeman expected. He made a mistake, why not own up to it. I’m pretty sure Freddie didn’t fire him for no reason.
getrealgone2
Freddie also made a mistake for being so clueless and not paying closer attention. If he really wanted to stay in Atlanta he would have been up his agent’s ass to get it done. I have zero sympathy for him or his ex agent.
Bochys Retirement Fund
I mean, if my agent is getting, what 6% of my contract? Which is roughly 9.9MM for the Dodgers contract, I would also like to feel I could trust my agent to handle this properly.
bucsfan0004
I’m sure Freeman looks at his paycheck and wonders where the money is. Then some accountant probably told him, ‘look, you play 70% of your games in California now, you should have taken the Atlanta offer that would have allowed you to play 50-60% of your games in Georgia/Florida’. Now its all this drama about his agent, the Braves, etc….
Its all about the money.
Kevin28786
Yeah, ol’ Freddie is paying a boatload of that Cali tax between LA, San Diego, and San Francisco. That’s roughly 100 super high tax games within the division. Atlanta would have roughly 30 such games in DC, NY, and Philly. Over the course of the contract, he’s earning less with LA than he would have with Atlanta, I’m sure.
RamMac14
Agreed
outinleftfield
Wrong. Freeman gave Close the amounts he would sign for. The player makes those decisions, not the agent. The article in the AJC about it says that they gave the Braves those numbers in November. The lockout started December 2nd and ended March 12th. The Braves completed the trade for Olson on the 14th. One day later they signed Olson to a long term extension. The A’s said they had been in discussions with the Braves about a possible trade before the lockout. This was a long time in the works and as soon as the lockout was over the Braves pulled the trigger.
SoCalBrave
The lockout ended on March 10th

Did you believe Atlanta, or any team, would sit back and do nothing. They had to do their due diligence just in case Freddie signed elsewhere. The Freeman camp played a game of chicken and lost. They assumes the Braves would cave. They didn’t.

He cant own up to it. If he does freeman might sue him.
The Baseball Fan
Interesting. Freeman was put in a very tough position, as Atlanta was where he came up, became a star and won a World Series, only to see that another first baseman would be acquired with high expectations. On one hand, he wanted to be the starting first baseman for a competitive team. On the other hand, he felt as if he would betray his fans by leaving Atlanta.
JoeBrady
On one hand, he wanted to be the starting first baseman for a competitive team.
==================================
That’s not really a factor, unless you consider either Atlanta or the LAD non-competitive.
He was going get really well and play for a contender, no matter which team he played for. He chose the LAD.
SupremeZeus
Yawn.
Dustyslambchops23
None of this matters anymore, he should focus on his new team, nothing is going to change what happened.
VonPurpleHayes
The media picking up and running with a story is a lot different than Freeman dwelling on it. He’s not paying attention to this nonsense.
Dustyslambchops23
He fired his long term agent directly following his time in Atlanta. If he didn’t want this to be a distraction he could have waited until the offseason.
It’s in the media because of him
VonPurpleHayes
I don’t think he cares what we’re distracted by. My point is, I highly doubt he’s distracted at all. He’s playing to win in LA and getting paid. I think that’s his focus.

Why should any baseball fan care about any of this? No matter how little the player says or what he says about this it gets spun into a silly narrative that mostly serves to satisfy the cynicism of the cynical. But most of all it’s totally meaningless to what happens on grass and dirt.

Why should any baseball fan care about any of this?

Because it is interesting? It’s like asking why anyone is interested in Cashman making a “final” offer to Judge. Or people interested in the dynamics between the RS and Devers/Bogaerts.
It’s a really interesting story when someone leaves a team that he apparently cared quite a bit about, but leaves for no discernible benefit.
BlueSkies_LA
You can easily see what this “interesting” story adds to the enjoyment of the game of baseball by reading the comments on this story. Overwhelmingly, a big subtraction. Just look at how many use it to speculate about events they really know nothing about, and to profess insights into what people who they don’t know are thinking, doing, or feeling. Interesting? Only if you get a kick out of watching people find yet another excuse for exercising their cynicism and prejudices. I mean, as if we don’t see enough of that already.

RunDMC
Well, if he tries the same hardball tactic of overreaching with “irreplaceable franchise cornerstone” for tens of millions more than market value, then sure. Those luscious locks have no effect on AA.
Very interesting that a seasoned agent like Close is coming out about a current team, especially one that is about to a FA for said team. You don’t want to reduce available bidders by bad blood, just like ATL FO has some need in making sure things are copacetic to not effect future negotiations. ATL FO has done a good job of not publicly airing out their dirty laundry, and those within the industry know the truth, just like how the Jeter/Close dumpster-fire extension negotiations happened years ago.
bravesnation nc
So Excel now comes out and says the negotiations or lack there of AFTER Freeman comes back to ATL not when the were out in LA to begin this as says it’s a false narrative? I’ve said it previous posts, they screwed the pooch and the Dodgers bailed the agency out. Freeman got blindsided but he should have been more engaged in the negotiations to stay in ATL. Chipper told this guy what not to do and it played out exactly the way he said it would. Now Freeman is just another dude on the Dodgers getting paid less than he would if he was still in ATL. He was overwhelmed because it’s different in the A. I was at the Divisional and WS games last year in ATL and he had a whole city and state begin him and the club. Legacy Lost and he KNOWS IT.
Dock_Elvis
If you’re Freddie Freeman. You direct your agent to get a deal done with Atlanta You don’t test the market that openly. Gotta represent your own interests with your own people sometimes.
outinleftfield
Freeman gave Close numbers he would not budge from and told him to convey that to the Braves. When the Braves felt they couldn’t match that number, they moved on to Olson. That is probably why the Braves decided in November to start negotiations with the A’s about Olson and pulled the trigger on a trade as soon as the lockout ended. They COMPLETED the trade on the 14th. That means the teams turned in the names, flew players across the country for medical evaluations, and then got an approval for the trade from MLB in two days. That is not something that happens if you have not been in deep and serious talks for a while.

Now that he’s in Los Angeles Frederick Freeman should hire Rich Paul to be his agent.

I don’t know what is true, but I do know that if Freeman was still with the Braves, they would be in first instead of trailing the overachieving Mets.
Braves Butt-Head
Would he have made Ozuna and Duvall play better and made Morton and Ian Anderson play better. Maybe he would have prevented Ozzie from breaking his foot.
TradeAcuna
No, but Freeman is better than Olson and is far better situational hitter than Olson.
Ozuna, Duvall, and Albies are all bad hitters. There is nothing saving them.
fred-3
Olson is a better hitter if the balls were juiced. Line drive approach hitters benefit with the new ball.
signenderinciarte
Better fielder also and has more speed
TradeAcuna
I still grimace at the claims that Olson was so much better defensively than Freeman. Olson’s defense does not impress me in the least. As silly as it may sound, Freeman still doesn’t get enough credit for the importance he brought to this squad when they found their footing in 2018 and beyond.
Braves Butt-Head
Olson has a 1.7 WAR and Freeman has a 2.5 WAR so basically the Braves would have maybe 1 or 2 more games closer. But they are still 3.5 games back and you said they would definately have the division lead and I just doubt that. But who knows.
TradeAcuna
I am unable to recall a game so far this season in which Olson contributed most significantly to the Braves’ victory. Not one! Clearly, the sample size is small, but from what I’ve seen so far (especially earlier in the season), I can’t recall any particular game.
The Braves would undoubtedly be in the lead at this point. Of course, I’m not claiming that the Olson is the only factor keeping the Braves from being in first place.
Braves Butt-Head
How about 2 days ago when he hit 2 solo HRs and one off Zack Wheeler.
TradeAcuna
In my head, I’m referring to him coming up with men on in a game when the team is losing or winning in a walk-off fashion – occasions like that.
In any case, I appreciate you bringing up the Philadelphia game. It is a valid one, and maybe a sign that Olson is finding his footing.
DonOsbourne
I’d give that about a 4 out of 10 as awkward walk backs go. 4 points for having the guts to try.

I’ve been following Casey Close for many years as he was Derek Jeter’s agent throughout his entire career. This is the first time he has been embroiled in any kind of controversy that I know of. I’m going to go with AA is not being truthful and Freeman drank his kool-aid.
fred-3
He’s had a number of high profile clients. Freeman sounds like way too high maintenance.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Just shut up and play. Your team has a good chance to win the WS. You’ve won a ring and mostly like be in the HOF when you retire. Many players would be happy to trade places with Freeman. His woe-is-me comments aren’t helpful at all.
SoCalBrave
The report of the 2 offers and 1 hour deadline has been out since Freeman signed with the Dodgers. The only “new” information is that Close didn’t tell Freeman about the Braves $140 Million counter, which was also widely reported. If that were true, Freeman would have fired his agent a long time ago.
Most likely AA told Freeman details about the logistics of the negotiations, not so much the contract terms offer, and Freddie didn’t like the aggressive way Excel tried to negotiate.
This is just speculation on my part, but what I know for sure is that players don’t realize how aggressive negotiations are, specially if they’re not involved.

Wilmer the Thrillmer
In 3 years, when Freeman is no longer a great player and Olson is the best first baseman in the MLB this will be a distant memory for Braves fans. In my opinion this one is 100% on Freeman. He held out for 6/175. For a soon to be 33 year old first baseman 30mil per year for 6 years is greedy especially when the Braves signed him to a very big 8 year contract in 2014 when he was young and relatively unproven.
The only decent player the Braves gave up for the 28 year old Olson was Langeliers. Cusick should be a prospect but has an era over 8 this year. Pache looks like a bust.
I thought for sure Freeman would have a better year than Olson this year but Olson is seriously giving him a run for the money and is on pace for 65 doubles and 25 home runs and I expect his home run total to be well into the 30’s by season’s end.
I know Braves fans love Freeman just like the Cards fans loved Pujols.
But Olson is such a better long term signing for the Braves.
LordD99
TBD.
WatchClark
I get the vibe the Braves didn’t care for him / drama. The Braves have many young stars, they don’t need a guy who doesn’t fit in. If the Braves wanted him, they would have got him. The got Matt Olson instead
LordD99
Freeman fit in as well as can be in Atlanta. It was purely a $$ decision made by the Braves who are owned by a corporation.
russ5tide
I’m sorry Close, but if you would have taken Freddie saying he wants to be a Brave for life to heart than you would have made 100% sure that he landed with the Braves well before the Braves were forced to pivot. Let this be a learning lesson for your future clients. How about you involve your client directly in the negotiations so that they can get a feel for how they work and if they are about to have to change teams for the 1st time in 13 seasons because you messed around for more pocket change.
I have zero sympathy for any Agent and there is a reason Freddie fired him. There were many many months from the time free agency opened to the lockout happened where a deal could have easily been done if he considered Freddie to be a priority client to him he should have made sure of that!
C Yards Jeff
The Braves were not forced to “pivot”. There was no pivoting here. For their reasons, Olson was the first choice here and they got him and at the terms they were looking for. If anything, any rhetoric put out there by the Braves was to entice Matt to sign, not Freddy. Freddy was option 2. I’m thinking the Braves will regret this. I’m still grateful to the Reds for trading an “old 30” Frank Robinson to my Orioles!
TrillionaireTeamOperator
Looking back you wonder why he didn’t push for an extension earlier or why they didn’t try to extend him earlier or something. If there was so much love there, why wait until free agency and get aggressive on both sides? Yes his original extension with the Braves was very generous but it also absolutely kept his salary depressed well below market value and Freddie obviously knew that. But he was asking for market value at 33 years old and asking for the kind of years you get at 28 going on 29.
That 8 year/$135M extension should have been 14 years/$320M and broken down like 3 separate contracts for 8 years/$160M, 3 years/$100M, 3 years/$60M.
I kinda wonder if he didn’t consider his market value in his side if things: like he thought he’d get market value from them later by giving them a steeper discount earlier… whoops.
outinleftfield
Gottlieb is a failed basketball player and a failing radio host that obviously flat out lied about this to get people talking about him. He succeeded at that, but it may cost him big in court and will probably cost him his show on Fox Sports radio very soon. An agent holds a fiduciary duty to a client so they cannot withhold offers legally. It is also against the MLBPA rules of conduct for MLB agents and it would cost his agency the right to represent any baseball players, You can see a small part of the list of those players in the article above. Close is one of the best agents in baseball so he certainly would not do something that stupid. Gottlieb’s statement doesn’t pass the smell or logic tests.
C Yards Jeff
Braves were after Olson all along. 4.5 yrs younger than Freddy. In the gamesmanship that goes on between ownership and player rep when talking future employment, the Braves won this one.

Close has to say this cause excel / he’s about to lose a lot of clients. Swanson for example needs to drop him asap, as he’s currently playing well enough to earn him quite a healthy contract and he can’t risk close screwing this up. Fred McGriff HR
@Kevin28786 That’s a complete fallacy that “Any major leaguer can play first base.”. However, anyone might be able to stand at 1st base and make some regulation plays, but how many of those players are going to turn a 3-6-3 double play, or when the pressure is on to make an out at home throw it away, or when there’s pressure to make a good pick they’ll boot it rather than making the play. No, any major leaguer cannot play 1st base to the desired level, it’s a far more important position than you’re making out it is.

That three day sappy lovefest in Atl last week tells you all you need to know where Freddie wanted to be…and what actually happened. Anyone with half a brain could see the utter disappointment he had with how things turned out…including The Dodgers. What in hell we’re they thinking as they saw Freddie’s heart pour out time and time again during that homestead? Anyone who had an emotional breakdown like Freeman surely knows where he wants to be. And it ain’t with LA.
Fred McGriff HR
What I am tired of in all of this is the ‘he said this, no he didn’t do that’, etc.
If Freddie Freeman wanted to remain a Brave, the first thing he should have done at the very start of all of this is say to AA that before AA does anything make sure that he calls FF. If FF didn’t do that then that’s on FF. If FF wanted to be a Brave he shouldn’t have messed around, if he really loved the club so much he could have signed for 5/140, but he didn’t, so as far as I am concerned it’s on Mr Freeman and no one else. he should have made it his business to know what was going on, not rely on other people to do it for him…

The narrative is Freeman isn’t happy where he is and after 3 months of buyers remorse and a trip “home” fired his representatives out of resentment for not being where he actually wants to be, its a lateral move that literally can change nothing after the fact. Freeman in reality is just as much to blame for detaching himself from the situation and just letting it play out instead of being involved in HIS contract negotiations.
Close is running damage control because its a bad look anytime a player fires his agent, especially when it’s being told through the media that offers were being withheld. You work for the client, the client tells you what they want and you ignore it to further your own interests eventually either Excel starts losing clients or they get rid of the guy at the center of the problem

There isn’t a more aggressive agent in baseball than Scott Boras. Stephen Strasburg told him he wanted to stay in DC and make it happen. Sounds like Freddie guessed wrong trying to play both sides.

As I Have mentioned before All can be fixed with a three Team trade Washington trades JOSH BELL & A Reliever to Los Angles . The Dodgers in turn send FREEMAN back to Atlanta where OLSON & He take turns playing first & DH , Marcel OSUNA is shipped to LA with The DODGERS assuming his contract. The Braves send Three pieces to WAHINGTON, Either Kyle Mueller or Bryce ELDER plus two blue-chip prospects from either Augusta or ROME . The Nationals still rebuilding get three players from ATLANTA and THE DODGERS send ALVEREZ and A High AA or TRIPLE AA Player to WASHINGTON as well as a High A prospect Pitcher.WASHINGTON gets six platers in the deal for JOSH BeLL and Reliever either FINNEGAN or RAINEY to LA THE BRAVES Assume FREDDIES contract and maybe get last year’s switch-hitting utility player back from THE NATS. This is a WIN-WIN DEAL for all three teams!

I’d be more interested to see how the Atlanta Braves handle this legally. Close coming out and making a statement about it is one thing with what Doug G wrote. However I haven’t seen a single piece of information being put out by the Braves having said ANYTHING. like nothing at all. Kinda amazed that Close is going to name the Braves as spreading a false narrative. Where? I see a defamation suit being served to Close on behalf of the Braves. Just because Freddie fired his agent? I don’t see the Braves spreading anything.
