The Cardinals placed outfielder Corey Dickerson on the 10-day injured list due to a left calf strain. Right-hander Jake Walsh was called up from Triple-A to take the open spot on the active roster, and in another move, Jake Woodford was also optioned back to Triple-A after serving as the 27th man for yesterday’s doubleheader.
Dickerson left the first game of that doubleheader in the second inning, so it isn’t surprising that he’ll now head to the IL. The injury adds to what has been a rough season for Dickerson, as he has hit only .194/.245/.286 over 106 plate appearances since signing a one-year, $5MM free agent in March. In a cruel twist of fate, Dickerson’s injury comes just a day after his best performance in a St. Louis uniform, as Dickerson hit his first two home runs of the season in Friday’s 14-5 win over the Cubs.
While Dickerson’s absence leaves the Cardinals more shorthanded in the outfield, Tyler O’Neill and Dylan Carlson could be back from their own IL stints within a few days. Brendan Donovan has also emerged as a multi-position option, and Lars Nootbaar is on hand to more specifically fill Dickerson’s role as a left-handed complement within a largely right-handed lineup. Tommy Edman could also factor into the outfield picture when not playing shortstop, and Albert Pujols could get more DH at-bats against right-handed pitching while Dickerson is out.

I’m glad to be rid of Dickerson for at least 10 days, but Pujols shouldn’t hit against right-handers. Those days are over.
Putmeincoach12
Exactly. Pujols is terrible against righties hitting around .130
When O’Neil and Carlson return from their rehabs we need to use Yepez against lefties and Donovan against righties.
Lanidrac
Pujols is still the better option against lefties. Yepez and Donovan will likely split time against most of the righties.

I am afraid say this, but people who haven’t already noticed this, O’Neil and Carlson are made out of Glass. Always fighting off some type of injury.
Currently—- Donavan and Yepez are doing quite well. Those 2 need to earn their way back being everyday starters. Especially over Donavan!!!!

Well, I disagreed with you guys I know that Dickerson has struggled because he is not in the lineup consistently. If he was regularly playing his numbers / average of him would be better. I have been a fan of Dickerson since he started his career in Colorado. Hopefully, once he comes from the IL he continues hitting well because in his last two games he was making good contact. If the Cardinals decide to trade or release him a good place to play for him is Philadelphia were he put good numbers.
Lanidrac
Dickerson WAS regularly playing against righties for the first month or so, and he still sucked! That’s why he’s lost so much playing time in the first place!
spudchukar
Yeah, I have been a fan of him for a long time too, but both Donavan and Nootbar may get most of the playing time. But when Dickerson is healthy he is still a good option.
Putmeincoach12
Did you say Nootbaar will get a lot of playing time. That’s so wrong it is funny. He will be back in AAA as soon as O’Neil and Carlson are back.O’Neil is back today (Tuesday.)

How will the cards go on without him?

Time to quit trying to saved a couple million bucks and pay for a major league player .$5 for CD ? Really? Whoever thought that would work should be looking for work
Lanidrac
Dickerson has been a decent hitter before now. It was completely unexpected that he would be so terrible this year.
Lanidrac
Well, that’s an interesting way for Dickerson to avoid a DFA for a while longer.
bighiggy
I mean him and McFarland have to be the 2 getting the boot when oneill and carlson are back right? In a separate note, I was surprised to see Robertson claimed. With sosa struggling when do we finally get a Donovan, edman and gorman(3 way split for 2 positions)everyday infield, they are our best options. And with dejong finally heating up at memphis do we get a dejong recall or trade? Next couple of weeks should be interesting

Certain teams have already considered DeJong as a reclamation trade candidate.
Putmeincoach12
Tyler O’Neil has been recalled and is starting in tonight’s game. No mention of this on this site. Not very good reporting MLTR

I’m so sick of John Mozeliak. With all of the wasted millions of dollars on retread pitchers and players Mo acquired this off season, he could have spent it on one impact player for 2022.
Why Bill DeWitt Jr. has put up with Mozeliak’s waste of money on low hanging fruit is beyond me.
The quality of pitching Mozeliak acquires ——Get’s more disgusting each season

The Cardinals have actually been constructed pretty well but lack a few key depth pieces. I think the main difference in the past five years from the five or ten years before is that they used to have a keen eye for players that other teams passed over who came in and got right and became lightning in a bottle. I’m not sure if that was Luhnow’s eye and Dave Duncan’s ability to help pitchers find their niche or what but they have signed a bunch of free agent duds as role players. For the sake of the next 3.5 yrs I truly hope they find a way to get Matz on track!

Don’t worry about Dickerson right now. The Cardinals have a lot worse problems than him.
A good Start would be to Fire John Mozeliak. Fire Marmoil. Fire the Golden Child hitting coach.
Rehire Schildt. Pujols the Hitting Coach/DH, move Michael Girsch to head of baseball operations.

Speaking of our hitting coach, I’d love to see his reaction to how Carp is doing this year.
