The Braves have claimed infielder Joe Dunand off waivers from the Marlins, per announcements from both teams. He’s been optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. Catcher Manny Pina was transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL in order to open a spot on the roster for Dunand.
The nephew of three-time MVP and 14-time All-Star Alex Rodriguez, Dunand was the Marlins’ second-round pick back in 2017. He’s appeared in just three big league games, all this season, going 3-for-10 with a homer and a double. It’s been another story at the Triple-A level, however, as the 26-year-old has struggled to the tune of a .211/.296/.385 batting line through 84 games and 309 plate appearances.
Dunand ranked among the Marlins’ top 25 prospects over at Baseball America in 2018-19 but has seen his stock diminish since his days as a standout at North Carolina State. He’s spent the bulk of his minor league time at shortstop but has increasingly played third base in recent years. Scouting reports on Dunand have tabbed him as a potentially above-average defender at the hot corner with above-average power, but he’s been far too strikeout prone in the upper minors to tap into that potential.
Pina’s move to the 60-day injured list is a formality. The veteran backstop, who inked a two-year, $8MM contract with Atlanta over the winter, underwent season-ending wrist surgery on May 11 after an MRI revealed ligament and cartilage damage.
TradeAcuna
Maybe it will take 90+ losses for this team to start caring about winning
Appalachian_Outlaw
They’re not going to lose 90 games. They’re coming up on a stretch where they play the Pirates, Cubs, Nats and A’s. Atlanta will be fine.
Meanwhile the Mets have played the Nats 10x already, taking 8 of those games. We’ll see how they do when the schedule gets less cushy.
You Can Put It In The Books
Power Rankings Guru has the Mets with the 9th easiest strength of schedule played thus far. They have the 11th easiest remaining schedule.
TradeAcuna
Do you know what’s funny and sad? You had to exclude the D-Backs because they already lost 2 of 3. Most likely if you were to make this statement days earlier, you would have included the D-backs. The reality is this team is not beating anybody good or bad (other than the Marlins – even these games are close). There is zero indication this team will turn it around. Anderson is inconsistent, Morton is bad right now, and the fifth spot is terrible. The bullpen is not great and the offense is the biggest offender here. Two good hitters playing daily in Riley and Swanson. One guy who never stays healthy in Acuna. Everyone else is not good.
Mets schedule is easy but they are beating everybody good or bad.
signenderinciarte
Dude, we didn’t get over 500 till august last year. I know our starting pitching and hitting are very inconsistent ( minus Kyle Wright and Max) but we will get there eventually. Might be time to bring up somebody like Waters. And btw nobody will trade for Duvall
TradeAcuna
I don’t care what happen last year and so should others – it means nothing because they turned their season around with trades and Freeman.
At this point, Duvall is no longer my main worry – I want Ozuna gone. That will likely not happen.
signenderinciarte
He’s honestly one of our better hitters right now ( which isn’t saying much). Need to trade Ian, trade Duvall and some prospects for somebody like Mancini. The Braves should target Casey Mize in a Ian trade.

The Ozzie hate is also a freezing cold take. Multi Silver Slugger, All Star yeah don’t think he deserves that hate.
SoCalBrave
This guy (with the always changing and stupidly long name) said the same things last year when the team was losing and when they won he was celebrating like he never had a doubt. Worst fair weather fan ever. Don’t pay attention to anything he says.
Silas
Brilliant. Another bonehead move by the fish.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
I don’t see a lose here for the Braves, but AA is going to have to come up with an August miracle to match 2021
brandons-3
I don’t see where that miracle can happen. Last year, there was an obvious hole in the outfield. With Rosario on the way back and Acuña eventually going to play right everyday, there’s no place you could add someone.
Guys just need to start playing better. Now, say, if you chose to mix up the chemistry by trying to unload Ozuna, Rosario, or Duvall, that’s an option, but won’t happen. Dudes just need to play better.
MarlinsFanBase
I admit that I’m not sure why this move happened. I have a feeling that the Marlins have never been fond of Dunand ever since the new ownership came in because Dunand being A*Roids family. But if we were being fair, Dunand should still be with us getting more opportunities.
RunDMC
Love seeing the Braves fans pitch a fit though they’re about the same record this time last year WITH presumed savior Freddie and a 100% healthy Acuna. Keep Calm and Carry On.
Smacky
d’Arnaud and Ozuna also had torn up hands by this time last year too. Times were so hard they ran out Lucroy, Smith, and the guy who did a basketball ref impersonation at catcher.
RunDMC
Oh, Kevan Smith — how I loathe thee. A barely backup C starting b/c of depth issues. Fast forward this year and we have our backup C (Contreras) DH-ing and playing COF swinging a hot stick. How times change.
andrewgauldin
Guy is from Miami, has a good showing in a couple games, gets sent down. He gets DFA’d, 2 marlin infielders hit the IL. Great…
formerlyz
They trade for Luke Williams and add him to the 40 man for no reason to lose people to the Braves…
Meanwhile, they then lose Wendle and Anderson again, and Jerar Encarnacion, who is clearly ready, on the 40 man roster, sits in the minors for 3 weeks too long at this point, and counting
14 1 run losses, with a positive run differential. Sounds exactly like last season. Bullpen cant hold a lead to save their lives
DarkSide830
Encarnacion has played 13 AAA games.
formerlyz
And it was obvious he didnt need it, and I’m not saying that b/c of the numbers he put up. I said it here a couple of weeks ago. Watch what he is doing, and you see he cant really get much more from being down there. He is a totally different hitter than he previously was. His balance at the plate, his swing, and also his discipline are much better. Watch his head movement. No reason for him to be there anymore, and he is on the 40 man roster, so these extra moves arent necessary
Chris Delgado
13 games, 19k’s 2bb. Clearly not ready yet.
You Can Put It In The Books
Run differential can be misleading. They’ve had 2 outlier games out of 46 where they won 11-3. Without the two outliers, they’d have a -12 DIFF. Looking at their lineup coupled with very good starting pitching, the -12 feels about right.
formerlyz
The point is they cant hold leads and lose every close game. That’s what it means. They only win by big margins and lose everything that’s close
You Can Put It In The Books
Another big win likely coming today lol. I get your point now though. They need to string together some wins when late and close. I believe their luck will turn around at some point.
formerlyz
I dont believe it b/c they lost 30 1 run games last year, and like 20 more 2 run games, and the bullpen is even worse
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, I don’t understand why people keep saying that the Marlins problem is hitting. While we don’t have a juggernaut offense, our offense and starting pitching have been handing leads to our bullpen for all of last year and all of this year, and our bullpen has shown that they haven’t found a lead that they can’t blow.
formerlyz
15 1 run losses now, and what was that, 3 more blown leads tonight?
signenderinciarte
Does anyone else agree with me when I say we need to start Arcia everyday?
SoCalBrave
Nope. Arcia is good in small doses.

Joe needs some training “tips” from his Uncle Al
MarlinsFanBase
Angel Presinal and Anthony Galea are being watched carefully by MLB. The other “medical” facilities have been closed. Dunand will have a hard time finding his uncle’s “talent”. Injectable Flintstones vitamins aren’t as easy to get from his uncle’s hookup as they used to be.
