The Red Sox have traded reliever Silvino Bracho to the Braves for cash considerations, according to announcements from both teams. Atlanta has a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so no further move was necessary.
Boston had just designated Bracho for assignment this afternoon. He finds another landing spot fairly quickly, and he’ll presumably get an opportunity to make his season debut at some point shortly. The Red Sox had selected Bracho onto the major league roster on Tuesday, but they designated him for assignment without his appearing in an MLB game. The 29-year-old is seeking his first big league outing since 2020 after spending the past year and a half in Triple-A.
Despite his lack of recent MLB experience, Bracho was an appealing target for the Atlanta front office based on the strength of his minor league performance. He’s worked 31 1/3 innings over 18 outings with the Sox’s top affiliate in Worcester, posting a 3.16 ERA. The righty has punched out an excellent 29.3% of opponents while walking only four of the 123 hitters he’s faced. He’ll add a multi-inning possibility to the middle frames for skipper Brian Snitker.
Bracho owns a 4.82 ERA in 89 2/3 career big league innings. Most of that time was compiled with the 2015-18 Diamondbacks. He’s made just one MLB appearance in the past three years, owing in part to a Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2019. Bracho is out of minor league option years, so he’ll have to stick on the active roster or be designated for assignment again.

Hope you guys like really cool names over there in Atlanta!
I saw him pitch in person during spring training. I don’t remember his pitching. But he looks good on the mound with that intimidating beard.

It’s actually Gregor Blanco in disguise.

Ian just needs to work on adding a slider to his arsenal and start using his curveball more. It’s hard for a 2 pitch starter to be effective every time out if his pitches aren’t hitting the perfect spots and his last 2 outtting are examples of that. The braves may need to send him down to triple A to work on some things including a cutter or slider. Kyle wright has been hat 5-7 pitches in his arsenal he doesn’t use them all a lot but he can go to some different stuff in a game if his main pitches are working. Ian has kind of hit a wall after he was called up 2 years ago for the playoffs and I thinks it’s time he works on taking that next step in the process

Good answer! It almost looks like he doesn’t “finish” his delivery a lot of the time, if that makes sense. He sorta throws & leans back to watch, almost like an old person squinting at the newspaper.

I’m still not sure about him long term until he adds a third/fourth pitch and becomes more efficient. It seems like he has to get hitters to swing at balls, because they can barrel up his pitches in the zone (if they recognize them). His FB also generally is too straight. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

And where’s Folty?

Not playing anymore it seems in MLB after 2-12 with a plus 5 ERA for Texas in 2021

Did Bracho’s agent run the final offer by him? Did the Dodgers try to steal him away last minute? Any chance for finger pointing and speculation? I’m going back to the Freeman thread for the personal drama.

Bloom has a great knack for identifying and acquiring talented/intriguing bullpen arms. Really makes the Barnes deal look even worse.
KyleT
Nothing to do with the post. Just can’t let an article go by without taking a shot at Bloom. Sad, like a drug addict looking for his next fix.

Of course you’re entitled to your own name, but if it’s a reference to Pedroia, wasn’t he called “Muddy” Chicken?
KyleT
You caught me, I don’t know how to spell ‘Muddy’. Since we’re on it, I think its “Pink Floyd”.
Poster formerly known as . . .
It is, but I’m not.
I’m not the British band, and you’re probably not Pedroia, so I guess we’re both entitled to our own names. Carry on, MudyChicken.
KyleT
Im not named after Pedroia, Im named after the clubhouse code word for ‘Chicken & Beers’. Pedroia only got the nickname because a reporter started asking questions when they heard it once too often. Then one of the players said “Oh, thats Pedey’s nickname” — True Story.

@SoxFan1 – Matt Barnes had never pitched as well as he did in the previous 2+ months prior to his extension. His strikeout rate approached 40% and his walk rate was the lowest of his career by a wide margin. He also dominated for long stretches in the previous season so all signs pointed to Barnes rounding into a Top 5 closer in baseball. Closers with that type of stuff were signing multi-year deals starting at $15M per year (Kimbrell, Hendrix, etc), so Bloom offered Barnes a below market contract extension (2/$19M) just to gauge where he and his agent were at and much to their surprise, Barnes accepted it! Bloom and the rest of the Sox front office had to have been ecstatic at the time as they were able to sign an All-Star closer at the peak of his career to a well below market deal.
While Barnes had been pitching extremely well, part of the reason the Sox offer was smaller than expected was that the Sox and most likely Barnes’ camp as well expected some regression from his other-worldly performance to start the year.. History pointed to Barnes issuing a lot more walks than he had been letting up and allowing more HRs as well, so they settled on a number that was team friendly and obviously acceptable by Barnes himself. Some national writers lauded the deal and felt Boston got a steal at the time the deal was signed.
Even with some regression expected, no one saw Matt Barnes imploding the way that he did…no one. So I really don’t blame Bloom for offering this deal at all. You could make the case that they should have waited until the end of the year to ensure that Barnes’ breakout was sustainable but had they done that and Barnes continued to dominate, the price tag would have ballooned to at least 3/$42M and possibly even more. So Boston took a calculated risk, hoping Barnes’ success would continue and they’d have a reliable anchor in their pen at a very affordable salary. Unfortunately, Barnes’ performance and overall skills decided to take a complete nosedive within 3 weeks of signing the deal, so that made this deal seem atrocious, but plenty of due diligence was done and all signs pointed to this being a great deal; unfortunately it completely backfired on them but I don’t blame Bloom.
I am glad that the failure of this deal has not spooked Bloom. He did a mid season extension with Garrett Whitlock this year and besides the Whitlock IL injury, that contract looks like it WILL be a steal for Boston. Long story short, you win some and you lose some; the timing of Barnes’ implosion just made his deal look that much worse than it really was.

Who? Does he play for the Braves now too?
soxfan1
Just because you typed all those words does not mean it was the right decision to make even at the time. I like Chaim, but no one is immune to criticism. Keeping it as simple as that.
KyleT
“no one is immune to criticism” Too funny
What about constant criticism? Even though Chaim took over a shipwreck, rebuilt the team and restocked the minors. Red Sox made ALCS last year, and are playing fine now. Yet there’s constant criticism, excluding the few weeks during which the team went on a tear. You know, when you and all the other haters went into hiding.
Dorothy_Mantooth
@Neon Cop – Maybe Ian Anderson and Matt Barnes can get a group discount on that sports psychologist! I haven’t watched Anderson pitch much at all this season but there is no question that 90% of the issues with Barnes are located between the ears.
