The A’s are set to select the contract of infielder Vimael Machin from Triple-A Las Vegas, reports Martin Gallegos of MLB.com (Twitter link). He and right-hander Adrian Martinez are both on their way up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Martinez, already on the 40-man roster, is expected to start today’s game for Oakland. The A’s will need to make a pair of corresponding 26-man roster moves, but they already have an open 40-man spot to accommodate Machin’s selection.
Now 28 years old, Machin was the Athletics’ selection in the 2019 Rule 5 Draft (coming out of the Cubs organization). The versatile infielder stuck on the A’s roster through the shortened 2020 season, hitting just .206/.296/.238 in 71 plate appearances. He saw more limited MLB action in 2021 when he batted .125/.200/.125 in 37 trips to the plate, and the team was able to pass him through outright waivers this past April, thus removing him from the 40-man roster.
Machin has always been a strong hitter in Triple-A, and this year has been no exception. Through 292 plate appearances, he’s turned in a .324/.401/.457 batting line (120 wRC+) with four homers, 16 doubles and three triples — all while walking more often than he’s struck out (11.3% to 10.3%). He’s played all four infield positions in Las Vegas this season — albeit only one game at first base — and has also done so in the Majors.
It’s easy to take a look at Machin’s big league numbers and completely write him off, but he’s only had 108 plate appearances in the Majors and it’s hard not to be intrigued by his .307/.400/.468 output in 741 Triple-A plate appearances. At the very least, Machin has the potential to be a bat-first utilityman.
As for the 25-year-old Martinez, he’s one of two players the A’s received from the Padres in the trade that sent Sean Manaea to San Diego. Martinez made his MLB debut earlier this season and tossed 5 1/3 shutout frames in a no-decision over the Tigers. (Oakland ultimately won the game.)
Martinez has had a rockier go of it in Triple-A this year, though he’s been far better after a rough month of April that saw him yield 15 runs in 14 1/3 innings. Overall, Martinez has a 5.63 ERA in 64 innings, but that’s come in an overwhelmingly hitter-friendly setting. His 26.4% strikeout rate, 8.3% walk rate and 47.4% ground-ball rate are all more encouraging. With two minor league option years remaining beyond the current season, he ought to have ample opportunity to establish himself as a possible regular in the Oakland rotation over the next few seasons — particularly with Daulton Jefferies likely done for the season and Frankie Montas quite likely to be traded at some point in the next five weeks.

Nope. Manchin is a AAAA scrub, the A’s should bring up Langeliers and let him and Murphy split DH/C time. Sick of these non-prospect scrubs wasting our time. This team is routinely playing Elvis Andrus at SS over Nick Allen, when Elvis isn’t making routine plays there anymore and Allen is a gold glove already there. Its like the A’s are tanking as hard as possible to try and get the #1 pick or something. Pache’s OBP might go under .200, like, cmon….
Nick Allen is looking like he might be Jose Altuve with the GOAT defense too, A’s fans actually have someone good to watch now but the morons are playing washed Andrus over him because life is hell and A’s fans have been in there since 1990.
sorrynotsorry
If Allen could hit it would be a different story. Not defending the A’s management but gold glove?
ARC 2
Allen is better than any other player they have brought up. SS is not the position to expect a #4 hitter. Bigger problem is DH and 1B where weak hitting players at power hitting positions. Hard to believe they can’t find real hitters at DH and 1B instead of weak hitters.
A'sfaninUK
Allen is hitting perfectly fine, and already has made plays of the week, watch the games, casual. He’s made adjustments and looks like a potential superstar now. The dumb A’s front office keeps telling Kots to play Elvis everyday because he makes the most money and they’re trying to hope he catches fire enough so someone will trade for him, but he’s just cooked, he’s never getting better, not on this team.
ARC 2
Allen and Bride is the only A’s players that are exciting to see.

Josh Donaldson was optioned a number of times before he broke out. Trying to be positive today in a country where nothing makes sense to me anymore
A'sfaninUK
Donaldson had a non-linear career path due to changing positions so much, I know what you’re trying to say but unless Machin has made massive changes to his swing and plate approach, there’s no way he’s anything but miserable as a MLB hitter, and he’s not an elite defender like Nick Allen is, he’s just blocking a place on the roster. Trying to turn AAAA guys into gold doesn’t happen to the A’s with hitters anymore, just pitchers (Hi Cole Irvin).

Langeliers isn’t ready. He’s hitting .272/.368/.496 in AAA with a home stadium that is a launching pad.
A'sfaninUK
lmao as if AAA numbers at all, players get bumped up to the bigs with awful AAA numbers too.

Time to give other players a chance in a A’s team that is trying to find some identity, a steady direction to where they are going. Vegas anybody?
A'sfaninUK
Las Vegas is not a pro sports town and the Raiders have proved what a disaster it is to move teams there.
Love how you clowns moved from Portland and Nashville to LV over the last 20 years, lol its always the same result: A’s at Coli.
sorrynotsorry
Golden Knights on line 1.
ARC 2
Vegas property owners just saw a big bump in taxes. So you know they don’t want another $1.5 billion bill for another team when it looks like a NBA team is coming soon.
Rsox
An NBA franchise would/will share T-Mobile arena with the Golden Knights if/when the time comes so probably no real issues there. I’m not sure if Allegiant Stadium can be purposed for Baseball or not but i doubt very much the A’s want to go back to sharing a stadium with the Raiders and i also doubt that Vegas is in a hurry to build another major sports facility
A'sfaninUK
Zero titles, no real fanbase. Just wasting everyones time.
Steinbrenner2728
Any large city can fill up a 17,000 capacity arena, Bill. MLB and NFL are different market-wise and logistics-wise. Why hasn’t there been a relocation in baseball since 1971 or 2004? Because no team like the A’s would be dumb enough to move from a top-5 market to a market in Nevada ranked somewhere around 40th.
ARC 2
Raiders own the stadium so they do not want to share the stadium at all. It was a free stadium for Raiders owner Davis paid to him by the peoiople of Vegas and hotel tax.. Vegas mayor even said they do not have the money to buy the A’s a stadium.
sorrynotsorry
Raiders had a 94% attendance rate last season. Not bad for a Nevada market.
sorrynotsorry
The Raiders have been there for 1 whole season without full blown COVID.
You don’t watch much hockey do you?
Steinbrenner2728
94%… how many came from nearby Southern California? How many of them were fans of another team? The Raiders-Broncos games showed more orange than they did at the Oakland and L.A. Coliseums… Bill. And well, baseball and football market operate differently. There’s a reason all MLB teams are located in big markets and/or large metropolitan areas above Milwaukee.
Zachary D Manprin
Portland? You mean Sacramento?
A'sfaninUK
No, “A’s to Portland” had WAY more volume than to Sac. LV is their new fave fake city to hypothetically drone on about….
Ivan Grushenko
These numbers don’t emphasize enough the ridiculously hitter friendly environment in Vegas. Martinez’s numbers seem pretty good and Machin’s numbers pretty bad. Yes you allude to it but your lead sentences don’t offer that conclusion
A'sfaninUK
Ok but by even stating that, what do you mean? Actually-good hitters should have a batting average of .500? What if a guy is actually mashing + gets the park advantage? What do those numbers look like? Answer: probably like these other inflated ones. We cannot tell, its a blind spot league+park.
That park advantage is also why LV cant have outdoor baseball. Its too hot there. DBacks probably moving to Henderson anyway so NV will get a team maybe.
Ivan Grushenko
For example Frank Schwindel hit .317/.362/.630. The .457 SLG is a sign of lack of power. This makes his walks less likely in the normal parks in the majors

DA MACHINNNN
geoffb1982
I hope he succeeds. Elvis Andrus has no business playing on a team destined to lose over 100 games. Time to give young guys a chance, for better or worse
Cosmo2
Absolute shame what was done to this team. That starting lineup is painful to look at.
pinstripes17
They’re an absolute joke, the Yankees slept through that entire series and somehow ended up with 3 wins.
ARC 2
The worst hitting lineup by the A’s in the last 50 years. Its like the Yanks got to face a AA team for 3 games. I just wish the NY media would complain real loud on how the A’s owners are making a mockery of baseball by putting out a bad team on purpose. Its that movie major league just A’s instead of indians but going for record of loses.
