White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada should be activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, manager Tony La Russa told MLB.com’s Scott Merkin and other reporters. Moncada’s placement (due to a right hamstring strain) was retroactive to June 18, so Tuesday would represent the minimum 10 days for the infielder.
Between this brief IL visit and the oblique injury that sidelined Moncada for the first month of the season, Moncada seems to have barely gotten out of the blocks in 2022, hitting only .179/.230/.292 in 113 plate appearances. While the Sox are happy to remove a name from their increasingly crowded injured list, they’ll need Moncada to get back to his old form in order for Chicago to start making a move in the playoff race.
Let’s catch up on some other injury situations from around the AL Central…
- The Twins placed veteran reliever Joe Smith on the 15-day injured list due to tightness in his upper trap muscle. Left-hander Jovani Moran was called up from Triple-A in the corresponding move. Now in his 15th Major League season, Smith has 2.78 ERA over 22 2/3 innings out of Minnesota’s bullpen, with his 62.7% grounder rate helping make up for an unimpressive set of Statcast metrics.
- The Royals placed right-hander Josh Staumont on the 15-day IL (retroactive to June 23) due to a neck strain. In corresponding moves, K.C. also optioned lefty Foster Griffin to Triple-A and called up right-handers Jackson Kowar and Matt Peacock. Staumont told MLB.com’s Anne Rogers and other reporters that his neck problem had been “lingering for the past couple games,” and Rogers noted that Staumont’s velocity had clearly been impacted over those last few outings. Staumont has a 3.81 ERA, 27.6% strikeout rate, and a high 14.7% walk rate over 26 innings for the Royals this season, and six of Staumont’s 17 walks allowed have come over his last four games.
- Austin Meadows will start a minor league rehab assignment this week, with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch telling reporters (including Chris McCosky of The Detroit News) that Meadows will likely start game action on Tuesday. Meadows was placed on the COVID-related IL on June 17 after testing positive for the coronavirus, but he has now cleared health protocols.

The Sox are having one of those seasons. Plenty of talent, but they can’t seem to get out of their own way with injuries and slumps. Still plenty of time, but probably a season to write off and come back stronger next year.

White Sox team update. Players are beginning to realize they underperformed their expected value to the team. With a few exceptions of Vaughn, Burger, Cease & old trail dog Abreu the rest of the team are just overrated underperforming stiffs. Give and person wishing as chance in baseball would surely put more effort into this team than the rest are. I blame nobody except the players. TLR trying to screw up a team couldn’t do this so horrendously. PLayer oversight of thier own willingness to be as good as expected. @whitesox don’t deserve a playoff spot even if for some way they’d back up into one
ChiSoxCity
Trade Moncada for someone who actually plays.
IronBallsMcGinty
Burger has looked better this season
Samuel
Not wild about the Sox. They play sloppy baseball.
But I do like Bruger. He tries every pitch. His head is in the game. He’s not a great defender, but he works on getting better.
This man has come back from a ruptured achilles tendon in 2018, then got caught up in COVID affecting minor league players. Worked his way to the majors. I can only imagine the mental and physical hurdles he had to clear.
Doesn’t even wear gold chains during the game and swagger when he makes a mental or physical error. The man’s on the wrong team.
ChiSoxCity
You could have, and should have omitted your last paragraph. Cultural biases aside, Moncada is useless to the team if he can’t play. Let’s just leave it at that.
knuck2
He actually had back to back Achilles ruptures.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Lot of disturbing code here: being on the wrong team, not wearing gold chains, swagger. I thought those backward “you know your place” attitudes died in the 30s after the game was integrated. Guess some people never change.

Nope, you certainly don’t.

Finding racism where it isn’t are we ? Maybe it’s just the humor in seeing a guy dress and carry himself like he’s playing like Ricky Henderson when in reality he’s playing like a double A player. Take your race hustling elsewhere.

Burger is a butcher with his glove, unfortunately.

Samuel showing off his true colors. Guess the “right” team would be dressed in white and wearing hoods.
Mystery Team
What can they get for a guy who isn’t very good? Moncada was touted as something much different than he actually is. He doesn’t do much on the field that makes me excited as a fan in fact he’s quite disappointing. He doesn’t hit for much power or average. He’s not a good baserunner he has little speed. He’s not a great defender. He’s not clutch in any way and the dude’s always hurt. He gets paid like he does all those things though doesn’t he? Thank goodness the White Sox got Kopech in that deal. I mean Sale has had his issues but at least when he plays he’s great. Someone might want to tell the White Sox that just because a guy is Cuban doesn’t mean he’s a good ball player.
Franco22
Agreed, you can’t be a .300 hitter if you can’t suit up. At least a .250 hitter that plays everyday gives you 1 hit per game. Play great defense , hit .250 throughout the lineup ( the league team avg.) , help the pitchers and you win most games.

Remember when that dude posted how the Tigers won the Meadows-Paredes trade about a million times? That was fun.
alproof
Another Al Avila classic!
stymeedone
It looked like a good trade then, and should still work out. Paredes has been injured plenty himself. Doubt Meadows has become unable to hit the longball. Still too early to call it either way.
You Can Put It In The Books
The Rays got a Comp B pick along with Paredes, who is turning into a productive bat. Meanwhile, Meadows’ power has disappeared, long before whatever injury he has now.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Yes! Recall a lot of us held him to account- noting not only the Rays preference for well rounded OFs, but also just, Rays. Dealer beware. Wonder what happened to that dude?

He disappeared as soon as the season started… much like the Tigers playoff chances….

Tony is a good manager! His time likely has passed, just too old! However, hard to put too much blame on him with all the injuries! He has earned the good will to work his way out of it.I If no let him go at the end of the season. Hall Of Famers earn some leeway from management, but not the fans!
Samuel
The roster construction is the problem.
Worse yet, the Sox are at their max payroll ceiling based on revenue. Their farm system is literally devoid of quality prospects. They should not be in this position so few years after coming out of a rebuild.
They can fire TLR and try to fix the roster. But short of Dylan Cease, Luis Robert, and Andrew Vaughn – for one reason or another their players are not attractive enough in trade to bring back a haul (and I’m sure they want to keep those 3 players). Take Tim Anderson, a sensational hitter, but a terrible SS. He wants to continue to play SS and will have an attitude problem if he’s not allowed to.
The owner is old and needs to let go. Don’t know if he gives the franchise to his family or sells.
Franco22
I agree on TA comment he creates to many distractions on and off the field.
Some groin injury.

TA is an jerk plain and simple none of that article shocks me. The dude hasn’t shut up since he got in the league. Look at the drama he just caused with the Yankees because he got called out for being the big mouth that he is. One thing for sure is that he loves him some IL.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Samuel suggesting that somehow the Sox might consider Cease, Robert or Vaughn because they’re the ones who have value. We’ll just leave that comment right there as exhibit A of baseball acumen.
Franco22
You are forgetting the manager of the team that beat the Sox in the playoffs (Dusty Baker) is as old as TLR so age or being old has nothing to do with it. You just don’t like people who know the game. Sox are only 5 games out behind Twins whose rotation doesn’t match a healthy Sox staff. When the pen gets healthy things will be different. TLR has been through this before. They are fortunate to have his experience through all the injuries.
Augusto Barojas
Baker is almost 5 years younger than Tony. Nobody La Russa’s age has ever coached an NFL or NBA game. Only two other people his age have ever managed in MLB – Jack McKeon a few years ago for less than a season, and Connie Mack like 80 years ago. Yes, age matters. Tony has started Leury freaking Garcia hitting 1st, 2nd, or 3rd SEVEN times this year! He has cost them enormously. ESPN wrote an article “was La Russa’s 1-2 intentional walk of Muncy the worst ever”. I’ve been a fan for almost 50 years, and yes, TLR is the worst manager ever. The physical and mental demands of coaching a pro sports team are not a good fit for someone almost 80. This team has talent but is under .500 since last July, and have played like they are half dead most of that time – just like the energy of their manager. There is a reason why the average age of AL managers is 52. La Russa is more than a quarter century older than that, utterly ridiculous. An embarrassment to the city, the fans, and frankly the sport.
Every human being declines. If Michael Jordan suited up now at age 60 to play in the NBA, he would be the worst player ever. There is such a thing as too old, and we’ve seen it for the past year and a half with La Russa. I’ve had family members in nursing homes who are younger than him, the guy is half dead and on his last legs. Plus had had alcohol abuse which certainly has not helped him maintain any high level of acumen.
2012orioles
Saw this stat that when laury Garcia starts, the Sox are 15-28. 18-8 when not. This was before the Orioles series when they went 0-2 with 1-0 without. I’m not a Larussa hater but he cannot be in the lineup so much
Samuel
Yes, Laury Garcia hurts the team when he plays. He’s a typical White Sox player – zero Baseball IQ on the field.
But since you too are blaming Larussa, look at the roster and explain who should be playing instead.
nrd1138
Garcia has been around for about 10 years, I doubt its baseball IQ, more like just lack of talent, at least at second, where he booted a ball in a game recently. I just do not understand how Garcia is still around now. I get Mendick is hurt, but there are no minor leaguers that have the same type of skills that have a higher ceiling than Garcia does at this point in his career?
Thanks for the memories Garcia, but I think its time to go.
I mean yesterday Abreu boots a ground to him, as well, with some of these silly errors being made, you have to start wondering if someones got money on a game somewhere?
LaRussa is too busy sleeping in the dugout to care though. He is old, and well past his best days, I mean are you seriously telling me Renteria could not do the same job as LaRussa after looking at the past season and a half??
Franco22
You are forgetting that when Garcia has to play it’s because TA wants a day off. Last week he had two days off when he’s only played 40 some games this year. His personal off field antics have given him a different type of groin injury mentally.
Jack Buckley
I live in Arizona but my son goes crazy, this should be a superteam, on top of sucking, they are extremely unlikeable
Dumpster Divin Theo
Why are they extremely unlikable? They actually have great team chemistry and are fun to watch- when completely healthy, which they haven’t been for some time. They’ve been hurt and have underachieved- but Gio, Jose, Grandal and TA are among the most respected players among their peers; Liam, Eloy and Lance Lynn are fun fan friendly players; and Robert and Cease are exciting breakout talents. You sound like you were born in 1908 (no problem if that’s the case- kudos and good health).
flamingbagofpoop
Extremely unlikeable might be a bit harsh, but for people that aren’t biased white sox fans…despite the fact that they have some solid players, they’re a bad, sloppy, inconsistent team. If their broadcasters weren’t some of my favorite to listen to, I’d have a really hard time watching their games.

Fire La Russa!

Every year it seems like I keep hearing “This team would be World Series contenders if they weren’t injured.”
nrd1138
So.. whats the over/under on Moncada getting hurt again? What.. like 3, 4 games?
Too many guys are getting hurt with injuries like hamstrings. Either the player has to go (unlikely), or the conditioning staff for the Sox need to go. There should not be this many stupid soft tissue injuries on this club (or any club). Before I hear the BS about calling me being a gym coach… This is a billion dollar club right? Well one would thing you would want to keep the players, that you are paying millions of dollars to .. yknow. to play baseball, on the field.. y’know.. playing baseball. This team did not have this problem when Herm Schneider was running the show.. Players called him ‘Dr Pain’ cause his job was to get you back on the field as quick as possible.. Heck guys did not want to wind up on his bench getting worked on. Hermie retired and I have seen nothing but players being out due to soft tissue injuries. Ask any trainer worth their salt and they will tell you most such injuries are avoidable if you condition your body properly. Engel, Moncada, Anderson (among others), These guys are needed in the lineup and quite frankly I’m tired of superfans using an excuse about how this team would be great if not for the injuries.
