2:55pm: Boone provided nebulous but worrisome updates on each of Green and Gil this afternoon (via Max Goodman and Laura Albanese of Newsday). Gil’s injury is “significant,” per Boone, who didn’t specify whether surgery may be on the table. The organization fears Green could also be facing a notable absence but is awaiting further tests.
12:04pm: Yankees reliever Chad Green left yesterday’s loss to the Orioles after just 11 pitches, and the team later announced he’d experienced some forearm discomfort (via Brendan Kuty of NJ.com). They’ll know more upon receiving the results of an MRI today, and Green conceded postgame that he’s “concerned about it to a certain extent” (quote via Erik Boland of Newsday). “Obviously, when you’re dealing with an arm injury, you’re not really sure what can happen or what’s really going on. We’ll get it checked out … and go from there.”
Even if the imaging results are good, it seems a precautionary injured list stint could be on the table. That’s unfamiliar territory for Green, who hasn’t landed on the IL since his 2016 season was cut short by a forearm tendon problem. The right-hander returned the following year seemingly no worse for wear, and he’s been one of the game’s predominant bullpen workhorses in the half-decade since then. Going back to the start of the 2017 season, only four relievers have taken on a heavier workload — and that’s not counting the 15 starts Green made in 2019.
He owns a sterling 2.87 ERA as a reliever over that stretch, striking out a lofty 33.1% of opposing hitters while showcasing atypically excellent control (5.9% walk rate) for a late-game arm. Skipper Aaron Boone has deployed Green as a high-leverage stopper throughout that run, often to great success. His strikeout and walk numbers haven’t been dominant over 15 frames this season, but Green owns a flat 3.00 ERA and a 14.5% swinging strike rate that isn’t far off his prior years’ marks.
More out of the Bronx:
- New York is also dealing with some injury concerns at the minor league level. Prospect Luis Gil pulled himself from Wednesday night’s Triple-A start after experiencing an elbow injury (h/t to Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette). Yesterday, Boone told reporters (including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com) that Gil was set for a visit with team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad. As with Green, more information will be known upon further testing, but Gil is a key depth arm for the Yankees. The 23-year-old made his first six MLB starts last season, posting a 3.07 ERA across 29 1/3 innings. He hasn’t performed well thus far in 2022 with their top affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, struggling with both walks and home runs en route to a 7.89 ERA over six starts. Nevertheless, Gil was called up for a spot start against the White Sox last week. He’s the only pitcher outside the primary five of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jordan Montgomery, Luis Severino and Jameson Taillon to start a game for New York this season.
- In non-injury matters, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN takes a look at how Aaron Judge’s incredible start to the season could impact his free agent trajectory. Obviously, posting a .307/.381/.664 line through his first 36 games will help Judge’s market value, but there aren’t many clean comparison points for a player with his profile hitting the market in advance of his age-31 season. Judge famously rejected the Yankees’ seven-year, $213.5MM extension offer in Spring Training, and McDaniel feels he’d be in line to top $250MM if he continues to perform at a career-best pace. McDaniel also floats some possible landing spots if Judge were to leave the Bronx, hearing from rival executives who speculate that the Mets might relish the opportunity to make a run at the three-time All-Star.

It’s just May. The Sox are hitting finally and it’s just too early to count most teams out especially with the extra playoff spot. Also injuries will still end up playing a big role as usual. Not hoping for any one to get hurt but Judge’s history suggests he will miss time. I hope I’m wrong because it’s hard to root against him even as a Sox fan (radio playoff episode aside).

Former Expos catcher Luis Perez said that he could obtain steroids from a clubhouse attendant for the Phillies, from page 101:
[Luis Perez] said that he knew of clubhouse employees with other teams who were similarly called upon to obtain drugs for players, including in particular a visiting clubhouse attendant in Philadelphia.
Jeff Cooper’s concern of Lenny Dykstra’s apparent steroid use, from page 68:
Philadelphia’s then-head athletic trainer Jeff Cooper told us that during this period he observed a Phillies player whose use of steroids was “obvious.” Cooper would not divulge the player’s identity to us. He told us that he approached the general manager [Lee Thomas] to report his concerns, and the general manager advised Cooper that he should raise the subject with the player directly. Cooper then did raise the issue with the player, who said it was none of Cooper’s business. The matter went no further.

BTW, DarkSide, these Phillies have been suspended for PEDs:
J.C. Romero, Jan. 6, 2009
Freddy Galvis, June 19, 2012
Carlos Ruiz, Nov. 27, 2012
Antonio Bastardo, Aug. 5, 2013
Daniel Stumpf, April 14, 2016
Alec Asher, June 16, 2016
The dates refer to the day their suspension was announced.
See, this is why living in the past and pointing fingers about PEDs is a pointless exercise. Every club had users, and it’s likely not all of them got caught.

Sad for the sport but team championships have to remain because every time likely had users and probably still do to a lesser degree as tests to diagnose are usually a couple of years behind. To me, it’s fraud like a white collar worker or executive who lies on his resume. Both ended up with jobs they wouldn’t have gotten or inflated salaries because of their deceit. In my world it would likely take a way a raise or bonus for me or others I know because my employer has a strict budget. In baseball besides earning money that could have gone to others, their stats distorts records and has ruined the chances of others to get rewards and benefits (i.e. HOF ballots).

Where did the Padres suddenly get so much money? Just be happy Homer is producing.
Javia135
It’s true the Padres are dropping over $40 million in payroll this offseason. That comes from losing 3 starting pitchers(at least) and a starting OF. Do you think the Padres will spend that money on Judge, or hometown hero and the owner of the only No-hitter in Padres history Joe Musgrove?
Cosmo2
With arb raises and such they’re not likely to be actually reducing payroll by that much.
Javia135
The Padres are actually dropping anywhere from $74 mil to over $80 million off their books. Arb raises are not going to account for half of that.

Plus, he knows #13 is available for the Yankees and he can undo the mistake he made by not going with them first time!

Getting another reliever at the deadline won’t be much of a problem.
The way Gil has pitched this year, I’ve been wondering if there was something going on.
As for Judge, there has been no question about his talent. The question is can he stay off the IL. So far, this year and last, the answer is yes. The new strength and conditioning program has been awesome.
DR2020
True words. Hopefully they will resign him.
Yankee Clipper
“ The new strength and conditioning program has been awesome.”
Yeah, talk about behind the scenes, unheralded heroes? This program presumably turned the entire roster from one rotating IL stint to one of the healthiest teams in the big leagues.
And as far as the ‘pen goes? Ducky always says this too – Cash can build a ‘pen. He’s excellent at it. His BPs are always super strong and somehow they can identify guys like Holmes and through underlying metrics and turn him into an elite reliever by telling him to throw his best pitch more….
brodie-bruce
@yc glad to see your team doing well even though i’m not a fan, i still respect your team and how they always put a competitive team out there year in and year out. anyhow have you heard from ducky lately i haven’t seen him post for a while, but while i got yc so far how’s the health of your sp’s and big bats it seems like the last few years on paper you guys were al favs in the ws but the wheels came off in the postseason because of your sp or health of your big guns or is it because boone is a tool and just does what the fo says.
Yankee Clipper
Brodie: Yes, sir. I hope you are doing well. I was not hopeful when the season started, but their performance is making me a believer. I’m shocked at their rotation performance. It has to be something with Blake & their philosophy because that’s the only thing that makes sense.
As far as Ducky, I’m not sure. I hope he’s alright. I like to think he’s somewhere grouse hunting and taking a break from the online community. Knowing Ducky, he likes nature, enjoys peace & serenity, & loves the Yankees, so I imagine he’s about as close to heaven on earth as one can be, or at least, I hope so.
Ducky’s a good dude. A genuine person, and someone that many people on here gravitate toward, which says something, ya know?
Thanks, Brodie, I wish you the best this year, stay in touch, my friend. Good luck this year, man!

Update TJ surgery for Gil. Who takes his place as their next in line starter? Schmidt? King? A trade? What do you guys think?
YankeesBleacherCreature
Yikes. In a pinch, I’d call up ManBan. If one of the starting five goes down for any length of time, I’d slot King in.
Yankee Clipper
I’d say Manny or Schmidt. Schmidt has pitched well, really well, but Manny has more experience, obviously. I could see them rotating them a bit too, depending on needs.
Sucks for Gil, I hope he recovers well from this. The biggest area of concern for him is that TJS guys typically have a hard time recovering control – obviously that was his biggest struggle to begin with.
JerryBird
Aaron Judge’s numbers are far and above anything he has done so far in his career. It is typical for a player in a contract season. It amazes me how a player can step it up to a higher level when free agency looms. He has always been capable, but this year is exceptional. Wherever he ends up, I hope he can maintain this level for years to come. It would be good for him, baseball and free agency.
mike156
Judge’s 2017 season has a very similar slash line, and his finished with 8 BWAR. Contract season excellence is a real thing, but this isn’t a new level for him

emac22
I don’t think that there is any question Judge is producing numbers worthy of the annual rate he wants.
Unfortunately, it’s a bad investment to pay that much for that long to an older player of that size.
They need to trade him now while his value is as high as it can get..
I know that’s hard to do when you’re playing so well but you don’t get top value for players who aren’t playing well, they have lots of options for right field and you’d be getting something really valuable in return.
If they plan to resign him and just completely bust the teams budget so they can also compete, I take it back and they should resign him. I just don’t think they should sign him if they plan to fit him into the budget by making other adjustments to the roster.
In other words if they think he’s good enough to get the deal he wants and to pay tax on that deal go for it. IF not trade him before losing him for nothing. The goal is winning not popularity, excitement & looking pretty.
I hope.
AverageCommenter
Why would they trade Judge while on a 100+ win pace? You are insane.
emac22
Because he’s way too big of an asset to lose for nothing.
Are you really saying you would let him go for nothing just to get his production for the next few months?
YankeesBleacherCreature
I understand what you’re saying but the Yankees aren’t going to trade him. He’s got more intrinsic value to the team than what another team can offer and the fans will riot. It’s NY and popularity matters. Judge will not be signing an extension with anyone and will test the market. If he’s leaving for sure, I’d take the QO comp pick. Again, I’m not against trading Judge but it won’t happen even if the Yankees have a complete collapse from now through July.
Ronk325
In the history of not just baseball but all of sports, how many times has a team with championship aspirations traded away their best player mid season?
emac22
Interesting reply but I’m looking for a conversation about the idea as opposed to a review of other peoples decisions or any kind of predictions.
The contract for a player his size, age & with career numbers has zero precedent anyway.
Ronk325
I’m not denying that paying Judge $30+ a year into his 40s would be a mistake. The point is a team can’t trade their best player in the middle of a season in which they’re trying to win it all. If the Braves followed this train of thought with Freeman last year, they wouldn’t have made the postseason, let alone won the WS
kingbum
You’d be ,nuts breaking up the Judge/Stanton duo now. Both are healthy and both are feeding off of each other like it was always intended. I’m a Boston fan I’d love to see the Yankees make that colossal mistake. Not even Brian Cashman is dumb enough to do that. Just like when it’s all said and done Boston can’t walk away from Xander. They will get one of them wild card spots and the Yankess will win 100+ this season barring injury. This has all the makings of a Dodgers vs Yankees world series this year don’t mess it up…..or do I won’t mind.
You Can Put It In The Books
Never. Emac must be off his meds.
When it was a game.
First name that popped in my mind. First place and on pace to win over 100 games so trade your best player who is a fan favorite. I see no problem here.
Tml
I know you are getting a lot of ridicule but it is only because people are answering out of emotion. They are talking about the playoffs, you are talking about the best interests of the team.
In reality, the value of trading him is only high if they feel the bidding will get outrageous. He might want 9 years at $40 mm per year bc of the Scherzer deal. Everyone assumes the $36mm for Trout and Cole is the benchmark. Notwithstanding that, Judge is this generation’s Derek Jeter. Judge’s jersey has historically been #1 or #2. Long term contracts are adverse to teams but necessary to keep together talent. At least Judge will have inherent value to offset your concerns.
Yankee Clipper
Emac22: So, an interesting postulation it is. It begs the question that most FO entertain nowadays: When do we trade “X” player to maximize value if we can’t re-sign him? And, is that worth the “franchise value” we lose (fans, jerseys, publicity).
So, here’s my objective opinion: given the Yankees current trajectory, and taking the aforementioned values into account, I don’t think the value of trading Judge would yield the necessary benefit, even if that means losing his services altogether. However, there is one exception, and that exception is a proven talent that could step in and perform, like Juan Soto. I’m not suggesting the Nats would do that trade because they wouldn’t, it’s an example.
But, there is still one major problem that a trade, regardless of the talent acquisition, cannot account for, and that is: Team chemistry & leadership. While typically that’s not a prohibitive reason for a trade, in the NYY’s case, a 1st place team, their chief performer, & their team leader, *could* have unintended consequences.
So, I submit the FO’s decision comes down to weighing the team’s future value in trade acquisition v. current value in a championship with Judge.
Just my two cents, man, but I get the value proposition to which you are referring.
Flyby
Emac i see where you are going for the long term thoughts and appreciate thinking outside the box, but right now i would think the yankees are in the top 4 teams to win the world series. Is that not the goal of a team to win the world series especially with a team that has a lot of big contracts on the books? If that is not the goal of a team why would any team trade major piece(s) for the future for rental in Aaron Judge? Short of a team blowing half the luxury threshold on him or an injury, if Judge is traded midseason and can not be extended a qualifying offer you bet Boras is going open free agency for him especially when you consider his top competition is Gallo, Nimmo and Conforto if you call it that.
I also would like to add that in the last couple of seasons midseason trades do not involve a ton of higher end prospects (ie you not getting a gleybar for chapman type deal) so you probably dramatically lower your world series chances and probably take back a lesser prospect than you may get in the draft.
The only way i see a Judge trade happening is if the yankees fall off a cliff completely and does a major firesale which is always a possibility. I think MLBPA might even do some whispering partly because of the endorsements and jerseys etc of Judge and Yankees. Do you think Aaron Judge and the KC Royals bring in anywhere near Yankees and Judge..
Poster formerly known as . . .
“Skipper Aaron Boone has deployed Green as a high-leverage stopper throughout that run, often to great success.”
And in the more recent past, too often to failure.
Green owned 7 losses last year, one less than Cole who led the team with 8 losses. Since 2020, Green’s lost 11 games, tied with Cole and Gumby for the lead in losses. With one less loss last year, it wouldn’t have been a Wild Card game in Fenway.
In 2017, Green was magnificent. Lately, he’s been victimized by the long ball, 20 since 2020. I thought they should’ve traded him in the offseason when his WAR would’ve brought back a decent haul in trade. If Boone didn’t use him so much in high-leverage innings, he’d be a better asset, but Boone doesn’t seem to acknowledge that Green’s not the lights-out reliever he was in 2017. I hope Green’s injury isn’t serious, but I won’t miss the agita I get when he takes the mound in a clutch situation.
I hope Loaisiga can get back to where he was last year, too. He’s been a disappointment.
Ancient Pistol
This X100. Green, much like Chapman, is the type of reliver where you don’t know what you are going to get. He could strike out the side or give up five runs.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, we’ve seen a disturbing trend that is prevalent in baseball, but specifically with the Yankees: Boone’s transition to relievers much too early, much too often in the recent past. It’s completely smoked the relievers. The problem then compounded: once one reliever, say Chapman, burned out, then Green was leveraged even more, thus amplifying the affects.
I sincerely hope we don’t have that same issue this year by leaning on Holmes & King, who have been outstanding. But, we are fortunate to have SPs that are making quality starts and Boone doesn’t seem so quick to go to the ‘pen.

It’s more Judges health than his production that will help his cause. He’s been the 2nd most productive player (per game) in baseball since 2017.
ohyeadam
So Judge replaces Correa as the Twins high dollar short term impact player next year?
Tml
The Yankees cannot afford to lose Judge. He knows that. Judge is the face of the franchise. He is like the Paul Bunyan of baseball. In this era where offense is on the downturn now two seasons straight or so, the well rounded production Judge provides together with hie leadership. Give him what he wants. I’m guessing he does not want to have to worry about another contract again so maybe 9 years (age 40) and 35 mm a year? $315 mm sounds right. He deserves to be paid close to Trout considering market trends. For now, Trout is the bench mark for long-term contracts. He is wo argument, the best player of his era by far. However, Judge’s play if continued similarly all season just affirms he should be paid like a viable MVP candidate. I do not like it but it is fair for both sides.
StPeteStingRays
It’ll be more like Paul Bunion when he inevitably goes on the IL.
