Luis Castillo will make his season debut on Monday, as the Reds will activate the right-hander from the 10-day injured list to start their game against the Brewers. Castillo suffered soreness in his throwing shoulder during Spring Training, which required an IL visit and a late start to his 2022 campaign.
The former All-Star has allowed only a single earned run over 10 1/3 innings during his minor league rehab assignment, albeit with a troubling eight walks. Nevertheless, the focus on rehab assignments is more health and tune-up work rather than results, and after three rehab outings, Castillo appears to be ready to return to the Show.
Counting Castillo since he has yet to be officially activated, the Reds have a whopping 14 players on the injured list, which has been a big factor in the team’s disastrous start. Even after winning two of three games in their weekend series with the Pirates, Cincinnati has only a 5-23 record.
It is a lot to ask of Castillo to try and turn things around for the Reds by himself, and it remains to be seen if the right-hander will immediately be in good form once he takes the mound. Castillo has traditionally been something of a slow starter, as April and May are his worst months by ERA. If it takes him a while to really get going, it will not only impact whatever tiny chance the Reds have of getting on track, but it would also hamper Castillo’s value as a possible trade chip heading into the deadline. Since Castillo is controlled (via arbitration) through the 2023 season, the Reds should be able to command a nice trade return for Castillo, assuming that he is pitching like his usual self.
Tiger22matt
Hopefully he pitched well and the Reds can get some premium prospects for him and not teams 7 plus best prospects.
Pedro 4 Delino
They’re trading him. The question is this year or next.
Yankee Clipper
Time to trade him now. He keeps going down & his stock lowers. He goes down with anything significant & obviously it disappears.
I am curious what his return would be as it sits. Not too sure teams would be willing to pay anywhere near what the Reds would demand.
Tiger22matt
If that’s the case then keep him this season. No reason to settle for a crappy package like they got for Winker.
braves2
they would have to show he is healthy and can still produce.
Larry Brown's crank
I understand your point, we can’t judge the Seattle trade for about 3 more years.
Tiger22matt
Fraley is trash, Dunn is trash, Williamson is a #3 or 4 starter and the other guys ceiling is a middle reliever that’s a big loss.
Ronk325
The Reds main reason for trading Winker was to dump Suarez. If Williamson winds up being a solid SP for them, the penny pinching Reds will consider that a win
Larry Brown's crank
You should’ve been in the “moneyball” movie. You’re super adept at scouting. Pretty awesome! I mean…not just projections, you can tell what level of starting pitcher said prospect will be. I wish I could do that.
bigredsfan41017
The Reds are known for trading stars for crappy packages ie. this years Seattle trade, the trade that sent Chapman to the Yankees for no body’s then Yankees flipped him to Cubs for 4 or 5 good prospects, the trade of Cueto to the Royals for no one that’s with the organization any longer, pitcher Ilegalis to the Angels for a nobody, Tucker Barnhart trade for a low A prospect and many more I’m afraid to come. #SellTheTeamBob
Tiger22matt
Called a win by who? Reds fans will always call this a loss.
Tiger22matt
You do understand there are several websites that have the scouting reports on these players right. All the websites have Williamson as a #3 or 4 starter and the other player as a middle reliever. But hey I’m sure you are a Mariners fan who is happy to be rid of your garbage.
Larry Brown's crank
Good point! After all…..if its on the internet….must be true!
ksoze
Wow, all the websites! All the websites say you’re a troll. It’s got to be true.
Tiger22matt
Who’s a troll? Because I’m being a realist. The Reds aren’t winning the Mariner trade.
Larry Brown's crank
Dude….point is you DONT know who’s gonna win trades, amazing Kreskin. No matter how much you repeat yourself.
Larry Brown's crank
Lottery numbers please!!♂️

Castillo isn’t getting traded in July. The Reds ownership has caught too much hell from slashing payroll this past off-season, no way they trade him this season. Maybe they should, but they won’t. They may move him this winter, but not in July.
angt222
Yeah if he shows he’s healthy and pitching well, he’s going to be one of the biggest trade chips this July.
Propat
Need to trade him in July if pitching well. Tear it all down trade Mahle and just give away moose if anyone will take him. Minor made no sense and hopefully he can go to.
Dorothy_Mantooth
I really don’t understand them DFA’ing Wade Miley just to turn around and trade for Mike Minor. Sure, Mike Minor only cost them a net $2M after trading Amir Garrett’s $2M salary to the Royals for Minor’s $4M contract but it sure seems like Miley would have given this team much more than Minor would and Miley would be a slam-dunk trade chip in June or July. Plus they lost another trade chip in Garrett as part of this deal.
Much like Minor, Miley ended up on the IL to start the season but he’s out on a rehab assignment now and pitched really well in his first outing (unlike Minor’s 1st AAA rehab assignment). The payroll situation in Cincinnati can’t be that dire where they couldn’t have afforded to keep Miley for a 1/2 season. Miley tends to get better as the season goes on, so he would have 5X the value of Mike Minor at the trade deadline, not to mention that Amir Garrett could have netted them a lottery ticket prospect as well come July. Yet another head-scratcher by the Reds front office.
WHeitzman
Actually Minor make $9 million this year, so they let Miley go to save $10 million, then traded for someone worse for $1 million less. They could have just traded Garrett for a bag of balls and actually saved more money and still have Miley to trade at the deadline if he was healthy
bigredsfan41017
They won’t trade Castillo or Mahle especially with how Hunter Green is pitching so poorly and also they are trying to get fans back in games after Krall and Phil Castellini statement. They are currently under PR damage control.
solaris602
We realize you’re arriving to a ship that’s on red alert with only 5 wins and Joey Votto is statistically the worst hitter in the league, but no pressure. You’ll be fine.
Shaun owens
How many days tell he gets traded away….
ksoze
How many days till the winter meetings? That’s probably when Castillo gets traded. I have a bad feeling they will extend Mahle, when they should have extended Castillo.
Armaments216
If they’re going to trade Castillo or Mahle it’ll be before this year’s trade deadline. They’ll bring the most value with more team control. And there’s absolutely no reason to risk injury just to fill out the 2022 season for a historically bad team.
Can’t see the Reds ownership group committing the money to extend anyone.
WHeitzman
Which is exactly why the Reds would wait to trade them. Don’t underestimate thier incompetence. Go back to 2014, when it was clear the team was in decline. They held onto Cueto, Bruce, Leake, Chapman, and Frazier. Frazier and Cueto they held until after the 2015 All Star Game. They didn’t get much for Frazier, what looked like a good return for Cueto turned out horrible. Chapman proceeded to shoot up his garage the following season and the Reds gave him away for almost nothing. The Yankees of course traded him for Gleyber Torres at the deadline. Bruce was traded for a player known to be injured bat the deadline.
Lyman Bostock
Good breakdown. It’s true, the reds always seem to lose the trades they make. They seem to always make the wrong move at the wrong time. It’s a shame they wasted Votto’s career. Huge fan of his.
Buy yeah they’re pretty bad.
Lyman Bostock
Reminds me of Chris Archer. Except Archer at his best was better than Castillo at his, thus far. If you look at his stats the last three years, they’re all going backwards. I’m curious to see how he fairs in a different scenery, but I’m guessing he completely collapses in 2-3 years. Overall, a disappointment.
