The Red Sox announced a set of roster moves prior to their doubleheader with the Orioles today, and as expected, right-hander Josh Winckowski was added to the roster as the 27th man. Winckowski is slated to make his Major League debut when he starts the second game of the doubleheader. In other moves, Hansel Robles was placed on the 15-day injured list, and Hirokazu Sawamura was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, while right-handers Ryan Brasier and Phillips Valdez were called up from Triple-A.
Robles is battling back spasms and hasn’t pitched since May 22 (his IL placement is retroactive to the 25th). In an inconsistent season for the Red Sox bullpen, Robles has emerged as a closer candidate, recording two saves and recording a 2.65 ERA over 17 innings of work. However, the secondary metrics aren’t impressed with Robles’ work — his strikeout rate is only 16.2%, and Robles has benefited from a .188 BABIP.
Sawamura has a solid 3.60 ERA over 15 innings this year, and his demotion is likely less a reflection of his performance than it is about restocking the bullpen with some fresher arms. After pitching in three of the last four days, Sawamura will likely get a short breather in Triple-A before being called back up to Boston in a few days’ time. Brasier (6.28 ERA) and Valdez (6.10) have each struggled at the big league level this year, and will get another chance to turn things around as the Sox continue to look for reliability late in games.
Yankeesniper
the move the Red Sox should make is to build a replica of the Green Monster outside the stadium to hide that team from view.
Cosmo2
Eh. We’ll give you another shot at that one. The first post on an article about the Red Sox hating on them from a Yankees fan deserves only the best.

Let him do his thing. Give him some good trolling memories. He’ll need something besides championships from before integration to remember when his team collapses at the end of the year. (like they always do)

Hey! 2009 wasn’t all that long ago! It’s been tough being a Yankees fan in the 21st Century. (As that famous Mets fan likes to say “Yeah. That’s a shame.”) LOL!

Lol whatever makes you feel better about the BlowSox being a joke again!

It’s a long season. Might be a little early to gloat but I guess when have only 1 championship in the 21st century I guess you take the little victories.

I hope this guy gets the therapy he needs. I feel bad.

@average wow, Yankees fans don’t like the Red Sox. That’s unheard of, they must need therapy lol. I’m glad you are concerned.

8-2 in the last 10….12-5 since starting 10-19….I think the team has found it’s groove so to speak…Yanks have a MASH unit going on for it’s players, I think they are going to be coming back to Earth….

When will children learn that the opposite of “blow” is “suck”, therefore saying a team “blows” is saying the team doesn’t suck.

Blowsox. Super clever. Rhyming insults are so funny.

The Orioles are still not a good team, but after watching them play the Yankees, I will say they’re a more challenging and competitive team to play than recent editions. They’ve had a difficult schedule to start the year and have played their opponents tough. They’re a team on the rise. Do not assume the win.
Fever Pitch Guy
Last year the O’s were very competitive against the Sox, sweeping them to start the season and taking 2 of 3 to nearly eliminate the Sox the last week of the season.
Teams don’t stay horrible forever.
Flyby
the move the yankees should make is build a hospital outside the stadium so their players have a shorter trip as the injury train starts with them.
Whats that 4 of their top players in the last 4 days? As history has shown, Judge should be joining them soon so that will be pretty their entire offense with stanton there already. Hey you still got Gallo and Hicks though right?
MLB-1971
Yankee fan are single cell organisms. That is why they have no intelligence.
How could you have any and still live in NYC. Lol

Wasn’t Brasier the closer at one point?
fuchholz
Nope, he’s never really been more than a set up guy – at best in high leverage spots.
ellisburks
Only if you are talking about a small window in time in 2019 when he got all of his 7 career saves. Otherwise he’s always been a middle man.
mikedickinson
That bullpen is a dumpster fire.
elmedius
Should’ve optioned Barnes instead of Sawamura. Let the guy figure it out with less pressure… watching him right now is kind of sad. He’s been through too much with the team over the years to fade out like this. Rooting for you Matty!
whyhayzee
What’s weird is that he has moments of success, like tiny islands on a sea of stinkiness.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
They should have optioned Barnes in addition to Sawamura. Neither one of them is in any way dependable
MLB-1971
Barnes has over 5 years of service time, so he can not be unconditionally “optioned”. The CBT has taken away that choice. A DL stint is the more clear choice for Barnes under “shoulder impingement”, so he has a week down time then rehads indefinitely in Worcester, Portland, Greenville, or Salem. (My choice would be a very, very long rehab…..maybe two years). Lol
Yankeesniper
The Red Sox need the likes of Ted Williams on the roster if they ever hope to get ahead of the Yankees.
Boston2AZ
They don’t have to get ahead of the Yankees. They just have to make the playoffs and wait for the Yankees to choke it up in October like always.
whyhayzee
They’re at about mile 7, it’s been mostly downhill so far. Meanwhile the Yankees are sprinting past every water stop so they don’t slow down and the Red Sox are taking walking breaks. We’ll see how it plays out.
pinstripes17
Worry about getting above .500 before you start talking playoffs lmao!
kingbum
@Pinstripes….You should check the standings….Sox are now just 3.5 back of Toronto for that final spot and only the White Sox are in front of us in getting to Toronto. We just got finished beating the brakes off the White Sox they found out. Last 10 games Sox hottest team in the American League, Toronto has been the second hottest just so ya know….

It’s a good thing they announce the WS winner in May. Please let me know when the Yankees next make it to the ALCS let alone The World Series.

Red Sox have been the better team for two decades. Maybe don’t blow your load over 2 good months. If George Steinbrenner were still alive he’d be wearing a Boston hat, cuz that guy loved champions. Its gonna hurt you even more when the Sox grab the final wc spot, and knock you out of playoffs. Again. But hey, you’ll always have April and May of 2022 to hang your hat on. Loser

But then again 85 years as a red sox fan is enough punishment in itself.

I wonder who Judge will be playing for next year as he already turned the NYY down once. They can’t be dumb enough to pay that China doll $350,000,000. He will break into little glass pieces just like a China doll and get a DFA two or three year before his contract ends just like Ellsbury. Lol

Replacing Sawamura with Valdez is ridiculous, but Phillips is one of Cora’s “boys”. And Robles needs to be cut. He won’t, of course. Just saying he should be.
rhswanzey
They’re playing a doubleheader today, and frankly, they’re shuffling deck chairs with the righty relievers. I actually don’t think Cora trusts Valdez much. He doesn’t get hi lev looks even when he is pitching well; on the other hand, he’s been left in a few times over the past season to take an absolute beating – two late outings last year destroyed his ERA. He had his longest look and was trusted most in 2020, when Cora wasn’t here, and when alternative relief choices managed to be even worse than they are now.
JoeBrady

Phillips is one of Cora’s “boys”.
======================
Pssst,, Cora isn’t the GM.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
True, but he’s had an impact on who plays.
JoeBrady
That’s certainly true, but I wanted to bust chops because Miltpappas in implying that Cora favors Latinos. Valdez will get 1-2 meaningless innings before Sawamura returns. I’m waiting for Milt to tell us that Winckowski was promoted because he’s Polish.
whyhayzee
I approve of promoting players because they’re Polish. Y A Z
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – With all due respect, why do you insist on bringing up the race card so often? Nothing Milt wrote had anything to do with race, implied or otherwise. Any manager can have “favorites” without it having to do with a shared race or ethnicity.
Mike Timlin was one of Tito’s “boys”, yet their backgrounds included absolutely nothing in common.
I get it, liberals are required to bring up race all the time. It’s in the DNC handbook. But can we please stick to baseball when there’s no evidence of racism?
Cora is a poor manager for many reasons, none of which have anything to do with race.
JoeBrady
It’s always the same. Anytime a Latino gets promoted, there are 1-2 guys in here that insist that it is always because the player is Latino. If Milt wants to explain that he meant something different, I will be glad to listen.
But there is clearly no other explanation.
And I am not sure what you mean by liberal. I thought it was fairly obvious I am a RW conservative.

They should call up guy’s that are pitching way better than the usual moves like Eduard Bazardo 2.45, Brayan Bello 1.97, Frank German 2.70 or Connor Seabold 2.45 just to name a few & their ERA’s…
all in the suit that you wear
Bello and German were just promoted to Triple A, so I doubt you see them until September if at all. Seabold and Bazardo might be called up, but I could see them getting more innings in Triple A first. They were both up last year.
MLB-1971
Seabold has been hurt a couple times this year already. He probably is not available to promote for a while. The Red Sox will probably promote:
Bello
Seabold
Winckowski (bullpen rather than start)
Crawford
Walter
German (bullpen)
all before the end of the year….
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
They were so elated to receive all these “pitching prospects” in all of these trades… where are they? For god’s sake man we need reinforcements NOW, not later!

================================================
Valdez is on the 40, so it doesn’t require dropping anyone. Seabold is as well, but he is also injured.
MLB-1971
Joe – agreed. Bloom and Cora have stuck to calling up 40-man roster players now, but by August or September the Red Sox will make room by either DFAs or trades, so they can see which of the AAA guys are likely to make the team next year (and help this year).
I wonder if Vazquez gets extended now that his BA is .303 and OPS .766 at least for a year or two. Wong is hitting around .260 with no extra base power. They really have little catching depth anywhere close to the MLB.
JoeBrady
I’d like to see what the trading block looks like. I like Vazquez okay, but i don’t trust players with big contract years. Plus he is already almost 32, and doesn’t look like a gym rat. If he were looking for something like $12M/2, it doesn’t feel like much downside. But he was looking for real money, I’d be looking at someone like Murphy from Oakland. He wouldn’t be cheap, but he has three years left, after this year.
qbass187
I would call how bad the bullpen has been pretty “consistent” with how bad they’ve been for a few years now.
Yankeesniper
I was watching the Red Sox game at Fenway the other day, glad to see red sox fans covering up properly, by putting their masks over their eyes.
BobGibsonFan
Sending down sawamura is something the league needs to address. Expand the rosters to 28 if teams are going to be playing these games with players. If a player is called up, then leave them.up unless they do poorly. Not just because they need fresh arms.
Pedro Martinez’s Mango Tree
His numbers are deceiving. He’s not great with stranding inherited runners

When the bullpen goes wrong, the starter goes long. Thanks, Eovaldi.
JoeBrady
Good game, especially considering we were down 2-0 before the call was overturned. Given Eovaldi’s inconsistency, that could have easily gone wrong. Also the right move by Cora bringing him out for the 9th.
whyhayzee
I think Eovaldi has been mostly solid. A few clunkers but mostly decent outings. He is kind of the staff leader. Set a good example today.
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – That comment about Cora made me laugh really hard, so thank you! Not just because Cora finally realized winning the game is more likely when you leave in the dominant SP instead of automatically going to the pen after 80 pitches, but also because of your constant insistence that no SP should ever face a lineup more than twice.
So facing a lineup more than twice is the right thing to do *only* when Cora decides to do it … love it!
JoeBrady
I don’t recall ever saying you automatically go to the pen after facing the lineup twice. But I will be glad to discuss it if you can show me where I said that.
I have said that, imo, 2-3 inning pitchers represent the future. You get the advantage of guys throwing harder for shorter periods of time, coupled with the fact that you can no longer stack a lineup. You can load your lineup with righties, against a guy like Hill, but then the RS could bring in someone like Houck, and negate that advantage for most of the game.
Having said that, I have never, ever believed in absolutes. Had this been a 3-3 game, I’d have had the BP warmed up as soon as the 6th inning. But once we got to the 9th, there is no question I would trust Eovaldi more than our closers.
RobM
As a Yankee fan, I apologize for the overly obnoxious behavior of one of us up top. Trash talking is fun on both sides of the rivalry, but no need to take over an entire thread.
all in the suit that you wear
Thanks Rob. Agreed.
Yankeesniper
You don’t need to apologize for me. Any true Red Sox fan gets it as does any true Yankee fan. You take it and you give it.
They showed no mercy after last year’s Wild card game and we didn’t deserve any mercy, so don’t go patronizing and sucking up to them now.
I didn’t take over the entire thread, Red Sox fans are not posting because it is not fashionable to be one.
Go to any Red Sox game board and you will see the posting has dropped by at least 2/3. One board I hang around use to see 500 to 600 posts during a game, now they are lucky to break 200. When they start winning again, then the fashion fans will all come back acting as if they never left.,.
JoeBrady
When they start winning again,
===========================
We are winning. 8-10 to be exact.
Beyond that, the RS are more about their “fans” posting when we are losing, and then disappearing when we start winning. You’ll probably notice a certain contingent that haven’t posted recently.
Yankeesniper
not what I see. I am talking about the actual game thread.
Beginning of the year it was bustling with Sox fans.
As the season has progressed the drop-off is plainly obvious.
Dont get me wrong, fashionable Yankee fans do the same thing, just saying.
I am still washing out all the salt Sox fans poured into our wound after beating us in the WC, I do believe sporting the best record in baseball that we should rub it in a little bit now, no?
Good times don’t last forever you know.
Bruin1012
Or you know some of us have lives. That’s something Yankeesniper clearly doesn’t have.

Any time someone posts as often as he did, I usually suspect an altered state of reality.
