Jason Kendall is rejoining the Pirates, as the club is going to be hiring him to a player developmental role, reports Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic. As noted by Biertempfel, the move isn’t technically official yet, with Kendall’s job still not having a title. Semantics aside, the duties will seemingly revolve around working with the club’s minor leaguers. “Put it this way, you’ll see me around,” Kendall says. He later elaborated: “I told the Pirates whatever they want me to do, I’ll do it. I’ll go down and watch minor-league teams and certain players. Catching is what I know, but I also can talk to the kids as someone who’s been there, done that.”
Of course, this is a homecoming for Kendall, 47, as he was drafted by the Pirates in the first round of the 1992 draft and spent the first nine years of his career with the black and yellow. “It just feels like I’m back home,” Kendall said. “This is the team that drafted me. This is the city that watched me grow up through good times and bad times.”
After retiring in 2012, Kendall worked as a special assistant coach with the Royals from 2012 to 2018. In late 2019, he expressed his interest in taking over the vacant manager position in Pittsburgh after the firing of Clint Hurdle. However, that job eventually went to Derek Shelton, who is now in his third season as the Bucs’ skipper.
The Pirates have performed quite poorly since Shelton took over, though that’s no fault of his. The club has been clearly in rebuild mode for quite some time. With the team focused on the future instead of the present, player development will be extremely important for the organization, especially given their low-spending habits. Up until the recent extension of Ke’Bryan Hayes, the club’s largest contract was the $60MM extension given to Kendall himself way back in the year 2000. That means that the work of the team’s player development staff, which now includes Kendall, will be a key factor in the trajectory of the club in the years to come.

Amen, brother. Another “I have to have the first post” wanker. I’d like to see Kendall get a manager gig somewhere. Many catchers excel as coaches and managers.

Maybe when Shelton get canned, Kendall gets the pirates job

Is it not the general conscious that comments like these are stupid and unnecessary?
MortDingle
Private is often better than general…but not here…give me stupid and unnecessary…
kodion
If you feel that way, why compound your mistake with a comment?

As a Yankees fan, you are an idiot
BigFootsFart
Ahhh the typical “rabble rabble rabble I have a micro peen rabble rabble rabble” from a low IQ Yankee fan. Gold star, bigmouthyankeefan.

This has such a “Dewik Jetahh!” tone to it

Honestly I was surprised to see Kendall had a 41 bWAR career. My recollection was that he had a decent but overrated bat. Maybe he’s one of the catchers that got a post career WAR boost when framing came into vogue.
Chicken In Philly?
Decent hitters typically don’t have 2,195 career hits.
Cosmo2
He led off a lot so tons of at bats, stayed almost completely healthy for 15 straight years… not a dynamic prime but a long one… more a cumulative guy than a superstar
jimmyz
Probably barely moves the needle for his career WAR but he always had a decent OBP because he got hit by pitches a lot and drew a good amount of walks. Nothing ever jumped out at you about Kendall’s stats or tools but he was a very consistent all around ballplayer. Shame he was stuck on miserable teams for so long.
bucsfan0004
I was hoping they hired Kendall as a left fielder
Randomuser4567
A guy that plays mostly catcher with 8700 PAs and a 99 career wRC+ is going to have a pretty valuable career unless he’s, “shouldn’t be a catcher”, levels of bad behind the plate.
DarkSide830
The Pirates probably hounded him about him owing them after giving him such a massive contract!

They shouldve hired me I would bring a World Series title to Pittsburgh, not him

Thanks for including a link to Baseball Reference even though he is retired.
Most helpful!

Kendall is gonna be a manager some day. Tough as nails, but after listening to interviews he’s done after he retired, damn is he baseball smart.
YankeesBleacherCreature
One of the best catchers of his time overshadowed by playing in PIT and Piazza and Pudge.
Mikehoncho69
Bucs need to make him manager. Shelton is a joke. I get he has crap players but he’s still a moron
DT.J.B.
I knew him by his reputation but never looked at his obp and walks vs strikeouts. Throw back type numbers.
captainkid
Excellent hire!! Kendall’s got a strong manager pedigree. Bucs are smart to bring him in, as I’m certain he would’ve been on the developmental / special instructor short list for just about every org. Let him rove for a couple years, get attuned to the younger talent…just might make for the next Pirate skipper.
tiredolddude
Kendall played in what we used to consider the modern dark era of Pirates baseball. That was before Nutting, of course. In any case, he often seemed to be the only guy going full blast on some truly rotten teams
The end of his career here and the word that he and Giles were toxic in the clubhouse always was kind of disappointing to me. I get it, one gets sick of losing so often and in such an ugly manner
Hope the years have provided the necessary patience he’s going to need here, whether there is light at the end of the tunnel or as Mendoza says, it’s just an oncoming train
bucketbrew35
One of the best catchers of his generation. He was often overshadowed by the likes of Pudge and Piazza grabbing all of the headlines. Loved watching him play in the 90’s. His ankle injury was beyond brutal.
jimmyz
I was born in Pittsburgh in the mid 80’s so I got a brief taste of good teams with Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke, Drabek, etc then it vanished. Kendall was a joy to watch and a saving grace during some years of misery but I’ll always think of him shredding his ankle on first base running out a grounder immediately whenever I hear his name.
angelsfan4life
Just don’t bring up, him charging the mound against John Lackey
MattyD 2
Damn never realized how good a career he had
Baseball Babe
He was a terrific player. Not particularly a Pirate fan (though I root for small market teams in general) but it’s good for baseball when players like Kendall wind up back in the organization they played for.
Monkey’s Uncle
He really did have an excellent career. I think a lot of people don’t realize how good his prime year offensive numbers were, maybe because he wasn’t a home run hitter. Of course it didn’t help that he played in a small market on mostly terrible teams either. Kendall was no slouch defensively, and was an excellent base runner (not “for a catcher”, just an excellent base runner). And you knew he was going 100% all of the time. It really was a joy to watch him play growing up.
Yanks4life22
I remember him being a tough out. You would get to two strikes and that’s when he went to work and would start wearing pitchers down fouling pitch after pitch barely striking out. It’s like he wanted you to get to two strikes just to tire you out.
Yanks4life22
Am I crazy to think the Pirates really could be a premier franchise if they had an owner who spent? That stadium rocks when they are good and the Pittsburgh fan base are already diehard fanatics who spend money and are looking for something between hockey and football season. I went to a game there in 2015 (funny it was Geritt Cole pitching) and had a great time there. Really think they could be a consistent contender if they tried.
Randomuser4567
Yes. We’ve seen plenty of examples to know that spending doesn’t necessarily translate to more winning. Also, no matter how much they spend, Pittsburgh is still not a huge market.
tiredolddude
The large market/small market theme wouldn’t have anything to do with Yanks’ comment were it not for MLB’s financial set-up. It’s quite literally unique to all professional sports and it dooms “small market” teams to mediocrity, at best, for protracted periods.
Everything Yanks wrote is true. But at the end of the day, his is only a common sense, fan’s take. If baseball and in particular, owners don’t care, this will be the way things go for years to come
bucketbrew35
According to baseball reference’s HOF calculators his bat was actually HOF level for a Catcher.
Cosmo2
Probably says more about those calculations than it does his career
joew
one of the best catchers of the time.
He is a great choice to help out younger players. I wouldn’t mind seeing him be the new MLB coach. Really no pressure right now, would be a nice time to get his feet wet.
Hes a guy like Cutch, doesn’t matter where he goes, he is a pirate
mario crosby
Meet the next manager of the Pirates, Jason Kendall.
DonB34
I have a co-worker that says Jason Kendall should be in the Hall of Fame. It’s actually an interesting argument that I never knew should exist.
If you go by JAWS, #1 through #11 are Hall of Famers.
#12 is Thurman Munson, who many argue should be in the Hall.
#13 is Gene Tennace (WHAMMY!).
#14 is Buster Posey….. future Hall of Famer.
#15 is Buck Ewing… Hall of Famer.
#16 is Bill Freehan…. not a Hall of Famer, but an 11 time all-star.
#17 is Roy Campanella… Hall of Famer.
#18 is Wally Schang. His career started in 1913. I know nothing about him. Not in the Hall.
#19 is Jorge Posada. Not a Hall of Famer, and shouldn’t be.
#20 is Roger Bresnahan. Hall of Famer.
Then #21 is Jason Kendall.
#22 is Yadier Molina….. future Hall of Famer.
So Jason Kendall is mostly surrounded by Hall of Famers according to JAWS. According to WAR he is #22, with all the guys I mentioned being above him. So he’s basically right at the cut off line for current Hall of Famers by both measures.
Someone above mentioned that he was a compiler, and that’s why he has 2195 hits, but he really wasn’t. He only played until age 35. He missed half a season with the brutal ankle injury in 1999. His 2195 hits are 4th most for a catcher, with only Ivan Rodriguez, Ted Simmons, Carlton Fisk above him.
He’s 9th all-time in doubles for catchers. 9th all time in runs scored for catchers, while playing for awful Pirates teams (only Hall of Famers above him). 189 stolen bases as a catcher, which for the modern era is unheard of. Fisk is 70 stolen bases behind him and the closest guy since like the early 1900s. He hit over .300 six times.
He also is 5th all-time for career hit by pitch – 254 times hit by a pitch. Wasn’t afraid to hug the plate and take one for the team.
Cosmo2
First of all, what you described is EXACTLY a “compiler”… healthy for fifteen seasons, never had a truly dynamic season… a great career but not a HOF career. The fact that judging him against other catchers according to JAWS puts him so close merely shows that the methodology used is flawed. If Kendall is in the HOF, put his plaque next to Baines’s and then bulldoze the whole thing cuz it’s meaningless.
jimmyz
Moot point. He’s been off the ballot for years and any sort of veterans committee is going to have plenty of more deserving players to choose. Kendall certainly has a spot in the mythical “hall of very good” though.
jimmyz
This is a great hire, particularly since the organization added catching prospects Henry Davis, Endy Rodriguez, Abraham Gutierrez and Carter Bins in the last two years. Really hope he makes a strong impact in their development specifically Davis and Rodriguez.
