The Phillies announced that shortstop Didi Gregorius has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 5. Gregorius is dealing with a left knee sprain. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by Bryson Stott, who has been called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
While Gregorius’ .288/.338/.356 slash line over 65 plate appearances isn’t anything overwhelming, it does count as above-average production (102 wRC+, 105 OPS+) within an offensively-challenged 2022 season. At the very least, it does represent a step up from Gregorius’ disappointing numbers over his first season in Philadelphia, and that lack of performance left Gregorius’ starting status very much in question heading into this year.
Stott even broke camp with the Phillies out of Spring Training, a sign that the club was ready and willing to let the former first-rounder usurp Gregorius’ starting shortstop job entirely. However, Stott hit only .133/.161/.167 over his first 31 PA in the majors, and he was sent back to Triple-A for some more seasoning.
The top prospect seems to have gotten on track in the minors, as Stott has a .986 OPS over his 40 PA at the Triple-A level. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Stott will just slide right into regular duty with Gregorius out, as utilityman Johan Camargo is on hand for at least a timeshare and perhaps even the bulk of starting assignments at shortstop.

The Phillies need some improvement on defense in the outfield.
Duvall is available!
VonPurpleHayes
The Phillies don’t have 1 weakness, and in this deadball era, their explosive offense has been extremely inconsistent.
tstats
If the MLB hadn’t screwed the pooch with this ball would the Phillies be in first?
VonPurpleHayes
No way. Sorry definitely don’t mean to imply that at all.
Joe says...
Phillies fans, has Didi been better this year?
DarkSide830
certainly better than last year on both sides of the ball.
cpdpoet
Didi has been much better than last year.
Due to his injuries, he was brutal to watch. At least now he’s replacement level. Hopefully he can be moved to a team where there are no expectations for a low level rp and Stott can be inserted at the 7/8 hole….
I feel Girardi is losing his grip on the team….
VonPurpleHayes
I didn’t expect the Phillies to win the division or anything, but this season has been horrific and it’s never been more painful to root for this team.
You Can Put It In The Books
You can say that again. Woof.
SportsFan0000
It is way too early to count any team out.
The Braves played just .500 ball for more than half of last season and won the WS.
The Phillies or any other team starting slowly can get hot, make the playoffs
and become a serious World Series contender.
Phillies should make some trade moves to shore up CF and defense
Pitching staff could also use some reinforcements especially in the bullpen.
VonPurpleHayes
It’s not necessarily about counting them out and the thing is, it’s not really the defense that’s the issue. That’s the problem on paper, but watching these games, the offense struggles to score 1 night while the pitching does amazing. The next night the offense ranks and they can’t pitch. This team has had 2 historic losses already. They just keep finding ways to lose and are on pace for 70 wins…laughable. Girardi cost them 2 games this year, and honestly 2 in a season is too much for a manager.
TradeAcuna
The Braves also won more than 1 series at this point last year
This year, the Braves have only won series so far. Their offense is bad…it is not a dry spell…they are bad.
In other words, the Braves are worse this season. Last year is last year.

VonPurpleHayes……..
” it’s never been more painful to root for this team.”…..you must be young enough to not have been around for the 1961 season (my first year as a Phillies Phan) of 107 loses or the team of the late 60’s very early 70’s. Those were some rough times.
VonPurpleHayes
Yes before my time, but I have seen far worse teams than the 2022 team, but those teams had low expectations. The Phillies surpassed the luxury tax for the first time in history. Their offense was predicted to be elite. This team is supposed to be decent and it’s awful for a variety of different reasons including the inconsistent offense. It’s the expectations and the crushing losses that make this season tougher than some of those dreadful Phillies years.
cpdpoet
The 88-92 Phillies and Nick Leyva enters the chat, my post HS years….
VonPurpleHayes
Those I was around for, but again, expectations and team salary were low. This Phillies team was expected to compete. They are somehow worse than last year.
Itrainsontuesday
Didi’s first season here was ok, it was last year he struggled.

Let Stott play

SportsFan0000
The Phillies and Girardi need to let Stott start @ SS and get plenty of ABs to establish himself as a major league regular.
Then, the Phillies should work on getting a “gold glove” CF who can hit and improve their defense up the middle.
Brian Reynolds? (Pirates)
Cedrick Mullins? (Orioles)
Or someone else not on the trade radar yet that can lock up CF on both sides of the ball.
VonPurpleHayes
The Phillies desperately need offense. Stott has shown he can’t hit major league pitching. If he does it this time around, great. If not,I’d rather him get consistent ABs in the minors.
miggy4prez
Did you just mansplain who Brian Reynolds and Cedric Mullins are to the MLBTR comment section?
SportsFan0000
Just stating the facts. Someone needs more coffee and is extra grumpy today.
justdadamaja
everyone clowns the mets for the kelenic/diaz trade but….
the JP Crawford for Jean Segura trade looks 100x worse right now…
Phils have no SS, no SS prospects and JP is on of MLB’s best SS and is still just 26.
SportsFan0000
That underscores my point that the Phils must play Stott and others to find out what they have @ the MLB level for the long term and to contend now and in the future.
Trade Segura and/or Gregorius to fill holes in CF and elsewhere.
If Gerardi cannot develop young players @ the MLB level, then maybe the Phillies is not the right job for him?! In order for young players to develop, then you must play them…not shuffle them all over the field and use them all as “utility players”.
Hard enough getting a young player’s bat going on offense in MLB then to put added pressure on them to cover multiple major league positions.
VonPurpleHayes
They have Stott. I’m confused by what you mean.
DarkSide830
Didi IS a SS and Stott WILL be the guy starting next season. but who cares about facts?
SportsFan0000
If Didi keeps playing well, then they could flip him @ the Deadline or sooner for CF and more pitching help.
Salary relief would be nice too even if they pay 25%-50% of Didi’s remaining salary this year.
Must be patient with Stott.
Give him the SS job for a few months at least at let him learn the league, relax and start to hit.
VonPurpleHayes
Yea. Stott is the future. Didi is now. Phillies are fine at SS. Not really sure what justdad was talking about.
TradeAcuna
On the bright spot, at least the Phillies are not paying 300 mill+ on an overrated SS – Lindor.
Black Ace57
The bigger issue than that is the fact if the kept JP Crawford I doubt he ends up like this. They have really managed to screw up the development of almost every prospect outside Hoskins and Nola.
VonPurpleHayes
Bingo.
philliesphan77
Yeah there’s gotta be something in the water here that ruins baseball players
cpdpoet
Crawford was a classic change of scenery guy….His progress stalled and hit attitude drooped. I was glad he got moved and is succeeding. It probably would not have happened in Philly…
As for the return, Segura has posted solid stats, but HIS typical laziness, cost “Cutch a ton of $ and further success….lest we not forget him running out a play….
longines64
Your Philadelphia Phillies, where .280 hitters are transformed into .230 hitters.
SportsFan0000
Lots of teams are off to slow starts.
And, other teams now at the top won’t be there when the dust clears.
VonPurpleHayes
Deadball era really screwed teams who invested in offense. To be fair, the Phillies are a mess everywhere.
You Can Put It In The Books
Power may be down, but working deep counts and pressuring the defense by putting the ball on play are both up.
miggy4prez
It is way too soon and pretty inaccurate to call the present a deadball era. The deadball era is already a thing. Maybe (Man)Fredball era
VonPurpleHayes
The fact that baseballs are Inconsistent year to year is ridiculous. But yes, your description is more accurate.
cpdpoet
@longines64
Uhhh, Phillies are 7th in the league in hitting…..but nice attempt at a hot take, I guess?
SportsFan0000
The season is very young. The lockout set many players back in their preparation for the long season and has lead to many extra pitching injuries.
The Phillies will be in the hunt by or after the All Star break when it is “crunch timezz”
The Phillies just have too much talent and are playing below expectation levels as a team.
I doubt the Mets will run away with the Division.
They are in it all year and will come back to the pack.
Division should be a “dogfight” all year.
VonPurpleHayes
I don’t see it. It’s getting late early for the Phillies, and they’ve shown deficiencies in every area. Of course the Mets will slump at some point, but I think it’ll be too late for the Phils who just don’t have it. I don’t see how you can recover from that 7-1 9th inning loss. The Mets are a good team and I give them credit, but that was much more of a Phillies loss than a Mets win. They’ve gift wrapped a few wins for teams. Sometimes it’s Girardi. Sometimes it’s the offense. Sometimes it’s the bullpen. Sometimes it’s the defense. Sometimes it’s the starting pitching. I don’t know what exactly is wrong with this team, but it’s more than one thing. One or two things will eventually click, but all of them? Seems unlikely.

If this continues for the Phillies, then I would expect one or more of Dave Dombrowksi’s
signature “blockbuster” trades that shake up this team, its chemistry, its performance etc.
I could see them making a play for CF Cedrick Mullins or Bryan Reynolds or another, younger, under the radar guy.
I could see Didi being dealt in a separate deal.
I could even see Jean Segura dealt and turn the middle infield over
to younger, more exciting, dynamic players like Stott and others.
