The Mets have claimed infielder Gosuke Katoh off waivers from the Blue Jays, according to an announcement from Toronto. The Mets had a vacancy on the 40-man roster and immediately optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.
Katoh, 27, signed a minor league deal with the Jays over the offseason. A nine-year minor league veteran, he got his first big league opportunity when Toronto selected him to break camp with the MLB club. That proved a brief stay, as Katoh was optioned to Triple-A before appearing in a game. He was quickly recalled thereafter and got into his first eight contents, collecting a double and three walks with just one strikeout in 11 plate appearances.
The Jays designated Katoh for assignment on Wednesday when the need for another pitcher arose. They’ll lose him to the Mets, who add a versatile defender with a solid Triple-A track record to the organization. The left-handed hitting Katoh has a .292/.383/.457 line in a bit more than 700 career Triple-A plate appearances. He’s walked in a robust 12.3% of his trips to the dish at the top rung of the minor league ladder.

I hate this, he was such a cool dude.
LFGMets (Metsin7)
Why did the bluejays DA him? I know he only has like 11 at bats and his average is low (small sample size) but he has a obp of .400

40 man crunch, same reason the Pads let him go. Hopefully Kosuke becomes a star in NY! Good dude to root for

WTH?! Why would the Jays give up on him so quickly? Sure, his BA was below the Mendoza Line, but the guy had more walks than strikeouts.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, I’m really confused by this too. When you look at his stat line over the 700PAs in the minors, it’s really solid. You’d think that would be a player to give solid playing time. I’ve seen guys with much less production given much, much more opportunity to succeed. Interesting move.
I hope you’re doing well, Dunedin. Jays look great this year despite the (somewhat) slow start.

A tip of the hat to you, kind sir.

Depth. Mets pretty barren @ AAA. And Reds claimed Matt Reynolds a week or so ago
DarkSide830
hillarious if you thini about it that they claimed Reynolds but said no to Katoh.

Possible Guillorme 2.0, or does either Katoh or Guillorme have one or more significantly better developed skills than the other?
mookiesboy
Guillorme is a major leaguer He’s young and cheap Mets don’t need a 2.0. They do need another RP with that last spot on the 40 though so I was surprised by this move
Chris G.
Sean Reid-Foley will most likely be getting moved to the 60-Day IL which will open up another spot on the 40-man.

Trevor May and Jacob deGrom could go on the 60-day also since it’s unlikely either will make it back before 60 days after being placed on the IL.

Yeah, seems redundant to me but worth doing for the Mets with an eye toward possibly sneaking Katoh through waivers on an outright assignment when they need that 40-man roster spot again.
Yankee Clipper
“ possibly sneaking Katoh through waivers on an outright assignment”
I don’t see this happening, here’s why: too many tanking teams waiting to scoop up talent that are already into their depth, ie, O’s, Pirates, etc… it’s their daily goal.
phenomenalajs
Yes and it’s not necessary with several candidates for the 60-day.
Cosmo2
Guillorme is better at getting on base, Kato is faster (Guillorme comes out on top there), I don’t know about Kato’s glove but I’m guessing Guillorme is better. Most importantly, Guillorme has played well in the majors. Kato is already 27 and hasn’t yet. (And if spellcheck changes “Kato” to “Kati” one more time I’m gonna freak out.)
whyhayzee
He will lay down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that will cap an 18 run rally in the bottom of the 24th inning of the 7th game of the World Series and become a Mets legend forever. Indeed.

More likely DFA in a week
flyingblindsquirrel
Yeah, but definitely 1 or the other.
johns-11
How dare the Mets steal Katoh! Slime bags like both NY teams. I can’t wait until he goes on waivers again.
C Yards Jeff
Buck Ball. He’ll use this guy when needed and with results.
Bill M
I’m guessing Kevin Boles will be using this guy quite a bit more than Buck.
