May 8: The Mariners have announced the selection of Kirby’s contract, with right-hander Riley O’Brien being optioned to create space on the active roster. To make room on the 40-man, Ken Giles was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Giles has been working his way back from October 2020 Tommy John surgery. Although it was initially hoped he would be ready for Opening Day, a strained tendon in his right middle finger set Giles back significantly during Spring Training. Based on this IL placement, it seems the club isn’t expected him to join the big league club until mid-June at the earliest.
May 7, 3:25PM: Kirby will start Sunday’s game against the Rays, according to MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo (Twitter link).
12:54PM: The Mariners are calling up George Kirby, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN (Twitter link). Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com tweeted earlier this afternoon that Kirby had been scratched from his scheduled start with Double-A Arkansas.
Whenever Kirby first takes the ball, he’ll be making his major league debut. The 20th overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Elon University, the right-hander quickly blossomed into one of the game’s top young arms. Regarded as a polished strike-thrower with solid but not elite stuff and as an amateur prospect, Kirby has taken his raw stuff to new heights as a professional. After working with a 91-95 MPH fastball in college, he’s pushed that velocity to the 95-99 MPH range in the minors.
That improved arm speed hasn’t come at the expense of the New York native’s pristine control. Baseball America, FanGraphs and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN all credited Kirby with possible plus-plus command (a 70 grade on the 20-80 scouting scale) over this past offseason. He’s among the best locaters in the minor leagues, and his combination of velocity and feel for pitching made him one of the sport’s most highly-regarded prospects.
BA, FanGraphs, ESPN and Keith Law of the Athletic all slotted Kirby among the game’s top 50 overall prospects heading into the season. Baseball America was the most bullish of the group, ranking him 12th overall and the #3 pitcher. Evaluators were a bit divided about the quality of his secondary offerings; most suggested each of his slider, curveball and changeup were around average, but BA graded his upper-80s slider as a plus pitch. Not coincidentally, BA suggested he could have top-of-the-rotation upside, while each of FanGraphs, ESPN, and The Athletic pegged him as more of a mid-rotation type.
Between the canceled 2020 minor league season and some missed time last year due to shoulder soreness, Kirby only has 115 1/3 pro innings under his belt. He has shined in that time, though, with the results to match the strong visual evaluations. Kirby owns an ERA between 2.30 and 2.40 at all three of his stops, including a 2.31 mark over 50 2/3 Double-A innings. He has punched out a strong 29.6% of batters faced at that level against a tiny 5.9% walk rate.
Kirby will take the rotation spot of another top prospect. Matt Brash was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma and converted to relief (at least temporarily) after struggling to throw strikes over his first five MLB starts. Kirby doesn’t figure to have the same control problems out of the gate, but Brash’s initial difficulties are a reminder that even elite prospects often scuffle in their first taste of the big leagues. There’s uncertainty with any rookie, and Kirby is headed to the majors without so much as a single Triple-A inning under his belt.
Still, the Mariners wouldn’t have turned to Kirby if they weren’t bullish on his chances of being immediately effective. Seattle is off to a disappointing 12-15 start, but they’re seeking to contend for a playoff spot this season. If Kirby can solidify the back end of the rotation right out of the gate, that’d go a long way towards hanging around in the American League. The M’s rotation has been a mixed bag in the early going. Logan Gilbert has been excellent. Chris Flexen has been effective, while Marco Gonzales and offseason signee Robbie Ray have underwhelmed. The latter two players had a lot of pre-2022 success, though, giving the M’s reason to anticipate better results over the coming months.
Enough time has passed that Kirby won’t reach a full year of service in 2022 even if his promotion proves permanent, positioning him to reach free agency after the 2028 campaign at the earliest. If he sticks in the majors from here on out, he’d be a virtual lock to reach arbitration heading into 2025 as a Super Two qualifier. Future optional assignments could impact that service trajectory, of course. Kirby is not yet on the 40-man roster, so the Mariners will need to make another move to accommodate his official selection.

Mariners always rushing guys to the majors
ryrockak
I said this earlier on another site. Hopefully they don’t ruin him like they did with Ackley and Green. You can even say they kind of ruined Zunino top imo

Right… or, none of those guys were ever really that good.

Who is “Green?”
SodoMojo90
Green?
Brandon1194
he was drafted 3 years ago out of college doesn’t seem rushed to me
syndergaardshair
He hasn’t pitched in AAA yet, at least get his feet wet facing AAA guys before making the jump to MLB
ayrbhoy
Re: facing AAA hitters. He didn’t need to – he faced and performed well against MLB hitters in Spring Training when he battled Matt Brash for the 5th spot in the rotation. Besides he had 3 years college and 3 years pro ball experience AND more importantly- feedback from the analytics dept in a Front Office that has become VERY good at identifying and developing pitching talent.
Btw: speaking of Dipoto’s FO using analytics to improve their ball-club. Dipoto came to the Mariners because his previous employer would not let him use analytics to improve their team. That fact still blows me away to this day.
Jarred Kelenic's Beer Can
Kirby pitched well yesterday. 6 shutout innings and 7 Ks in his debut against a Rays lineup that’s built to contend. He proved he didn’t need “to get his feet wet” in AAA.
ayrbhoy
M’s always rushing guys to the majors? That couldn’t be further from the truth. The M’s drafted College Pitchers with their 1st pick for 3 straight drafts 2018-2020 so they would be more prepared for this rebuild window. ‘We’ drafted Gilbert, Kirby then Emerson Hancock.
Look at all of the prospects this particular Mariners regime has brought up to the ML’s in 2-3 yrs and tell us who looks “rushed?” K Lewis, JP Crawford, E Swanson, L Gilbert, Sheffield, Munoz, Penn Murfee, Misciewicz, etc. they have all had plenty of time in the Minors. Just because Kelenic has struggled in his first 120 ML games doesn’t mean he was rushed- Don’t confuse a prospects struggle to adjust to the Majors as being ill prepared or rushed. It’s just an incredibly difficult game to break into. This regime is more thorough and prepared than any FO we’ve had in 2 decades.
Re: Kirby he was in his 3rd year in Pro ball after 3 years in College. He had a microscopic 1.82 ERA in 5 starts after ‘losing’ a Spring Training battle for the 5th spot in the rotation to Matt Brash. He had a Minor League career ERA of 2.34 w 137 K/outs over 115 ip. He was absolutely READY for a ML debut. Turns out he did something that no Mariners pitching prospect has ever done- pitched 6 scoreless inn on their ML debut.
Pedro 4 Delino
He should do okay in his debut.
MLB has messed with the balls so much that announcers keep mentioning it.
Dead ball era 2.0
kripes-brewers
I’m not a conspiracy theorist typically, but if you happened to see the last Brewers/Reds series, I wouldn’t be surprised if a batch of live balls were used. Absolutely crazy turnaround for a sluggish offense to just start mashing like that. A few guys getting hot at the same time, sure, but both teams were crushing it
Pedro 4 Delino
I’m not surprised. MLB admits to changing baseball’s mid-season. It’s probably why they bought Rawlings. I’m hearing announcers talk about it openly on a few different broadcasts.

It’s possible. But if you check ESPN’s park factors, Milwaukee’s Miller Park leads in home runs by a lot.

That’s based on this years tendencies…

Have the M’s had a highly touted prospect come to the big leagues and immediately rake since Griffey and A-Rod?
dshires4
Be kinda hard for Kirby to rake as a starting pitcher.
baines03
Have they had a prospect rake like a HOFer? No. They did have the rookie of the year two years ago so there’s that… and Kirby is a pitcher so he won’t be raking either way.
mlb1225
Ichiro did pretty darn good in 2001.

true, with a big asterisk because it’s not like japanese league is low minors or college (also age 27 season when he debuted).

Whatever word King Felix would like, it’s not “rake.”
tstats
ARod didn’t take immediately
Dunk Dunkington
A-rod even struggled in his first call up. Not easy playing this game
Sunday Lasagna
Kelenic could. I’ve seen his videos, he has a perfect swing, absolutely rockets the ball off the tee. The problem is pitchers keep throwing him breaking stuff to locations he doesn’t handle well. We just need a new rule. Minimum amount of fastballs to any batter = 75% . That way it would possibly take 12 pitches to strike Jarred out and he would have 9 fastballs to get a hold of.
ayrbhoy
Msfan- the year Arod made his debut the MLB BA was .267 and FB velo avg was 89 mph. Today MLB BA is .232 and the avg FB velo is up to 93.6 mph. As of today 40 pitchers currently have FB velo averages at 95 mph or higher. It’s a completely different age. Prospects no longer immediately “rake” upon their debuts. Julio is the closest thing to The Kid and Arod. He’s 21!!!

Dipoto’s Mariners never learn..
Rush ’em up there and watch ’em get a trauma.
I was so hoping this would be a breakout year for the M’s.

He’s 24.. Would you rather have him up when he’s 30?
Fred Park
@Larry, It depends on the man, doesn’t it?
King Felix (Larry Bernandez) came up at age 19 and prospered just fine.
I was just trying to stir up some conversation with my comment, but I guess everyone’s still asleep.
Larry Bernandez 1324IM
Haha absolutely. Gotta love the King.

@painter, I guess it is kinda funny.
And then you can’t talk about pitchers and hitters in the same conversation either.
Edgar Martinez didn’t come up until he was 27, and he still went on to become a legend.
So go figure.

Fred, I’d say you were trying to stir up something with your comment, but I don’t think it was conversation.

I heartily endorse bringing up the youngsters. – S. Boras
Larry Bernandez 1324IM
Let’s go!!!!! Congrats Mariners
Dorothy_Mantooth
There’s no issue with bringing young talent up early. If they are brought up and do well then the team reaps the benefits of drafting a talented player who developed quickly in their system. If the kid struggles in the majors and gets sent back down, he has a blueprint of what he needs to work on in order to get back to the majors. I feel that most teams wait too long to give their kids a shot at the majors; bring them up and let them learn against the best players in the world.
radhippo
24 years old is not too young. Juan Soto is 23 and seems like he’s a 10 year vet.
LordD99
Age is not the question. Few players are Juan Soto.
It’ll be an interesting test. I was criticized when I said in Spring Training that Marsh likely wasn’t ready. Kirby probably isn’t either me but his command is better. They both should be good MLB pitchers in time.
LordD99
*Brash*.
differentbears
Julio Urias is in his 7th season somehow, and he’s currently 25.
24 is nowhere near too soon to get a look at a pitcher. I’m eager to see how Kirby does, he is jumping from AA to MLB.
Mystery Team
Are you sure Juan Soto is 23? He looks more like 30ish to me. Hell Miguel Sano is supposedly only 28 but he looks all of 40. Let’s not forget good OLD Albert Pujols either. Still playing at the ripe old age of 56.
Joe It All
Some people just look older but I get what you’re trying to say. When Greg Oden got drafted to the NBA he looked like he was 19 going on 45.
compassrose
Bringing him up early or let him get a taste of the majors then when teams figure him out send him down. Easy to tell a guy what he is doing wrong need to work on or learn it by doing. They did this with Brash everyone thinks he is a lost cause because he struggled. If he is tough enough he will learn if he is too soft would not have made it anyway.
Fred Park the Angels fan is feeling it. We just had a tough road trip and now the Angels are on top. Good for you when a pitcher gets hurt what are you going to do trade away prospects you don’t have and can’t afford to trade for long term success?
Ms Fan you can’t pull 2 guys out and compare them to everyone else. 1 is a HOFer the other would have been if he could keep the needle out of his butt or rubs whatever he used probably all. Lewis did well when he played but the last two joke of GMs we had and the guy that emptied the minors to win now didn’t leave anything there. To answer your question though Adam Jones did very well. I am sure there are others but that was quick of the top of my head. Probably because it was so painful.
dshires4
I don’t know a single person that believes Brash is a lost cause after 5 starts.

“solid but not elite stuff”
Don’t know what evaluations you’ve been reading?
Most things I’ve read about Kirby’s stuff:
-dominates the strike zone
-Ace stuff
-Someone to lead a rotation
Doesn’t give up hardly any HRs
Alot of K’s
Minimal walks
Makes even worse for hitter when he can do that with a fast ball in the mid/upper 90s
Ace stuff from the get go? Probably not.
Mystery Team
I know right. Kirby looks like the future ace of this staff and every single evaluation I’ve read is the same as what you just stated. He’s done nothing but dominate at every level with a high 90s fastball that he controls better than every other minor league pitcher. If he’s not an elite pitching prospect than there are no elite pitching prospects.
dshires4
That’s because the guy above you was literally quoting the AMATEUR scouting report…
User 2079935927
Dipoto tinkers with the roster way too much. He needs to let the guys settle down and let them find their groove.
I believe the run they went on late last year gave the front office the idea they were 1 or 2 players away from being contenders for the AL West Crown. Then Dipoto overhauls the roster. The team has no continuity they can’t jell. Maybe they will catch the Angels
Jarred Kelenic's Beer Can
They had to replace a retiring Seager at 3B, add a proven starter, add a big bat LF/DH, and needed a proven everyday 2B. They had a lot of holes to fill and Dipoto filled them without blowing up the core. It wasn’t an overhaul, he essentially replaced 4 spots on the active roster. The 2021 team wasn’t a 90-win team because of their talent (their offense was near the bottom of the league), they won 90 games because of an insane amount of good luck in the clutch and a dominant bullpen. It’s still early, and the Mariners have been snakebitten with injuries. They were below .500 in May of last year too, but then they turned it around.
Plugnplay
Every non-homer knew last year’s M’s 90 win team was a mirage. There is a huge luck factor when it comes to winning 1 run games, and they won a ton of them.
Some good and bad news for you thou. This 2022 team is a little better than last year’s, but won’t win 90 games.
YaGottaBelieve
Too much rushing young players from Double A to majors without major Triple A seasoning first. Haven’t they learned from the rush jobs on White, Raleigh, JK and Julio? I get wanting to win, but at what cost to their development?
differentbears
They might not want to subject him to the hitter-friendly PCL when the second deadball era of MLB is in full swing.
holecamels35
It hasn’t really worked for the M’s but I still stick by this approach. Low minors is where top talent is, AAA is mostly washouts and career minor league talent, really don’t need to play there at all if you’re a top prospect let alone full seasons.
Slothcliff Hokum
Probably yes on rushing White, Raleigh, and Kelenic, but I think it’s not quite fair to say they have rushed Julio. His overall numbers are low,but over his last 10 games he is 11 for 35 with a couple of walks. Sure, that is a small sample size, and it does include 10 strikeouts… but he is showing rapid overall improvement over the past couple of weeks. He is a fast learner, and I imagine he will continue to improve enough to be in the discussion for ROY. The others you mentioned will also improve, but probably not as quickly.
NWMarinerHawk
I am so annoyed that we get a guy with the last name Kirby years after Nintendo cut bait.
Think of the promotional possibilities….
chrisjaybecker
At least his name isn’t Q-bert. That would suck.
Gwynning
Ms. Pacman would be even worse
seamaholic 2
Unlike Brash, this kid is the real deal. Nasty, nasty stuff.
HeedFrodo
Brash is very good. Amazing slider and exploding fastball. Will be a great bullpen guy. Which is why they sent him down. Your comment is terrible.
seamaholic 2
We’ll see, but what he has now won’t get major league hitters out. The slider is amazing … but it’s never in the strike zone and looks like the kind of shape that never will be. Major league hitters figure that out very fast and spit on it. He needs another pitch, stat.
NWMarinerHawk
Brash has some of the nastiest stuff in baseball, there is a reason he has received the hype that he has. He’s only 23. Sheesh. This is baseball. Don’t judge the kid on 4 starts
Jarred Kelenic's Beer Can
His stuff is wicked, he just has no idea where it’s going. Definitely a real life Nuke Laloosh.
48-team MLB
This kid really brought the hammer in Super Smash Bros.
Mystery Team
So many on here crying about it being too early to call up Kirby are probably the same ones crying that Kelenic was being held down to manipulate his service time. You can’t have it both ways you either give the young guys a shot or you don’t. They could be the Yankees or Red Sox and wait until their prospects are 25 and 26 to give them realistic chances.
Painful itch
MTeam, yes they can and they do. Drives me nuts also. Look they have played some very good teams and with all the hype, youth, injuries……..
Ray and Gonzo struggled, bullpen blah, hitting spotty. An honest fellow would say their record is exactly what it should be today. Winning Team is a work in progress. They will get there. Lots of talent
NWMarinerHawk
Everybody needs to calm down about the M’s. The peripheral stats are there offensively, and we haven’t had Mitch or KLew all year. Toughest schedule in baseball this far. Everything is fine. Get back to me at the All Star break

I’ll take the M’s bullpen against any bullpen in baseball. Munoz, SEAWALL, Diego, Swanson. These guys are nasty. Currently the ms are 14th in bullpen runs allowed. covers.com/sport/baseball/mlb/statistics/team-bull…
Please get back to me at the all star break. Ken Giles is set to begin his rehab assignment soon. Don’t sleep on Drew Steckenrider or his 2.00 era from last year either

And Kirby was awesome….
NWMarinerHawk
Looked a lot like “slightly not as good stuff” Degrom. Goes right after guys all up in the zone with plus power pitches.
