The Giants have reinstated first baseman Brandon Belt and right-hander Dominic Leone from the COVID-related injured list. Infielder Jason Vosler and righty Sean Hjelle were optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding roster moves.
Belt and Leone return after positive COVID-19 tests sidelined the duo on April 29. Both were off to strong starts — Belt hit .242/.367/.470 with four home runs over his first 79 plate appearances, while Leone had a 2.57 ERA over his first eight innings out of the Giants bullpen.
With Belt moving back to his customary first base spot, Wilmer Flores (who had been filling in at first base) is likely to slide across the diamond and take over at third now that Vosler is back in Triple-A. Evan Longoria has yet to play this season due to finger surgery, but the veteran is on a minor league rehab assignment and could be close to his 2022 debut.

LOSER! LOL!

Hjelle pitched a clean inning in his debut. My guess is they wanted to give him a taste of the big league atmosphere.
Giants are getting closer to having all their projected regulars back. They are still missing Longeria and LaStella but they should be back soon. They have scuffled recently but still are playing close to their NL west rivals .

If Cobb or DeScafani go on IL again hopefully Giants will give Hjelle a longer look.

What this Giants team is doing is nothing short of amazing. They have a team of savvy veterans on affordable deals who all seem to be overachieving at the same time. Then they are layering in some of their youth to round out the roster. It’s incredible that they won 108 games last year and with all the injuries they’ve had to start 2022, they are off to another respectable start. I’m not sure how they are doing it but the results are mind-boggling. Farhan Zaidi seems to have found the right formula for success. He’s weathered the storm of all of the overpriced, long term contracts he assumed when joining the Giants and has chosen the right players (Crawford, Belt, etc.) to extend on short term, reasonably priced contracts. He has also avoided giving out mega-deals to attractive free agents, yet the Giants just keep on winning while their prospects get closer to joining the big league club. I don’t recall any other team doing this in the past and finding the success they have to date. Now that they are getting healthy, I expect them to go a run and make up the ground they have lost over the last 2-3 weeks. They should push LA for the NL West title again.

The Giants are closer to last place than 1st

The money being paid to Belt, Longoria, LaStella, Wade, DeScafani, Cobb, and any other player on the IL (or has been cleared for full-time) I don’t want to hear excuses. I expect immediate production. Any less they are overpaid.

@Fred
Ok, but you’re ignoring the fact that the Giants, despite the abysmal week they’ve had, still rank 3rd in the NL in runs scored, 5th in run differential (second in the West only behind the Dodgers). You’re also ignoring the fact that the NL West right now is the tightest division in baseball and every team is at .500 or better. Who cares how close they are to last? They are one game out of a playoff spot.

why do fans feel good about their team doing “affordable deals” and “reasonably priced contracts”? it’s not your money. Giants ownership group is led by Charles Johnson, worth about $6.1B (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_San_Francisco_Giants…), making him one of the richest MLB owners.
I would just say he is cheap…

Fans care because a team run without fiscal responsibility has a direct, negative impact on their success. True, one bad contract can be handled, but several can hamstring a team. Getting out from under a contract like Cano’s, or Hosmer’s can free up money to be spent better, resulting in better team performance.
Johnson’s worth is irrelevant. He doesn’t supplement the Giant’s working capital, from his private wealth. Neither does Steve Cohen for the Mets, who’s twice as rich as Johnson. I’ll grant you there may be a subtle influence, because a wealthy owner does not need the revenue from his team as much as a less wealthy one does, but teams function independently from the owner’s wealth.

I hate to see Vosler sent down. He’s almost Gold Glove at 3B and he’s hitting. I guess it’s a roster squeeze, but he’s a far better LH option at third than LaStella, which may put Tommy on the block when he comes off the IL. Currently, I might have sent Santos back down and held onto Vosler.

I totally agree with you. And I hope they don’t send down Luis Gonzalez, at least not now.

Last night’s game was pretty light in attendance, especially for a Friday night. Hopefully that trend reverses itself.

Does anyone else feel like the home plate umpire’s strike zone is very inconsistent tonight? Both teams looking surprised at some of the calls.
Dorothy_Mantooth
It’s been inconsistent throughout MLB all season. Just be happy that MLB umps are no where near as bad as NBA refs. The NBA refs are ruining these playoff games; something has to be done about them.

don’t worry, in a few years, there won’t be any sports officials. high school baseball games will just be scrimmages. abusive fans and coaches at all levels have made the job so unattractive that no one wants to do it…
