Catcher Willson Contreras is potentially reaching the end of his time with the Cubs, the only organization he’s ever known. He’s about five months away from becoming a free agent and is also an obvious trade candidate, meaning he could depart before this year’s August 2 trade deadline. He’s open to stick around via a contract extension but apparently isn’t hearing anything from the front office, reports Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer wasn’t any less withholding when speaking to the media, as Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic relays that he avoided answering a question about the extension situation.
The Cubs did this extend-or-trade dance last year with Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, with all three of them eventually getting dealt before the deadline. Whether Contreras ends up following the same trajectory or not, he doesn’t seem fazed by it. “I’m just focused on doing the best for this team, finding the best way to help the team, and whatever happens in the middle of the season is going to happen,” Contreras said. I’m at peace with myself. I’m at peace with my mind. And whatever happens, even during the season or after the season, is going to be fine with me.”
Contreras is on pace to have his best season yet, as he’s hitting .263/.391/.474 through 32 games. That amounts to a wRC+ of 150, easily topping his previous high of 126. That will only add to his appeal on the trade market this summer. With the Cubs sporting a 15-22 record, they’re certainly leaning towards deadline sellers for the time being. The fact that they signed Yan Gomes to a two-year deal in the offseason only increases the odds of Contreras ending up changing jerseys in the coming months. As the catcher himself put it, “The trade rumors, they’re going to come.”
As for other members of the team, Codi Heuer tells Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times that he’s expecting to be out of action until June or July of next year. The 25-year-old righty underwent Tommy John surgery in March, just before the end of the lockout. That puts his recovery right in the usual 12-18 month timeline that is customary for such situations. Acquired from the White Sox as part of the Craig Kimbrel deal, the righty had exactly two years of service time coming into this season, meaning he’ll have exactly three years going into the winter, qualifying him for arbitration for the first time.
Another player in the organization facing an extended absence is prospect Ed Howard, who recently underwent hip surgery following an injury last week. Patrick Mooney of The Athletic relays that the organization is hoping Howard can return by Spring Training next year. “The early prognosis has looked good as far as the comeback,” Hoyer said. “But that’s going to be a comeback after a lot of rehab and a lot of time. I know he’s in good spirits. But he’s got a real road ahead of him and you feel for him.” The 16th overall selection of the 2020 draft, Howard is considered the #8 Cubs prospect by FanGraphs and #20 by Baseball America. This significant injury absence will delay his progress towards the major leagues, though Hoyer says he is expected to make a full recovery.
Yankee Clipper
The NYY welcome you, Willson! C’mon down….
kidbryant
Welcome to Chicago, Jasson Dominguez and more!
DarkSide830
plenty of better prospects in the NYY system to chose from.
Yankee Clipper
I would do that. But, then again, I am a huge Contreras fan – always have been. Like his energy. He’s like Gary Sanchez, but consistent & alive. So, actually, nothing like Gary at all…
drasco036
I know how much you like Contreras but you need to look at the bigger picture on Willson:
As a catcher: .214/.352/.348/.700
Is that a marked improvement over what you currently have behind the dish?
As a DH: .387/.472/.774/1.246
The Yankees cannot utilize Contreras as a DH since they have Stanton pretty well locked into that position. There for you really have to scrutinize Contreras’s numbers while starting behind the dish and it’s not surprising he is a better hitter as a DH than as a catcher. He doesn’t have to game plan nor is his legs getting worn out before and during the game from catching.
For the Yankees to “win” Contreras’s services, they are going to have to offer a package better than a team that can use Wilco both behind the dish and at DH, frankly, that would be incredibly stupid for the Yankees to do when you look at Contreras’s production the past three seasons when catching.
I said before, the better fit for the Yankees is Yan Gomes, Gomes is an effective hitter for a catcher and brings elite catching skills. Check the Cubs numbers, they all have better ERA’s throwing to Gomes… when he was signed, nearly every single Cubs pitcher said that they were excited to be working with Gomes and he has not disappointed one bit.
I doubt the Cubs will move Gomes, I believe they will keep him to help develop Steele and Thompson after we move on from Contreras but that is the guy the Yankees should target, not Contreras.

Keep dreaming kid… Yankees are not parting ways with a top prospect for a rental… maybe if Robertson keeps pitching well we could trade both for Dominguez
Lyman Bostock
Especially with Chapman looking a little suspect, that wouldn’t be a bad idea
SalaryCapMyth
Cantreras is controllable this season and next. He isn’t a rental.
drasco036
No…. Contreras is a free agent at the end of the year. He is a rental.

You are either undervaluing both Contreras and Robertson or overvaluing your prospect- who’s proven nothing yet. IF Hoyer moves either at the deadline he will spread it around like last season. In separate trades, he got a very good return for Baez, Bryant and Rizzo and won’t settle for less this time around. I wanna give him a minute. Hoyer knows what he’s doing.
drasco036
Keep dreaming kid… Yankees are not parting ways with a top prospect for a rental… maybe if Robertson keeps pitching well we could trade both for Dominguez and a lower tier… I don’t know the Yankees luxury tax situation but if we were willing to eat some dead money we may be able to do a Contreras for Dominguez but we are not getting more
chrismilwaukee
They’ll give up whatever it takes to get him if they want him. No one needs to dream.
ChiSoxCity
Yankees never give up anything of value in a trade…ever. Why teams trade their top players to NY for trash in return defies all logic.
Mickey777
Very tough to assimilate a catcher in mid-season. Yankee pitching has been very good, in part due to the defensive skills of Trevino and Higashioka. Why not wait to the off season and sign him then.
drasco036
This is why I think the Yankees should target Gomes over Contreras… Gomes is a guy who could seamlessly take over that rotation while giving them more offense.
Toksoon
Time for the cubs to fire Hoyer and sell the team
Lloyd Emerson
Chicago Cubs front office is full of absolute fools if they don’t seriously try to extend Contreras.
Dogbone
You might be blaming the wrong guy. Hoyer can only work from the budget that Ricketts gives him. Why do you think Theo walked.
flamingbagofpoop
I like Willson, but not extending a 30 year old catcher certainly isn’t the worst thing that a FO could do.
drasco036
With as well as Contreras has been hitting in the DH role it may be the worst idea to not at least float an offer.
rememberthecoop
Why the hell don’t the Cubs want to sign even one player from that championship core? Is there something here that we don’t know about or is this about Ricketts not giving Hoyer the money to do it?
drasco036
Kyle Hendricks
drasco036
Also why in Hell didn’t the Giants want any part of re-signing Bryant? The cubs made efforts to re-sign both Baez and Rizzo
flamingbagofpoop
They tried with at least Baez and Rizzo, both ended up settling for less money than they turned down.
Play the Game
Bryant might be the worst off season FA signing good luck with that!
drasco036
Something is up with KB… the cubs showed zero interest in extending him and actually seemed he’ll bent on trading in 2020 and 2021. The Giants didn’t want any part of re-signing him after 2021 as well… and it wasn’t even the typical “we’d love to have him back if…” it was basically just short of the Giants saying, “yeah we don’t want any part of that dude”
solaris602
It isn’t like Bryant is a bum – he’s generally productive when healthy, but there’s something about him we’re not seeing that the Cubs and Giants do. There wasn’t much buzz last winter about teams making him offers either. The Padres were interested, but that doesn’t mean much – they’re interested in everybody. The only questions are when will COL begin shopping him, and how much of that contract will they be willing to eat?
