The White Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Scott Blewett, according to the club’s transactions tracker at MLB.com. He has been assigned to Double-A Birmingham.
Blewett has spent his entire career in the AL Central, but this’ll be his second organization. He entered pro ball as a second-round pick of the Royals in 2014. Despite progressing up the minor league ladder fairly slowly, he was placed among Baseball America’s top 30 Kansas City prospects every season between 2015-19 and again heading into 2021. BA wrote early in his career that Blewett could develop into a mid-rotation starter, but struggles against high minors hitters eventually changed his projection to that of a depth starter or long relief option.
The New York native got to the big leagues for the first time in 2020, making a pair of relief appearances. He also pitched in three games last year, tossing eight innings of three-run ball over his first five MLB outings. Blewett worked solely as a reliever in the majors, but he started 10 of 23 games with Triple-A Omaha last season. In 69 innings with the Storm Chasers, he posted a 6.39 ERA with a below-average 20.1% strikeout rate. He allowed 19 home runs, an untenable 2.48 longballs per nine innings.
The Royals outrighted Blewett off their 40-man roster last September, at which point he elected minor league free agency. The 26-year-old has yet to find his stride even at the Triple-A level, but he has a solid track record of throwing strikes up through Double-A and can work as either a starter or multi-inning reliever. Blewett will hope a change of scenery can allow him to miss a few more bats and tamp down on homers to earn another crack in the big leagues.
Unfortunate name for a pitcher
Fernando Abad is up there too.
Don’t forget Homer Bailey.
Grant Balfour!
JJ Putz is another name.
Don’t forget Bob Walk
David Riske
Burke Badenhop.
Pete Walker.
He really should be a closer with that last name:
Q – “How did the White Sox do last night?”
A – “They were leading in the 9th but Blewett blew it”
They were leading in the 9th but Blewett won it.
Well, which is it?!!!
Not as bad as when Rougned hits a ball and it is not fair!
Odor foul!
Especially for a closer.
One of the better names for a relief pitcher….
I wonder how long poor Eloy will be out. Hit himself in the ankle with a foul ball. That guy is as soft as a tuna sandwich.
White Sox pretty much have an All-Star team sitting out injured right now …. Like a true championship organization we are not complaining …. Next Man Up! Still in 1st place.
Roll eyes smh. Please
Put them in the NL West or the AL East and they would be fighting for 3rd place, but yes, they have weathered some injuries.
Except…they’re NOT a Championship team…
He’ll sit one game, stop being so dramatic.
He should be back by the time the Sox face Jose Quintana.
Or by the time the Sox re-sign Quintana!
Dogbone your man crush Jake Burger had 2 hits yesterday. That’s more then Madrigal has had all season.
Jimenez’s x-rays came back negative and its just a contusion. La Russa gave Jimenez the day off to rest it. For those who don’t know what a contusion is it is a bruise in an area that swells up and get tenders where a little ice helps bring down the swelling. Dogbone, gets a lot of contusions on his arms, back and sometimes his face when his mother whacks him with a broom or rolled newspaper when he yells at her to get him food when he is in her basement trolling on here.
Mom…meatloaf!!
Dumpster Diving Ricky!
He Blewett signing a minor league deal…
Ya Blewett, Scott! Ya Blewett!
I want to see Scott Blewett give up a home run to Bobby Witt, so I can say that Scott blew it versus his former Blue Crew and gave up a big hit to the new Blue Witt.
you tried WAY to hard with that one dude
Failure has always been my greatest teacher.
if you actually said all of that, people would think you were having a stroke
By not signing him sooner, the Chisox almost BLEWETT !!
Bummer and Blewett is a good band name, not a great bullpen look.
“Spahn and Sain and pray for rain”
Bummer and Blewett, just say screw it.
6′-6″ 245 tho
Lol.. yeah no one is making fun of his name to his face that’s for sure
We have Bummer as well
Who’s is setup guy – Bailey Falter?
At least he’s not a closer
Hahn & the scouts never not working. Shout out to Troy Polumalu. Collect those lottery tickets.
I mean, whenever they’re collecting guys on minor league deals paying $50K-$75K, they can afford to take a lot of chances. If just one of them pays off out of 20, that’s a good investment.
You’ re welcome!
