The Red Sox are placing catcher Kevin Plawecki on the Covid-19-related injured list after he tested positive this morning, tweets Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Plawecki and a pair of Red Sox staff members had positive tests this morning. The two staffers are not on the coaching staff, tweets Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
Catcher Connor Wong is already headed to Fenway Park from nearby Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Plawecki’s placement on the Covid list will temporarily open a 40-man roster spot, though Wong is already on the 40-man, so for the time being Boston’s 40-man roster will be at 39 players.
Major League Baseball’s 2022 health-and-safety protocols, which were jointly agreed upon by the league and the players association, stipulate a 10-day absence for players who test positive, but it’s not a strict 10-day requirement. Plawecki will be able to return to the team sooner if he has a pair of negative PCR tests, goes more than 24 hours without a fever and is approved both by a Red Sox medical official and a panel of one MLB-appointed and one MLBPA-appointed third-party medical expert (the “joint committee”). Plawecki is vaccinated, tweets ESPN’s Joon Lee.
The 31-year-old Plawecki has appeared in four games for the Sox thus far, collecting a hit, a walk and a sacrifice fly in 12 plate appearances. He’s in his third season with Boston and enjoyed a career-best run at the plate in 2020-21 with the Sox, hitting a combined .305/.364/.414 in 262 plate appearances. Wong, 25, went 4-for-13 with a double and a triple in last year’s MLB debut with the Red Sox. One of three players the Sox received in the trade that sent Mookie Betts and David Price to the Dodgers, Wong hit .256/.289/.442 in 208 Triple-A plate appearances last season and is out to a 4-for-16 start with the WooSox thus far in 2022.

This is going to be an interesting issue for teams as the current variant is highly contagious and most people’s vax status (even with triple vax’d) won’t prevent infection.
pirateking24
Haven’t all of the variants been highly contagious?
Fever Pitch Guy
Let’s just hope the Red Sox handle it a LOT better than they did last year.
Last year they didn’t take it seriously, and paid dearly for it.
MLB-1971
FPG – “paid dearly”, but still ended up in the ALCS!
Masslive:
“Plawecki, who is vaccinated, was the first member of the Red Sox to be placed on the COVID IL in 2022.”

JC – I just wrote about this in the newer Sox Covid thread, last year they had the best record in the league until around the end of July. That’s why they were in a position to claw their way into the postseason during the last weekend of the season in DC (remember Raffy’s heroics?).
This year, if the Sox are hit just as hard early in the season then they will likely go into Fire Sale mode. If they are around .500 or less, they are not gonna GFI at the trade deadline like Atlanta did last year. So totally different scenario this year with a lot more on the line.
terrymesmer
“Most people”?
MLB-1971
So do the teams have to show the test result to MLB to prove play x is positive? If not then I hope Travis Shaw is the next to go on the Covid list (wink wink) (I did not say get Covid, but simply be put on the list – for those who could not figure it out). I know teams were abusing the Covid list last year and 2020, especially after extra inning games…. Maybe Ryan Fitzgerald can get a ten day tryout while Shaw “waits for two negative tests”…..

Who cares it’s Russia Russia now.

Steve, can we just close comments on the Covid-related posts? I realize there are roster implications associated with these stories; however, most commenters are using these boards as an opportunity to exert their vaccine position on others.

I am very open to people expressing how they feel on political views or current events but like op, I do get very tired of seeing people attacking other people on this particular issue. I enjoy reading comments that are viewers baseball opinions. I know with this subject you’re going to see those comments and you can avoid the section but why not just keep it baseball? No one is going to convince anyone differently then what they already believe in.
You Can Put It In The Books
Exactly. The internet is a big place. If people can’t stay on the baseball topic and want to act like imbeciles, maybe MLBTR isn’t the site for them.

Books is right – you should be ashamed of yourself. Calling someone out and then muting them for the same reason you called them out… is the trademark of immaturity. Stay classy though.

There is one person deservedly muting an individual for name calling and there is preemptively silencing the entire forum for all discussion.
Surely you can see a difference between the two.
Right?

Also, the Sox are averaging about six years between World Series births and after 2025 you think it will take them 11 years to get back to the series?

Cora will resign in October 2035 for an executive position with Waste Management, that’s why the Sox will win in 2036.

thought of an interesting topic: Who are the emergency catchers on each team. I remember back in the day Carlos Delgado was the emergency catcher for the mets, but in this case if Wong get held up getting there and Vazquez gets hurt who catches?

Yup!
My cousin did that. He played minor league hockey, so he had experience. But he performed several jobs for a pro team, like penalty gate keeper, stat keeper, etc. But it was expected that he’d be on call if something went seriously awry.

When Wong’s name is mentioned, this site always mentions that he was involved in the Betts trade with the Dodgers. He is like mentioning Obama was the first black President. Neither needs to be mentioned. Wong is a catcher for the Red Sox and Obama was president…..neither Betts nor Obama’s skin color are relevant imo

Several hours ago I posted a reply comment to someone who was asking for censorship from “Steve”. Apparently Steve is the head cheese on this website. I wouldn’t know because I read the article, read the comments and don’t take things personal if someone disagrees with me.
I never said anything offensive or attacked anyone (per policy). I simply stated that free speech is a good thing and closing comments to avoid people getting “triggered” was counterproductive. If someone doesn’t like comments they can simply avoid them or move on. But actively asking for censorship is simply wrong. The obvious objective, for some people here, is to have people stop reading differences of opinion.
Apparently telling someone to “go get there shine box”, a clear reference to mean F you, is okay. Seems fairly offensive and aggressive to me, but I didn’t take it personally and moved on.

Yes that post is still up at this time.
My comment has been removed. Why? Perhaps “Steve” and the censorship crew can explain that.
I foresee more censorship as a result of this post and or an email from Steve, advising my that I have been canceled, but please go back and read my other post before you make the decision to pull the plug on my account.
Free speech for everyone. And you can’t use “baseball related” on this instance since as I have pointed out there is still non- baseball related things on this comment section.
Thank you, Justplayball

Justplayball@13 – Can very much relate to your comments. Power allows people to break the rules and impose their anger on any commenter whether it follows the rules or not. This site is better than a lot of sites but it still has it’s issues.
People constantly respond with insults after I present numbers that defy their belief on a topic and those insults are fine. I’ve complained when people make it personal about my age or suggest family related things but the powers that be on this site don’t care unless it directly impacts them. You are just another of the many examples of the bias in the evaluation of comments.
Try the Athletic some time. I got booted from the Athletic for claiming the primary female Red Sox reporter was biased toward Cora. I told her she needed to be objective and stop writing to get future interviews. He cheated and that’s a fact. Well I found out after I got banned that her father is a big shot at the site and didn’t want me picking on his daughter. Go figure!! The site in an act of cowardice ghosted me and never gave me my money back NOR answered the legitimate question of which comment broke their rules. It’s not fair but what bugs me most is that writers shouldn’t write if that can’t take criticism.
In your case, nepotism rules the day. But it also explains why they work on a site like this one rather than a legitimate reporting job.
Justplayball@13
@KD17
Thank you. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. Hopefully people realize before it’s too late.

Weird place, for sure.
Dude wanted to shut comments down because he didn’t like what was being said. Gets personal (for some weird reason) when I suggested to simply not view comments.
Whatever. Minimal value from the comments section. You’re better off on Reddit.
acell10
Don’t give any credit to KD. He constantly plays the victim while being equally as insulting toward commenters on this site because they prove he is wrong in his analysis. He also posts very personal often nonsensical attacks both on players and people who respond to his posts. I’m not surprised he got booted from commenting on the athletic but his explanation for why is dubious at best. He’s also a massive hypocrite as he clearly can’t take any criticism leveled his way as well.
JoeBrady
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you, that KD got booted. And even more shocked to find out he blames someone else.

Last year my employer started strongly encouraging everyone to include their “preferred pronouns” in their email sig. Instead I chose to include my “holidays that I celebrate”.
Even though I don’t believe pronouns in every email sig should be a thing, did I try to impose my views on anyone else? Nope.
Moral of the Story: Everyone should stay in their own lane, worry about themselves and not others.
In the words of Charlie Sheen: “Your problem is you. You oughta spend a little more time dealing with yourself, and a little less time worrying about what your brother does. That’s just an opinion.”
Justplayball@13
I applaud your refusal to participate it such a request at the work place. However I’m willing to bet the only reason you were not louder in your disagreement was due to the the fact it was your employer and not a group of people that don’t pay your bills such as a group of strangers on a baseball comment page.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a great film, however the last person anyone should be taking advise from is Charlie Sheen.
My opinion is never give away rights because you might not get them back. So my freedom to speak freely is my lane. As well as it should be everyone’s.
Fever Pitch Guy
Justplay – Why should I try to force my email sig views on others? It’s not my business. At least one of my coworkers does have a name and appearance that makes it hard for others to know whether she is a male or female, so I understand why she would have the pronouns in her sig. Sorry but I’m against censorship in all it’s forms, and I don’t like controlling others anymore than I like being controlled myself.
Charlie Sheen was playing a character in that movie, but he made a great point with his words of wisdom. Opinions are absolutely fine, he specifically said he was merely giving his opinion. But using censorship to try and force others to do what you want is crossing the line, sorry.
Justplayball@13
Perhaps you have read the entire exchange on this comment section wrong.
– Someone asked “Steve” to close the comments because they didn’t want to hear other points of view related to covid on this page. Clearly because that person didn’t want to waste their time looking at or reading other opinions. That comment was not directed at me it was a specific request from the person posting the comment to the writer of the article.
– Others posted comments saying they wanted a special comments section or some such nonsense to avoid all the people who have different points of view. Others then posted the terms of service showing how its in the rules not to be rude, trolling, offensive and so on.
– I posted a comment stating the comments section should never be closed. I didn’t talk about covid rules, regulations or mandates or anything else that might “trigger” someone. I spoke only about how everyone should always be able to speak freely. With the obvious exception if you violate the terms of service or commit some type of crime.
– My post was taken down several hours later. Why? I have still not received an answer for that one.
– So I posted again asking why my comment had been taken down when all I stated was they should never close the comment section. I also asked why others, and I cited one, were allowed to be overtly rude and aggressive to others and those post remain up on the comments section.
– Several people posting agreed with me about this website and how it operates.
– Then some person directed a post at me stating I was butt hurt. To which I responded great he was using his freedom of speech. I sincerely mean that. What do I care if some clown calls me butt hurt? I don’t care. Read the comment and move on.
– My specific response to your comment is based in this portion of your message:
Moral of the Story: Everyone should stay in their own lane, worry about themselves and not others.
– My response to you is very clear. Your freedom of speech, my freedom of speech and ever person who has something to say is my lane. It’s also your lane. Do not act like I’m the censorship person in this equation.

There is nothing to get over. Someone directed a post to me and I responded.
You can continue your childish behavior. I’m not flagging your post or asking the website to delete them. Have at it.

Some of this crap is beyond stupid. I will refer to you by whatever name you prefer. I know someone whose wife wanted to be referred to by a guy’s name. I didn’t care. I had someone at work who transitioned. When I returned on a project, I was told that he was a she, with a new name. I not only used his new name, I considered it disrespectful to not use it. I even had my spouse’s family call us to warn us that someone had transitioned, just in case we no longer wanted to come. I couldn’t give a rat’s a$$ if someone switches sides.
But asking people to change pronouns is stupid. That crazy ex-singer started using “them” when she was referring to herself. I had no fracking idea of what she/he/it was talking about. I completely respect your decision to be called Stephen or Stephanie, but you still have to use the agreed-upon language, and not make it up as you go along.
