An MRI on Bryce Harper’s injured right elbow came back clean, but it will still be a few days before he can take the field again, per The Athletic’s Matt Gelb. In fact, if it weren’t for the designated hitter now being a part of the National League, Harper would have been placed on the injured list, Gelb notes. He will stay on the roster and in the lineup as the designateted hitter.
With Harper at least temporarily entrenched as the DH, the Phillies’ defense will take a hit with Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos in the outfield corners and Rhys Hoskins at first base. All three players would probably DH in a best-case scenario.
Harper’s injury, though hopefully short-term, highlights a larger roster issue for the Phillies. The outfield trio of Harper, Schwarber, and Castellanos aren’t going anywhere, but the Phillies could look to shake up the roster down the line by moving Hoskins or Alec Bohm. The younger Bohm has struggled defensively at the hot corner, and they could move him to first if they decide to move on from Hoskins, who has one more season of arbitration before free agency.
The club has also considered trading Bohm, however, notes The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. In just 12 games this season, Bohm’s value has already experienced wild swings in both directions. A three-error game at third saw him pushed to the bench for a few games, but in the last couple of days, Bohm’s bat has taken off. Such variance for a young player like Bohm is exactly why finding a trade partner is such a difficult task.

no way they trade Bohm unless somone gives them a great offer. I’d deal Hosk after the season and put Alec at 1B.
Francys01
I definitely agree with you. The Phillies should consider trading Hoskins and move Bohm to first base.

I’d deal Hoskins now

He surely won’t be worth what he will command come free agency

2 weeks in and all you Phillies fans are worshipping Bohm after lambasting him all offseason. Hilarious.
Yankee Clipper
Glad to hear Harper will be okay. The last thing this game needs is another of its best & most exciting players to go down.
Harper: The Yankee that never was…
chiefnocahoma1
The Yankees weren’t going to sign him because he wasn’t old, injury prone or both. Their historical ability to pay players just before they fall off is truly remarkable.
Yankee Clipper
Well, in all fairness, now they have to be cheap too, or free. So: old, cheap, & injury prone.
In effect we have the same qualifications as a state-run nursing home.

The Yankees weren’t going to sign him because Cashman couldn’t figure out how to get Washington to pay for him

Yeah, talk about a list I don’t want to think about… How depressing.

Harper is one of the baseball players ever
gbs42
Ever?? Depends on how many players comprise that group.
carlos15
He certainly is one of the players.
Cosmo2
Yea, Harper is awesome, but that would have to be a really big group.

Only 34 players have won multiple MVPs
Harper is one of them.
Off of the top of my head

Pujols

Frank Robinson
Campanella

Some of the very earliest players excelled before the MVP existed, and at one point players could never win more than one in their career, which is why Ruth only has one.
Harper is terrific, but I certainly wouldn’t put him in the top 34 ball players of all time.
Get Off My Mound
Unless they sign a more defense oriented 3B in the offseason, I don’t think just trading Hoskins really fixes anything. You’re not gonna get much in return for another DH who isn’t anywhere near the top of his class.
Bearded Murloc
You throw Carmago to 3rd then give Didi or Stott SS back. It’s not amazing but Carmargo is a huge D upgrade at third and if it’s Stott at SS it’s a wash. Didi is a downgrade though.
DarkSide830
Camargo has been the best all-around player to staff 3B for this team this year.
drtymike0509
That depends on what you want in return. Phils obviously want to win now so steer the trade in that direction. Maximize MLB return geared towards defense, whether it being the corner outfield or corner infield, and maybe a more on base oriented hitter. The phils have the power bats in the middle and you hope whoever between bohm and Hoskins that stays, is serviceable on the field enough while keeping the bat in the lineup. To make it a “fair” trade target some low A/farther off prospects that your scouts or analytics likes and try to spin the deal that way to the Philly media and fans.Good luck on that one. But I think that would be the right way to go. That being said I think it is still way too early to go any trade route. You at least need 30-40 games IMO to get a solid read on your team, especially with the shorter spring and injuries that pop up randomly…
baseballhistory
Bohm isn’t getting traded. Unless there is some kind of major injury, Hoskins isn’t getting traded anytime soon. After the year, it would be possible.
Justplayball@13
I don’t see either of them getting traded unless it’s a package that brings back something that can push them deeper into the playoffs. If they can even get close to being in the mix for a playoff spot.
It’s probably more likely they wait until the off season to deal someone since Didi is gone at the end of the year. That way they can reconfigure the infield.
But who knows it’s the Phils.
baseballhistory
Dombrowski isn’t making any stupid moves. Ammaro and Klentak are long gone.
You Can Put It In The Books
If the Phillies had any farm system to speak of, Dombrowski would have traded it away already.

I think the NL East is doomed. Did ppl watch Met highlights lately? The umps are giving them all the close plays. No wonder they are 11-4 (other than an easy schedule of course…
DarkSide830
NL East sends two WC teams, IMO.
BRUH.SF.BRUH
There’s no way the NL East sends two wildcard teams. The NL West has at least two of those covered.
DarkSide830
there is one WC team in the west and its SD (:

Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Still have a week to go before the calendar turns to may, and people are talking about trading Hoskins and/or Bohm! Get real my brothers. Neither one is going anywhere, At least not now.
However, should the need arise to trade one or the other, Bohm would bring the better return. In the NL, 3B is a wasteland of average to not so great players once you get beyond Machado, Arenado and Riley (Assuming 2021 wasn’t an outlier.).
Any number of non-contenders like the Cubs, D-Backs, Reds, Pirates, Nats, Rockies and Marlins could find Bohm attractive. for 3B, 1B, LF or DH.
DadsInDaniaBeach
I find the notion of trading now either Bohm or Hoskins is silly talk.
Right now, I’m more concerned with the rotation which I felt was solid. Still, it is early in the season. Give it all time.
