OKLAHOMA CITY SUNDOWN

Why would MLB allow the Giants a market that could easily house 3+ MLB teams? It’s not in the leagues best interests to only have 1 Bay Area MLB team. On top of that, due to traffic now, San Jose is 2 hours away from the Giants – that’s too far for such a massive, top 10 US city like San Jose.
The A’s honestly should have moved to SJ 15 years ago and just told the Giants to get lost. You cant use “Rights” that the A’s made up to give to you to prevent you from leaving the Bay, on the A’s to make them leave the Bay – what a psychotic, pure evil move. This is why SFG ownership is pure evil who should be banned from owning a MLB team.

Amen brother!

You dont think MLB knows who is contributing to the MLB coffers and at what rate? I bet, in merchandise alone, its 5 to 1 Giants, nationally to Athletics.
Jean Matrac
While Bay Area Traffic is admittedly bad. 2 hours SJ to SF is a gross exaggeration.
I understand the A’s fans frustration in not being allowed to move to SJ, but they would have done exactly the same thing to the Giants (and every other MLB team), if the situation were reversed. In fact, with the SJ area representing huge amounts of revenue, there is not a team in MLB that would have done differently than the Giants.
Expecting the Giants to forego a ton of revenue to allow the A’s to move to SJ is tantamount to a huge gift of money. That would be like expecting Besos, Bates, or Musk to give me a few million dollars. I could use it, and they could easily afford it, not even miss it, but that ain’t happening. Life isn’t fair, stop whining about it.
DarkSide830
i dont think there are five things that annoy me more than the people that always complain about “Bay-Area Traffic”. like we get it, your traffic sucks. most people don’t care.
Jean Matrac
I agree. Bay Area traffic might be bad (in particular areas), but so is traffic in dozens of other large cities. The nice thing about the bad traffic in the Bay Area is that it’s still the Bay Area. I’ll take that over bad traffic in other, less beautiful places, with worse weather.
flamingbagofpoop
Didn’t the A’s actually do this already, for the Giants?
RunDMC
Soto got to 500 hits in 481 games, which is a little slower than Pete Rose’s first 481 games, but Rose started at 22 y/o and Soto at 19 y/o, so Soto has a head start and has been hitting since Day 1. He’s the best shot of the young guns…hopefully he has some lineup protection and isn’t walked at a Bonds rate.
LordD99
Soto walks a ton. Great skill, but bad for accumulating hits. Arriving at 19 will help, but his hitting style needs to be factored in, and we’ll have to see how healthy he remains. Mike Trout also arrived at 19 is is no mock for 3,000 hits due to walks and injuries.
RunDMC
It’ll be interesting if they go through with prohibiting the shift which should help Soto over the long-term (don’t remember where that landed in the CBA). Part of Soto’s skillset though is not swinging at balls out of the zone. Which brings up Wander Franco. He doesn’t walk much, but doesn’t strike out either or swings at balls out of the zone. IF he stays healthy, he could also be an early candidate.
LordD99
I’m quite sure restricting shifts is a done deal. Manfred served notice to the MLBPA it’s coming in 2023. What needs to be decided is how it will be implemented, but the general view is two fielders have to be on both sides of the bag, and no 4th OFers. The former would basically eliminate the latter. I do wonder if this will lead to more defense in motion once the ball is released.
Gmen777
I genuinely wonder if Luciano, Matos, Harrison and Doval for Soto and Corbin would start a conversation

Why on earth would the Nats move a generational player for mere prospects? Add in Logan Webb if you want to be taken seriously – if Soto is moved, a young star is coming back the other way – that’s a given.

Here we go with years of terrible trade offers for Soto. Soto is Bryce 2.0 with the Nats. He’s too important to the franchise to let go, inevitably will spin not getting the right trade offer while not interested in a record contract that Soto will be seeking.
Only question is: who is WSH drafting with the comp pick they receive when he signs elsewhere?

A lot will hinge on who is the owner of the team in a year or so.

These “our trash for your treasure” trade proposals always seem drug-induced. LOL!
THE downvoter
Most of them begin with dilusional NYY fans, so yes, likely so.
LordD99
Rarely see them from Yankee fans. Regularly see comments like yours.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I don’t see them as often anymore, but I remember a plethora of “Andujar and Sanchez for (cheap, controlled superstar)” ideas. They were hilarious.
DarkSide830
yeah, it was more common in the past.
vtadave
That along with the Andujar, Clint Frazier, and a couple lottery tickets for young superstar proposals.
RobM
Seems to trend based on the fan base and player. For example, the Jo Adell for (fill in the blank) was very popular for a the past year. Jose Ramirez to the Jays was nonstop during the recent never-ending off season.
Jean Matrac
Really? The last Yankee fan trade proposal I saw, like a week or 10 days ago, was Peraza, Volpe, and Dominguez for Soto. Then I was accused by a second Yankee fan of being clueless when I said that wasn’t nearly enough.
Those 3 have less trade value than the 4 Giants prospects named above according to the trade simulator I use. And both packages are woefully short of what it would take to get Soto.
Bruin1012
The problem with trade proposals for a generational hitter like Soto who isn’t even a free agent until 2025 is that those trades haven’t happened there is no precedent. Since Soto isn’t a free agent until 2025 the Nats will probably continue to try and extend him the next couple of years. The Nats won’t to and trade him until they are 100% sure they can’t keep him. I’m guessing they won’t even cross that bridge until the off-season when he has 1year of control left.
Tad2 b13 you are absolutely correct Peraza, Volpe, and Dominguez doesn’t even get the conversation started it’s not near enough if the Nats decided to trade Soto. I’m guessing war would be insane but it’s not going to happen.
Bruin1012
“ the bidding war”
Jean Matrac
I agree with your take. And I think it’s not only because Soto is under team control for awhile as the Nat’s try to extend him. When you consider his value, I can’t see any team willing to give the Nat’s anything close to that value. And why would the Nat’s except anything that wasn’t close?
The idea of attaching Corbin does get values closer, but still not nearly close enough. Basically it comes down to any Soto trade talk being purely academic. Which goes to your point, that there’s no precedent for a trade like that, for good reason.

No way is Farhan Zaidi even considering a package like that.
Not happening.

“When the MLBTR staff was making our picks, I was surprised to see the White Sox get so many of the first-place votes, since you could make a case for at least three of the other teams.” Normally, Mark, I like your perspectives, but I think you’re way off on this one. Once they get over some of these injuries they’ve been having, the Sox will win this division easily, What team has more talent? .(and I am not a Sox fan)
Samuel
rememberthecoop;
You can do the “it’s the injuries” thing. Sorry, it’s not about “talent”.
One needs to watch some games. It’s knowing how to play baseball. The Sox cannot do that. Other than a brief period with Ozzie – in which he had to fight his own FO for players – the Sox have been through 3 managers trying to teach them “fundamentals”.
I heard a veteran out-of-town broadcaster talk about them in disbelief after a recent series. He said no matter the game situation, no matter where the hitter was in the lineup, each guy came up to the plate swinging with all his might (as one MLBTR writer one wrote a few years ago is the way to play professional baseball). In addition to having the worst team defense in MLB by errors, they constantly don’t make plays on balls that should be caught or at least knocked down before they get to the OF; don’t make double plays that should be made; throw to the wrong base because they don’t comprehend the game situation; and – stunningly – after most of their infielders catch a ball with opposing runners on base, they often hold the ball and look around trying to figure out what to do with it. This is amazing at the ML level. The game is fast on the field, and there’s a break between pitches. A defender should know game situation, the speed of the runner(s) on base, and be prepared to do something with the ball the moment he catches it (I’ve been watching Abreu do this at 1B since he came up). Pitchers don’t run to cover 1B in time for balls hit to the 1B; the SS and/2B often are not running to the bags and ready for a throw when a grounder is hit to another infielder, etc. The baserunning is atrocious.
Playing rotisserie league baseball by looking at stats is nice. But they don’t reflect what’s going on on the field of play. In addition to being the worst disciplined team in MLB, the Sox exhibit an extremely low Baseball IQ daily.
Any of the Guardians, Royals, Tigers and even the Twins (I had to reverse my position on them as they have some terrific pitchers – starting with Joe Ryan who may well be a Cy Young candidate this year) can beat them out. Point blank – they need an entire new FO; but with the owner as old and loyal as he is to his employees he’s not about to do that.
Sky14
I agree the Sox were the favourite for the division before the season but they aren’t the Dodgers, with overwhelming talent. The Twins or Guardians both have talent and could easily take the division.
flamingbagofpoop
If you look at projections, some of them have the Twins and Indians within a few games of the WS

Psych consulting for players struggling after a couple weeks? People need to chill. Even proven players like Mookie can struggle in such a short window. And one of the players mentioned, Julio Rodriguez struggled out of the gate but has hit nearly .300 the last week.
