The Marlins informed reporters this afternoon that left-hander Sean Guenther underwent Tommy John surgery yesterday (via Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald). That’ll obviously keep him out for the entire season, and it seems likely he’ll miss a good portion of the 2023 campaign.
It’s a difficult blow for Guenther, albeit not all that unexpected. It was reported last week the southpaw was dealing with an arm issue which may require surgery. Miami had already placed him on the 60-day injured list, so there won’t be any forthcoming transaction now that he’s gone under the knife.
Guenther, 26, reached the big leagues for the first time last season. He made 14 appearances and worked 20 1/3 innings, struggling to a 9.30 ERA. Guenther didn’t miss many bats in the majors, but he induced grounders at a decent 47.2% clip. He also posted some excellent strikeout and walk numbers with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he punched out 30.1% of batters faced and only walked 4.3% of opponents.
While he won’t pitch in 2022, Guenther will receive major league pay and service time for his time on the IL. The Marlins will have to add him back to the 40-man roster at the start of next offseason.

‘Tis the season.

Fish are fried. Season’s over.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
The Marlins have a great young pitching staff, they need to match it with some offense. Other posters seem to be unkind, why? The only thing fried is the bad smelling posts of non believers.

We are more likely to be called the Manatees. That was one of the runner-up names for both Florida franchises when they were determining their nicknames upon getting accepted as expansion team in their respective starting years.

Sad to say, but after just our first game, it seems that the Marlins are done until they get a legit Closer.
So disappointed that after the Marlins failed to grab a real Closer after 2020, they repeated the process with failing to grab a legit Closer after last season. Any idiot can see that our biggest problem last year, and starting this year, is the inability to hold leads in the last couple of innings.
And Anthony Bass needs to be gone already…unless the current Marlins front office wants to let Bass surpass both Kevin Gregg, Renyel “Ford” Pinto and Heath Bell as the absolutely worst disasters we’ve ever had in our bullpen. And nobody can say that we can’t afford a legit Closer or that keeping Bass makes more financial sense. Both statements are discredited by the fact that with Bass’ salary and the price spent on laundry detergent and adult diapers for every time he soils himself on the mound, we are paying the amount or more than what it would take to have added Kimbrel or Jansen. One year on the contracts for each!

After the second game?
Good work by Bender, Bleier, Sulser and Okert.
Such an outburst after only one game suggests you are the one needing incontinence supplies.
Bass worries me too

The problem is that the Marlins needed a legit Closer and failed to land one. Kenley Jansen could’ve helped, but he’s now in Atlanta. Kimbrel could’ve been the guy, but is now in L.A.
They didn’t even close a deal for Lou Trivino who could’ve given the hope of having a guy that could do it.
After this being the case, when we see the same story from last year of taking leads into the opposing team’s last inning or two, but failing to hold them, it sends the message that we are not going anywhere until we fix that issue at the end of the bullpen. None of these guys have shown they can close a game.
And Bass is an absolute disaster. While perhaps the thought to bring him back was probably based in thinking he could bounce back, it’s clear that he should be on the verge of being DFA’ed if this will continue with him this year again. It’s better to just take the loss in money instead of the win column.

Please have patience as we work to find a bullpen solution that serves our fans and our payroll constraints alike. In the meantime, join us for Senior Day every Thursday, presented by Humana.
