The Mariners announced that catcher Chance Sisco has been released. Between Sisco’s release and three players (George Kirby, Erick Mejia, and Sal Romano) assigned to the minor league camp, Seattle now has 34 players remaining in their big league spring camp.
Between Tom Murphy, Cal Raleigh, and Luis Torrens, the Mariners already have a fair bit of catching depth in place, and Joseph Odom is also in camp on a minor league deal. Sisco might have simply been the odd man out, and he’ll now test free agency to see if he can catch on with another team. With clubs always in need of experienced depth behind the plate, the odds are good that Sisco will land a new opportunity somewhere.
Sisco has played in 196 games with the Orioles and Mets since the start of the 2017 season, and he has batted only .197/.317/.337 over 608 plate appearances in the majors. It seemed like his offense was trending up slightly in limited action with Baltimore in 2019-20, but he had only a .430 OPS over 83 PA last season.

Torrens is hitting quite well. could he start out as the primary DH?
Francys01
To the Yankees if they need another catcher. They already have Higashioka and Trevino.

Cashman leaving Torrens unprotected for the rule 5 a few years back was one of his dumbest moves. He was supposed to develop into a solid hitting starter with good defense. I am still baffled why he was left unprotected. They could have kept him and let him develop correctly through the minors instead of what he has had to go through. Then he trades Sanchez a well known paycheck player in his walk year. He is going to produce like we have hoped this year so he gets his big paycheck. Unfortunately, it will be for the Twins and they will get the compensation when he signs elsewhere. Cashman is a bonehead when it comes to catchers. Always has been.

Good God have you seen Toro ripping the cover off the ball again this year? As long as Toro is hitting they are going to find a way to get him in the lineup a lot.
DarkSide830
oh don’t get me wrong, I think Toro is more likely to start, but I was just wondering if Torrens was still in the mix. he’s having a good spring as well.
myaccount2
Yes, Torrens is still in the mix. Out of options and has been good since being recalled last June. He’ll also get some looks at catcher, as he spent a lot of the offseason working on defense.
ayrbhoy
Theyre prob going with 3 Catchers at least thru April- since Toro and 2-3 others will rotate that DH spot.
If Raleigh’s hitting does improve, like it has in Camp the writing is on the wall for ol Murph. Tonight’s oppo taco off C Burnes will not save him I’m afraid. Torrens is just a much better hitter
Benjamin560
Too much depth for a primary DH. Winker/Kelenic/Julio/Haniger in the outfield. France/Frazier/Crawford/Suarez/Toro/Moore on the infield. Murphy/Torrens/Raleigh at catcher. That DH position is gonna be rotated through quite a lot this season by everyone.
Holy Cow!
So will Chance leave camp on a horse, a low rider, or a chopped up Harley power to the max?
xcfan
Given those choices, you must think he asked Eric Byrnes how to leave the Mariners.

cannot like this comment more, i will never forget that night

Epic. Simply epic.
Edp007

If Torrens learns to slide and block a ball instead of just reaching for it and learns to drop and cover the five hole with his glove he might be a decent C. Until then he is a bat. How do guys get drafted when they have such obvious defects in their game?
Benjamin560
Go ask Blaze Jordan(Red Sox).
darthdragula
because they can flat out hit and this game has the DH. now it’s in both leagues, so it isn’t going to get any better.
mario crosby
Sisco should expect the Pirates to be contacting him and sending him a Greyhound bus ticket to spring training.
bravesfan
He’s still worth a rebuilding team or bottom feeder taking another chance on him. Even his original orioles really should on a minor league deal. He was such a solid hitter for quite a while as a prospect, then that mental part hit him hard and he hasn’t been able to recover. Marlins, pirates, Cincy, tigers… all make sense to some degree,

Chance is no so good at baseball. Time to switch it up consider a new vocation. How bout poetry, or spoken word. Chance a Rapper?
